Buck Owens (Sundazed)

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
When Buck Owens stepped into the studio in October of 1958 to cut his self-penned single "Second Fiddle," his career at Capitol was idling. That track merely dented the country charts, but it was enough to get him to return to the studio to cut three more singles the following year. All three--his own "Under Your Spell Again," Harlan Howard's "Above and Beyond," and the Owens-Harlan composition "Excuse Me"--hit the Top 10, each one charting higher than the one before it. Those four cuts form the foundation of Owens's debut LP, released in 1961. At this point his music still sounded more in line with the honky-tonk of his Texas birthplace than the edgier Bakersfield style that became his calling card; new recruit and future right-hand man Don Rich hadn't added his signature Telecaster guitar licks yet. That left Ralph Mooney's swooping, whining, stunning pedal steel as the most prominent instrumental voice. Owens filled the record with an assortment of two-and-a-half-minute songs that managed to be both bright and accessible as well as honest and direct, a songwriting combination that would prove successful for him throughout the decade. --Marc Greilsamer

Buck Owens's role as co-host of Hee Haw hokum was imprinted so strongly on the public's consciousness that it tends to overshadow his musical legacy. As this set of chart-toppers attests, no country artist dominated the early-to-mid 1960s like the Bard of Bakersfield. His twisted, elongated syllables and twangy interplay with guitarist Don Rich put a signature stamp on material ranging from the uptempo "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail"--a pop crossover smash as well--to the heartfelt balladry of "Together Again" and "Only You (Can Break My Heart)." A late '80s revival of "Streets of Bakersfield" in duet with Dwight Yoakam, Owens's leading disciple, put Buck back atop the charts. Liner testimonials from Chris Isaak and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons attest to the reach of his influence, while his breakthrough hit, "Act Naturally," inspired a popular cover (on the Help! album) by the Beatles. --Don McLeese

Album Description

5 out of 5 stars Buck Owens again.......2007-06-09

I love this CD. When I was a child I used to listen to Buck Owens all the time. As I grew I just started listening to newer singers. I went on the Web and found the album and decided to order it. I love it. I like listening to the older singers again. Listening to the older singers bring back my childhood and my life when I used to live in Idaho.

Backed by the sterling Buckaroos, Owens's trademark Bakersfield honky tonk was grittier and meatier than that of contemporaries like George Jones. Relying heavily on the crisp lead guitar of Don Rich and the steel-guitar strains of Tom Brumley, the music possessed a distinctive locomotive rhythm. Rhino's comprehensive 62-song collection follows Owens from his landmark 1961 duets with Rose Maddox through early collaborations with Harlan Howard to his first number one hit, "Act Naturally." Owens would put a stranglehold on the country charts, reaching the top spot consistently with hits including "Together Again" and "I've Got a Tiger By the Tail." Along the way, he'd mix in Chuck Berry covers, bluegrass staples, and even a Paul Simon tune. His later work features duets with Susan Raye, Emmylou Harris, and Dwight Yoakam. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Buck lives on!.......2007-05-26

Like Merle Haggard and Wynn Stewart, Buck Owens is the personification of the Bakersfield sound. This box set covers some of his very best material, and features a well-written booklet cram-packed with information to help take you through the years of one of country's top artists. Like Haggard, Buck's backing musicians are as good as they come, led by the incomparable Don Rich.

4 out of 5 stars Buck You will always be with us!.......2006-08-24

Where do we start,

Buck will always be missed by us.
A great human being, A major influence on the bakersfield style and the country music industry.
A Songwriter like no other, and ofcourse Hee Haw was a great success due to him and to Roy Clark.

Now regarding the boxset, I really enjoyed it. 3CDs are packed with hits that will surely entertain you.

But, please note that the boxset has missed a number of amazing songs. So, please don't overlook buying the boxset, but also purchase:
1. The Carnegie Hall Concert by Owens, Buck .
2. In Japan!.
3. Buck Owens sings Harlan Howard.
4. In London [LIVE]

These 4 titles are what come to mind.

Thanks & enjoy,
Nawaf

5 out of 5 stars buck is king.......2005-09-03

this is a wonderful box set! a must have for any serious music collector. of course, his early material is some of the greatest music to ever have been performed but also included is the best of his later 'stuff'. the only disappointment for me was/is the lack of any of his 'live at panther hall' material. A++++++++ five star box, buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars Good set.......2005-09-01

I'm really not into box sets, but this is a good one. Buck Owens has no peers and once you listen to this set, you'll understand that noone will ever come close. The first two discs are my favorites, with the third seemingly out of place. Dont get me wrong, the third (late Buck) disc has some gems, but it lacks the magic of Don Rich and is infused with the weird late-'60's vibe that hit country music. There will never be another combination like Buck & Don Rich; and there will never be another star who can sing the saddest "cry-in-your-beer" song in that famous 3/4 upbeat. This is what country music is all about; and forget the Buck of Hee Haw....this is the most addictive collection of songs you'll ever come across. My teenage daughter and son even poked fun at the true honky-tonk, down-home, lyrics when I play them in the car....but I've since caught both of them humming and even singing the songs when they thought noone else was around. This is timeless music so dont miss out on it.

5 out of 5 stars bcuk owens is a great artist.......2005-04-02

this is a great box set collection. i could only think of a few i really like that didnt make it here with the other great songs.. but mainly live ones. i love buck owens' music he was great back then and to me he is still great today. yes dwight yoakam kinda helpd get buck back on the radio' in someways i know he got him to a younger group' i grew up watching him on heehaw. him and roy clark. but i guess my peronal favorites on this box set would be all the hits. im so glad to see buck still alive and goin strong' buck's the king of bakersfield country.

    Product Description

From the vaults of the award-winning PBS Austin City Limits TV show, this is the latest release in the acclaimed Live From Austin, TX series.

Recorded live on October 23, 1988, this CD captures all the hits and more, and includes songs that were never aired on the original TV broadcast.

Maybe it was an epiphany of sorts. As Buck tells it, One day I was watching Austin City Limits and Dwight Yoakam was on, then he dedicates the program to Buck Owens. So I said, I m going to see what this kid is like. It wasn t long after that he was on stage with Dwight singing his old hits. Buck was bitten by the bug to return to music, after calling it quits almost ten years earlier.

This man from Sherman, Texas probably best-known as the wide-grinning rube on Hee Haw for so many years started a country music revolution. Or more accurately, a counter-revolution. It was called the Bakersfield Sound, He and fellow revolutionary Merle Haggard were cranking out raw, hard-driving honky-tonk music that stood the country-pop coming out of Nashville on its head.

5 out of 5 stars Great disc for the Buck Owens fan .......2007-01-05

Although it took quite awhile to get here, this imported cd is a great and comprehensive cd for the Buck Owens fan. It has forty hits and is a varied sampling of Buck Owen's legacy as a country star. The great thing about this record is that is chronicles the past and present, having hits like "Streets of Bakersfield" on one of the discs. Another aspect of this cd is its great quality; the sound is exemplary.

The influence Owens had as a country artist is really illustrated in this cd, as there are many songs in here that you have probably heard in shows, movies, or remakes, namely "Act Naturally", "Johnny B. Goode", and "Under My Spell." One of my favorite songs is "Sam's Place." This is a fantastic CD to add to your collection, especially if you are a country music fan!

This 1964 standout is named for the double-sided single that was the first 45 to place both cuts atop the country charts. In fact, they owned the top two spots on the chart three weeks running, swapping positions in the middle week! "Together Again," a ballad distinguished by Tom Brumley's weeping steel, and "My Heart Skips a Beat," a midtempo shuffle featuring Don Rich's biting guitar licks and high harmony vocals, were both written by Owens himself and perfectly exemplify the Owens writing style: simple and bright-sounding songs aimed at working-class honky-tonk patrons who wanted to forget the real world for a few hours. The remainder of the LP maintains these high standards, thanks to a strong set of original Owens tearjerkers and a number of well-chosen covers--"A-11," "Hello Trouble," "Close Up the Honky Tonks," and "Truck Drivin' Man"--that remain defining, hard-driving Bakersfield classics. Sundazed adds a pair of chart-topping singles from the previous year--"Act Naturally" and "Love's Gonna Live Here"--making this CD release a fundamental entry into any country enthusiast's collection. --Marc Greilsamer

    Album Description

Full Title - Together Again/My Heart Skips A Beat. Named after his double-sided number one hit single of early 1964, 'Together Again/My Heart Skips A Beat' is one of Buck Owens' strongest albums of the '60s, as well as one of his few records to stick firmly in the honky tonk camp. Now Sundazed brings you this reissue with 2 bonus tracks 'Love's Gonna Live Here' and 'Act Naturally', both of which were originally released by Capitol as singles. 1995.

From the first tune to the last,Buck Owens and his Buckaroos will have you hooked on some the best country tunes out there.Buck and Don harmonize perfectly.Three of Buck's steel guitar players strut their stuff here, most notably, Tom Brumley on Together Again. His seamless turnaround on the steel is a major cause of the songs success and beauty.Ralph Mooney "steels" the show on many of the tunes.Jay McDonald is also a major presence on a few of the tracks. You can't call your collection complete without this CD in it.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best!.......2007-04-11

"Together Again/My Heart Skips A Beat" was on the top of my "must have" Buck owens albums....this album satisfies all my hard-core honky tonk tendencies, song for song it has to rate among his best, from the opening tracks shuffle beat followed by my personal favorite track on here the classic "Close Up The Honky-Tonks", then there is the unbelievably credible country version of "Save The Last Dance For Me" (sounds as if it were written as a country song).."A-11".."Storm Of Love"..they are all good..nary a clunker here...if your a Buck fan?..Order this as fast as you possibly can!...a MUST have!

5 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets.......2006-08-23

I can't understand how anyone could give this album less than five stars. It just doesn't get any better than this. In fact, it will probably never be this good again.

4 out of 5 stars That song it sure does fit me........2006-08-08

This album by Buck Owens was released in 1964. The title songs were from a single that saw both sides become #1 hits. That was the first time both sides of a single reached #1 on the Country charts. The album included one other hit song, which was a cover of the Drifters' song "Save the Last Dance For Me". Other than the hits, there were a number of other great songs on the album, including "Close Up the Honkey Tonks", "Truck Drivin' Man", "A-11", "Hello Trouble" and "Ain't It Amazin' Gracie" (the latter became a hit when Buck re-recorded it nine years later). The CD adds two bonus tracks, which are the #1 hits "Love's Gonna Live Hear" and "Act Naturally". This is one of Buck's best albums.

5 out of 5 stars When Country was Real.......2006-05-30

Another fine Buck Owens Cd released by Sundazed Records; they've done a great job of re-releasing his collection. This Cd was originally released in 1964, but the sound is incredibly clear. "Together Again/My Heart Skips A Beat" provides 14 of Buck's songs, including a few of his biggest hits: "My Heart Skips a Beat", "A-11", "Hello Trouble", and the greatest Steel Guitar solo yet, "Together Again". The world lost one of the finest stylists ever when Buck recently passed away.....here's your chance to own a little bit of that magic. I'm not sure how long these albums will remain available, but you'd be wise to grab them while you can.

Today he's heralded as a traditionalist who rejected the Nashville Sound's pop-rock concessions, but the real secret behind Owens's enormous success is that he embraced rock & roll more completely than any other country contemporary. The 16 hits here trace Owens and his Buckaroos as they move from more rural-sounding hits such as "Under Your Spell Again" to the rockabilly-inspired rhythms (Owens backed Gene Vincent for awhile) of his driving "freight train" sound, a series of classic singles that always sounded modern, electric, and decidedly urban. Volume 1 barely scratches the surface, but if you've never had your heart skip a beat when Don Rich cranks that driving electric lead to "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail," then you've just got to hear this. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars Ol' Buck and his Buckaroo's.......2006-07-01

NO ONE in this world could ever sing "Together Again" like Buck Owens. That was the main reason I bought this CD, but the other songs on this tract brought back many good memories......and some sad one's too, like the untimely death of Don Rich. Together, those two made magic that I think died with Don. I hope Buck and Don are "together again" making that Bakersfield Sound in heaven. Get this CD and I know you'll be pleased.......I was.

    5 out of 5 stars gone---will never be forgotten.......2006-04-02

My late dad had many of these songs on various 45s and LPs
while I was growing up, and I listened to them a lot.

As I write this, it's been about a week since Buck Owens
passed away at the age of 76. Hearing these great country

5 out of 5 stars A golden nugget shinging brightly! .......2006-03-29

Buck Owens was a titan in the music industry, not just in the 1960s, but throughout the decades after that as well. True, the songs on this CD were recorded between 1959 and 1971; but because of Buck's incredible success most true country music aficionados always remembered Buck as being the best of the best. Heck, I don't even go in for country music--but this CD I had to run out and buy after listening to the sound bytes here on Amazon!

My favorite tune on this CD is the first track, "Under Your Spell Again." Like they all say, Buck did infuse his brand of country music with a rock and roll flavor that helped him make his mark. The music here truly is exhilarating, thrilling, and very memorable. I also like the booklet that comes with the CD--there is an essay by Rich Kienzle; and some input from the artist himself! A fine booklet indeed! SMILE

Back up vocals are provided by The Jordanaires.

I would recommend this CD if you don't know about Buck's work but like the sound clips here, as I did, and then decide you want to introduce yourself to Buck's artistry. If you REALLY like this CD; then get the CD of Buck's Greatest Hits, volume two, which is also put out on the Rhino label. There is a volume three as well.

As I said before, I don't even like country music--but this material is so darn good you'll like it just as much as I did! It's a very easy listen with great musical arrangements and the sound quality is excellent. I'll probably love volume two of Buck's hits every bit as much as I love this CD. I highly recommend this CD for people who are just beginning to get acquainted with Buck's work. Fans of country music will enjoy this as well. You rule, Buck!

Buck Owens wasn't the first country star to headline Carnegie Hall; Ernest Tubb played the hallowed hall nearly 20 years before Buck brought his Buckaroos to New York in 1966. Owens, however, signaled the ascension of a new era of plugged-in country when he grudgingly gave in to his manager's plea that he appear at the eminent venue. (Remember, this is the guy who insisted in song that he wouldn't live in New York City "if they gave me the whole dang town.") Owens was flying high in the mid-'60s, which is demonstrated by the hit-laden repertoire found on Sundazed's expanded reissue of the original LP: "Act Naturally," "Together Again," "Cryin' Time," and "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail" are just a few of chart-busters Bakersfield's best parade before a welcoming audience. They even repay the Beatles' nod in their direction--Ringo's version of "Act Naturally"--with a caterwauling cover of "Twist and Shout." Buck, ace lead guitarist Don Rich, and the rest of the Buckaroos are in fine form throughout, mixing country weepers and twangy uptempo numbers with a good deal of goofing around. One gets the impression that, while Buck wouldn't want to settle in the Big Apple, he might not have minded taking the whole dang town back west with him. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Great live album !.......2006-05-02

I love live albums and this one is a dandy. Although I was never a huge Buck Owens fan, I found this CD to be thoroughly enjoyable. To me, the between song banter makes it that much more fun.

5 out of 5 stars Great live disc from the original Buckaroos.......2006-03-01

Every Buck Owens fan should own this live disc with the original line up. Some of the between song banter can be a little much, but the performance is EXCELLENT. Check out In London(1969)as well, different band, but equally as GOOD!

4 out of 5 stars Too much talking.......2003-04-25

Certainly one of the best live country albums. But Owens and his band talk, play and joke around too much: a 50 min CD with only 25 min of music... But what music!

4 out of 5 stars GREAT LIVE COUNTRY MUSIC.......2002-10-01

For someone like me, that was 4 when this lp was recorded, this recording is a kind of an historic monument. You can hear one of the best live country acts of the time as it was today. The sound is great, Buck and the band are in great shape, the audience is entusiastic and Buck knows how to entertain. Great live recording, maybe one of the best live recordings of country music.

5 out of 5 stars Five star band playing a five star concert.......2001-08-19

In addition to the incredible songwriting, singing and playing, Owens and his band show just what hotshot entertainers they were. Their staging, replete with skits, song stops for quick punchlines, and Buck's interaction with the audience (something he continues to do to this very day) weave their brilliant work into a whole lot more than a simple recitation of their hit song catalog.

By this 1966 date, their catalog was too extensive to be played through in a single show, hence three medleys are used to cover a lot of ground. Even with those thirteen abbreviated titles, they had plenty of material left to play in full form. Owens' voice carries from the stage even more powerfully than it does in the studio, and the tightness of his harmonies with Don Rich are mesmerizing. The telepathy between Owens and Rich goes a long way to explaining the former's depression upon the 1974 death of the latter.

The confidence with which the band kicks into every number is simply astonishing. Owens segues his introductions seamlessly into the opening line of a song, and the band follows without the slightest hint of hesitation. They are at once tight and coherent as on record, but with the looseness and swing of musicians intimately familiar with each other's playing. Each track bursts with the elation of musicians playing in a band firing on all cylinders. The response from the audience echoes the energy coming from the stage.

If the Buckaroos weren't the very best band playing live in 1966 (and this recording suggests they might have been), they were certainly among the very top. This recording captures them in a signature show; a must-have for fans of the Bakersfield sound. Sundazed's reissue (apparently the first since the album's original release) adds bonus tracks to the original (all in superb stereo), along with backstage photos, the original and new liner notes and remembrances from original Buckaroos, Willie Cantu, Doyle Holly and Tom Brumley.

    4 out of 5 stars It's plain to see........2006-08-28

In 1965, Buck Owens and his Buckaroos released the first, and only, instrumental that ever went to #1 on the Country chart, "Buckaroo". It's a great, uptempo number featuring Buckaroo Don Rich on lead guitar. The record company decided to capitalize on the success of this #1 hit, and put together an album of "the instrumental hits" of Buck Owens and his Buckaroos, even though "Buckaroo" was really their only instrumental hit. 8 of the 12 cuts on the album had already appeared on previously released albums. You might think an album of country instrumentals would get rather repetetive, but it does actually have a rather diverse sound, since different tunes feature different lead instruments. There are four polkas with lead guitar work by Buck himself. There are four fiddle tunes played by Don Rich. There are two tunes highlighting Tom Brumley on steel guitar. And "Country Rag" gives all of these guys a chance to solo. The CD adds two bonus tracks, which are instrumental versions of Buck's hits, played by the Buckaroos on the album The Buck Owens Songbook. This is a solid album, despite it's somewhat "thrown together" nature.

    5 out of 5 stars Twang.......2003-09-22

Awhile ago Bonnie Owens lamented to Eddie Stubbs, on his WSM Nashville radio show, that the problem with country music nowadays is that they have taken all the twang out of it. If you want twang get this album. I bought the 33 1/3 LP album when it came out in the 60's and was glad to recently get the CD. Still sounds good. You can't buy this sound on today's recording market.

3 out of 5 stars 1965 collection of instrumental album tracks and singles.......2002-04-24

Throughout their stellar career, Buck Owens and the Buckaroos were both a crack live outfit and a hit-making recording group. Their music resounded with the twin Telecaster guitars and harmony singing of Owens and his right-hand man, Don Rich, along with the ace instrumental talents of Tom Brumley (pedal steel), Doyle Holly (bass), Willie Cantu (drums) and others. Throughout the '60s, their studio albums usually contained an instrumental track or two, and this 1965 album anthologizes many of those tracks. It also introduces "Buckaroo," the hit instrumental single that would become Owens' theme song.

These tracks gave the band members a chance to stretch out, and gave listeners an extended opportunity to enjoy the players' instrumental abilities. Rich's fiddle playing on "Orange Blossom Special," "Faded Love," and "A Maiden's Prayer" show off the talent that attracted Owens to him in the first place, and his guitar lead on "Buckaroo" heads up one of the most memorable country instrumentals ever recorded. Tom Brumley's steel on "Bud's Bounce" and Leon McAuliffe's "Steel Guitar Rag" show off the West Coast style he developed, and the influence Ralph Mooney had on his playing. Owens himself, better known for his vocals (especially after relinquishing lead-guitar duties to Don Rich), flat picks a storm on his trio of polkas, "Raz-Ma-Taz Polka," "Country Polka" and "Buck's Polka."

Unlike bands that made their name as instrumental combos, The Buckaroos chops were equally key on their vocal tracks. Their instrumental recordings are certainly fine, but given what else the band was capable of, most of these tracks are better heard as album accompaniment. After a half-dozen, one begins to long for the harmonies of Owens and Rich to complement the instruments.

Sundazed's reissue augments the original dozen tracks with a pair taken from the 1966 release, "The Buck Owens Songbook," an album of hits re-recorded as instrumentals under the direction of Don Rich. Both tracks ("Act Naturally" and "I've Got a Tiger By the Tail") are fine, but greatly miss Owens vocals.

    4 out of 5 stars Hee Haw.......2001-04-21

Ok, "Hee-Haw" was one of the oddest shows in television history, with the worst one-liners this side of Benny Hill. But the music--and keep in mind this is coming from a one-time Rock purist--the music on "Hee-Haw" was just about the best ever seen on American television.

The original hosts were Roy Clark--he of the syrupy slow songs and cheesey infomercial guitar course, but a consumate instrumentalist--and Buck Owens, who was a revolutionary country star before Dwight Yoakum or Wynona Judd were born.

This album, which finds its way to the top of my play pile more often than I admit to my old Rocker friends, is supurb from beginning to end.

It's a very good band, but the secret ingredient is the excellent guitarist, Don Rich, who combines melody and twang masterfully.

The great Buck Owens virtually dominated the country singles chart in the 1960s, carving his success by being the first truly "alternative" country artist, one who eschewed the dominant "Nashville Sound" of the time in favor of rock-hard honky-tonk. But Owens was also one of the first acts to have a consistently strong impact on the country album charts, rolling up (literally) dozens of long-play smashes (as many as three a year) throughout the decade. Although most of them revolved around his current hit single, his 1960s albums for Capitol are almost all outstanding and much more than mere filler. This 1965 gem remains close to the top of the list. The urgent title track, Owens's signature tune, was inspired by the Esso slogan ("Put a tiger in your tank") and sat atop the chart for five weeks, while the flip-side ballad, "Cryin' Time," was a top 10 hit for Ray Charles. Also here are two bonus live cuts, a Bob Wills instrumental, the cowboy story "Streets of Laredo," and a churning version of Chuck Berry's "Memphis," which sheds light on the country tendencies of rock & roll's pioneer. --Marc Greilsamer

1 out of 5 stars You just may wear it out!!!.......2007-03-10

There should be a course in college dedicated to the study of Buck Owens' (And why not, Madonna has one?) music. If you like great Classic country music(in this case, an introduction to the "Bakersfield sound"), or are at least interested in what REAL country music was (you know, the "Good stuff") you will love this one. It has all the essentials including lots of twang, and great Steele guitar and Fiddle work. Buck Owens was a genius at making great music for everyday people and the proof is right here!!!

4 out of 5 stars They played our favorite song........2006-08-14

"I've Got a Tiger By the Tail" was the only one of Buck Owens' 21 #1 Country hits to crossover and become a pop hit. Almost all of the accompanying album was recorded in December of 1964, with the exception of the fiddle instrumental "A Maiden's Prayer", which was recorded in January of that year. "I've Got a Tiger By the Tail" was the only hit from the album, although "Cryin' Time" is a classic song that later became a hit for Ray Charles. The rest of the songs on the album are mostly quite good, especially "Trouble and Me", "We're Gonna Let the Good Times Roll" and Buck's cover version of Chuck Berry's "Memphis". The CD adds two bonus tracks, which are live recordings from the various artists album Country Music Hootenany. "Act Naturally" is, of course, Buck and the Buckaroos playing their classic hit. "This Ol' Heart", on the other hand, features Buck and the Buckaroos backing up the song's writer, Bob Morris. Fans of Buck Owens should really enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2005-12-17

This is THE Buck Owens album to own, as it is the apex of his career with the Buckaroos. Don Rich never sounded tighter (and even throws a guest vocal with "Wham Bam"), and Buck is at his very best. There has never been a more distinctive & instantly recognizable sound in country music than Bcuk Owens, and this CD is reflective of that. There are a handful of hits on this one, including the title track, "Cryin' Time", "Memphis", and a live version of "Act Naturally". Besides these chart-toppers, there a few more standout tracks that could have rivalled any of Buck's other releases, including: "Trouble and Me" and "Fallin For You". The inclusion of a Bob Wills cover song "A Maiden's Prayer" completes the album. You cant go wrong with this one, and if you had to have just one Buck Owen's album, well, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Bakersfield country.......2005-10-08

I bought this album to listen to on my drive to Bakersfield where I would see Buck perform live at the Crystal Palace (which he still does every Friday and Saturday night). I chose this particular album based on its high rating by All Music Guide. I wasn't disappointed.

    4 out of 5 stars Bakersfield classic.......2002-03-06

By early '65 Buck Owens and the Buckaroos were hitting their stride as the best country band, and probably the best band period, in the USA. The twangy Bakersfield sound they'd pioneered was becoming increasingly effortless, and the fluency with which they applied it to their own songs, as well as covers, grew more and more assured and thrilling.

Like many of Owens' efforts of this period, this album is built around the title hit single that opens side one. Owens taunts the listener with a solo callout, "I've... got... a" before Don Rich kicks in with his signature harmony, announcing the song's title and catch-phrase. The ease with which the pair stays together throughout their harmony sections, one following the other's rush or lag, is breathtaking. The same session's take of "Cryin' Time," a hit for both Owens and Ray Charles, goes down tempo, but features the same brilliant lead/harmony balance.

The rest of the album includes a superb selection of Owens' originals, co-writes (with ex-wife Bonnie, Don Rich, Harlan Howard, and fellow Bakersfieldian Red Simpson), and several well-selected covers. Doyle Holly's vocal on the Western classic "Streets of Laredo" is quite a bit more moving than the corned-up version found on the Carnegie Hall disc. Tom Brumley's pedal steel and Don Rich's fiddle are especially effective on weepers like "Let the Sad Times Roll," "If You Fall Out of Love With Me" and "The Band Keeps Playin' On."

Owens' public proclamation that he'd only sing country songs apparently ran afoul of the Buckaroos' cover of Chuck Berry's "Memphis." Though conceived by its author as rock 'n' roll, the song finds a very country style in Willie Cantu's shuffle drumming and Owens' & Rich's duet singing. Owens' own "We're Gonna Let the Good Times Roll" shares a very similar intro and rhythm, yet no one seems to have scorned it as "rock 'n' roll."

Two bonus tracks include a live performance of the Buckaroos backing Bob Morris (who later wrote "Buckaroo"), and Owens & Rich singing "Act Naturally." These 1963 recordings were made at Bakersfield's Civic Auditorium, and previously available only on a rare Capitol Records anthology.

This is a solid disc full of hits and excellent album tracks that show off the power and glory of the Bakersfield Sound.

5 out of 5 stars Buck Owens and his legacy.......2002-02-26

Buck Owens dominated the country charts in the 1960s. With his signature frieght train sound, catapulted by Don Rich's searing lead guitar riffs and high tenor harmonies, Owens became the torch bearer of the Bakersfield Sound. This compilation serves up some of Owens' biggest hits including Act Naturally, Tiger by the Tail, and Together Again. It also showcases Owens' early Capitol releases including, Excuse Me I Think I've Got a Heartache and Under Your Spell Again. But this compilation does not stop there. Also included is Owens' Made in Japan, which features Don Rich's masterful fiddle overdubs and flawless guitar work. Owens'version of Streets of Bakersfield and Big in Vegas give the listener some of Owens' later works. Overall, this album displays a slice of each stage in Owens' career with Capitol Records. The style and sound featured on this album make modern country acts look like sharecroppers. This is an important album in my collection and it should be in yours too.

3 out of 5 stars Think Of Me When You're Lonely.......2001-06-12

The first volume of great juke-box music from the best Country performer of the 1960s and 70s, ALL TIME GREATEST HITS VOLUME 1 hits most of the highs--"Act Naturally," "Streets of Bakersfield, "Made In Japan," "Think Of Me," and the killer "Tiger By The Tail"--and one real clunker, "Big In Vegas."

As with all Owens records, the writing is good, the singing is better, and the guitar playing is flawless.
