I want to preface this by saying I am a huge Johnny Cash fan. I have the Columbia boxset, all the recent American Recordings, Love/God/Murder boxset, Dylan/Cash Sessions, American (Recordings) Outtakes, 3 live albums (including 2 classic prison cds), and several of his albums. One of the things I came to realize was that I really needed some essential tunes from Cash's groundbreaking days at Sun Records. Many tunes like 'Born to Lose', one of my favorite classics growing up listening to my parents longplayers (33 RPM records), were missing from my collection. I started doing more intense research of the MAN IN BLACK's catalogue and came to realize I really wanted the BEAR FAMILY boxsets that cover each era of his career ie 1954-1959 etc. Thing is, those typically run you from seventy to one-hundred forty buckaroos!

I stumbled upon this cd set back early this year while doing 'research' (it wasn't this fun in school) at another online cd site. I'd say 80% of his work with the SUN label is here and virtually all the essential material. I was able to get this set online for nine dollars shipping and all. It may cost you a little more here at amazon[.com], but I noted that marketplace third party sellers have it.

Well, I assume most folks reading this are already well familiar with the first artist ever inducted into both the rock n roll and country halls of fame (he beat Elvis Presley by several years). He is also the first to complete the trifecta of being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. I have the Elvis 50s Masters and I consider the music on these 2 cds listed here to be every bit as essential! Johnny's powerful baritone and the deceptively simple driving rhythm of the Tennessee Two were essential pieces to the development of the puzzle that would unveil rock n roll.

This is a no frills set, mind you. No liner notes, just a cover and cd inside. Almost all of the essential Sun material is here for a measley few cents a track! Many might conclude that the sound quality would not be up to snuff. I'm here to tell you that the sound quality here is comparable to that on the Columbia boxset, although it certainly would not match the incredible clarity and 'loudness' of the recent reissues (most notably The Fabulous Johnny Cash).

I noted that the sales rank of this set was in the ridiculous low rungs, so I thought I would add my 2 cents about it being worth its weight in gold. 'Folsom Prison', 'I Walk The Line', 'Guess Things Happen That Way', 'Home of the Blues' etc., they are all here along with other less known delights like 'Born to Lose', 'Blue Train', 'Wreck of the Old 97', 'Mean Eyed Cat, 'Country Boy' and on and on and on! Get this set, The Essential Johnny Cash 1955-1983 (Columbia boxset), Live at Folsom Prison and Live at San Quentin, The Mercury Years, and all three (soon to be 4) cds in the recent American Recordings series (American Recordings, Unchained, American III) and you'll have a fairly comprehensive Johnny Cash collection. Really I'd start here because this is where it all began!

This set is 5 Stars for the music enclosed, 10 Stars for the price, 4 for sound, and 0 for the lack of any liner notes. Since it gives such a bang for the buck, I'll bump it up to 5 overall.

Johnny Cash was one of the most Honest voices to Ever hit the airwaves no matter what the style of music.He sung songs like He was putting his own Blood on the Line.like the song "I walk the line" He truly didn't bow down to nobody. He always had his own way&style about doing things.He was a really good story-teller. Johnny Cash in some ways was a pre-cursor to Hip-Hop because He could create a Atmosphere&tell the story in a edgy kind of way. His vocal Instrument could grab you&make you feel all the details that were going down.
