Based on the 2000 film about a young British boy who tries to escape a future as coalminer by training in ballet, Billy Elliot--The Musical feels like an exemplary screen-to-stage adaptation, making the best use of composer Elton John's melodic resourcefulness. Fans of John's regular output need to be warned that this album is show tunes all the way and that they'd be hard-pressed to recognize the songs as usual fare by the author of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Your Song." Still, they really should give the CD a chance. Fans of musical theater, on the other hand, will need no prodding. They are likely to be enchanted by this recording, which shows that John has thoroughly absorbed the genre's classic strain. The show is very catchy, with well-structured, dramatic songs and some genuine tearjerkers ("The Letter"). Sir Elton even proves he's listened to great "jazz hands" classics (some by Kander and Ebb, perhaps) on "Shine," which even requests some "ol' razzle dazzle." Teaming up not with usual lyricist Bernie Taupin but with the film's screenwriter, Lee Hall (and its director, Stephen Daldry), John has written a lovely stage score, as evidenced on this recording of the London cast. Note that John himself performs three songs from the show on a bonus CD. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Stirring to say the least.......2007-02-06
What a stirring musical! I had heard so much about this musical having seen the film version and knowing a musical adaptation was going to be made. Several people had recommended it after have they had the opportunity to see it on the West End. Also being a huge fan of Elton John, enjoying his pop records as well as his musical ventures, I was really interested in giving this CD a listen...
...and I'm sure glad I did! Again, I'll say it's absolutely stirring. The chorus numbers are probably the most powerful particularly the opening number "The Stars Look Down" which features as a theme several times throughout the score. You can really imagine them filling an entire auditorium.
Liam Mower as Billy has the sweetest most resonating voice. When he sings "The Letter" and his Mum joins in, you are moved to tears. Other great numbers include "Shine" where Haydn Gwynne gives her character of Mrs Wilkinson such a personality. Her voice isn't particularly outstanding but I love her character. It's nice to see characters like Mr Braithwaite being given some personality and filling out Grandma's back story with her own song "Grandma's Song". Other uplifting numbers include "Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher" and "Expressing Yourself".
There is mild language but it adds to the mood of the piece. All in all thoroughly entertaining and I can't wait for it to come to Sydney in 2008!
London Musical.......2007-01-10
A bit different than the movie which was delightful, this soundtrack remains very loyal to the original.
A review for fans of Elton John - Not musicals.......2006-12-07
First and foremost, I am huge fan of Elton John. Unfortunately, the same can not be said for my opinion of most musicals such as this. That being said, I would only ask that before you disagree with the value of this review, please take that into account. I've had this CD for quite a while now, periodically going back to give it ONE MORE TRY. And I just can't get into it. I find the music here to be so overbearingly scripted and unoriginal, that it immediately leaves my player for weeks before I try it again. And again.... The bottom line is that I've heard these songs before.... Many, many times.... The point of this review is by no means to knock the art of musicals. For those of you that are fans of them, I'm sure this soundtrack is a true joy to listen to and I hope you enjoy it. (I see that many of you do). This review is for those folks who, like me, were on the fence about buying this CD because they are ardent supporters of EJ's more pop-oriented music. Trust me on this one, if you have the special edition of Peachtree Road, or have already downloaded Elton's versions of "Electricity" and "The Letter", you have all you need from this release. As a last note, for those who are still not sure, Elton's version of "Maggie Thatcher" is a good indication of the kind of songs that permeate this soundtrack. If you enjoy his version of that, there is a very good chance you will like this CD more than I do. Thanks for reading.....
Elton John's musical.......2006-11-10
Very British in its style with lots of thumping music.
There are some beautiful songs -Electricity- that make the record collection worth having.
Billly Elliot.......2006-08-27
Wow, what a musical. This is the best one Elton John has written. The subject, Billy Elliot, learning ballet in a working class English coal mining town is great. The movie was excellent but this sounds so much better. I am only sorry that the musical has not come to Broadway yet. Just wait until it opens! It will run forever. Get this album now.

EXCELLENT.......2005-08-09
One of his best CD's. Has a couple of his old tracks in there at the end too. Every song is a winner. I wish he was having a concert near where I live. I DEFINITELY recommend this CD. If you like Billy Dean you will absolutely OVE this CD. If you like country music you will LOVE this CD. I bought it, put it on my computer, and let my mom have the CD for her car, and now she won't give it back. It's that good. Billy Dean is back and better than ever.
His Best In a LONG Time.......2005-07-30
To keep my review short, I will only say that if you are a Billy Dean fan, this is, in my opinion, his best album since "Young Man", which was done a LONG time ago. And that includes "Men'll Be Boys", which I thought was a very good recording. I did not think this new CD was ever going to come out, despite the fact that he had recently had two new major hit singles ("Thank God I'm a Country Boy" and "Let Them Be Little"). I was also pleasantly surprised to listen to the two "new" bonus tracks. "Somewhere In My Broken Heart" has always been my all time favorite Billy Dean song. In fact, I wish they would release this version of it as a single all over again. And, "Billy The Kid" shows that his voice is as strong today as it was 15 years ago, although, I would have rather he had re-recorded "Only The Wind" instead. It has been way, WAY too long since B.D. released an album. Hopefully, this will reflect a comeback for him (as it should) instead of a farewell. Oops. I guess this review wasn't so short after all.
What a Gift!.......2005-04-12
You know, years ago my late father told me that 'boys don't become men until after they turn 40.' Well, listening to the tracks of the new album, I must say I understand now Dad! There is a wonderful new depth, strength, passion, experience and maturity to Billy Dean's voice, his song selection and the entire arc of this album.
It is simply wonderful - and oh so encouraging - that there are people out there in this world, who continue working and growing at their craft/skill. That reaching a certain level of success does not breed complacency. That passing the age of 40 shouldn't mean the end of anything - rather it is just the beginning of a great age!
Billy Dean is such a great example of that to us, and to his children. He may have left the public arena for a few years with his musical gifts to focus on his children (and what a great decision that was!), but this album shows that he didn't let the music leave him nor did he allow it to flounder. Instead he kept working and practicing, honing his incredible gift and talents, until today he graciously offers us this new and glorious present.
Thank you Mr. Dean for proving that we do get better with age, that 'dropping off' the radar for a while can be a wonderful thing in so many ways, and for once again sharing your incredible talent and voice with all of us.
Welcome Back, Billy Dean!!.......2005-04-09
It has been 7 years since there's been a new collection of music from this very talented, yet underrated artist. I can tell you that the wait was worth it. This collection of songs stands up to the best albums in the business, including Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, and Gratchen Wilson. As a matter of fact, I think this album is better than anyone else's right now.
His experience in love and as a father to his two kids runs deep in this album. The raw emotion and lyrics really shine through. Every song on this album is amazing!! I also like the fact that he wrote or co-wrote all but one of the songs on this album! This album is a must-have for any country music fan! You won't be disappointed. Welcome back, Billy Dean!!!!
THANK GOODNESS HE IS BACK!.......2005-04-03
After taking a few years off from recording and being in the spotlight to be a Dad, write songs, etc., Billy Dean is back with an awesome effort! Thank goodness! I know a lot of people may hate what I am about to say but I believe this......Billy Dean has more grit and spirit in his music than both George Strait and Brooks & Dunn combined! I think they are OVERRATED!!!!!! Billy Dean is what music is all about.......he wrote all but one on this album (Thank God I'm A Country Boy.....remake). It contains both upbeat songs as well as wonderful ballads delivered excellently in his baritone voice.......he is at the top of his game! Glad to have you back Billy!

A great overview of Billy's Capitol Recordings from the 90s.......2005-03-29
Lanky Billy Dean's 1990-98 Capitol/Liberty Records tenure had been previously anthologized with three skimpy ten-track sets (Greatest Hits, Love Songs, Certified Hits), all of which overlapped greatly and left off key hits. Fortunately, revived interest in Dean's music - thanks mainly to his current top ten Curb Records' hit "Let Them Be Little" - has prompted Capitol to finally assemble a decent retrospective, the aptly titled The Very Best Of Billy Dean.
This 17-track set includes all of Dean's top 40 country hits as well as his admirable rendition of "Yesterday" from the out of print 1995 cd Come Together: America Salutes the Beatles. It reminds how effective Dean's clear, folky baritone is at conveying sincerity, particularly on simple, matter of fact ballads like "Somewhere In My Broken Heart," "You Don't Count The Cost," and "Only The Wind." There are also plenty of uptempo gems to be found here, such as the nostalgic "Billy The Kid," the sassy "That Girl's Been Spying On Me," and a cover of Dave Mason's "We Just Disagree." But slow and poignant is what Dean does best, and in fact, better than most in modern country music.

Don't know what to think.......2004-05-05
For some reason, I get confused about Billy Dean. I listen to his music, and I really like it. And then I read reviews of the same music, and it seems no one else likes him. So I get on this kick that he's not really that good.
But deep down inside, I love his music, forget the critics!!!! This is a great cd to have, although, I would recomend getting the original realeases these songs were on.
And when you listen to these songs, forget about every critic you have ever heard.
But down to business, this release kind of has a generic feel to it. Not really any notes or anything, just his big hits thrown together to make a buck or two. Wich they had included "We Just Disagree" which is Dean's best moment. But that's fine, don't include his best song on his Greatest Hits.
Give it a Shot.......2003-08-19
I had the opportunity to hear Billy Dean play Aug. 2003 at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. He is such a cutie and the words to his music seem as if they come from his heart. I haven't listened to any of his CD's but loved all the music he played in Nashville. I am surprised I never heard of him before this. He is awesome. I am finally going to buy this CD and look forward to the opportunity to singing along with him!
Solid Greatest Hits Album.......2003-08-15
Billy Dean seems like one of those guys who writes good songs, but can't manage to make it as an artist in the mainstream. Although he had a number of hits, he never really positioned himself as one of country music's elite. Six of the songs on this album weren't written by Mr. Dean, but he makes them his own. "Somewhere In My Broken Heart" is a good song, but it doesn't draw the attention that a slicker, though less talented, song done by a guy like John Michael Montgomery would get(By the way, I'm not picking on Montgomery, his songs are okay, but I think that Dean is so much better). I don't understand this reasoning. Dean deserves a lot more respect than he has received.
Anyway, listen to this album if you like your country a little more on the mellow, folkish side. "Only the Wind" is a great track on this disc. "If There Hadn't Been You" has probably been played at a wedding or two. The standout on this album is from the "8 Seconds" soundtrack(Somebody say Luke Perry). "Once In A While" will pull on your heart whether or not you've seen the movie or even know who Lane Frost is. This song will make you cry. As a matter of fact, watch "8 Seconds" and wait till the end to hear this song. It will get you, I promise.
Buy this album, you won't be dissatisfied.
A Great Greatest Hits Package........2000-08-04
Billy Dean's Songs Mean Alot To Me Like 1991's "Somewhare In My Broken Heart", 1992's "Billy The Kid", "Only The Wind" And "If There Haden't Been You". This Is Great To Have For Your Collection.
Billy Dean is the greatest.......1999-10-07
I got to actually meet Billy Dean Aug 24, 1999 in Nashville after a performance at Tootsies Orchid Lounge. He was very friendly and very tall and accomodated this star struck fan with a hug! When I got back, I ordered this CD and it was great! I highly recommend it to all...incl RM

Love Songs by Billy Dean.......2007-05-12
Billy Dean's voice is made for Love songs. He's one of my favorite artists and I have and want all the music he makes. I ordered it and received it within a few days. It's in perfect condition.
Dean's List.......2000-07-14
Yep, Billy should make the top of the Dean's List in country music. He has one of the most expressive and emotional deliveries in the field. This collection of some of Billy's best love songs illustrates his ability to sound both country and "pop". "Somewhere in My Broken Heart," "If It Hadn't Been You," "If My Heart Should Love Again," and all the others demonstrate Billy's vocal abilities. Sadly missing, though, is his "By My Song," which is one of his most beautiful ballads.

It's what I do-- is a great CD!.......2000-05-23
Billy Dean is one of best country singers around. "It's What I do" is an all around feel good album/CD. One of Billy's best! This is an album/CD that you can dance to from begining to end and do it again. Even if you have had a trying day this album can be a comfort to listen to.
"It's what I do", covers a wide veriety of situations or topics, in an upbeat dancable tempo. I can't believe this is a country album. Love It!
I was never a big contry music fan until the mid '90's. Billy Dean's music is part of the reason for that. I can not recommend this music enough.
GREAT CD!! His BEST yet!.......1999-03-20
I love this cd by Billy Dean! Its a great country cd by one of the best new country singers of today. The title track is very catchy and lovely and so is the rest of the cd. I highly recommend this cd.
