Composer Tim Janis has long straddled the line between contemporary instrumental and classical music. With An American Composer in Concert, he further blurs that line. The first nine tracks of this disc were recorded by the Tim Janis Ensemble in the composer's studio. They're short, majestic, and relaxing instrumentals named after nature themes ("Cape Elizabeth," "The Fallen Leaves of Autumn," "Pacific Wind"). Things pick up slightly during the 10 live tracks that make up the second half of this disc. Recorded at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center with the American Symphony Orchestra, these tracks feature luxuriant strings, the occasional pennywhistle solo, and one vocal track (a take on "Amazing Grace" with sweeping orchestrations). As with most Janis efforts, there's nothing groundbreaking here, just soothing music and pleasant melodies. --Jason Verlinde

It is just so soothing. I've had the opporturnity to see him in person (sort of) on QVC shopping channel. I can just see his face as he places along with the rest of the group. He looks so peaceful and serene. And that is how I feel listening to his music.

Splendid Live Performance from Modern Composer Tim Janis.......2003-04-24

Tim Janis's latest CD is split into two sections; the first 9 tracks feature new works, and the latter 10 tracks are taken from his live performance at the Lincoln Centre (USA) earlier in 2001.

The new tracks are a little repetitive in sound, but there is some quality music within them. Where the CD really takes off, however, is in the live section, which features renditions of his favourite pieces ably supported by the American Symphony Orchestra. Stand-out tracks include "Twin Lights", "Water's Edge" and my favourite of all, "Amazing Grace", featuring the powerful voice of Gwendolyn Leathers supported by some fabulous orchestration.

"White Mountain" deserves a mention of its own for its sheer excellence and beauty. Stunning penny-whistle playing!

These live tracks are taken from Janis's previous releases, including the excellent "Water's Edge" and the now unavailable "Flowers in October".

At over 70 minutes in length, you get a lot of music for your money.

If you enjoy melodic, soothing instrumental music played by a symphony orchestra, this CD may well be the one for you.

Very good but not excellent.......2002-11-22

When I first heard Tim Janis on our local PBS station, I was memerized by his music so I had to get the CD. I'm glad I did but I have to admit when a friend pointed out that all his songs pretty much sounded the same, I had to agree. Maybe as he gets older there will be some more variety, I hope so. He's a very talented young man.

An outstanding CD that leaves you wanting more.......2002-03-15

"An American Composer in Concert" is another outstanding CD from Tim Janis. The lush mixture of ensemble and orchestral songs truly transport you to a better place emotionally and mentally. Tim Janis composes the music I've been waiting my whole life to hear, though I didn't know it until I heard it. I'm much more at peace with nature and myself after listening to his music. On this CD, "Blue Hill Bay" is probably my favorite of all Tim Janis' songs, but all the songs on this CD (with the possible exception of a vocal rendition of "Amazing Grace" that doesn't seem to belong) are great. If you haven't heard Tim Janis' music, you owe it to yourself to get this one and listen to it. Since I've found his music grows on people, I guarantee if you listen to your CD 5 times, you'll be hooked like I am and explore his other CD's as well. Enjoy!!

Incredible music from an incredible evening..........2001-11-23

I LOVE the music of Tim Janis and this CD is a truly wonderful CD. This CD has georgeous live tracks and extra bonus tracks to make it completely full of breathtaking melodies...I would truly recommend it to anyone who wants to have some beautiful music around the house!

Brilliant and missed.......2004-09-25

I took lessons from Warren over twenty years ago and to date
I have heard no guitarist that matches his musical talent. This
CD is a great sampling of his talent. I miss you Warren.

If you play jazz guitar this is a MUST.......2003-09-15

Warren was one of those hidden masters of the guitar, who shedding the limelight, turned his talents to teaching.
He not only could teach, he could PLAY! His understanding of how the guitar works, was awesome. The influence of Classical music and his native Hawaii, shows up in his compostions on this CD. And his astounding facility on the guitar bursts forward with amazing clarity as he rips through doubletime passages with the greatest of ease. This CD is orders of magnitude below what his abilities actually were, and this is hot stuff. But it is all we have.
I can't believe someone of his talent, did not have 50 CD's
Such is the support of the Arts and jazz in this country.
In the richest country in the world you would think that someone would have stepped up to the plate and have supported his work financially. . . when I met him he was struggling, teaching in the back end of a store. He struggled did it mostly alone and his way. At least we have this recording and his method books to enjoy;I hope for years to come. Buy this CD. The family he left behind will appreciate it I'm sure. RIP Warren.

I took lessons from Warren for a few years, and this CD doesnt even begin to show just how good he is. He could play the hardest licks on this CD while he was talking to you..he was just that good. I heartily reccomend this CD to any jazz lover!

Simply Awsome!.......2000-01-07

I had the pleasure to play with Warren on one occasion. It was during a workshop that he held for his students last year. We played about 8 hours that day; I was in heaven. I knew right from the start when he began playing that I was truely amongst greatness. My only regret was that I didn't get to play with him sooner. This is a great CD for anyone who loves clean guitar playing. It is a favorite of mine. I listen to it a lot. I only wish he were still here to make more of it.

Warren Nunes Must Be In Your Collection.......1999-12-09

The late Warren Nunes played more coherently than any other jazz guitarist. His lines and melody chord arrangements have a refined simplicity and inner logic that continues right through the changes, and really transcends the instrument itself. At the same time, he played with spontaneous fire and energy. He was a masterful teacher and I will miss him.

Superb music.......1999-04-22

Half Moon Bay is a fascinating piece of music. When I first heard selections perhaps 12 years ago over KTVW in L.A., they were unlike any other sounds I had ever heard. We've come to know it as New Age Music. Aura's "Dream Dancer" is exotic and superb. Along with Richard Burmer's "Bhakti Point," these are the two most beautiful pieces of "New Age" music I have ever heard. I never tire of hearing them.

For the record, I am a male senior citizen.

Bill Evans must be acknowledged as one of the finest pianists in all of jazz. A cool, intellectual player, Evans adopted bop's sophisticated chording and united it with a unique, horn-like phrasing. On Half Moon Bay, Evans is captured live in California with one of his finest rhythm sections--Eddie Gomez on bass and Marty Morell on drums. Recorded in 1973, these previously unreleased performances are both evocative and introspective. Evans digs deep into his vast repertoire and turns in sparking renditions of classics like "Waltz for Debby," "Autumn Leaves," and even "Someday My Prince Will Come." A great version of the Evans trio -- Morrell and Gomez. They seemed to lift themselves to an enthusiastic audience. Interesting to compare to some songs that overlap those on the great Village Vanguard lives sessions. These don't come off badly...which says "these don't come off badly when compared to the best Evans ever".

"Half Moon Bay" is an excellent performance by the trio that recorded the superb "Tokyo Concert" earlier in the year. This is classic Bill Evans for this period. Gomez plays well, although at times he is a bit showy for my taste (I've always felt Evans' best performances were from when he had either LaFaro or Johnson as his bassist). No matter, still an excellent performance by one of the finest jazz pianists ever.

Expressive, moving album from a captivating instrumentalist.......2004-06-29

Playing Time - 36:07 -- James Alan Shelton knows how to make a listener very happy with his full guitar sound and clean picking on a number of catchy melodies like his own self-penned opener, "Half Moon Bay," and a handful of traditional favorites like "Goodbye Liza Jane," "Darlin' Nellie Gray," "Little Bennie," "Road to Columbus" and "Texas Gales." Shelton also plays some banjo on a favorite Webb Pierce number, "Tupelo County Jail." We even hear Shelton pick the eight strings of the mandolin on "Married Life Blues" and "Eight More Miles to Louisville." This all adds up to a great showcase of Shelton's multi-instrumental talent, accompanied by Dr. Ralph Stanley, Ralph Stanley II, Steve Sparkman, Adam Steffey, Tim Stafford, Barry Bales, Hunter Berry, Shawn Lane, Dan Moneyhun, Todd Meade, John Rigsby, Keith Williams, and Bill Dunham.

From Virginia, James is the lead guitar player for Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys. Learning to pick out melodies on guitar from listening to his maternal grandfather's harmonica, James also caught a good share of bluegrass on television. His early bluegrass bands included the Bluegrass Travelers, the Larkin Brothers, Flint Hill, and Blue Ridge. In 1992, James first appeared for a short time with Ralph Stanley when Junior Blankenship took a few weeks off. In early 1994, James when to work for Ralph on a fulltime basis. Six solo album projects have documented his music during the last decade. One, in collaboration with crosspicking legend George Shuffler, was nominated by IBMA for the 2000 Recorded Event of the Year Award. Shelton now picks a 1946 Martin or Signature Huss and Dalton dreadnought guitar.

It's especially nice to hear an album that doesn't try to push the tempos too far to extreme. The material chosen should be lyrical, fluid, precise and not overly tricky. The band is obviously trying to capture the mountain mood with instrumental passages (especially guitar) that allow the songs to breathe. Look closely at the succinct liner notes and discover that less than half of the tracks include banjo. John Rigsby sings "Handsome Molly" solo, and "Little Bennie" features a trio of Ralph Stanley, his son, and Rigsby. The trio for the other three vocal numbers is Moneyhun, Lane and Stafford. Unlike many projects that emphasize one or the other, it's a treat to hear nearly equal offerings of instrumental and vocal numbers.

"Half Moon Bay" has a very pleasing personality. While certainly not explosive, the album is still very expressive and moving. A very captivating instrumentalist, James Alan Shelton and friends resist the temptation to overplay. Their recipe for traditional music includes just the right ingredients and proportions.
