The bluegrass bandwagon continues to roll in 2001. This collection attempts to capitalize on the breakthrough success of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. Drawn from Rounder's rich catalog, the 19-cut sampler of female singing, fiddling, and picking extends from an era when women were a novelty in this male-dominated music category through the popular crossover ascendance of such contemporary artists (and O Brother favorites) as Alison Krauss and the Cox Family. Harmonies from the likes of Rhonda Vincent and the Stevens sisters soar toward the heavens, while the earthier strains of Hazel Dickens and Ginny Hawker are more reflective of the music's hardscrabble roots. Though Wilma Lee Cooper's "You Tried to Ruin My Name" has all the subtlety of a hog-calling contest, such rawness is about as real as this music gets. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

Lacks the Cohesion of her Brother.......2003-10-12
Don't get me wrong - I like many of the songs included here, but they don't always blend together in the best way.
I haven't yet heard a superb compliation collection of female bluegrass artistes, but if you want to hear an excellent and cohesive collection of Rounder artists, buy the 2-CD "Hand Picked: 25 Years of Bluegrass".
wow.......2003-09-27
Phony Bluegrass.......2003-03-29
My impression is that they failed with rock or whaterver. Music such as O'Sister will destroy real Bluegrass. The CD that I purchased went to the garbage can where it belongs!!

A Good Collection Of Some Great Female Singers.......2006-06-04
Beautiful: I'm not a big fan of Christina but this song changed my view of this dance/pop singer.
Intuition: Jewel is truly one of the most amazing singers in the world. This isn't my favorte. 2 Become 1 would fit better.
I'm Like A Bird: This is Nelly's best song and one of my favorites on here. It's well-written and upbeat.
Are You Happy Now?: I LOVE Michelle Branch. This is her best hard core break up song. It's really rockin'.
Thank You: This is a beautiful ballad and I never get tired of it.
Overall, this is great and worth the money.

Great C.D. Full Of Truly Talented Women!.......2005-07-18
1) Christina Aguilera- Beautiful (4/5)
Good- sounding song, the lyrics are great but I personally don't like Aguilera too much. She sings these female- empowered songs and then at times is not exactly the best role model for women. Makes no sense to me.
2) Faith Hill- Cry (5/5)
I consider this the best Faith Hill song and I know many will disagree, but I know many others will agree. This song is strong and very moving. I love it.
3) Jewel- Intuition (4/5)
Well many hate Jewel these days because of this new sound of hers, especially her original fans that were there for her when she merely sung with her guitar. Yet I guess she likes herself in this pop/ dance mode now and she doesn't really sound too bad either way. She has better songs than Intuition though, such as Standing Still, which should have been the song they put on here instead of this one. Still an enjoyable song nonetheless.
4) Nelly Furtado- I'm Like A Bird (5/5)
Amazing song, the lyrics I can very much relate to. Nelly isn't very much spoken of anymore, I assume her other c.d. didn't sell too well, or maybe she herself is plagued with the one hit wonder spell, and Like A Bird was just too big for any of her other songs to top. I don't know, but this is indeed a great song. I've always loved it.
5) Kelly Clarkson- Low (5/5)
One of Kelly's best songs, very catchy and her vocals are shown strongly in this song. Being the first American Idol she had definitely needed to prove herself on her first album and she did, including this smoking hit. Her second c.d. that I own holds a lot of songs that sound like this one, and so her second c.d. can sound a tad dull at times, but has a few smoking hits as well.
6) Alicia Keys- A Woman's Worth (1/5)
I can understand why they placed Keys on here, for she is widely praised, but honestly I never liked Key's music. There are so many other women behind a piano that I believe produce better songs. I think mainly though I just am turned off by her sound, I don't like it too much at all. And her lyrics are a tad cliche. But I know a bunch of others will love her on here, just not me. Personally, if it was my choice, I would have put Vanessa Carlton in the number six slot instead- to me, Vanessa Carlton is an amazing pianist and vocalist.
7) Dido- Thank You (4/5)
Great song, but not Dido's best. I love how she has a different sound and I have both of her albums so I know that she has a lot more powerful songs. Yet Dido is a smart choice to have on here for she is one of the best female vocalists out there.
Michelle Branch- Are You Happy Now? (5/5)
Yes I am happy now with this song! Lol. Michelle Branch has always been one of those female musicians that turned your head. Plainly at first called a girl with a guitar, she proved she is talented beyond her years, producing hit after hit, including this one from her second c.d. I heard she is no longer going solo anymore though, but will be singing with another woman. That's a shame, but who knows maybe it will be a good combination. This is a good rememberance though of the power Michelle held in her solo years.
9) Alanis Morisette- Thank U (10/5)
What I consider the best song on here and the real reason I bought this c.d. in the first place. Alanis has been a true mark on the musical world for women, and has inspired so many women to belt out their frustration to the audiences, and I couldn't be more of a fan her than I am. This is one of Alanis' best songs ever. Everyone loves Alanis angry, and now she has made an album where she has calmed down a tad, so now she is no longer under the spotlight too much, but I say she still sounds great. Great choice for this c.d. is this song definitely.
10) Sarah Mclachlan- Adia (4/5)
I am not a major fan of Sarah Mclachlan, I just never got into her too much, but Adia is a very plesant song to hear from her. She is obviously talented, and that is why she has such a strong cult following. I think this was a good choice to have on here.
11) LeAnn Rimes- How Do I Live (4/5)
A good song as well. I used to love hearing this song, the lyrics are sweet, almost to the point of sickeningly though. LeAnn though is another talented female artist and this is a widely popular song.
12)Cher- Believe (5/5)
I've always loved Cher's Believe song. It's probably more of the sound in the song but it's very catchy and upbeat. Cher has been around a long time but she deserves recognition, she worked probably as hard as any other female singer to get her title over the years.
13) Lisa Marie Presley- Lights Out (1/5)
Another female singer that I assume has a strong cult following but to me is not the best female singer out there. I can think of a few other female singers that could have filled her position I feel that are a lot better for the position, but it's not my choice. I never liked Lisa's music too much, nor this song.
14) Bonnie Raitt- I Can't Make You Love Me (3/5)
Eh...not too bad of a song, kind of nice, but nothing powerful. LeAnn Rimes has a better ballad on here. I don't know too much of Bonnie for her style of music is usually not on my radio stations, but this song isn't too bad, not very memorable though.
15) Cherie- I'm Ready (4/5)
Very upbeat song by Cherie, a girl once dubbed a young Celine Dion. Although I don't exactly agree with that, Cherie does have some vocals on her worth recognition. Instead of this song though I think they should have put Older Than My Years on here, a song that shows more strongly Cherie's vocals. But still a nice song to hear.
16) Natalie Merchant- Kind and Gernerous (5/5)
You know I remember hearing this song a long while ago and hardly paid attention to it, although I did find it catchy. Now I hear it on this c.d. and I just love it and can't believe I didn't love it sooner. I've known of Natalie for awhile but didn't give her chance. After hearing this song though, I am going to check out more of her stuff for she sounds like a very talented woman and her voice is like Dido's, different, but actually a breath of fresh air to the music world. I am glad they put this song on here great choice.
17) Rachael Yamagata- Under My Skin (4/5)
Rachael I just started to know with her single Worn Me Down, and that was a catchy song, and another reason I bought this c.d. was to hear another one of her songs. This song did get under my skin, for it is indeed catchy, in ways even more catchy than Worn Me Down. I'm glad they put this one on the c.d. too.
18) Heather Headley- I Wish I Wasn't (1/5)
This song sounds a lot like a bunch of other songs I hear on the radio everyday so no I don't like it. And the female's voice is nothing to specialize, it's an average voice. This whole song is a dime a dozen. I could think of so many others songs to have put on here instead of this one.
Toni Braxton- Un- Break My Heart (4/5)
I've always loved this song, this woman's voice is a lot more stronger and worth hearing. Toni Braxton is a woman singer worth recognition, and this song too is very popular and very moving. Good choice.

Amazon.com essential recording
Before these 1960s recordings were made, the impact of women on bluegrass was virtually non-existent. Molly O'Day and Wilma Lee Cooper had forged some success, but Hazel and Alice were more interested in the dual harmonies of the Stanley Brothers. The pair's unrefined, passionate, seamlessly intertwined harmonies leave a lasting impression, and their sound often owes more to traditional country than bluegrass. Supported by mandolinist David Grisman and fiddle legend Chubby Wise, the pair attack the songs of Bill Monroe, the Carter Family, the Stanleys, Delmores, and Louvins with fire and conviction. Dickens originals such as "Won't You Come and Sing for Me," with four-part harmonies, and the playful "Cowboy Jim" display her deft songwriting touch while her raw mountain tenor rivals that of Ralph Stanley. --Marc GreilsamerAlbum Description
When Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard recorded these songs in the mid-1960s, bluegrass music was dominated by male performers. They selected their favorite songs and arranged them for a stellar group of sidemenbluegrass legends Lamar Grier, Chubby Wise, David Grisman, and Billy Baker. Their widely admired performances made them role models for future generations of women in bluegrass. The 26 tracks have been remastered, resequenced, and newly annotated by the performers themselves. Includes Long Black Veil, The One I Love Is Gone, and I Hear a Sweet Voice Calling. "Hazel and Alice blast out vintage bluegrass-country soundsongs with fierce, raucous energy." -Time MagazineCustomer Reviews:
Essential bluegrass album; the real stuff.......2007-03-07
Hazel Dickens is a national treasure. This is an absolutely wonderful CD and a must-have for anyone who even thinks they might like bluegrass. No prissy singing here: These women both have beautiful, strong, voices. The songs are great, the harmonies are great, the instrumentation is great (first-class accompanists and arrangements).
This isn't a great "women's bluegrass album", it's one of the great bluegrass albums, period.

One of the best albums of all time.......2003-10-12
If I had to recommend just one album to anyone, it would be this one.
Hazel Dickens has the most purely emotional singing voice I've ever heard, even better than Judy Garland or Edith Piaf. Her range can quickly go from utterly raw to softly sweet.
I have specified in my will that a song from this album be played at my memorial service.

You can say one thing about Amy Rigby: Whether cowering in the dreads of despair or rejoicing in newly sprung reverie, she's the same clever, cynical and exceedingly straightforward songwriter we have come to appreciate since her 1996 solo debut, Diary of a Mod Housewife. On record number five, the 40-something New Yorker once again turns life's observations, both humdrum and vital, into tightly wound, three-minute pop diaries. In "Like Rasputin," Rigby staggers to her feet from the evil man just in time to grapple with "The Trouble With Jeanie," her new husband's peach of an ex-wife. As usual, she finds levity in any situation, and this time she fanaticizes about "Dancing With Joey Ramone," calls out the absurdities of "Needy Men" and explains how the woman in "The Year of the Fling" was "running fast from the past (and) hell bent on having a blast." Like any great author, Rigby is content enough in her craft to expose the imperfections as comfortably as the triumphs. And as with any great songwriter, she always manages to pull it off. --Scott HolterAlbum Description
Renowned songwriter Amy Rigby's fifth album finds the singer, who began her solo career as the Mod Housewife, bringing it all back home. Hailed for her keen eye and sharp wit in tracing the vagaries and victories of modern romance, her new release finds Rigby promising "I Don't Want To Talk About Love No More." But, of course, she does - getting to the heart of the matter and the punch line in due course.Customer Reviews:

Rolling Stone Magazine Review.......2005-09-01
Billboard Magazine Review
On the first track of singer/songwriter Amy Rigby's fifth album, the one-time "mod housewife" wittily compares herself to czarist Russia's most infamous and rakish character. Odd entrance? Seemingly so, but the sly humor and infectious melody of "Like Rasputin" demands repeat spins. The rest of the 12-song package is equally rewarding, whether Rigby is questioning why her new husband's ex-wife has become a friend ("The Trouble With Jeanie"), dreaming of punk dancing with Joey Ramone or brilliantly tapping into the psychedelic sonics of "Revolver"-era Beatles ("So You Know Now"). Rigby's raw-rockin' delivery and fed-up-with-cheap-crap themes are most prominent, yet she also plays it jaunty on "Needy Men," Roche-like folky with the harmony-rich "Girls Got It Bad" and nostalgic on "Always With Me." Recorded in two days in New York with guitarist Jon Graboff as co-producer, "Little Fugitive" is one of the best pop/rock albums of the year. -Dan Ouellette

"The Definitive Recording".......2004-04-02
The voices of the London Cast are, to a man (and woman) far superior -- this is most obvious when listening to the Quartet who open the show, and act as the chorus. The American artists, while excellent, simply can't compare to the power, range and tone of the Brits.
The arrangements are gorgeous, the choral work astounding, and the version of "The Miller's Son" found here will floor you. Not only the best recording of this particular show, but possibly the best recording of any Sondheim show available on CD -- Sweeney Todd is the only other contender, for my money.
The Orginal Cast Recording is great for a historical value. The British Cast is what you listen to when you want to hear the best show you'll never have the privilege of seeing. It's ruined me. But I'm not complaining.
Sondheim's Greatest.......2003-07-10
Having said that, I conclude that the perfect cast album could only be completed with the physical presences of Desiree Armfelt and Fredrik Egerman and the rest of the gang. It seems that, when approaching these personalities, actors and actresses treat the music as the music and not as a phase of the dialogue--they don't attack the parts with the brand of boldness and self-importance that each of these characters possesses. The London cast album suffers from such problems. None of the performers have the arrogant voices needed (unfortunately, only a couple have achieved voices somewhat-worthy of the score). Henrik cannot hit the high notes (he goes into falsetto); Charlotte is too shaky to be sufficiently biting; Fredrik seems too feminine; the Count--goofy instead of condescending--seems molded from Sesame Street. The quintet features voices too uneducated and careful. Still, Anne is cutely bubbly (even in voice), Petra is a fine belter, and Hermione Gingold as Mme. Armfelt really makes the listener savor every consonant in her speech. It is an excellent archive of Sondheim's greatest. I would recommend this over the New York cast simply because Jean Simmons creates the closest Desiree I could ever imagine.
Not comparable to the broadway recording.......2002-09-03
A wonderful CD release.......2002-02-15
A few of my favorite songs on this album is the wonderfully light and fast paced, elegant little romp of "A Weekend In The Country," and "The Glamorous Life" (which has always been my favorite song from the production, with a much better Fredricka then the origianl).
In conclusion, this recording should certainly be bought by "A Little Night Music" fans, and especially Stephen Sondheim,in the words of another reviewer, who's lyrics are the real star,
a beautiful recording.......2001-12-19
Ms Simmons is quite affecting as the flighty and insecure Desiree who feels she is ready to pursue romance after years of broken promises and false hopes.
Gingold, now qute comfortable and honed in her role; performs the comical and contemplative "Liasons" wonderfully.
Stephen Sondheim's most complex and multi-faceted score is given a grand treatment here. Almost certainly this is Sondheim's most interesting and most beguiling score which runs the entire gamut of emotions.
A must for all true musical theater fans.
