Four Stars For This??? It's the memories.......2004-04-13
Many fans left TJW at this point. They thought he sold out (not unlike Bowie fans with "Modern Love"). However he didn't sell out fully. Sure some of these songs are designed for the dance floor but he's still got some good swamp rock songs (i.e. Texas Woman) and some very atmospheric songs (i.e. Rainy Day Lover). The only song a TJW fan might have heard was "Lady in my Life" which got a fair bit of AOR play. Here's my thoughts on the songs:
1. Soulful Eyes (better than Barry White any day)
2. You Taught Me How to Love (average)
3. You Are Loved by Me (more swampy than dance)
4. Rainy Day Lover (one of his better ones)
5. We'll Live on Love (one of his best romantic ones)
6. Making Love Is Good for You (more rock than dance)
7. Texas Woman (rock)
8. Hold on to Your Hiney (dance - I name my dog Hiney after this song)
9. Swamp Boogie (dance)
10. That Loving Feeling (mellow - nice female vocal affects)
11. Dangerous (swamp rock)
12. Naughty Lady (average)
13. Our Day Will Come (average)
14. If You're Gonna Love Somebody (average)
15. Swamp Rat (not as swamp rock as the name implies but okay)
16. Do You Have a Garter Belt (friends like this although I don't particular)
17. Down by the Border (okay)
18. Lady in My Life (quiet, AOR play, should have done better)
19. We Belong Together (okay)
20. You Just Get Better All the Time (quiet, a good one)
21. Living in the River City (new to me as it is a bonus track. I liked it alot and it fits with the other material)
22. Excerpt from a 1997 Sydney Interview [*] (I've now heard this 10-12 times but I still stop and listen to him talk about his music. Got to love this man's voice.)
In honesty, if you are hearing this for the first time, you are going to say it's not all that great and sounds much the same. You'd likely give it 3 stars. But for me it brings back memories of these albums when they were released and the many times I played them.
If there is one thing wrong with this CD, it's that there are no "swamp songs" on it. There's no songs about the culture or life or growing up in Louisina or anywhere else in southern USA. (even Texas Woman is not really about Texas - it could just as easily been "Idaho Woman" - if anyone sung about Idaho.) This is where I think the producers took him in the wrong direction. Sure, speed up the beat and make some of the songs more danceable. Have him do talk overs and sing slow deep love songs. But he should have stayed with a southern theme. Even if the themes left the bayou and went into New Orleans then it would still have been southern. A love song to a Cajun women instead of a "generic" woman.
So these are good records to bring back memories but they are not distinctive swamp rock music nor particularily southern music.
A happy find.......2003-05-28
