This impressive--and frankly, fun--musical document is still sending out shock waves almost 50 years after its original 1952 vinyl release. The Smithsonian's six-CD reissue is painstakingly researched, annotated, and packaged (even boasting an enhanced disc for the techno-capable). Unlike field recorders, eccentric filmmaker/collector/musicologist Harry Smith assembled the Anthology from commercially released (though obscure) 78 rpm discs issued between 1927 and 1935. Its broad scope--from country blues to Cajun social music to Appalachian murder ballads--was monumentally influential, setting musicians like Bob Dylan down the path to folk fandom. The White House started its own national music library with the Anthology; anyone with more than a passing interest in American roots music should do the same. --Michael Ruby

THE Chronicles.......2007-07-12
totally essential listening.......2007-02-15
Aside from some essential listening ("Coo Coo Bird," "Stackalee," "Mississippi Boweavil Blues," "I wish I Was a Mole in the Ground," etc. etc.), the package has some great supplementary material. It's very interesting to learn about the song information and performer information that Smith collected with his anthology, but it's also interesting to get a glimpse into his project, seeing how he relentlessly collected and chose which songs to represent. He was a true lover of music, and that love is reflected in his project.
Please don't come to this compilation expecting pristine sound quality--it was assembled in the 50's, which means that the recordings come from then as well as much earlier--it's about the music and performers anyway, and a little bit of scratch really doesn't detract that much from the organic, down home experience. It IS a bit of a shame that there are 6 CDs, but really only about 4 full CDs worth of music--it would have been OK with me if the Ballad/Social Music/Songs organization was not cleanly divided between discs to save space, since the division isn't very efficient, but I suppose the reissuers wanted to emulate the original vinyl collection. I don't really find the material to be homogeneous like the second spotlight reviewer does, although I do agree that Roots and Blues: A Retrospective is also a great compilation--I'd recommend getting both for a great complementary experience.
Hopefully this set never goes out of print, as it's a great piece of art that any music fan or musician can learn a lot from--and enjoy, too! It's a shame that Smith had to preserve this music as it was beginning to die out even as he was collecting it, but it's also heartwarming that such classic sounds can be preserved for us to hear so many years later and keep the tradition alive. Enjoy the living history!
The grandfather of the reissue records.......2005-02-21
Listening to many cuts on this album you can hear the source of much material for folk groups as diverse as the New Lost City Ramblers and The Holy Modal Rounders, rock groups like Canned Heat, and The Grateful Dead. Some of the melodies will be familiar to fans of Dylan, others to Jorma Kaukonan listeners. There are otehrs -- many many others.
This set is the source, the headwaters of reissues, and revivals. An essential part of any folk music collection.
Necessary........2003-05-28
Essential.......2002-11-30
This is the greatest mix tape ever made, and an essential cultural artifact, not only of the vernacular music of the hills & highways of pre-electrification America, but also of the folk movement ofthe fifties and sixties (the primer fromwhic all else was derived) and by extension of the hippy movement following closely thereafter.
SOme of this music is really wild...

Good but short.......2007-01-09
this is it. Englebert has his own style and was true to form
in this cd. I'm not a real fan of his but I bought this as
a gift for someone who was and I ended up listening to it
because of the selection of songs included. If your an
Englebert fan and also if you're not, this will please. My only
complaint is there are not enough songs included.
songs for the romantic at heart.......2005-02-14
Bebu Silvetti is well known in the world of Latin music, where he creates his instrumental magic for superstars like Luis Miguel and Rocio Durcal. His arrangements are a fantastic blend for Engelbert's style, who with good reason has earned the title of "The King of Romance".
This CD has 9 of the most tender and loving of the 12 songs found on the "Love Unchained" CD (missing from the CD are "Answer Me", "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay", and the upbeat "Such a Night"), and the final track, "There's No Song Like a Slow Song" is from Engelbert's 1996 CD, "After Dark", and is a lilting number with a contemporary country feel, and a spoken verse that is a reminder of that other King of music, Elvis.
This compilation is a winner...perfect for lovers, candlelight dinners, and those ever young at heart. Total playing time for this nicely priced CD is approximately 37 minutes.

A wonderful way to revisit the '50s!.......2000-06-18
Mario Lanza's "Be My Love" is nearly operatic, Perez Prado's "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" represents the big band sound, and Harry Belafonte's catchy "Banana Boat (Day-O)" has a strong calypso character.
The mastering of this disc is very good and the sound quality may surprise you. The Nipper's 1950s GH discs are an excellent way to jump start a '50s collection or to just take a quiet journey back to a simpler musical time. Either way, this disc and its companion will provide many hours of listening pleasure. Highly recommended.

Crystal Gayle always left the twangy stuff to big sister Loretta Lynn in order to concentrate on more mainstream pop balladry, a form she still handles with grace and style. Although born in Kentucky, Gayle was actually raised in Indiana, and here she interprets 15 gems from fellow Hoosier Hoagy Carmichael. Credit Gayle for putting Carmichael's timeless melodies front and center on this delightful, charming record. Though the arrangements range from small ensemble to full orchestra, they are always in service to the song, as are Gayle's elegant readings, which are tastefully colored with tinges of blues and jazz. Willie Nelson, no stranger to the American standard, duets on one track, and like Gayle, he's wise enough to let great songs do most of the work for him. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

of the best.Crystal's emote and timing is top notch, the romance is
intense. We need to start a new catagory for music like this,"ADULT ROMANCE
This set is an all time classic and a must for connoisseurs of sophiticated music.Hoagy Carmichael ,of course, was a big band superstar
in the 40's and is famous for the song"stardust".I love "buttermik sky"
here and the song could be perfect for weddings. You won't regret buying
this.I guarrentee it.

- The songs of Hoagy Carmichael
- Traditionally jazzy music
- Crystal Gayle
Don't be deterred by the fact that this CD is apparently out of print; order one of the new or used copies from Amazon (I did).
This is classic American music, beautifully performed by Ms. Gayle.
- You might think that "Heart and Soul" is just that simplistic little duet that kids play on the piano. In fact, it's a sweet, pretty love song, as you'll find when you listen to the lovely arrangement on this CD.
- How about "Georgia on my Mind"; you've heard the Ray Charles version, but try Crystal's -- it'll make you homesick for Georgia even if you've never been there.
- And "Stardust", Hoagy's most famous song, has been performed in countless different versions. Crystal's is one of the prettiest I've heard.
- Next is "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening". When it starts up, you may conclude that it's just an old-fashioned, corny song; but when Crystal swings into the refrain, you might not be able to keep from tapping your toes.
- "Two Sleepy People" is a Hoagy song I was not familiar with; Crystal teams up with Willie Nelson (another Carmichael fan) to deliver a charming duet.
And it goes on and on, one wonderful song after another.
This CD is a winner all the way. Highly recommended!

On Pictures and Paintings, Charlie Rich got the chance before he died to make the jazz record he always had in him, though of course, this is Charlie Rich, so even when he's doing Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo," it's never just jazz. Always a singer's singer, Rich slides gracefully here--in the same song, sometimes even in the same phrase--from jazz and blues to pop and gospel, his gruff vocals straining, sighing, tearing, pausing, living in these songs until you'll swear you've lived them too. Backed by a swinging combo that includes his own Stan Getz-influenced piano, Rich is flawless throughout, whether he's laying down a definitive "Am I Blue" or revisiting his own "Feel Like Going Home." --David CantwellCustomer Reviews:
Perfect late night music.......2007-03-18
"Pictures and Paintings" is just that; a series of pictures and paintings giving us a glimpse of the palette of influences that made Charlie Rich one of the most eclectic artists to come out of the Sun Studio stable, which is saying something considering that Sun produced not only Presley, Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and a group of singing prisoners. Sam Phillips often said that Rich was the most talented musician he ever had at Sun. Presley, Perkins, Cash and Lewis made it bigger, sooner, but Rich kept true to his soul and made records that were so challenging and varied that consistent success eluded him for years.
You may not hear anything on this disc as lush as "Behind Closed Doors" but songs like "Anywhere You Are" and "You Don't Know Me" come close in their simple, understated style. Gutsy, Delta blues like "Don't Put No Headstone On My Grave" and "Juice Head Baby" reveal a gritty sound that comes mainly from life/survival. Overall the disc has good sound and feel (coincidentally recorded, in part, at Sam Phillips' studio) that makes for perfect late night listening, alone or otherwise.
Could Elvis have made an album like this say in 1987 or 1997, had he lived and cleaned up? The world will never know, but we get a glimpse of what might have been with "Pictures and Paintings", a great final musical statement from a fellow Delta musician.

As with 1999's Respect box, which chronicled women recording artists, Rhino again attempts to capture and condense a mighty field with the six-CD Say It Loud! And again, it largely succeeds. A companion to the VH1 series of the same name, Say It Loud! tells one story and many. It covers the development of many related genres, the business of locking many outsize talents and personalities into the grooves of records, and the music as it mirrored a rustling, ever-changing society--that last underscored by the inclusion of spoken sound bites (everyone from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Sammy Davis Jr.). But within these larger themes move many smaller but no less compelling tales. The roughly chronological programming allows for accidental, startling juxtapositions--disc one places Paul Robeson's pained, dignified reading of "Ol' Man River" just a few tracks away from bluesman Son House's insistence in "My Black Mama (Part 1)" that "there ain't no burnin' Hell." From there, pop ballads, big bands, bop, gospel, doo-wop, rock & roll, soul from Motown! Memphis! and Philly!, gorgeous civil-rights-era jazz, funk, and rap cohere and speak to one another in a selection about as good as can be expected given its length and various legal restrictions. (The most glaring omission is Stevie Wonder.) Any taint of "this stuff is good for you" is lost in the parade of great gifts, personalities, statements, dance crazes, poetry, and word games. If the above track listing contains lots of names you don't recognize, Say It Loud! will offer you a topnotch one-stop survey course. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
