Product Description
A trio of noted Australian musicians--Iva Davies, Richard Tognetti and Christopher Gordon--composed the film's score. They previously collaborated on "The Ghost of Time," a piece commissioned for the Millennium celebrations in Sydney, which came to the attention of Peter Weir. The director was so impressed, he played the piece on the Master And Commander set throughout production, and he asked its creators to write the music for his movie. The score interweaves "Old World" and "New World" music, reflecting the talents and backgrounds of its composers. Iva Davies hails from both pop and classical traditions; Richard Tognetti, one of the world's great violin virtuosos, taught Russell Crowe the ins and outs of the instrument; and film/television composer Christopher Gordon brought orchestral texture to the project. Given the period, it comes as no surprise that the score is infused with source music from Bach (Cello Suite) and Mozart, among other great classical composers. Percussion dominates portions of the score. "Drums signal the forward movement of the ship," says Davies, "that it's on a mission. It brings you back into the action." The score's biggest surprise comes with its use of synthesizers. "Peter doesn't make films in the expected way," says Davies, "and for that reason we wanted the score to be not what everyone expected. Peter wanted some scenes to have what I call a kind of 'futuristic' sense"--conveying the idea that these 19th century sailors were cutting-edge explorers.Customer Reviews:

Good incidental music but not great listening music - except the classical pieces.......2006-11-09
The second type of music is much more enjoyable to listen to. Those that have seen the film know there are several scenes in which people are playing music - for example, Aubrey and Maturin in the captain's cabin performing a cello-violin duet, or the sailors on deck playing sea shanties on tin whistles. The pieces chosen for the film range from Bach to traditional folk music, and are a welcome addition to the soundtrack. The performances are very good (including a cello solo by Yo Yo Ma), and the recording quality is excellent. Deserving special mention is the Boccherini piece (La Musica Notturna Delle Strada di Madrid), which serves as a second unofficial theme song for the movie. The piece itself is presented in its entirety, and there is a callback to the piece in the incidental music as well, which is a welcome ray of levity in an otherwise oppressive piece.
People purchasing this disc run the real risk of being disappointed - the incidental music works so well in the context of the film that you are likely to think (as I did) that the music is itself worth listening to alone. Unfortunately, I don't find this is the case, but the classical music that is included makes this a soundtrack worth having, especially for the Boccherini piece.
Great classical music accompanies bland original score.......2006-09-27

As comfortable as guitarist Lee Ritenour has always been in the smooth jazz format, he has strived to go beyond it with his embrace of world music and serious jazz stylists including Wes Montgomery. Smoke 'N' Mirrors is a characteristic production in gathering up a sizable cast of contemporary cronies including Patrice Rushen, Dave Grusin, Richard Bona and Abraham Laboriel, but Ritenour's involvement in South African and Brazilian music and his emphasis on acoustic guitar give it a fresh identity. The wistful "Blue Days (Dias Azuis)," written and arranged by Daniel Jobim, son of Antonio Carlos, and featuring the singer Joyce, is one of the album's highlights. The young South African vocalist Zamajobe, featured on three songs, is a real discovery. You may wish Ritenour had stayed on ethnic turf and saved the more familiar, keyboard-sweetened fare for another album. Or you may enjoy the variety of Smoke 'N' Mirrors, which ranges percussively from Sheila E.'s congas to Satnam Ramgotra's Indian tablas. --Lloyd SachsCustomer Reviews:

SUPERB.......2007-01-11
Why someone called Heaven, Hell or Houston their worse song. NO WAY! Heaven, Hell or Houston and Manic Mechanic are both in the same vein and are 2 of my favorite tunes by the band. Of course the single best song ever has to be Waitin/Jesus Just Left.
All in all, I am very happy to have the proper remastering of these songs. The six pack was a complete joke. Now ZZ Top needs to release a live album that can stand the test of time. I believe they are capable of making a (Seger)Live Bullet or (Cheap Trick)Live at Budakon or (U.F.O.)Strangers In The Night.
Rock on my little ol' band from Tejas!
Intelligent song selection.......2006-08-26
The song selections are right on the money. For Tres Hombres and Fandango, for instance, the best songs were chosen and the lemons were left off of this compilation. One could quibble about including more from the First Album, but then choices had to be made. In general, every song on this compilation is enjoyable. A 5 or 6 CD set could easily have been released but this is an excellent sampling.
A couple of the other reviewers gave incorrect information which I'd like to correct. The version of Legs is the exact same version, down to the second, as appeared on their album Eliminator--it was not cut-off during a guitar solo as one reviewer erroneously stated. Also, another reviewer said that this compilation uses the "disco mix" releases of the early albums. The reviewer is wrong. This set uses a remastering of the original album releases, not the bogus rerecorded versions.
Chewy Goodness.......2006-06-28
If you like the Top, this is a worthwhile investment. I've nearly worn it out.
Love this Box Set !.......2006-06-17
All I know is that overall ( minus a few tracks covered by other reviewers ) this is some really fine music covering a 20 year period . Billy Gibbons while maybe not the fastest or most flashy guitarist around says a hell of a lot more with fewer notes than most with his awe inspiring tone and soulful playing.Get this set and enjoy !
ZZ TOP for those that only know the hits!.......2006-01-07

After two close-but-no-cigar efforts for the now-defunct Decca label, Smoke Rings in the Dark marks Gary Allan's emergence as a major talent. The album was coproduced by MCA Nashville honchos Tony Brown and Mark Wright, who between them have been responsible for dozens of No. 1 country hits in the '90s. Thanks to shrewd song selections, Allan's sound bridges the gap between the contemporary Nashville mainstream and West Coast alt-country with style and integrity. With its haunting Roy Orbison-style refrain, the title track is among the most immediately memorable singles to penetrate country playlists in 1999. The ballads "Bourbon Borderline" and "Greenfields" recall labelmate Mark Chesnutt, whose traditionalist leanings Allan clearly shares. At the same time, he's not averse to slinking and strutting through the zoot-suit swinger "Sorry" and howling a faithful cover of Del Shannon's "Runaway." Smoke Rings should make Allan a bona fide star; it's already established him as a bona fide artist. --Rick MitchellCustomer Reviews:

Most posthumous albums are shrouded in a sense of morbid nostalgia and grim curiosity. In Sublime's case, there was also some cruel irony to contend with: the California nuevo-punk outfit's promising self-titled major-label debut and commercial breakout was released barely a month after frontman Brad Nowell's death from a heroin overdose--and their de facto demise. But such was the Long Beach band's longtime following that raiding the vaults, however sparse, was inevitable. Released 18 months after Nowell's death, Second Hand Smoke more than lived up to its title, cobbling together a collection of outtakes from their debut and padding them out with (sometimes multiple) remixes of old tracks like "Doin' Time," "April 29," and the Gwen Stefani duet, "Saw Red." There's a standout cover of Bob Marley's "Trenchtown Rock," but a lot of the rest feels like the incomplete discards and second (or third) choices they obviously were. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
Is there any song that sums up the late '70s music scene like 'Smoke from a Distant Fire'? It had the blue-eyed soul crossed with high-gloss L.A. production sound of the Doobie Brothers, Kenny Loggins and other superstars of the era, with the kind of hook only real pros could create. For, as is often the case with so-called "one-hit wonders," Ed Sanford and John Townsend had spent years in the music business before hitting it big with this album. Indeed, the sound of this record was no accident; the duo had worked with both Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins (who repays the favor with a great vocal on 'Oriental Gate') before cutting this 1977 release. And talk about music biz connectionsthe album was produced by the great Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett! So, it's no surprise this one is a hot item for '70s pop collectorsa 'Collectors' Choice Music' exclusive!Customer Reviews:

A Classic........2007-05-09
"Smoke From A Distant Fire" is one of a few dozen tunes that instantly, for those of us in our late 30s/early 40s, takes you back to the great days of AM gold. And, the good part, it's not the only catchy, likeable tune on the record.
In a time when almost anything seems to qualify as "a classic", this duo and these tunes really are.

Even better than I remember.......2006-10-17
Great to hear it again........2005-10-06
The only thing better than this was the demo that got them their record deal. The demo, which featured these songs played by Loggins & Messina's band and recorded by their production team is so much better than this admittedly hit-bound recording, it's sick. The grooves are slinkier, Townsend doesn't sound so stiff and ready for radio. The whole demo has this organic southern smile on it that is truly amazing. Why Warner's re-recorded it is a mystery. Maybe the guys can get the rights to their demo tracks and release them on CD. Hell, it's only been 30 years. Now that would be something to buy!
Still "Smoke" is a tremendous record. None of the later records came close.

The Reverend rocks like a man who's been brought up properly in the Rockabilly tradition. He'll have you playing air guitar and before you know it, you're dancing around like a concert madman and then trying to explain to the wife that it was a pretend Stratocaster that she saw you holding and thrusting in front of your hips.
This is good old fashioned bang yer fingers on the dashboard, jam the accelerator, punkamunkahunkabilly rock and roll. I bet George Thorogood wishes he could play his riffs half as fast and with as much feeling.
