Album Description

Girl Talk's second album."Unstoppable, for all its sweaty beats and sexy grooves, paints a picture of Gillis that's just as much mad scientist as oversexed party animal. Gillis' manic experiments bring life to inanimate rhythms and swap the personalities of unwitting samples in harebrained schemes to make bottoms shake and fists pump." -DUSTED

I'm a huge Girl Talk fan and own everything he has put out. This record is my favorite. It is glitchier than Night Ripper and far poppier than Secret Diary. If you like Night Ripper, it is a pretty safe bet you will like this.

5 out of 5 stars Punk Angst In Overdrive! .......2005-04-23

Irreverent. Ingenious. Funny. Cathartic. For best effect, pump up the volume - with the headphones on, of course. Highly recommended for middle aged types who are desperately trying to cope with existential angst while reminiscing the Golden Age (1985-1995). PS: A bit of "empirical advice", shall we say. Do not drive while listening to this CD in your car...especially the track "A Sheltered Life".

5 out of 5 stars A fine retrospective.......2002-05-04

During their decade of existence, Carter USM were consistently one of the best acts in the UK indie scene, both live and on record. One memorable review described their music as "The Clash meets the Pet Shop Boys", which seems fairly accurate if a bit too simplistic.

Dismissed in the US as either a novelty act or as "too English", Carter (James Robert Morrison, a.k.a. "Jim Bob" and Les "Fruit Bat" Carter) nevertheless made outstanding music full of energy and wit and compassion and righteous indignation at the state of mankind. Although they officially split a few years back, they still come up with the occasional collaboration under the name Who's The Daddy Now? as well as their individual projects, Jim's Super Stereoworld and Abdoujaparov, respectively.

This compilation is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant..........2001-04-17

this is the first carter cd i have owned after hearing their music from friends... they should have gotten more media play in the united states because they are a very catchy mix of punk and new wave... anytime, anyplace, anywhere reminds me of the petshopboys vaguely... but it's really a lovely starter for the novice carter fan... i recommend it in a heartbeat...

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Curiously Uncompelling New Album is Redeemed by Great Bonus Disc.......2005-09-27

Recently I've been listening to Peter Himmelman's entire recorded output quite closely. I wanted to create my own "Best Of" collection and needed to get more familiar with his last two albums, "Unstoppable Forces" from 2004, and "Imperfect World" from 2005. Ultimately, after listening to each about 5-6 times, I concluded that Unstoppable Forces is one of Himmelman's weakest efforts, while Imperfect World is a strong candidate for his best ever.

I've always been partial to Himmelman's more rockin' songs, while finding his acoustic singer/songwriterly efforts somewhat hit & miss. His quieter material often seems overly serious and even humorless, very odd for a guy who, as anyone that has ever seem him in concert will attest, is extremely funny. Unstoppable Forces is tilted towards Himmelman the acoustic troubadour, so for that reason alone I don't like it as much as his harder rocking albums. But in addition, even the rock songs on this album are curiously uncompelling. So all in all the album is a bit of a disappointment.

Fortunately, the package is redeemed by the inclusion of a bonus disc - "Himmelvaults Volume 3". A collection of previously unreleased recordings from various points spanning his career, Vaults 3 comes across as a complete, high quality album in it's own right. Songs like "Long Time Coming Back", "The Bond", and "Don't Believe A Word" are so strong it's hard to fathom how they didn't end up included with the albums they were originally recorded for. It's a far stronger collection than 1998's Himmelvaults Vol 1. (I haven't yet heard Himmelvaults Vol 2.)

Overall 4 stars. Unstoppable Forces gets 2.5 stars. Vaults Vol 3 gets 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars HYMN TO HIMMELMAN.......2004-03-11

It's great to hear Peter Himmelman again on CD after traipsing to Colorado or some other place to hear his music live. Keeping his musical integrity intact, Himmelman continues to be a great "lyrical poet". Although I'm certain creating TV music for "Judging Amy" and other shows may be more lucrative, for we Himmel-folks, his recordings are more fulfilling. This CD is a wonderful re-entry into the recording stratosphere, and I hope the first of many more.

    5 out of 5 stars Himmelman Unstoppable.......2004-03-05

It's been far too long since Himmelman's last offering "Love Thinketh No Evil" not counting his children's CD "My Fabulous Plum"(2000) which saw little distribution, "Unstoppable Forces" is a magnificant return to form. I'm assuming that most folks have already been aquainted with his recording history, encompassing 89's magical "Synesthesia", 1991's masterful "From Strength to Strength" with, perhaps, some of the best songwritting the 90's offered up in the singer/songwriter category,(Impermanent Things,Love of Midnight and Phone Call from Chicago are 3 of 15 examples from STS).

Beside being Bob Dylan's son-in-law, Himmelman is a masterful storyteller, bringing to mind Elvis Costello, moments of Graham
Parker at his best and bits and pieces of Joe Jackson.

Himmelman said "goodbye" to major label representation with the much misunderstood "Skin" in 1994 that went right over the heads of most MOR radio playlists who but all shut the door on creative
possibilities in music during the 90's, marching toward corporate
cookie cutter musical images now fed to the general public at large. Keeping his faithful following intact, Himmelman began his journey in keeping intact the long line of musical tradtion that he embeded in the main frame of his recorded work.

"Unstoppable Forces" is one tight, melodic odyssey, with moments
conjugating the spirit of FSTS and "Flown This Acid World".
Immediate standouts are the opening acoustic track "The Deepest Part" with Peter assuring the listener that the strength and value that remains are the things that never change, guiding one along their journey, whatever it may be or what road traveled.
"So Many Little Lies" kicks things up a few notches with its rock root firmly established in that long line of tradtion that makes Dylan, Costello, Parker and many others masters of their craft.
Thus far the one track that has me hitting the repeat button after each play through is "Love That Lasts" with it's refraining course of "You know it's love that lasts, It's love that lasts, when the idols all come down its love that lasts" with Himmelman singing with such convincing fervor it leaves one convienced he's been witness to an end times scenario.

"Red Like Jupiter" is full of vision and tales of the heart, perhaps written in memory of Peter's sister who passed away this past year, while "Discipline of Rain" is, simply put, a beautiful rewarding acoustic journey in search of balance and appreciation of beauty, while "Death of Dreams" has "classic" written all over it's melody. Yes indeed, 12 wonderful, embued musical tracks with 2 bonus tracks at the end.

"Unstoppable Forces" also contains a very rewarding bonus disc from Himmelmans own personal vaults, an onging series that he's offered on his web sight for the past few years with every track a strong contender that should have been included on major releases.

For those who might not know of Peter Himmelman's musical
presence or who have heard but not tasted, I can think of no better starting point to get aquainted. For those already
    versed in all things Himmelman,
it's a welcome return to form and beauty. Welcome back Peter, we've missed you..............................beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back Peter!!!.......2004-02-20

I have heard a rumour that Peter's old band from the early 80's (SUSSMAN LAWRENCE) is getting a 2CD collection on Deep Shag Records sometime this year. Let us hope! Unstoppable Forces is simply a brilliant piece of work and long overdue. Please don't make us wait so long next time.

    4 out of 5 stars Americana with Brit-pop roots.......2007-03-31

Minibar continues to straddle their UK origins and adopted California home. On this third CD the balance continues to tilt towards roots-rock, with the oft-mentioned Wallflowers and Wilco still being relevent comparisons; the Wallflowers' Rami Jaffee even turns up on Hammond organ for a pair of tracks. But even with their twangy guitars and rasp-and-whisper vocals providing a blend of rock, country, and soul, there's still an underpinning of Brit power-pop in the dense melodies and harmonies. The latter is highlighted on "Wide Open," thick with vocals and guitars reminiscent of Teenage Fanclub.

After a major label release for Universal and an indie on Foodchain, the band has issued this one on their own, distributing it through CD Baby and at their shows (including an upcoming tour backing Pete Yorn). The opening "Things I Left Behind" catalogs the abandoned jetsam of the indie experience in a travelogue of lost clothes, bandmates, LPs and experiences strewn through the years. On the flipside, "Can I Call You A Cab?" lingers over the physical and emotional remains of a relationship, pondering how to move on. The dissolute closer, "In the Strings," mulls the same quandary, but with a sense that 'goodbye' is the only answer.

The band's rhythm battery has the bouncy snap of a well-honed pop band, but with enough swing to give it soul. Simon Petty's voice defines the band's sound, with a rasp that sits perfectly among (rather than on top of) the band's mix of acoustic and electric guitars. Minibar may have missed the broad commercial window for their brand of rock (although Americana radio should eat this up), but those who love beautifully produced pop with twangy edges should check this one out. 3-3/4 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. 5 out of 5 stars A Collection of Excellent B-Sides.......2000-06-19

The marvellous Carter were one of the seminal British bands of the 90s, combining lyrics that were creative, vitriolic and witty, excellent punk riffs and flawless synthesized drum beats.

In this collection, the manic duo Jim Bob and Fruibat have gathered together B-Sides from such singles as 'Sherriff Fatman' (an attack on corrupt landlords), 'Bloodsport For All' (about abuse in the armed forces) and 'Lenny and Terrence' (a comment on the pop composings of Lenny Kravitz and Terence Trent d'Arby), yet never does the quality of the collection show any dip from first-rate work. Indeed, most of the songs on this CD would, in my opinion, warrant single releases of their own. The songs range in content and style from the huge assault on the royal family, 'Stuff the Jubilee', in which Carter are their wise-cracking, angered best, to the sentimental 'Always The Bridemaid, Never The Bride' in which the bands softer side is revealed.

While, of course, the album would be a pointless purchase for those who already have all the singles, such those new to the Carter USM experience would surely benefit from having this in their collection.

It makes you wonder how the Spice Girls ever became succesful, never mind famous...
