Starlite Lounge

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
South Carolinian David Ball found his musical calling in the rickety wooden dance halls of Texas. There he discovered the pleasures of getting crowds to shuffle their cowboy boots to drawling honky-tonk tales of love gone wrong; he also learned that by cranking up the electric guitar and the snare drum, one can get the younger country dancers who hang out at converted suburban discos to shuffle to the same songs. That recipe made Ball's Thinkin' Problem one of the best albums of 1994, and it's a formula he uses successfully again on Starlite Lounge. The cover silhouettes Ball against the mirror ball from one of those revamped discos, but the vocals inside sound like Ray Price and Lefty Frizzell. Ball and frequent cowriter Tommy Polk collaborate on nearly half the songs here, displaying their knack for bemoaning a dim romantic situation in a lyric and contradicting it in a melody's resilient, upbeat attitude. --Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars fine record........1999-10-11

Very nice piece of record here. David Ball is something of a treasure. Bought a copy of this on the street in Fuzhou, China. It had obviously been impounded then re-sold by the police; got it for a dollar. Authentic country honky tonk; quite a bit like Garth Brooks but a bit more Nashville with some songs. Thanks David, xie xie for the memories of home, partner.

5 out of 5 stars Best cd i've listened to in years...........2006-09-15

since I heard too much woman by the same artist. Too bad this doesn't seem like it will be released here in america. we need more like this. Thank you Bridgette Mcwilliams!!!

5 out of 5 stars star........2006-08-01

since her debut in 1994, brigette (mcwilliams) has stood out as a truly original class act, much in the vein of regina belle, miki howard, vesta williams and ambersunshower. fans of adriana evans will particularly enjoy this album, with its cool jazz and latin jazz stylings. brigette definitely has the vocal chops to pursue more mainstream success, but by staying true to her artistic vision, she gives the musical community a great gift--authentic, original, creative, intelligent, beautiful music. one can't help but to think that, if ella and sarah were still around, this is the kind of music they'd be listening to and performing. let's just hope that, this time, audiences heed the advice of brigette's debut album's title and take advantage of this amazingly talented artist.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-10-25

I must admit that I have only listened to two songs from this album, but they were incredible. "Is this love" might be one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Great for late nights with that special someone. I truly cant believe the talent this artist has. My copy is on the way.....
