5 out of 5 stars Full Custom Gospel Awesomeness.......2007-07-19

This album was the first I'd ever heard from Reverend Horton Heat. At the height of the grunge craze, when Sub Pop ruled the world in '93 or so, a friend played me this album. I'd never heard anything like it; a modern version of rockabilly that made the Stray Cats look like Perry Como. All these years later, I have now owned about 4 copies of Full Custom Gospel Sounds, plus a few more RHH albums, none of which have the pure rock n roll energy that this one has. My personal highlights are 400 Bucks & Wiggle Stick. Definitely THE Rev Horton Heat album to buy

5 out of 5 stars the reverend's finest hour.......2006-01-18

A fantastic album with great songs and God-like guitar playing. The sound on this one is pretty raw and the music jumps out of the speakers and grabs you by the throat. I have no problem admitting that I've played air guitar to "Devil's Chasing Me" on more than one occassion.

5 out of 5 stars Rockabillyness is next to godliness.......2004-03-06

Don't listen to anyone who says anything bad about this album... This is the first reverend album I ever bought, It's the one I've listened to the most, and it is still hands-down the best. Smoke em if ya got em is a tad sophmoric, though it was a brilliant start, liquor in the front is a little harder (can you say Al Jourgenson) and lacks a little of the rockabilly feel but is probably the second best... martini time and space heater begin to waiver and get a little pop and we aren't going to talk about Spend a night in the box.... Lucky 7 tried to get back to the real Reverend feel, but we have to accept the Rev is mellowing out and getting a little older, his music is heading the way of Chet Atkins (not that that is a bad thing) but If you really wanna know what it feels like to be bombarded with pure Psychobilly fury you buy this album! Jim Heath is one of the most talented guitar players on the planet, Jimbo Wallace plays the fastest slap bass I know and this album hits hard.... Go buy a bowling shirt and an old car.... then pop this cd into your deck and just crank it and drive.... The Reverend is a God among men.... he makes lesser guitar players quiver and every track on this cd is perfect.... no question.. I've listened to a lot of Rockabilly, Psychobilly and Swing and heard some great friggin bands (side note check out Deke Dickerson and the Ecco-Phonics) but I always come back to the Rev cause he knows what it's all about... fast cars, fast woman, booze, drugs, steak, Satan, Texas, and Rock and Roll!

4 out of 5 stars Mostly cooks, but some weak moments.......2003-08-30

I got introduced to the Rev. Horton Heat about ten years ago, and recently picked up this CD. Thought it was great then, and I'm glad to say, still gets me going. The Texas punked-up rockabilly pretty much cooks throughout this CD until the end, when it sort of runs out of gas and degenerates into filler.

Those of you, such as myself, not into sophomoric lyrics will want to pass on "Wiggle Stick", a pointless ode to a critical part of his anatomy and "400 Bucks".

But all in all, a pretty rockin' good time.

2 out of 5 stars Sounds dated, expected to enjoy it but didnt........2003-08-24

I really didnt care for the cd, its overproduced the vocals sound like they're being sung through a voice-box, and they're not focused nor powerful unfortunately. The speedier tracks seem to lack control and have none of the power of equally speedy punk or thrash. Its like they're trying to outrun themselves.
The tracks themselves try to sound upbeat, but underneath it all I found the music somewhat despressing despite the uptempo.
I've been suggested some of the Reverend Horton Heats newer more mellow stuff so I will check that out before I write the band off entirely.

5 out of 5 stars A Rockin' Mix of Music.......2006-10-10

Most of what I've hear of contemporary so-called "christian rock" is just god-awful crap. The Found Cats, however, have done something great. They have combined two of the great musical traditions, gospel and rockabilly into a style of music that sounds great.

Congratulations to the Found Cats for creating a great new sound!

5 out of 5 stars This Totally Rocks!.......2005-09-24

I have to preface this by saying I'm not even remotely religious, or a Christian. However, I have a deep appreciation of all forms of music, especially that which is sung from the heart. I stumbled upon The Found Cats on one of my (many!) rockabilly CD combinations, and went from being instantly impressed to totally enamored! These guys are GREAT. The harmonies are amazing, the message is delivered straight up and without apology, and they ROCK. Any fan of rockabilly, gospel, and fantastic music in general is blessed that The Found Cats exist, have cut a record, and are ready to burn your ears off.

5 out of 5 stars Hallelujah!!-- Rockabilly style!.......2004-11-11

I bought this CD on a lark... I love rockabilly and I love gospel-- (although what is today called "Christian rock" leaves me cold to say the least!)-- so I decided to give it a try.

What I acquired from that little bit of curiosity has become one of my favorite albums! FULL GOSPEL ROCKABILLY is a Classic from beginning to end... and you know something? It stomps all the other CCM at the record store to pieces! These guys have no fear of naming the name of Jesus and telling it straight (and why would they?-- It's not like they actually expect to get airplay on your average fluffy CCM station!) They are true mavericks in that sense, and so the resulting album actually works as straight rockabilly or straight gospel! A rare feat if you ask me...

All the tracks are good, but my favorites are "Living in your grace," a cool billy ballad; "John the Baptist," a "Mystery Train" style rocker; and the final cut "Carbon Canyon Road (The True Story of the salvation of Pete Ludovico,)" a story song that has to be heard to be believed...

I LOVE this album! I hope these guys cut another. Amen, Bretheren!

    Album Description

With "The Full Catastrophe" - a record declared one of the year's best in The Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll - William Lee Ellis works the roots of American music and twists them to his own designs. In 16 original songs that range from gospel-blues to rockabilly, from Delta swing to haunting guitar instrumentals, his second solo recording brings together the pieces of the American music puzzle that has been his life.

Guest appearances by Memphis music legends Paul Burlison and Jim Dickinson, as well as by Tony Ellis - Bill's father and a former member of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys - highlight this exploration of the heart of American music traditions, produced by Ellis's musical partner and multi-instrumentalist Larry Nager.
