At his best, as exemplified by his 1999 megahit "How Do You Like Me Now?!" Keith is simple and direct in the tradition of Hank Williams Jr.--aware of his limitations, able to thrive within them. "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" struck a chord, though it differed little from the fist-shaking morale-boosters of previous wars. On the downside, Keith's formulaic tendencies can become tiresome, as it did on "My List," a generic celebration of life's mundane treasures. Sales notwithstanding, "Beer for My Horses" was no artistic landmark for Keith or duet partner Willie Nelson. By contrast, he and daughter Krystal have fun with the 1963 Inez and Charlie Foxx R&B hit "Mockingbird" (first revived by James Taylor and Carly Simon). "Go With Her" injects a different spin into the time-honored breakup song, wittiness absent on the gimmicky "Stays in Mexico." Raucous live performances of "You Ain't Much Fun" and his debut hit, "Should've Been a Cowboy," reflect his ability to rouse the faithful into the obligatory singalong. --Rich Kienzle

Toby Keith's Greatest Hits 2.......2007-05-07
This one is my favorite Toby Keith CD. I like the others as well but I find I play Greatest Hits 2 more often.
Keep them coming...Keith.......2007-04-16
I bought this Greatest Hits 2 because it has a lot of my favorite songs on it. My favorites are: "How Do You Like Me Now"; "I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight"; "I Wanna Talk About Me"; "Beer For My Horses" duet with Willie Nelson; "Mockingbird" duet with Krystal; "You Ain't Much Fun"; and "Should've Been a Cowboy". I also like "Stays in Mexico". I had to buy another CD to get my very favorite "Big Blue Note". All in all this CD was well worth the money. By the way, I am a 67 year old grandma that loves country western music.
Toby Keith-Greatest Hits 2 CD.......2007-03-26
Received CD in new, perfect condition. Received item before expected! Thank you so much!
this man can sing his butt off........2007-03-08
with him mellow voice all the songs Toby sings; gives this woman the chrills; he is very nice looking. I think he is an easy going type guy; with the most wonderful voice...
Now, I do like you good!!!.......2007-02-24
Smashing. A top-notch selection of up-to-date hits (How do you like me now?, Who's your daddy?), a memory trip with "Should've been a cowboy", some food for thought (My List), duets with Krystal and Willie Nelson (real duets and not just them singing in the back) and plain good old country pieces where Toby Keith gets to display his wry humor, raising that knowing smile that echoes better than a guffaw. In sum, if you were considering to get it, don't hesitate any longer. Do it! You will definitely not regret it. There are no weak spots in this CD.

Amazon.com essential recording
As the late 1980s gradually segued into the early 1990s, the choices of material and the production values Reba McEntire brought to her recordings often seemed to be guided as much by right-brained market savvy as by true left-brain inspiration. This "hits" compilation skims the cream of her commercial achievements during this prolific period in her career. Though there are only 10 tracks, these include landmark No. 1 singles like "You Lie," "Fancy," "Is There Life out There," and "Does He Love You," a heartfelt duet with Linda Davis. --Bob Allen
Customer Reviews:
More Greatest Hits.......2007-07-11
Excellent collection, from teh standpoint of the country music fan, of hits from one of country's greatest female singers. The songs here are all of top-notch quality, enjoyable by even non-country fans.
Reba McEntire Greatest Hits Vol. 2.......2007-05-20
This cd is very good. All Reba songs on this album are not what expected to hear there even better.
Cool tracks, expansive style........2007-03-27
During this time period Reba started to stretch out in new directions and this CD captures it well. The Amazon review makes it seem a bit like Reba was "selling out" by trying new musical styles, but I think she believed in what she was doing, gang, and that's reflected by her choice of a song off this CD--Fancy--to sing at her CMT Giants: REBA special. Sincere smackdowns to Dixie Chicks fan The Expert for using an earlier review of this CD to launch a massive mound of misguided moronities at one of the most decent and gracious performers to ever grace the stage. The Chicks tried the clever liberal marginalization trick right after the 2007 Gore-Chick Grammies when one of them said, "We don't want fans who put us in their CD player along with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith." I have news for the Chicks: no one has ever thought of them as being in the same major league as the other two or ever will. They're being used as part of the ongoing news & entertainment media (NEM) FU to George W. Bush, and when his term ends so will the relentless, sickening free PR campaign the Chicks have enjoyed on MSN.com and a myriad of other media outlets ever since they verbally spit on the president in London. Thus a career ballooned out of proportion by media hot air will come crashing back to earth where it belongs, next to other media-smoke-and-mirrors "stars" like Marilyn Manson and Sinead O'Connor.
Love Reba!.......2007-03-20
I'm not a huge country fan but Reba McEntire is great! She's an amazing musician! This album has a great collection of songs on it! My favorites are "You Lie," "For My Broken Heart," and "Is There Life Out There." Super album...highly recommended!!
One of the best..........2007-02-12
The below reviewer who said Reba took a shot at "real musicians" is crazy!
Reba is AMAZING. I don't bash the Dixie Chicks, I own one album- but I would hardly even put them in the same category as reba. She is a legend in an over produced music industry. Listen to her VOICE. She is amazing and sings with passion. How could you even say she belongs in a convienience store behind the counter? She clearly belongs in the music industry. She knows real country and she knows how to rock an audience. Stupid review.

"We've lost the living room," Emmylou Harris says before her ethereal version of "Mary Danced with Soldiers," "but today I think we got it back." Full of back-home warmth, inspired pairings--Roseanne Cash and John Hiatt, Levon Helm and the host Nitty Gritty Dirt Band--and a song selection that walks the line between traditionals and excellent contemporary material, somehow this follow up to the barrier-breaking first volume is never nostalgic nor aimless. In fact, it's nearly as good--even John Denver sounds inspired. Jimmy Martin sings "Sitting on Top of the World" as if his life depended on it, and Ricky Skaggs and Levon Helm both turn in vocal performances that stand comfortably beside any of their careers. --Roy Francis Kasten
Customer Reviews:
Vol. 2 SUPERIOR to Vol. 1.......2005-10-25
As a fan of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band for more than 30 years, it is easy for me to pick "Will the Circle Be Unbroken Vol. 2" as the band's best effort, by far. In 1989 the album won the Grammy Award for "Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal" plus two other Grammys for individual cuts, and won the Country Music Association's "Album of the Year." Pretty much enough said. Highlights include Paulette Carlson's vocal on "Lovin On the Side," John Denver's vocal on "And So It Goes," the incomparable John Prine on "Grandpa Was a Carpenter," and fine work by NGDB members throughout. (If you want to hear the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in microcosm, listen to their version of Buddy Holly's "Rave On" on the "Uncle Charlie and his Dog Teddy" LP.)
In the sky, Lord, in the sky.......2004-09-16
Some 17 years after their groundbreaking album Will the Circle Be Unbroken, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band decided to record a "sequel". While the original album featured the Dirt Band performing with veterans of the Nashville scene, they are more inclusive this time, teaming with old timers, contemporaries of theirs and even younger people who they may have influenced. While the results are not as good as the original Circle album, (and how could they be?), this is still a solid, enjoyable album. While it is hard to pick a favorite here, I am partial to the Jimmy Martin sung "I'm Sitting on Top of the World". There is a lot to enjoy here. Recommended to fans of "roots" music.
Genuine heart-felt mountain music played by the best.......2004-07-12
I bought this CD back in 1990 and it is one my favorites. The audio is supreme. The music sounds like a bunch of friends having a good time. Cash, Prine, Helm, Hiatt and Cash are the standouts. Even John Denver has a great song. I am not a "country fan." My tastes are Gov't Mule / Phish / Allman Bros.
My favorite Circle album.......2004-06-28
There are three Circle collections. General opinion is that the first album is the best, the third album is a close second and that this is the weakest of the three. I love all three but this one particularly appeals to me. It has many traditional musicians and singers but also a few less obvious singers like John Denver, Levon Helm (of the Band), John Prine, Roger McGuinn (of the Byrds), Paulette Carlson (of Highway 101) and Bruce Hornsby. Perhaps it is the presence of such guests that some dislike but you can't please everybody.
Whatever you may think of the normal music that some of the guests have recorded, they all justify their place on this excellent album of traditional music, sometimes singing songs they've previously recorded, but adapted to a traditional setting. For some of them, it may have been their chance to record some traditional country without upsetting their fans or their record label. Both would understand that this was (for them) a one-off. They certainly made the most of their opportunity.
So we get Bruce Hornsby singing and playing piano on Valley road, but in a traditional country/bluegrass style. Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman, both ex-members of the Byrds, sing and play guitar on You ain't going nowhere, a Bob Dylan song that was recorded by the Byrds in the sixties. Michael Martin Murphey sings and plays guitar on Lost river, one of his own songs. John Hiatt sings a duet with Roseanne Cash on One step over the line. John Prine sings and plays guitar on his song Grandpa was a carpenter.
Some of the songs are oldies like Life's railway to heaven (featuring Johnny Cash), I'm sitting on top of the world (featuring Jimmy Martin), the title track (featuring everybody but particularly Johnny Cash, Roy Acuff and Ricky Skaggs) and Amazing grace, an instrumental solo by Randy Scruggs. Other songs appear to be originals including And so it goes (featuring John Denver), Mary danced with soldiers (featuring Emmylou) and Lovin' on the side (featuring Paulette Carlson).
If you haven't got any of the Circle albums, this album is a great one to start with, especially if you're relatively new to traditional country music.

Country at its Best.......2005-12-11
George Strait - Greatest Hits, vol. 2 is country music at it's best. Any cd from George is amazing, but with hits like: "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind", "The Chair", and "Ocean Front Property" this cd is sure to please any George Strait fan. It is a must have for your collection.
10-Song Essential.......2004-10-08
With "50 Number Ones" out for sale, it's hard to argue a better economical and jam-packed value, but there's no disputing the best 10-song collection belongs to Greatest Hits Vol. 2. George remains the most consistent country artist within the last 40 yrs (I would argue the most consistent in COUNTRY MUSIC HISTORY), and the proof lies in GH Vol 2. For those who remember cassettes (much less 8-tracks, a couple of George's I own), nothing quenched the thirst of country traditionalists in the 1980's like this album. My father and I took many a road trip from Texas to Montana (a one-way 3-day trip) to the tune of GH Vol 2. Absolutely, positively, the soundtrack of my life.
George Strait #1.......2002-12-14
As far as I'm concerned, he is the BEST. I have all his cassetts and C.D.s so wherever I am I can hear him sing. George has stayed true to the REAL COUNTRY music. Not only is he a great singer but he is a wonderful human being and true to himself.
george strait at his best.......2002-10-11
this cd brings back alot of memories with 10 classic hits by george strait like "nobody in there right mind wouldv'e left her","ocean front property" and "all my ex's live in texas" if you like classic george then pick this cd up.
The BEST of George Strait.......2002-05-10
After years of shunning country, this was the first CD that made me fall back in love with it. Since then, I have embraced other artists such as Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, and Brooks& Dunn. Among many others! A # 1 CLASSIC album that opens doors and keeps memories alive. Real down-home country that also is not too "twangy". I recommend it for fans of George and also budding country fans that like the 'roots of country' but not too much cry in the beer stuff. GREATEST HITS # 1 also is a perfect collection. He still ranks as one of the best, so anything he comes out with is GREAT, but this is a BESTBUY!!!!

Good old fashion country.......2007-06-12
They don't make country music like this anymore. This is it! The Storyteller. The kids today are missing out on a legend. Parents you should introduce them to Mr. Hall
Old dogs, children and watermelon wine...........2006-07-12
Every now and then I occasionally come across a song I'd never
heard before and that really knocks me out leaving me breathless
because of its beauty. I purchased a TimeLife DVD set about
Country Legends. On the 1st of total 3 DVD's I heard and saw
the interpretation of such an incredible beautiful song that I
immediately started searching on which CD I could get it so I
can listen and listen and listen to it constantly. The song is
Old dogs, children and watermelon wine by Tom T. Hall and I
found it on this CD. It's the musical background that's so
fantastic + the lyrics and the way of singing, almost reciting,
each and every line. I couldn't care for the rest of the songs
but fortunately there are at least another 5 or 6 very nice ones which easily makes it 5 stars worth although this particular one
song already deserves such rating by itself. Songs like these make life worth living!!
A real story teller.......2005-10-24
Have enjoyed his music for years and bought this to replace my old and worn out cassette tape. YOu can understand what he is saying, he tells a tale and puts a smile on your face doing it.
I mean, can you ever forget the farmer in his bed worrying bout his hogs? If you haven't heard about him, it is time you did.
Simple and down to earth...
The Old Storyteller!.......2003-03-10
Tom T. Hall, from Olive Hill, Kentucky (pop. 1809), had 41 chart hit from 1967-1985, according to Billboard. He has also written many others, including "Harper Valley PTA". 8 of the 11 tracks on this CD made the Top 10 on Billboard charts. High points are "Country Is", "I Care", "I Like Beer" and most notably a wonderful "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine". The Tom T style is "storytelling" and this may not be to everyone's tastes. Listening to "Who's Gonna Feed Them Hogs?" may change a few minds. This reviewer would urge country fans to experience this singer/songwriter for the sheer variety of his approach to country. Somehow, it seems incomplete to recommend a CD to "round out your collection", but in this instance I believe such advice is justified.
"I love..." Tom T. Hall's humanity and humor.......2002-03-26
Another fine collection, mixing the funny with the fundamental. This album has the hits "I Love" and "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine" and "I Care" representing his sentimental side. Showing off his quirky tendencies are the sensational "Who's Gonna Feed Them Hogs" and "The Little Lady Preacher" and "Ravishing Ruby" and the kids' classic "Sneaky Snake" and "That Song is Driving Me Crazy." Don't think of Tom T. as a "country" singer---just think of him as Mark Twain with a guitar. Nice voice, nice stories, make you laugh, make you think, make you feel. What more can anyone ask for?

If, like me, you love yesturdays country music, you don't want to miss this one! Just look at the titles! This is a great collection! Old Statlers.......2006-03-10
It's good to hear some of the old Statler songs - brings back memories
Good work! Better Than "the Best" !.......2003-06-24
"Rides Again" should appeal to broader country audience than "The Best of the Statlers". RA is very well produced and done in a solid Nashville Sound/mellow country tradition. Like "the Best", all 11 tracks made the Billboard charts, this batch between 1976 and 1980. This reviewer loved "How to Be a Country Star" which is a tribute to several icons in the field. "Silver Medals and Sweet Memories" is a heartfelt tribute to a dad who never returned from WW2 and I actually used "Your Picture In the Papers" as background for a Toastmasters speech! What's not to like? Statler fans who don't own this one can safely buy it. The curious should be brave and at least click on some of the audio samples. If "Rides Again" won't make you a fan, nothing else will. This is still the original 4 from Staunton, VA; Harold, Phil, Don and the late Lew DeWitt with that trademarked tight harmony. I believe Lew's health problems led to his leaving the group shortly after the time frame that "Rides Again" brackets.

Country Hits and Misses.......2007-05-30
I ordered this CD for the Floyd Tillman tracks, which are almost impossible to find elsewhere. The rest of the mix is spotty at best, with some tracks bordering on mere filler.
HOT!!.......2003-01-09
As fine a compilation of serious pre-nashville glitz honky tonk as you'll find. REally a great disc.
Classic soundtrack to an idealized 50s honky-tonk.......2000-04-04
I've had this disc for a few weeks now, and I finally figured out what it sounds like: a jukebox at some idealized 50's honky tonk. Columbia has gone back to the vaults to pull out a wealth of country honky tonk material, *27* tracks, clocking in at an incredible *73+* minutes! The recordings range from the mid 40's through the early 60's. The sound is really quite impressive throughout.
Artists include Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys on a mid-40's blues, Floyd Tillman, "Little" Jimmy Dickens, Lefty Frizell, Marty Robbins, Carl Smith, Johnny Horton (forever wiping out the sound of "North to Alaska" and "The Battle of New Orleans" by ripping it up in an almost rockabilly style on "Honky Tonk Man"), Ray Price (with great versions of "Heartaches by the Numbers", and "Crazy Arms"), and more.
Lots of fiddle and peddle steel round out the package. A great buy.
Half is ok, half is fantastic.......1999-10-01
The first half is weak, but the second half (starting with "Hey Joe") makes up for it. It's a chronological presentation. A good sampler. Every song from then on is FANTASTIC!
Start here without hesitation........1999-04-17
These artists had all the technology they needed. Just listen to this stuff! Ones who can deliver a honky tonk song like this are not in such desperate need of digital assistance! A good intro to real country songs by real country singers and musicians.

More Pop From the Country Queen .......2006-09-19
This CD is a sequel to the 2004 collection of pop crossover hits and pop recordings of country legend Skeeter Davis from the 1960's. That album apparently sold well enough to merit a second helping but as you might guess by looking over the song collection for the most part these aren't actual "hits" (only tracks 4 and 5 made the Billboard pop charts) a more precise title for this collection might have been "The Pop Years" or "Skeeter Davis Pop" or the like. Most of these were just album tracks although #10, 11, and 16 were country chart records for Skeeter.
But don't let that scare you away because this is a wonderful collection of "Nashville sound" country-pop from this talented star. Skeeter ventures all over the pop landscape with these tracks from the easy listening "It Was Only a Heart" to the amazingly dead-on intrepretation of 60s British pop in "Sad Sad World". "Timothy" has always been one of my favorite Davis cuts, the 30-plus Skeeter wonderfully capturing the obsessive ador of a lovestruck teenybopper. You can practically see her scribbling Timothy's name all over the lyric sheet with cartoon hearts! Skeeter earned two country top female vocal Grammy nominations for 1964's wistful "He Says the Same Things to Me" (always a favorite of Skeeterities) and 1972's "One Tin Solider", originally sung in the movie BILLY JACK by Coven. "Instinct for Survival", although a minor country charter, is a superb song penned by Jim Glaser. The remake of "End of the World" is somewhat controversial with fans with it's overly sugary "adult contemporary" production but it is interesting to hear Skeeter perform her most famous song in a new arrangement. The cover art on the CD is absolutely beautiful, the nicest of any Skeeter CD. I highly recommend this collection by one of the great female vocalists of her era in any genre.
