Live Recordings from the Louisiana Hayride [Live]

Until this release, the oldest--and virtually the only--live George Jones on record was a 1965 concert released on import in 1987. So these 16 songs, recorded on the popular Hayride radio broadcast between 1956 and 1969, are talismanic for Possum fans. Does it matter that the actual recording quality is predictably atrocious, with Jones's acoustic guitar mixed way above the other musicians (some of whom you sometimes can't hear at all)? Or that while the early tracks are full of spirit, the later ones tend to peter out, perhaps paralleling the rise of his celebrated drinking excesses? (Big exception: the oft-overlooked "Say It's Not You," from 1968). No, definitely not to the true fan, who will rightly welcome any opportunity to hear his inimitable style being shaped over time. Others, though, might not be so enthusiastic. --John Morthland

4 out of 5 stars Long-winded MC intros hurt this CD!.......2006-08-02

I agree with others that this music and Johnny Horton is great on this CD and when you first hear it you really get the atmosphere of these historic radio transcripts. But all the long-winded intros by the MCs and Homer and Jethro, etc. really hurt repeat listenings and slow things down when you only want to hear Johnny's songs. I ripped my CD and edited out everything except the songs themselves and when Johnny introduces his own songs, and the result was amazing! - kind of like "The Concert Johnny Horton Never Gave". What a hootnanny! This is the way I listen to this album, and I listen to it often. Perhaps in hindsight the manufacturers should have made the intros and songs into seperate tracks so it would be easier for the average person to rip just the songs to their iPod or whatever. Great performances by Johnny Horton and decent sound quality, nevertheless.

5 out of 5 stars The Best CD I ever heard!.......2006-06-10

This CD proves that Johnny Horton was one of the best singers and entertainers there ever was,and his exuberence and the audience reaction are like nothing I have ever seen or heard in my lifetime. It has me saying "I'm Wild about Johnny Horton!" He was the very best!

5 out of 5 stars Memorable '50s stage performances.......2004-06-24

Scena's latest volume shines a welcome light across the final five years of The Singing Fisherman's life. Beginning with 1956's "Honky Tonk Man" (his first chart success) and running through the historical songs with which he etched his lasting memory, Horton's performances seamlessly fuse folk's storytelling with honky-tonk's twang and rockabilly's drive. Horton is revealed as a masterful, driving performer who could hold an audience with a knowing pause, or rev them up with a driving beat and spirited vocal.

Horton's performances of "Honky Tonk Man" and the follow-up, "One Woman Man," combine the honky-tonk delivery of Hank Williams with the propulsive beat of rockabilly. His cover of Williams' "Jambalaya" is very much his own, as are revved up readings of "John Henry" and "My Bucket's Got a Hole In It." Horton's second wind of chart smashes is fully represented, including spirited performances of "Johnny Reb," "Battle of New Orleans," "When It's Springtime in Alaska" and "Sink the Bismarck." His mastery of folk singing turns these from novelties into showpieces.

Those familiar with Horton's work will treasure the opportunity to hear his songs amplified by an adoring crowd; those who only know the hits will be amazed by Horton's one-of-a-kind folk-rockabilly-country fusion. This may be the best disc yet in what's becoming one of the industry's brightest archival series.

5 out of 5 stars Lively hardcore country from the 1950s.......2004-04-27

This set of archival recording captures late-'Fifties honkytonker Johnny Horton at the height of his powers, playing on the KWKH Louisiana Hayride program, which once competed with The Grand Ole Opry for preeminence among the live hillbilly radio shows... Horton was one of the Hayride's biggest draws, a fiery good ole boy whose delivery was just inches away from the rockabilly sound of the times, and this disc gives a great sense of his style and charisma, as well as what his live repertoire was like. There are rollicking versions of his big hits -- "Honky Tonk Man," "Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor," "Battle Of New Orleans," etc. -- as well as amped-up versions of folk tunes like "John Henry" and "Rock Island Line." The between-song banter and emcee introductions also give a glimpse into the was live performances felt on the Hayride stage... Fine sound quality, too! Horton fans, or honkytonk aficionados alike should get a real kick out of this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Still Laughing after 5 days, THANKS TO JUNE!.......2006-07-31

June Carter fans, get ready to buckle your seatbelts and blast off into a 1960 show of Louisiana Hayride, starring the Beautiful JUNE CARTER!!!!!!!!! I put this CD in the first day I bought it. I was up laughing until 2 AM! June has once again done an outstanding job.

These segments from the "Louisian Hayride" TV/Radio show feel as if your really at the show. June is hilarious (as usual) and includes some really funny jokes into her high-pitched, bouncy, energetic songs.

If your a new fan, this is a perfect way to get to know June's comedy. It'll bring a smile to your face, and it has some really great songs. If your an old fan, June has once again outdone herself.

So what are ya waitin' for, fellers? Buy this CD today and experience it for yourself!

Love,
June

5 out of 5 stars June was a jem.......2006-03-28

I just bought this cd in Nashville and I haven't stopped listening to it since. Listening to June tell her "famous poems" is a real treat. The songs are good and June is funny. Each time she is introduced the audience goes crazy for her. After I listened to this cd, I can see why. This is a good item for long time fans or new fans (thanks to Walk the Line.) This was money well spent.

4 out of 5 stars Rare spin of Carter's early stage work.......2003-11-27

This is a truly fascinating look at June Carter's early-60s stage act, including both familiar songs and comedy routines that many listeners have probably never heard. In addition A.P. Carter songbook standards, "Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow" and "Wildwood Flower," Carter shows off her original corn-pone humor and quick wit.

She shows tremendous command of the comedy stage, lampooning the lyrics of Marty Robbins' "Big Iron," reciting a humorous poem about Elvis, and tossing off frenetic asides and barbs. But much like Buck Owens, when she swings from comedy into song, she's riveting, as are the top-notch pickers with whom she's surrounded. Supported by a full band, with electric guitars and pedal steel, these recordings are fuller than the parallel Hayride volume recently issued on Johnny Cash.

A pair of tracks from 1961, highlighting a "Stars of the Opry" show at the Hayride, features Carter singing and joking with the Wilburn Brothers. But when they swing into A.P. Carter's "Worried Man Blues," the Kingston Trio's then-recent hit simply disappears in their wake. A 1962 appearance yields Carter's rapping version of "The Heel," and a 1965 visit is highlighted by her duet with Johnny Cash on "It Ain't Me, Babe," and her backup singing on Cash's Sun-era "Ballad of a Teenage Queen."

Sound quality isn't state-of-the-art, but it's clear, and Carter and the band are nicely isolated - no doubt reproduced from transcription records of the original KWKH broadcasts. The tracks are framed by Carter's stage patter and comedy, along with applause and cheering. It gives you a good sense of how much the audience loved Carter's combination of song and shtick. This is a rare glimpse of Carter standing tall on her own, unsupported by either the Carter Family or Johnny Cash. These recordings are a great find on both a beloved artist and the legendary show for which she performed.

5 out of 5 stars It's Country Music History.......2003-10-27

it's corny, and the music isn't great. But if you love June Carter you will want this CD. It has a way of making you feel you are there at the hayride show. What more can I say, it is history, history of one of the greats. Get it and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Nobody Better.......2005-06-09

Of several George Jones live recordings, this is my favorite. Jones is in great voice throughout, despite a couple of surprises from his band, which actually (through several versions beginning in the 50's) is pretty tight. It is interesting to note the evolution of Jones' voice through these appearances on the Hayride. Although these are all songs he's recorded more than once, the subtle variations in his interpretations make this CD worth having for even casual Jones fans. I've collected and listened to lots of country over the years and to me Jones is the best country singer and one of the best of any genre. Now for a desperate sincere plea, however -- Jones is woefully under-represented on CD, and now that the Red Sox have won, my next greatest hope and wish is that Bear Family (or whoever might be able to do as good a job, is there anyone else?) will anthologize Jones in the way he deserves to be. There is a huge trove of great Jones songs on Starday, Mercury, Musicor, UA etc which have never been released on CD. Way way overdue.

5 out of 5 stars A 'Must-Have' For Jones Fans.......2005-01-13

I wouldn't recommend this as an intro to the Possum's work, but for knowledgeable Jones fans, it's a must-have. Hearing the evolution of the deeper, distinct Jones sound is something the true fan will fully appreciate. My favorite is Walk Through This World, but like others have said, all of them past track No. 10 or so suggest the giant voice that is to emerge!

5 out of 5 stars An Honest Treasure.......2004-09-03

This CD is an honest Treasure! Featuring George in his very early recording years, to 1969 as a seasoned Country Performer! On this CD you will hear how George has developed his style, the standard which performers are judged today! These live radio recordings are part of history, the history of the man known to be the Greatest Country Singer! As a George Jones fan, I am very glad I bought this CD! Give it a listen and you will be too!

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful CD!!.......2004-03-10

i want to tell all of you to try and ignore the callous review of John Morthland, who has always been overly critical of nearly everything issued on George. He used to be a music critic for a magazine called "Country Music" and i've read his reviews over the years and so i'm not being mean, just honest. well, i'm listening to the CD as i write this review and i simply can't hear anything remotely close to "atrocious", as Morthland indicates. i can hear the guitar, fiddle, and the other instruments in the style George performed in back then and if THAT'S what Morthland calls atrocious then we all know he hates bare-bones production. some songs contain an intro by whoever was hosting the show in a given week. George talks, too, and you can tell he's a little drunk but that's old news, nothing surprising there. i also realize that these recordings are 45 to 50 years old and i'll allow for any bad spots but there isn't any that'll distract you too much! "Don't Stop the Music" is perhaps the song that'll seem disappointing because of it's low playback. this CD is a MAJOR treasure for anyone seeking out Jones in his primitive years and throughout the late '60s. the audiences are wild and appreciative, as expected. tracks 1 through 9 are from the '50s. with track 10 onward, George starts to sound the way everyone knows him to sound. He introduces the band and his voice and stage patter makes you think of today...it's the same but only the band-members have changed! Unbelievable! Like George Strait, the motto for Jones must be "if it ain't broke don't fix it" when it comes to his concerts and mannerisms. "Things Have Gone to Pieces" turns into a near laugh-riot as the drummer slams on the drums when Jones sings "somebody threw a baseball through my window..." and it messes him up and he starts laughing. all in all a good CD. i give it 5 stars because it's great as a whole, with only the slightest rough spots {as earlier mentioned, "Don't Stop the Music"}.
