5 out of 5 stars There when I needed it........2006-02-25

My mother was dying in a hospice. We needed some music to play for her while she was there. Two of her favorite hymns were on the one cd. It was hard to find that. Amazon came through with the selection, and overnited it to me. My mother passed 2 days later. I'll always be grateful for that cd.

5 out of 5 stars Hymns.......2005-07-28

Tennessee Ernie Ford was a very popular singer when I was a child and my parents and siblings loved to watch his TV show. He would always end the show with a hymn and I wanted to revisit those songs and the happy days of my youth. The Hymns and Ernie are as good as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2004-11-23

I bought this CD specifically for the song "My Faith Looks Up To Thee" which is hard to find on a CD. This hymn was written in 1830 by Ray Palmer (lyrics) and put to music later by Lowell Mason, a man Palmer met on the streets of Boston. Mason took home the lyric, wrote a melody, and a few days later found Palmer and told him no matter what Palmer did for the rest of his life, he would be remembered for the hymn.

Another gem here is "Just As I Am Without One Plea." This is the amazing story of Charlotte Elliot. This bedridden, sick woman was feeling sorry she could not help her pastor with his fundraising for charity as she was simply too sick. After writing this hymn in 1835, she was shocked to find copies of it being sold by the thousands. The proceeds were given to the very charity Charlotte thought she could not help. After she died in 1871, others found stacks of letters sent to her from all over the world, thanking her for changing their lives and bringing them to Christ.

These are not the only two historical hymns in collection.

This is not just a CD of the great hymns of our time. This CD is a living history of hymns going far back in time.

It is a treasure.

I am thankful I got a chance to see Tennessee Ernie Ford when he appeared on TV during his glory years.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Perfect.......2003-10-29

The 1st CD of Mr. Ford's that I purchased was entitled Amazing Grace: 40 Treasured Hymns -- a year later and I still frequently pop that magnificent collection of hymns into the drive. I HAD to have more -- so I purchased 2 other Ernie hymn CDs (including this one) -- and these certainly do not disappoint. While these CDs are comprised of age-old favorite hymns, Mr. Ford's unique, flawless bass voice gives them added life. Blend Mr. Ford's pure, non-pretentious bass voice with a judicious mixture of crisp alto's and tenor's, as some of the selections do, and you are presented with truly, magnificent works of art that seem to never get old. Just drop the CD into the drive, sit back, relax, and let Mr. Ford sing you back home with this soothing collection of favorite hymns.

5 out of 5 stars Give me that old time religion!.......2003-05-10

I set out to find a CD that contained the old hymns that I loved as a child, which have now seemed to have disappeared from the churches in my area. But, I also wanted hymns that I could sing along with. Well, with this CD I hit pay dirt!

This CD is a compilation of twenty-two of Tennessee Ernie Ford's (1919-91) most requested hymns. Sung with Ford's wonderful voice, the hymns are great to listen to. And more, I found that I could happily sing along with all but a couple which were sung a little to idiosyncratically for me (What a Friend We Have in Jesus is one, sadly).

So, if you want to hear some of those wonderful old hymns again, then I can't recommend this CD enough. I have it in the CD player in my car, and it is not coming out soon!

4 out of 5 stars For R&H Fans.......2001-12-03

If you're a fan of R&H, then you'll enjoy this CD full of classical music with classical voices. Artists such as Gordon MacRae, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Dick Haymes, Jo Stafford, Bobby Darin, and Nancy Wilson. Be aware: this CD does not contain recordings from the original cast releases, rather it provides new and jazzy versions by popular artists of R&H's era. I bought this CD because of the cover art (I'm into graphic design as well as everything else in the world of the arts) and because I'm a fan of R&H...what a treat. This is for those R&H fans who can appreciate all interpretations of their work. :)

5 out of 5 stars Garland, Stafford, Lee and more sing Broadway classics.......2001-02-04

"Hello Young Lovers" is probably the best of the Capitol Sings series, not only because the hits of Rogers & Hammerstein remain popular but also because this album has some great covers taken from the label's inventory from 1949 to 1965. One of the hallmarks of the series is that you get Broadway standards done in different musical styles such as Bobby Darin's peppy title track, Nancy Wilson jazzy version of "People Will Say We're in Love" and Jo Stafford's sultry and mellow "Some Enchanted Evening." There are group harmonies from the Andrews Sisters, the Starlighters and the Jeff Alexander Singers. There are also some songs you have probably never heard, such as Helen O'Connell doing "No Other Love" from "Me and Juliet." For those of you who are very open minded, there are gender switches, with Tennessee Ernie Ford singing "My Favorite Things," Vic Damone doing "The Sound of Music," and the aforementioned Stafford cover of "Some Enchanted Evening." The album saves the best for last, with Judy Garland's "You'll Never Walk Alone" and the Sinfonia of London playing "The Carousel Waltz." Even if you never were around to catch the originals, if you are fans of Rodgers & Hammerstein you will enjoy listening to Peggy Lee, Al Martino and the rest doing their unique interpretations of some of your favorite songs.

5 out of 5 stars Very good and highly original interpretations.......2000-07-07

One of the best of the series! Far better than for example the Cole Porter and also better than the Gershwin CD in my opinion. (The compilations by Brad Benedict, who compiled the greatest part of the series except i.e. the ones mentioned above generally prove a sense of humor). Sound quality (remastered):*****

Also highly recommendable: The Irvin Berlin collection (listen for example to the ecstatic interpretation of "Blue Skies").

Those who are most familiar with Ernie's novelty tunes or his gospel music are in for a real surprise if they pick up this CD. This is one of the best music purchases I have made in a long time. Ernie's renditions of these songs are beautifully done, and Glen's playing is outstanding. Add to that the brief chatter between the two, and you have a bit of country music history.

My only wish is that this CD had more than 10 tracks to it. But, alas, it was recorded in the era of vinyl, so I am just thankful to have this many songs.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite as advertised........2006-07-01

I originally purchased this set under the assumption that it was a CD copy of the album set of the same name produced by Reader's Digest in the seventies. However, upon receipt I discovered that it was in fact produced by Guideposts Music, although it may have distributed by Reader's Digest at some point. I was disappointed, but upon listening to the set I found it to be a good set overall, although I wasn't too keen on some of the contemporary Christian tunes on the third disc. If you like hymns and gospel tunes then I would recommend this set.

5 out of 5 stars Another classic from Ford.......2001-08-26

If you have listened to many hymns sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford, you are aware of his ability in this genre. You may not, however, be familiar with his versions of these songs. On this album, Ford goes a little deeper into the hymn book. While many of the tracks are hymn standards, there are a few with which one may not be totally familiar; however, this, in no way, diminishes from the quality of the recordings. If you have a lot of Ford's work but still want more, this wouldn't be a bad way to go.
