Despite the budget-bin marketing of 1996--there are no photos or illustrations on the package--it includes nine new Haggard compositions and contributions from such admirers as Dwight Yoakam, Buck Owens, Iris DeMent, Johnny Paycheck, and John Anderson. 1996 may not match Haggard's great late-'60s work, but it's better than 95 percent of the country releases of the '90s. When two Haggard tribute albums appeared in 1994, the subject himself was most impressed by DeMent's version of "Big City." Haggard not only hired her as an opening act, but recorded her brilliant song about her father's death, "No Time to Cry," for 1996. Also impressive are the graceful, swinging, blue-collar laments "Truck Driver's Blues" and "Too Many Highways." --Geoffrey Himes

Into Broadway's creative vacuum of revivals, movie adaptations, and Hollywood star vehicles comes Rent, the story of squatters, junkies, performance artists, struggling musicians, drag queens, aspiring filmmakers, and HIV-positives (and you thought Miss Saigon's helicopter landing was cool). Undoubtedly among the defining pop cultural events of 1996, Rent has already won four Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. More importantly, it threatens to bring substance back to the Great White Way.Transposing Puccini's 100-year-old opera La Bohème into modern day Bohemia (19th-century Paris's Left Bank becomes late-20th-century New York's East Village where the scourge of tuberculosis becomes the plague of AIDS) Rent celebrates life among the young, sick, and unconventional. While Broadway shows are hardly the place for authentic portrayals of the latest marginalized hipsters, composer Jonathan Larson (who died at age 36, days before his musical opened) managed to sculpt vivid characters and scenes that bring Avenue A as close as it will ever come to 42nd Street. And by telling a socially relevant story of living without the guarantee of a future (renting, that is), Larson does his own little bit to define an X'ed generation. At worst, Rent is the Hair of the '90s.
For the majority of us who won't be seeing Rent anytime soon, the Original Cast Recording is more than just an after-show souvenir. Well-packaged with a complete libretto, the two-CD set is a worthwhile album separate of live performance. Full of songs that are funny and catchy, inspiring and touching, smart and hip and not overly sentimental, Rent mixes showtune pop with elements of rock, R&B, dance, gospel, and tango to make one of the best albums of the year--certainly the best rock opera in decades. La vie bohème, indeed. --Roni Sarig

I was the first in line when the movie came out and had a heartfelt emotional experience. And now it has finally happened...
I just saw the show for the first time on April 28th, 2007 and may I say GO SEE IT! The songs have not lost any relevance in the last 11 years. The cast of the tour is great and I hope one day to see the original cast perform.
Thank you Jonathan Larson! God speed and I love you :-)

Amazing.......2007-01-12
I have always thought that the comparations between "Rent" and "Hair" are totally unfair. In "Rent" we have a full cast with real and meaningful people without the false truths and lies that were around in the late 1960. Jonathan Larson is the Balzac of Generation X.

I have never really been a big fan of Staind, however I have loved certain songs of theirs here and there, but I am an overall Alternative rock fan. So I came across this album and it had all the greats that I really liked plus a few I like from others in acoustic versions so I got it. Wow, this is one compilation that will be tough for Staind to ever overcome! I would say the absolute best album they have ever compiled! This rarely comes out of my CD player!

This decade-spanning compilation charts the singer-dancer-actress's transformation from rebellious teenager to sexy diva, along the way check-listing major hits like "Nasty," "Miss You Much," "What Have You Done for Me Lately?" and "Rhythm Nation." Two new tracks bookend the set, but even the older material--most of it helmed by writer-producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis--holds up remarkably well. --Courtney KempCustomer Reviews:

Janet is a legend!.......2007-01-27
Regardless, that doesn't take away from the fantastic music. It starts off with "Runaway" which is a classic Janet 'holiday' song in the vein of 'Escapade". The camera'click sound on each beat is very catchy and unique.
The next few tracks are from Janet's 1986 breakthrough "Control": "What Have you Done for me Lately", "Nasty" and "When I Think Of You". All classic singles that have the most seductive dance beats and attitude that makes Janet who she is.
It continues with four tracks from "Rhythm Nation 1814": "Escapade", "Miss You Much", "Love Will Never Do...", and "Alright" They all have futuristic, yet 80's pop beat to them which is the tone for the RN1814 album. Of course, they'll all extremely catchy. "Alight" appears in it's radio remix form, which is a nice little treat.
The album continues with two more "Control" tracks: The amazing "Control", and "The Pleasure Principle". Jimmy, Terry and Janet did great job on these. They are R&B classics that sound even better today. Next are "Black Cat" and "Rhythm Nation. The former is also in radio remix form which is a nice luxury. "Rhythm Nation" is basically the same as it's album verison, with the excusion of Janet's 'pledge speech' at the beginning.
The last four songs are slow jams, each from a different album. "That's the Way Lvoe Goes" from 'janet.' is J's biggest hit, and with good reason. The beat is so sexy, as are Janet's vocals. The groove is absolutely blissful. Next is "Come Back to Me" (RN1814), a fantastic soothing R&B ballad that sounds ahead of it's time. "Let's Wait A while" is Janet's first hit ballad (from "Control"), and it's a very sweet song about waiting to have sex. Last but not least is anoher new track "Twenty Foreplay" which starts off as a sweet slow ballad, and then changes it's tone to a straight-up funky, love-making jam.
All-in-all,this CD demonstrates what an amazing talent Janet Jackson is, and what pleasure it is to have her as part of he music industry.
Missing a couple of good ones, but still an affordable and mostly well-chosen overview.......2006-11-26

Pop pundits might contend that a Poison greatest-hits collection should be an EP. Yet despite jeers from critics, these glam-metal pretty boys produced big hits, filled arenas, and fueled MTV in the late '80s. And the opening track on this 18-cut compilation sets the record straight: "Nothing but a Good Time," indeed. From down 'n' dirty rockers such as "Talk Dirty to Me," "Look What the Cat Dragged In," and "I Want Action," to mega-ballads "Something to Believe In" and "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," this is a treat for those who like big hair and bigger hooks. Included are two previously unreleased songs, "Sexual Thing" and "Lay Your Body Down," the latter a lush, likable five-minute power ballad. One complaint: the song-by-song notes by singer Bret Michaels somewhat lack the pizzazz one anticipates from a band with such a colorful comportment. --Katherine TurmanCustomer Reviews:

On the other side of the coin, Poison showed their softer side with "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" and the surprisingly deep "Something To Believe In."
In addition to being a good representation of who this group is, the liner notes are excellent, as well. Overall, this is one for the collection. The 80's probably would not have been the same without this group and the songs that we all should come to know and love.

"Chicago's plot was cynical and satirical in 1975, but today feels like a documentary." So says Walter Bobbie, the director responsible for this revival of the Kander, Ebb, and Fosse "musical vaudeville," which began as a minimalist concert staging for New York City Center's Encore! series before moving on to Broadway, critical acclaim, and Tony Awards. Actually, it'd be hard to go wrong with any production, no matter how it's staged, because the Roaring '20s jazz-based music here is simply great. Some people actually prefer the original's Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera as Roxie and Velma to Ann Reinking and Bebe Neuwirth, but no matter. Joel Grey is perfect as Amos Hart, James Naughton matches Jerry Orbach's original Billy Flynn, and again, the music here is wonderful. A near-flawless classic. --Bill HoldshipCustomer Reviews:

Like the movie itself, the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack is filled with emotional twists; from the hardness of Garbage's "#1 Crush" and the Butthole Surfers' "Whatever" to Stina Nordenstam's endearing, whispery "Little Star" the journey is all over the map. Within the CD-enhanced grooves, however, moments of absolute brilliance flow; Des'ree's "Kissing You (Love Theme from Romeo + Juliet)" is perhaps her strongest work to date, while Radiohead's "Talk Show Host" is a track that the group treasures and performs live often. Those two tracks alone make this soundtrack worth the purchase price. --Denise SheppardCustomer Reviews:

This commemorative reissue of music from 2001: A Space Odyssey combines the Also sprach Zarathustra theme, various Johann and Richard Strauss segments, and a ballet suite by Aram Khachaturian--all of which prove how much Stanley Kubrick's film attempts to avoid the soundtrack clichés of most science-fiction movies. Instead of the expected sci-fi effects, there is a more ironic application of music that would be otherwise incongruous to the celestial settings. Here, "The Blue Danube" complements scenes involving weightlessness and descending spacecraft, while Gyorgy Ligeti's creepy "monolith" music connotes Armageddon more than interplanetary exploration. The tracks play as they had appeared on the original soundtrack release back in the '60s, but there is also previously unreleased supplemental material and a dialogue montage entitled "HAL 9000." --Joseph LanzaCustomer Reviews:

Jason Robert Brown, one of musical theater's brightest young composers, made his first New York splash in 1995 with Songs for a New World at the WPA Theatre. It's a revue of 16 of his cabaret and theater songs, directed by Daisy Prince (Hal's daughter) and realized by a crack cast of Andrea Burns, Jessica Molaskey, Brooks Ashmanskas, and Ty Taylor (who sang the role on this recording only because cast member Billy Porter had a contractual conflict), with Brown himself leading a small combo from the piano. Soaring melodies and irresistible rhythms mark a wide range of songs that encompass jazz ("Just One Step"), gospel ("The River Won't Flow"), funk ("Steam Train"), and Kurt Weill ("Surabaya Santa," sort of Mrs. Claus's lament as it would be sung by Lotte Lenya). Most memorable are two songs of lost love: the Ashmanskas-Burns duet "I'd Give It All for You," which perfectly captures romantic yearning, and Molaskey's wry yet poignant "Stars and the Moon," which has become something of a jazzy standard, recorded by such luminaries as Audra McDonald and Betty Buckley. Brown went on to win the 1999 Best Score Tony for his powerful Parade, then reunited with Prince on The Last 5 Years. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:
Songs for A New World - A truely magnificant musical that soars!.......2007-05-13
Songs For A New World first showed off-Broadway in 1995. Jason Robert Brown delivered what is now one of muscial theaters hidden treasurs.
Any true musical theater fan who is tired of the new lack luster shows or revival after revival clustering their shelfs will find this cd a new favorite.
Ironically, all these songs have been selected from differnt shows written by Jason Robert Brown, yet have a noticeable connection. Even Jason Robert Brown wrote, "No one tried to weave these songs together. Yet when the show was completed we couldn't help but notice how many of these characters and songs could be portrayed as the same individual."
For myself, each and every song can be a personel favorite. But of coarse certain numbers clearly rise above the rest.
The New World- Truely one of my favorite songs of all times, from the lyrics, the vocals and the message.
Just One Step - A hilarious and briliant song. You will be humming this hugely catching the first moment you hear it.
Stars and the Moon - A haunting and truely significant song. Any theater fan will appriciate this song for its soluful lyrics and heart warming message.
King of the World - Quite simply, one of the most brilliant vocal performances you will ever hear.
Each actor gives each and every song meaning and heart. And when all four are put together (The New World, The River Won't Flow, Hear My Song) produce awesome results.
This is a MUST HAVE for muscial theater fans who miss shows you can actually listen through entirely! I highly recommend this to be added to your collection!

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, the first Broadway show for which Stephen Sondheim wrote both music and lyrics, has proven to be one of the master's most enduring creations, appearing in community theaters and, in 1996, in this full-scale Broadway revival. In the role of the scheming slave Pseudolous, Tony-winner Nathan Lane isn't the maelstorm that was Zero Mostel in the 1962 original Broadway cast, giving a subtler, neurotic performance. While one might miss the sheer force of Mostel's personality driving these madcap antics (based on the Roman comedies of Plautus), Lane's approach allows the show to become more of an ensemble vehicle. In a gender- and race-neutral move, Lane was subsequently replaced on Broadway by Whoopi Goldberg. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

2) I played Hysterium in my high school play (Greenwich, CT: Brunswick - '01), and I had so much fun, and the CD helped immensley, as I heard several versions of the songs, and this one just rocked
3) N. Lane's voice is very strong, but can sound whiney at times. I don't know...I'm not getting money for this, so what do I know?!

Music in Good 'Forum'.......2000-05-27
Saks and his team have turned in a fun album of a show that sometimes needs to be seen (Coutesans, Marcus Lycus) to be appreciated. Great attention was paid to sound effects which helps the listening audience understand the action that more than likely was happening on the stage at a particular momnet. And that, my friends, is the mark of a good musical theatre recording.
Much has been said about the individual performances, all of which are clear, well sung, and spoken. However, to say they are good performers is to take away from the real genius here. To make this musical work (and I've done it a couple of times) one has to find a complete cast of talented character actors. Romeo, Maria, Hamlet, and Barbara please sit down and make way for the circus fare. Saks has found his faux with the likes of Lane, Sabella, and Linn-Baker.
At times the orchestrations drag on and the quality of the actual recording could be better if you have an audiophile ear. But for the most part this is a must have for the musical theatre person.

Simply Incredible.......2006-09-11
By looking at these CDs you most probably have watched the movie and liked the music in it, which in my humble opinion was incredible.
So which one to buy then?
The answer is the following one:
If you are looking for more mainstream music, R&B, rock etc. than you should go for the first CD.
If on the other hand, you are looking for an orchestrated music etc., than go for the second CD.
To conclude: If you have watched the movie, the R&B/rock music is mostly found in the first CD (Volume 1) while the slow ballads and orchestras are mostly found in the second CD (Volume 2).
I hope that I could help you ^_^
Possible geniuses?.......2006-06-26
While Star Wars wills always be the score that all others will be measured up to, the genius of Baz and Nellee will help to change the face of this.
Helped by the fact that even if one did not see this version of the film, since most know the story, one can follow all the twists and turns in the plot solely by listening to this CD.
How they have changed the face of scores forever is by incorporating different musical generals (hip hop #3, pop #10, rock #13, and techno #21) which given the scene we heard them in in the film, not only are appropriate, but adds another dimension to the film which draws you in even more.
What is even more remarkable is that this was produced in 1996, prior to the rap/rock mixture and before it looked like techno was poised to become the next big thing.
Genius is not only doing something very well, genius is also doing something that has very rarely been done before; and Luhrman and Hooper showed with volume 2 that the term genius could be applied to them.
