In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah Chin

4 out of 5 stars Irish at it's best........2007-05-07

This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.

5 out of 5 stars Irish Magic.......2006-08-21

This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices, the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Just got your Kleenex.......2005-12-25

I suggest a box of Kleenex for each person in the room when you play this CD or VHS recording. Mom won't let me play it anymore because she...well, you know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-12

When it's cold and frightful here, I play The BOYZ!

So wonderful. So much fun.

Up here in backwash Maine, there ain't much, believe me. But these guys are great. Sincere, care about what they're doing, true artists.

Ah, to go to Ireland again. Well, not unless the price of natural gas recedes!

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Irish Tenors is just that!.......2005-01-22

This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!

Well worth buying.

Everything about Bryn Terfel is over-life-size: his physique, his personality, his breath-control, and of course his extraordinarily beautiful voice. This recording displays his stunning vocalism and versatility to full advantage, but its title belies its content. Alhough it does include some simple pieces, the execution is fussy, overdone, and calculated for maximum external effect. The program ranges from Mozart, Pergolesi and pseudo-Bach to Sondheim in arrangements that are pure Hollywood, complete with throbbing strings and rolling drums, often destroying the spirit as well as the letter of the original compositions. It begins with Mozart's heavenly "Ave verum" arranged for baritone solo and chorus, frustratingly cut off after a few phrases (another setting of the same text by Karl Jenkins, written for Terfel, is more satisfying, being complete and original). The splendid baritone Simon Keenlyside joins him here as well as in the opening number of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater;" originally for soprano and alto, this must be the baritones' revenge on female singers who usurp songs written for men, like Schubert's and Schumann's cycles. Franck's "Panis angelicus" also inexplicably becomes a duet; unfortunately, Terfel's and tenor Aled Jones' voices do not match. Bach-Gounod's popular "Ave Maria" is all swells and exaggerations. The rest of the program consists of folksongs, hymns, show and film tunes, inflated to operatic proportions and generally ending in a fade-out or a flourish. Even the title song is anything but simple. This record is not for purists who like their music performed the way the composer wrote it, but aficionados of great singing will love it. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bryn Terfel's beautiful voice........2007-05-13

Bryn Terfel has a beautiful voice. Listening to him is very pleasant and definitely something to look forward to. I read a review saying he would replace tenor Pavroti. However, I believe that Mr. Terfel is a Baritone and not a Tenor. That does not detract from the fact that he should be considered one of the world's top male singers. His voice is truly impressive. This CD by Bryn Terfel is one from our collection that is outstanding and a favorite.

1 out of 5 stars Why do people think this guy can sing??.......2007-04-27

Sorry, I think this guy is one of the most overrated singers out there today. He always sounds like he is singing holding his nose shut. VERY nasal sounding.

If you want to listen to an incredibly beautiful voice, buy one of Josh Groban's CD's--you won't regret it! He has the voice of the century!

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing.......2007-02-03

Excellent selection of music. It covers many different types. My wife likes being able to hear the words with out instruments drowning out the vocals. I find it relaxing and many of the songs are familiar and very well done.

5 out of 5 stars Bryn Terfel's Simple Gifts.......2006-02-25

Simply superb. I don't know what our local (Wash DC) paper was talking about when they said Deep River was the weakest link. I was enthralled from beginning to end. I have had the pleasure of hearing Bryn Terfel live in recital at the Kennedy Center. I can assure you that his voice has only improved with age. He was wonderful then and is spectacular now!

5 out of 5 stars A Heartfelt Offering Reminiscent of An Earlier Era.......2006-02-15

Bryn Terfel harkens back to earlier American operatic stars such as Richard Tucker and Robert Merrill who crossed grenres to satisfy their unquenchable need to sing any and all songs that moved them to an appreciative public. These great singers all had their origins singing sacred music from their respective religions and learned to lay their considerable talents before the altar of the simple inspirational song.

This recording is wonderful on many levels. The selections are an unusual mixture of classical sacred music, spirituals, hymns, Lieder, Austrian Christmas and Gaelic songs, musical numbers and movie theme songs harmoniously combined to touch the soul of the listener in a gentle ebb and flow of devotion, intensity and tenderness. All of these songs are beautiful in and of themselves and in his hands, we experience them anew.

Bryn Terfel sings with the commitment necessary to make the awesome challenge of simplicity look easy. To my way of thinking, he is the most communicative and articulate singer today, bar none. He is a poet who savors the sound, feeling and meaning of each and every word and marries it uniquely and faithfully to the music. He transports the listener into the life of a song and transfixes us each and every moment. His enormous talent is not overwhelming or distractive and is inextricably and wholly intertwined with the music. This is greatness and it is very, very rare today.

I like the inclusion of the choir in several of the numbers as it reflects on the nature and context of the songs. I am less fond of the selections with the guest soloists as I feel they do not match his ability to "get inside" a song. The orchestra and orchestations are sensitive and enhancing.

This recording is simply wonderful and should have a broad appeal. It will move and inspire the believer, satisfy and fulfill the otherwise spiritual, calm the troubled and renew a flagging soul.

1 out of 5 stars How can you call these "Hymns".......2006-08-05

Not to harp on anyone here, but it's obvious that none of you grew up in a church or environment that had a good choir. I know, a Hymn is a genre of music, but a recording of a hymn isn't one if it doesn't contain HARMONY. If they're a "choir," then why don't the tenors sing a different note than the sopranos, altos, and basses? The organist is quite good, I'll admit, but you're wasting your time if you're looking for a good recording of these beautiful songs that were COMPOSED with harmony, not unison. If they want to sing in unison like this, they need to be stripped of their "choir" status and simply be called a "group."

5 out of 5 stars wonderful collection of magnificent music.......2006-01-18

Most everything on this CD is very well done. The recording environment might have been less than perfect, but that shouldn't dimish one's enjoyment very much. Most of the arrangements are very traditional, with the notable exception of Amazing Grace, which though it isn't terrible, it isn't very good either. Some songs had verses removed, which is understandable, though it was poorly done in Eternal Father, Strong to Save -- they did verse 1 ("Eternal Father"), then they skipped(!!!) verse 2 ("O Christ, the Lord") and went on to the final verses ("Holy Spirit" and "O Trinity") -- which is skipping Someone important! However, outside of that, it was excellent.

If you like sacred music, or hymns, then you'll thoroughly enjoy this CD. If you're a Christian, you should enjoy this as well, no matter your taste in music (and you might just learn to like hymns as well!). It is a well-chosen set of some of the most magnificent, God-honoring music of all time, done is a mostly very traditional manner, and it was done well.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed but enjoyable.......2005-04-15

The huge size and reverberating acoustics of Washington National Cathedral make it difficult to hear any kind of live choral performance clearly, even if you're sitting in the front rows in the nave. The Cathedral Choral Society is handicapped by having to record in this acoustically mushy space, and it shows in this CD, often creating an uneven balance between the organ and the chorus as noted by other reviewers. The repertoire is well-chosen, but the quality of the arrangements is uneven. Too often, the chorus seems to be singing in unison right out of the Hymnal, like any parish church choir at an ordinary Sunday service. Certain pieces do suggest the heights which the Society is capable of attaining. But the group never achieves the splendor that the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys displays every Sunday morning. Just when the Society seems to be getting there, the conductor pulls them back. And the shrill folk arrangement of "Amazing Grace" will have you covering your ears as the sopranos shriek clumsily, confusing volume with fervor.

5 out of 5 stars Hymns through the Centuries.......2002-03-18

This is not a review. I just have a question. Does "Hymns through the Centuries" contain the hymn "It is Well with my Soul?" Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars A must own for classic church music lovers.......2002-02-16

I purchased this CD just based on the titles and am very glad I did. There are only two downsides to the album. First is the fact that there isn't a companion CD with 26 more hymns! Second is picky, but I do agree with another rater that the organ could have been a little louder related to the singing. Hope you enjoy listening!

5 out of 5 stars Mormon Tabernacle and Vocal Majority.......2006-11-10

This has got to be one of the most incredible musical presentations that I've ever experienced. These two groups together in concert effect more joy, sorrow, remorse, nostalgia, victory, hope and power in 30 minutes that most of us experience in years. Amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2001-01-19

With the incredible proliferation of rock, and now rap music, this album is a great example of what music can me - simply beautiful. The MTC is, as always, splendid, and the Vocal Majority is truly wonderful. This a great album of sacred and secular songs, beautifully performed, and a genuine pleasure to hear.

4 out of 5 stars two excellent choral ensembles strut their stuff.......1999-02-16

This CD features two renowned groups in some of their best work. The MTC, of course [of chorus], is known around the world. Vocal Majority is less global in its familiarity but equal in its skill. For my part, I prefer the sound of an all-male ensemble. This is not to gainsay the MTC, however: only a preference. If you want to hear two great groups performing a popular array of songs, this choice will not disappoint.

Amazon.com essential recording

Ives's First Symphony is an attractive, conservative piece with a gorgeous slow movement based on a hymn tune and a finale that sounds strangely like early Bruckner. The Fourth, on the other hand, is arguably his masterpiece, and one of the most radical compositions in the history of music. Scored for a huge orchestra with three solo pianos, chorus, offstage and onstage instruments, and "everything but the kitchen sink" percussion, it requires at least two conductors to keep it all coordinated. Listening to it--despite the commotion in the second movement--is a positively transcendental experience, and the finale resolves itself into one of the most beautiful moments in American music. These performances are smashing (and crashing, where necessary!). --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Detail of Ives's Evolution over Time.......2004-03-25

This CD consists of the Charles Ives's first and last symphonies. The first is a work that Ives wrote as his thesis while a music student at Yale. It demonstrates Ives's mastery of the late 19th century style. It's an interesting and thoroughly engaging work of music, but nothing spectacular. The real highlight of this disc is the 4th symphony, which is probably the best played version of this piece currently available. The fourth is Ives's most ambitious and experimental work. It experiments with atonality, polytonality, polyryhthms, and the layering of multiple orchestras (or at least the impression of layering multiple orchestras). Plus, in typical Ives fashion, the fourth includes numerous quotes to popular American music of his time, especially marches and ragtime. What sets this recording of the fourth apart from the numerous others that are available is its Americanness. The other available recordings are conducted by non-Americans who don't seem to have a real grasp of the uniquely American qualities of this piece. Other recordings tend to suffer from a very modernist approach. The playing is precise and the multiple textures are very clear...however, that's not the point of this piece. MTT makes this piece swing, which is exactly how it's supposed to be played. Listen to the quotes from ragtime and marches in other versions of this piece as compared to the ragtime and american marches in this recording. This recording sounds very American and captures the essence of turn of the century American music, wheras the other recordings play this swinging music as if it were an excercise in precision conducting. Yes, if you want to hear the music played with precise and clearly articulated textures, go for the Ozawa recording. If you want to hear the fourth as the revolutionary piece of music that celebrates America, as Ives meant to be heard, then pick up this recording.

2 out of 5 stars Much Better Choices Available.......2003-12-01

Tilson Thomas--a wonderful conductor of much 20th-century music--just doesn't have the ear for Ives. This seems true for all of the composer's work, as varied as it was. The 1st Symphony, a student composition, in Tilson Thomas's hands seems exactly the proficient but minor piece it was long regarded as. Mehta's rendering on Decca is infinitely more compelling, revealing it as one of the first outstanding American symphonies. Likewise, Tilson Thomas's rendering of the still astonishingly radical 4th does not come close to Stokowski's premiere recording on Sony (I hardly know what to think of the reviewer who finds problems with that recording's audio quality--it's powerful and absolutely first-rate) or Ozawa's thrilling version on DG. That last is paired (along with Ozawa's definitive take on "Central Park in the Dark") with a Tilson Thomas "Three Places in New England"--once again, unconvincing.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Recording/Performance/Interpretation.......2002-03-21

I caught the Ives "bug" in 70's while in college. I heard the Houston Symphony and Lawrence Foster perform the 4th live in Jones Hall. While completely baffled by much of what I heard, I knew I had to learn more about this composer. I bought and listened to as many LP's as I could afford, among them was the Ormandy/Philadelphia 1st and Stokowski/American Symphony 4th on Columbia. I was fond of both the 1st and 4th, but set them both aside until recently. I listened to them both, found that I still enjoyed them very much, but found both lacking from a sound quality point of view. I searched the Web and found glowing reviews of this CD. Well, the reviews are 100% justified. This CD will quite possibly become my favorite in my collection.

Pairing the 1st and the 4th makes sense. George Ives told his son, "You have to learn the rules before you can break them". The 1st clearly shows that Ives learned the rules admirably. The work is both moving at times and tremendous fun. Take a young, creative, and relatively uninhibited musical genius, expose him to the great European masters like Brahms, Dvorak, Wagner, and Beethoven, mix in church hymns, American folk and band music, and you will get the Ives 1st Symphony.

Comparing the Ormandy to the Tilson Thomas, while I'm very fond of the Ormandy reading, I find the Tilson Thomas to be overall significantly more satisfying. The Ives 1st is a technically challenging work particularly for the 1st violins. Except for a few very minor flaws, the CSO strings meet the challenge. Tilson Thomas extracts more of the music from the score. The recording engineers get an A+ for overall balance and sound. This is a fine, very accessible work which deserves many more performances in the concert hall than what I suspect it currently gets.

Between the First and Fourth are performances of five hymns that are used in the Fourth - a nice bonus.

It's difficult for me to discuss the Ives Fourth. I have been a fan of the work since I first heard it. The third, slow movement is a reworking of the first movement of the First String Quartet. It's accessible, beautiful, and deeply moving. The other three movements are experimental music at its all time best -- powerful, baffling, mysterious, chaotic, and profoundly moving. This music arguably could have been an intellectual exercise only, but somehow completely transcends this, and becomes something which I can only, given my limitations as a music listener, view with great awe and mystery. For me this music is completely engaging, fascinating, transports me at times into an altered state of mind that I can't even begin to describe, and ultimately moves me to the strongest and most deeply felt of emotions.

I considered this work to be a masterpiece in a category all by itself. If there are other works like this one, I want to know about them, please.

I give this release the highest of all possible recommendations. The attention to detail and how successfully it has been captured on disk is simply amazing.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Ives CD!.......2000-03-06

If you are collecting Ives' symphonies, this is a sensitive, clean and appealing performance of No. 1. The inclusion of five old American church hymns on this CD is an interesting idea. While I doubt anyone will buy this CD for these hymns, I appreciate the concept of inserting them as a prelude to Ives' Sym. No. 4, since Ives does quote these particular hymns in the symphony. As for Sym. No. 4: I loved my old vinyl recording, but I love this CD even more! Conductors might interpret this extremely complex music in varying ways, but somehow No. 4 conveys its unmistakeable "message" in every recording I've heard. Ives' genius was truly unique. A native of Danbury CT, he was experimenting with polyrhythms, quarter-tones, and free atonalism long before Schoenberg and Stravinsky brought them into style. Has any other composer so daringly and so successfully raised such humble materials to such a sublime level? How can two marching bands playing different pieces at the same time be so right? How can chaos make such perfect sense? Somehow Ives makes disorder into something transcendently perfect, and yes...piercingly beautiful. The final movement might provoke a mystical vision if you're not careful. Michael Tilson Thomas truly loves modern music, and it shows in this recording. He brings out the Emersonian-mystical quality of Ives' music very effectively, but also utilizes the power of the C.S.O. to emphasize the surprising muscle beneath this music, which I had not noticed in other recordings. As you might expect with the C.S.O., the performance is precise (perhaps a strange term to use with this symphony) but also emotionally charged. The chorus does a beautiful job with its haunting, critical role in the 1st and last movements. I recommend this CD highly, and hope it will help more people appreciate Ives' genius.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty Heavy-handed stuff here.......2004-03-04

Again, I think altissimo! is going over the top here with the raw patriotism bit. Sure we should be proud of this country, but there does reach a point where it becomes too much and is embarrassing. That point is reached here with this mixed bag of recordings pulled in from over the place, many already released from Altissimo! before and just re-packaged here. If you don't mind patriotism served with a lot of relish then this CD is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful and inspiring..........2003-11-07

It might not be everyone's cup of tea but One Nation Under God is a beautiful ode to patriotism and the United States of America. There isn't a clunker in the 20 songs on the album, not surprising considering you get things like Nearer My God to Thee, God Bless America or Amazing Grace. A fantastic job by the various military bands who contributed to this effort!

5 out of 5 stars One nation Under God.......2003-10-30

"One Nation Under God" is a great compilation of inspirational patriotic music, superbly performed by truly world-class musicians.
The selection of music was excellent, and very much in keeping with the title and the theme of the album. The opening recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Senator Thompson, underscored by a most respectful and reverent lead-in to "God of Our Fathers", perfectly set the stage for the well-appointed and majestically performed music that followed.

Several pieces evoked solemn contemplation and reverence, leading to others of pride, majesty and tribute, all arranged and played with proper respect and appropriate to the theme "One Nation Under God".
This is a magnificent and timeless album that will hold a prominent spot in my collection, and be often enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars One Nation Under God.......2003-09-25

This CD is absolutely awesome ! From the opening of God of our Fathers with the Pledge of Allegiance by Senator Fred Thompson to the final note of Taps, I could not stop listening. This collection of patriotic and inspirational music is a must for all Americans. As an ex-Navy man and Viet Nam veteran, the strains of The Navy Hymn sent chills up and down my spine. It brought back so many precious memories. This collection of 20 songs is a bargain at any price !

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection!! Patriotic Music all on one CD !!!.......2003-09-24

This CD is definately for people who are looking to get some uplifting patriotic music for listening to at home, the office, for parades, barbecues, and ecspecially holidays like the 4th of July. Its got all of America's greatest hits including "The Star Spangled Banner", "Amazing Grace", "America The Beautiful", along with other less well known gems such as "Godspeed", and "Pslam for Band". All of the songs are played excellently by the US Marine, Navy, and Air Force bands. The label that put out this release, Altissimo Records actually specializes in military music, so if you like this check our their other releases. Overall Highly Recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars Takes you back in time.......2005-08-24

You can almost hear the great ship sail, the passengers whisper as I Salonisti gives the heart of a full orchestra in their small ensemble. If you don't fall in love with 'Destiny', you don't have a heart. There is an ethereal echo in the recording that gives it a concert-hall sound, which only adds to the beauty of each song. The only (miniscule) improvement they could have made was to put the version of 'Nearer My God to Thee' they played in the movie--it had a melancholy bareness that is missing from the version on this album. Still, this is wonderful music for afternoon teas and romantic dinners--really, any time you want to escape modern life. These guys get it.

5 out of 5 stars Rich in depth, broad in scope.......2000-03-26

This recording is a must for the eclectic music lover. The artistic skills are first class. The sound in magnificent. The feeling and passion of presentation are tops. The selections are excellent. My personal favorite presentation is the use of a concert grand piano to play bass scores. Just Awesome.

5 out of 5 stars "Ghosts of the Abyss Soundtrack".......2003-04-15

The music fits the film well. The best tune on the album is a remake of Darkness, Darkness (youngbloods 1967) sung by an unknown artist Lisa Torban. A voice that just makes you repeat the selection over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Ghosts of the Awesomeness.......2003-04-14

Oh my goodness! This was the best 3D Imax I have ever seen! (and yes I've seen more than one). And the soundtrack made it as good as it is! The song at the end called Darkness, Darkness was so fantastic and made me cry so much! Best ever!

    4 out of 5 stars AN ALMOST 5-STAR ALBUM.......2005-06-15

I would have given 5 stars to this compilation, had it not been for the cacophonous sounds of the opening number, DIXIE. The rest, taken from two beautiful LP's of the 60's, is simply reverent and inspiring. The orchestra plays with vivacity, the arrangements are breathtakingly elegant... close your eyes and see the fields of grain unfolding in your mind. Perhaps the most beautidul number is HOME ON THE RANGE. It is music-making at its best. The recorded sound is remarkable.

    5 out of 5 stars Carmen Dragon......."A Genious"!.......2003-08-12

The first two LP albums that I purchased as a boy were "Americana" and "Bless This House", by Carmen Dragon and the Capitol Symphony Orchestra. Many of the songs on this album are from those two albums. His arrangements of the songs on this album are more than tremendous, they are a pleasure to listen to. This is music that will live down through the ages. Thanks to Angel Records for the remaster of these albums. I highly recommend this album to anyone with the ear for great music.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Americana Arrangements.......2002-02-19

First of all, since Amazon didn't bother listing the 16 tracks on this recording, here they are: 1.)Dixie; 2.)The Stars & Stripes Forever; 3.)My Old Kentucky Home; 4.)Home On The Range; 5.)Battle Hymn Of The Republic; 6.)The Wide Missouri; 7.)Nearer, My God, To Thee; 8.)Toyland; 9.)Aura Lee; 10.)Old Folks At Home; 11.)Turkey In The Straw; 12.)Hoe Down; 13.)Bless This House; 14.)Beautiful Dreamer; 15.)Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow; 16.)America The Beautiful. These orchestral arrangements by Carmen Dragon conducting the Capital Symphony Orchestra are very lush and beautiful. The recordings were made between 1957 and 1962, and sound astonishingly fresh and vibrant considering their age. The program is a nice mix of Americana which is hard to resist. A real sleeper that I highly recommend!
