Stronger Than Pride - 4.5 stars.......2006-06-24
The songs just flow into each other so seamlessly that it is one of the discs that I can listen to from start to finish - the only song that kept me from giving it a full 5 is the last track - I like the music production but not the song as a whole.
My favorite tracks are: KEEP LOOKING - love this song, always encourages me to look to the positive side of life and not to let things get me down; LOVE IS STRONGER THAN PRIDE - love the spare beauty of her voice with the very low key music; NOTHING CAN COME BETWEEN US - very catchy; CLEAN HEART - again, the spare production of this song is perfection; PARADISE & NEVER THOUGHT I'D SEE THE DAY.
For those who are trying to build a Sade collection, I'd recommend this disc - the strong songs and excellent music production will have you reaching for this disc over & over again.
Stronger than Pride..........2005-11-23
Three stars!!
I love this album like, like an Italian.......2005-10-19
The other sensation this album evokes, also a hallmark of the Sade sound, is melancholy. Haunt Me, Keep Looking, I Never Thought I'd See the Day, and many of the other songs (save for the tropical and romantic Paradise) have a somewhat lonely, sad undertone. It reminds me of Eddie Murphy's comments in the movie "Boomerang." He tells Halle Berry that he is having the kind of sad day where he just wants to go home, stare at the wall, and listen to Sade. I'm sure he listened to Love is Stronger Than Pride quite a few times that day.
There are, however, two songs that stand out for me.
Love is Stronger Than Pride is almost a hymn. After the betrayal of a lover, Sade is opening her heart again, admitting that though she's not good at forgiving she may give her lover another chance because, after all, love is stronger than pride. And since this song seems to be a hymn to forgiveness, it always makes me think of "A Course In Miracles," the spiritual book that says we find peace through forgiveness. Love is Stronger Than Pride came into my life back in 1997 when I first found "A Course In Miracles." They seemed to be perfect companions. Love is Stronger Than Pride was my theme song for a car trip I took with my friend, Mary Jean, back in 1997. We visited Multnomah Falls and Bridge of the Gods, on the Columbia River Gorge outside of Portland. The mist of the falls seemed a metaphor for the mist of forgiveness.
But the song that haunts me most is Clean Heart. At first, it comes across as a suave mid-tempo R&B song. Sade's delicate voice is little more than a whisper, almost drowned out by the rhythm section. It's the kind of breezy song you can't help but snap your fingers to. I couldn't understand the lyrics, which was fine because they seemed inconsequential, but from the gentle melody and sunny, laidback atmosphere, I figured it was a simple love song. Perhaps a predecessor to Cherish the Day.
After a few listens, I decided to take a look at the lyric sheet. My intuition, however, told me that doing so might be against better judgment. It seems that every time I think a song is light and fluffy, I later find a darker meaning. Once again, my intuition proved correct. The lyric sheet reveals that Clean Heart is actually about a man involved in a life of crime, in an attempt to escape a life of poverty.
"He straightened his belt, and with a lover's touch, he said I'm gonna bring home the things that are out of your clutch."
But the line that really gets me choked up, the line that haunts me, is, "He loved his daddy, though he never told him. And how he loved his mother. He loved, he loved her like, like an Italian."

This album however does nothing to advance him as a songwriter.
Many of the tracks here, while played with blistering passion, lack hooks or grooves and so seem to meld into each other with none really standing out. Yes, there are the trademark harmonic squeals, blazing solo's and bone crunching riffs, but the songs themselves lack any sort of hook that would keep me listening. Unlike Zakk's superb craftsmanship on his collaboration with Ozzy's songs, this album just "Bored me to Death"

A collection of great instrumentals.......2006-08-10
The entire album is instrumental, so we miss out on Anderson's outstanding lyric writing talents.
Ian trades his lyrics in for some of the finest flute music you will ever want to hear.
There is not a bad song on the CD. The highlights for me include, In a Stone Circle, In the Grips of Stronger Stuff, and in defence of Faiths. These 3 compositions are not only outstanding but will stand the test of time, which in my mind is the only true test of music. You will never hear Ian Anderson compose anything more solid. The rest of the CD is basically elevator music with occasional highlights.
Ian plays the flute in his patented style and is in top form.
This is much better than its predecessor Walk into Light.
If you are a Jethro Tull fan this should interest you.
Less Than Divine.......2006-07-28
Having said that, I am disappointed with his Twelve Dances with God. The music is pretty, in a generic way, but it lacks the compositional intricacy that is the hallmark of Anderson's work. There are few, if any, key modulations, which Anderson does so well in other works. The pieces are all instrumental - flute together with orchestral instruments and the occasional keyboard. They are all pleasant, in a "new age" sort of way, but lacking musical substance. Nice background music for the office or at home, perhaps.
My chief disappointment is that all twelve pieces sound monotonously similar. I assumed that the theme of this album is the diversity of expressions as humans attempt to dance with God. Leaving the theological aspects aside (this is, after all, an album of music not a theological text), I would have expected a greater diversity of rhythm and tune. However, each track seems to flow into the next. Perhaps this is reflective of "new age spirituality" where truth and deity are rather elastic, but that would take some elucidation from Ian Anderson himself. The music itself doesn't seem to have much to say. If these are twelve dances with God, perhaps it would be better to let Him take the lead.
completely satisfied..........2004-08-09
As mentioned in earlier reviews on this page, this is a true gem and a tribute to Ians ability to be musically creative, fluid and expansive in a musical genre distinctly different from his rock and blues roots.

Every song on this album is a banger worthy of radio play, but I do love Multiple a lot, on this track he singing about how many times he can make his girl cum. I also like the track he did with Babyface, What I Like About You, that song is a throwback R&B joint that just sound great. Patience and AZ U are tracks also I seem to enjoy with great lyrics and awesome beats.
The guest appearances are on point R.I.P ODB (Dirt McGirt) and 2Pac.
Regardless of Jon B lack of promotion, Stronger Everyday is worth purchasing and should have been multi-platinum. I hope he keeps blessing his fans with more much needed music!

She re-invents herself again, but sticks to what she can do best:
Touching the listener!
From the opener "Stronger than before" Olivia moves on with "Under the skin", a song that every woman having a breast removed can relate to.
"Pass it on" is one of the most positive songs, ever! Olivia's daughter Chloé Rose contributes the track "Can I trust your arms", which Olivia does perform during her recent NZ/OZ/J-Tour!
The Bossa-Nova version of "Don't stop believin'" is as good as her re-doing of "Physical (2002) and far better than the over-production of "I honestly love you"(1998).
"Serenity" is a prayer which will be adopted by meditation-fans all over the world. This is an inspirational album for all difficulty-survivors on earth!! Thanks Olivia!

Oh Dear..........2007-04-19

Stronger Than Before Is Indeed Stronger Than Before!.......2006-04-24
I've always thought that John Farrar wrote these lyrics from "Don't Stop Believin'" about Olivia herself: "Your smile can open any door...You never chase your dreams/They find you." While other icons of pop-music stardom (such as Barbra Streisand) may have mouthpieces which are richer and more textured, Olivia Newton-John's purity and sweetness, in voice and personality alike, always made for a conquering, charismatic compound. One reviewer surmised he couldn't even tell you whether Olivia is a good singer. Her voice seemed to come wrapped up in so many other good qualities that you don't even notice. At her career peak, Olivia may have been a tad irritating to some in her enthusiastic cheerleading, but in more recent times her positive outlook has been strongly tested: professional lull, marriage breakup, breast cancer, disappearance of boyfriend. She emerges as a woman who is timelessly beautiful and very spirit-centered yet also one who has earned her stripes and endured suffering.
This dichotomy is well-reflected on STRONGER THAN BEFORE, a CD which blends Olivia's classic clearness with a newfound maturity and control. She is balanced and believable. This project of inspirational songs designed especially for people dealing with cancer or in other difficult situations is a most suitable outlet for Newton-John's clarity and calm. Whereas her previous outing, INDIGO: WOMEN OF SONG, had a few memorable moments, STRONGER THAN BEFORE is indeed stronger than before--across the board! INDIGO lost a little credibility whenever Newton-John strained a little too hard for torch-song toughness or wanted to duplicate a cover too nostalgically. "Loving You" lacked sexiness, "Send in the Clowns" needed more emotional wavering.
With spiritual enlightenment and recovery as the main themes, STRONGER THAN BEFORE utilizes material closest to Olivia Newton-John's heart at the same time it stretches her vocal acumen. The title jaunt, pleasant and pristine, is an anthem of continual self-discovery amid patches of rough water: "I've survived so many things/From broken hearts to shattered dreams/In every wall I found an open door." "When You Believe," a logical follow-up, centers on the power of numbers in healing and on Olivia's own apparent metamorphasis from good-girl next-door to a composed woman in her own right: "She knows how far I've come/How hard I've tried." On "Phenomenal Woman"--with uplifting lyrics by Dr. Maya Angelou--Olivia is joined by other legendary divas such as Patti LaBelle, and the result is a sensuous, proud and dignifying celebration of womanhood wherein LaBelle delivers passionate, primal screams of devotion and Olivia's diplomacy is well-grounded: "Now you understand just why my head's now bowed/I don't shout or jump about or have to talk real loud." And Olivia beomes even quieter when reciting "real loud."
"Under the Skin," dealing with virtual reality and transformation, is at once spiritual and surreal and deeply affecting: "Don't believe the mirror/'Cause mirrors sometimes lie." And it seems that here is a woman who has a love and acceptance of self great enough to pour outward into the lives of others who are affected by cancer surgery. The uptempo attempt, "Pass It On," borders on being sickly sweet but still manages to stay more or less on this side of the line. "That's All I Know for Sure," meanwhile, is a cute ditty about the memorable messages of life's circling journey (although this one could have used another verse, it ends abruptly). "When I Needed You" is an enjoyable supernatural odyssey wherein Olivia sounds ethereal yet earnest in her mission. It is a tad disappointing, however, that she hits none of her trademark stratospheric high notes at the end as this dreamy piece lends itself so well to it (there is only mechanical whistling). Yes, her notes may be lower, but even the new samba version of "Physical" from a few years back let her peal off a couple somewhere in orbit.
"Can I Trust Your Arms" is in contrast poignant and pointed. A haunting bass accompanies an urgent piano and an edgy, emotional vocal. This is one of my favorites of the set. It is searing and realistic in its pained portrait of the many conflicted levels of cancer confrontation--where do you go, what do you do, whom can you trust--and possibly more moving in the aftermath of her boyfriend Patrick's mysterious disappearance. The new version of "Don't Stop Believin'" is still charming but the bossa nova styling doesn't really work well with the lyrics (the original can't be topped, it seems). "Serenity," as updated and outlined by Amy Sky, is a stirring prayer and affirmation brought to twilight-esque actuality via Olivia's aura-like articulation.
Chong Lim's production values are honorable. He emphasizes Newton-John's uncorrupted vocalization and yet does not sentimentalize her sweetness either through overdone arrangements. This CD really captures the feelings of a tumultuous journey with all its euphoric highs and uncertain downs, and it certainly is Olivia's most impressive undertaking of the last decade. Highly recommended--especially as a gift for someone who is going through a very hard time.
Lucky Break for our Olivia!.......2006-04-18
I had no idea Olivia was being given another chance to release her recordings. Happily, and despite her poorly recieved previous album of cover tunes, she's returned again with a brief selection of self-help, "inpirational" tunes. These types of recordings, while not really artistic, fill a needed slot in the world of music. Troubled minds often are unable to concentrate on reading material, and may be unresponsive to mental therapy sessions. But music appeals to almost everyone, and perhaps the mentally ill might respond favorably to these kinds of songs, finding within the lyrics (and within themselves) a few simple threads of hope and logic from which they may begin to mend the shattered pieces of their minds and become productive citizens again.
Olivia is in fine voice, for some of the tracks. There's nothing here that would demand the razor-sharp prowess of a lyrical interpretation by Eartha Kitt...no gut-wrenching torch screamer that only Liza Minnelli could perform. No...instead, we have here a few simple songs that are suited for Olivia's voice, at this time in her very lengthy career and she does, at times, sound shockingly youthful.
I give my high reccomendation for this CD, perhaps not for listening to in your home, but it might make a wonderful gift for a dear friend with a deep seated problem. My instincts tell me that someone's life could be saved, or at least tempoarily sustained, by the recording we discuss today!
Olivia back with songs with a heart.......2006-04-17
Well, you'd be wrong as this release is one of her best albums for years. Closest in feel to her 1998 Back With A Heart CD (not a surprise since at least a couple of the songs seem to be culled from it's sessions), the collection is almost up there with the best of her mid-70's work.
There are some really strong ballads here. The title track and When You Believe (which almost segue into each other) are truly lovely and her voice is as refreshingly gorgeous as it was in her hey day. Similarly, Serenity and Under The Skin are first class and really quite affecting. A co-write with her daughter, Chloe Lattanzi, Can I Trust Your Arms, despite the duff title, is one of the best tracks here. A simple piano led melody with a flawless vocal from Olivia.
A remake of her 1976 hit, Don't Stop Believin' is another highlight. Now, given how much I loathed the 'samba' version of Physical from her (2) album, I was dubious, to say the least, about this one. But, my fears were groundless as this version works in conjunction with the original adding something special to the song in the process.
Pass It On, the only upbeat song here, is a rousing number and has a catchy melody, but the production is awful and Olivia becomes lost in the mix long before the end. It has to be said that vocally, Pass It On is quite beyond Olivia, her silly squawks amd gruff shouting being no substitute for a powerful voice.
That's All I Know For Sure, along with Phenomenal Woman are the worst songs here. The former, a drab, tuneless reject from the aforementioned BWAH sessions, really lets the album down, and the 'insirational' latter, is a formless mess. Without a decent melody. When I Needed You is a little better, having a new age vibe and a pretty melody, but the lyric is clumsy and well, just plain bad.
And that's your lot. If ONJ produced albums like this for the rest of her life, I wouldn't mind at all. Given her baffling career missteps over the years, this is the second album in a row that she's got it pretty much right. So there is hope!
The sleeve artwork screams 'cheapo charity album' at the top of it's lungs featuring one grainy photo from the shoot for Olivia's last album, Indigo.
Stronger Than Before may be riddled with cliches and doesn't contain that special song that will spark a renewed interest in Olivia, but for fans of the artiste, it's a really good album and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

If one were to read the liner notes before taking a listen, it would be possible to get the impression that Kristine W's Stronger is something a bit beyond the what the Pamela-Lee-meets-Britney-Spears images of the singer seem to promise. Claiming saxophone duty on a few tracks and cowriting credit on the majority of them, Ms. W seems perhaps poised to push the dance-pop envelope. She doesn't. From the opening track's dirty synth throb to the honeyed delivery of less-than-revolutionary lyrics ("all that glitters is not gold," "when you need a little shelter, you can run into these arms of mine"), and from the whooshes and zings to the requisite build-ups and break-downs, one gets the feeling that we've been here quite a few times before. This in itself is perhaps not a problem. Fans of sweet and peppy club-diva shenanigans could very well eat this stuff up, on especially the slightly gutsier latter half of the record. Anyone else is apt to go into sugar-shock after a few tracks. --Bob MichaelsCustomer Reviews:

Burgess Proves "Stronger" With Sophomore CD.......2006-01-17
Though all of these songs are fairly new compositions, they sound like they have weathered the passage of time with the copacetic timbre that only the classics possessed. And a look at the album's liner notes conspicuously reveals why: with songs coming from song writers such as Paul Overstreet, Chris Waters Dunn, Aaron Barker, John Jarrard, Buck Moore and Leslie Satcher, it's no wonder why this is such a classy CD. What is more even remarkable is that these maestros have enough faith to entrust their work of art to a relatively newcomer in Sonny Burgess. Burgess, a Cleburne Texas native, has a pretty sturdy tenor packed with personality and he's particularly effective vocally in the ballad department. Produced by Jeff Teague, "Stronger" has all the hallmarks of a contemporary country CD leaning heavily to the more bucolic executed by Nashville's most sought after session players such as Lonnie Wilson, Rob Hajacos, Brent Mason and Larry Franklin.
Telling the story of how country music has brought the protagonist through the various stages of life, "Redneck Lullabies" is a gorgeously written ballad has an added humane dimension that comes across as bona fide and treacly. Less heart rendering, but still quite affecting is Aaron Barker and Ron Harbin's traditional cry-in-your-beer weeper "A Little Stronger." Drawing parallelisms between the bartender and Jesus, of whom most would call upon in malady, Leslie Satcher and Larry Cordle's "Jesus and Bartenders" is lyrically engaging told over a ¾ balladry pace. While Paul Overstreet and Mickey Gates' "Anytime I'm Smiling" adds levity to the album's sober demeanor. With titling bounce and its hooky chorus, "Anytime I'm Smiling" is a reminiscent of Overstreet's more famous composition "Forever and Ever, Amen."
Another stand out is the album closer, the jazzy "You Touched Me." Composed by Danny Steagall and Peggy Newman, this ballad's drawing power resides in its simplicity as well as Burgess' cordial delivery. Though country music has a venerable tradition in its share of "dog" songs, "The More I'm Around People, The More I Like My Dog" reaches its nadir with its bigoted lyrics that even the canine population would be embarrassed by it. Despite being quite a stellar album, a couple other tracks like "Living on Nine" and "When You're in Love with a Woman" veers around the mediocre.
Though released on an independent label with Burgess given the carte blanche, this album stands toe to toe with many major label products out there. And with many of today's artists who greedily indulge in their own second-rate compositions, Burgess' wisdom in drawing from the best of Nashville's writers gives him a leg up over many of his peers. This man deserves stardom and with songs this good, he deserves to light up all radio lines.
He's real Texas country!.......2005-11-17
