This is probably the songbird's finest release ever, an album that screams quality and class while delivering an understated sound that spans the contemporary adult pop idiom and approaches the hip territory of Bonnie Raitt. Heartfelt ballads like "Highway, Highway" and Jann Arden's "Missing You" will appeal to her core fans, though it's the irresistible Stax/Volt and gospel grooves of "That's The Way It Goes," "Shame on Me," "I Know Too Much," and "Until I Was Loved by You" that best signal the artistic renaissance. Duets with Bryan Adams ("What Would It Take") and Aaron Neville ("That's What My Love Is For") are sleek international calling cards, and the raw edge of Murray's exceptional vocals speak of rediscovered passion and gutsy commitment. --Jeff Bateman

Not exactly a country artist, since her records lack twang, and too casual and intimate to make for a standard-issue MOR pop performer, Anne Murray's phenomenally warm, smooth voice has nevertheless secured a lofty place for her in both categories--and has occasionally brought her into the mainstream (read: traditionally rock and soul dominated) pop arena. If you're not a fan, or much of a country enthusiast, it's her '70s pop hits that'll make the package worthwhile. "Snowbird" is here, as is "You Needed Me." If you are a fan, or are looking for songs that hit only on the country or Canadian charts, there'll be a lot of key stuff missing. Investigate the 3 CD Now and Forever collection. --Gavin McNettCustomer Reviews:

Warm-hearted and tender-voiced, Anne Murray's lovely, inspirational music is perfectly paired with songs of devotion, praise, and faith on this double-disc collection. I cannot adequately describe the joy that listening to Anne Murray singing
God's praises brings to me. I seldom attend church, but I always take the time to play her music on Sunday mornings and commune with the Lord.
Co-workers listening from down the hall will gravitate to our unit just to
listen. Even the hard-core, profanity-driven ones find themselves in a better place, even if it is for a brief moment, when they are listening to
this CD.
Thank you, Lord, and bless you, Anne Murray!

From Amazon.com
Anne Murray, whose singular voice made her a country-pop icon in the 1970s and '80s, returns with a dual-disc set of 16 of her greatest hits, paired with 15 Tin Pan Alley pop standards. While her own signature tunes ("Snowbird," "Danny's Song") withstand time's brutal test in artistry and currency, Murray doesn't fare nearly as well with the pre-World War II tunes. She finds the modern blues heart of "What'll I Do," but she's often sidetracked by cheesy arrangements (the Dixieland treatment of "After You've Gone" is particularly onerous), and ultimately the collection fails to engage. Such hoary songs as "Dream a Little Dream of Me" and "You Made Me Love You" are too quaint and schmaltzy for a woman who came of age in the 1970s. Unlike the great Rosemary Clooney, who could infuse the most shopworn classic with new meaning, overall, Murray lacks the emotional resonance or experience in her voice to convey authenticity. Her corduroy alto remains a thing of wonder, however, and may make even her most casual fans yearn to hear it employed on a stellar album of contemporary material. --Alanna Nash

Something for everyone!.......2007-05-17
I love this CD.......2006-11-03
I bought this CD set because of a few of the songs on it, but I
discovered that there was more here for me to like, and that
Anne Murray is much better an artist than I had realized.
More standards from the Canadian songbird.......2006-09-04
Whether by her own choice or by commercial realities, Anne has released only pop, country, gospel, and Christmas standards albums since then. At this point, standards albums have flooded the market. Though Anne has contributed to that, there is a little doubt that she has a fondness for the material-- and that she is especially qualified to interpret it.
For those who liked Croonin', What a Wonderful World, What a Wonderful Christmas, and Country Croonin'-- you will also like this album. The arrangements, vocals, and overall quality are in line with those previous albums. If you haven't bought any of these, the one that stands out is the first-- Croonin'.
This album, then, is not one to surprise. Of the songs, my favorite is What I'll Do. Anne's version of Over The Rainbow is one that stands out. I also like As Time Goes By, Twilight Time, and My Buddy. The big band arrangement of After You've Gone has generated a difference of opinion-- count me in the group that likes it.
In the end, this is a good album, but not a great nor memorable one. Overall, I give it 4 stars. On a tougher comparison to other Anne Murray albums, I'd rate it a 3.

Anne's wonderful tribute to the 50's........2007-02-22
Old standarts done beautifully.......2006-08-25
Anne remembers the fifties but not rock'n'roll.......2005-05-31
Thus, the album features covers of classic songs by such great singers as Patti Page (Old Cape Cod, Allegheny moon), Gogi Grant (Wayward wind), Peggy Lee (Fever), Doris Day (Secret love), Jo Stafford (You belong to me, Make love to me), Julie London (Cry me a river), Rosemary Clooney (Hey there), De Castro sisters (Teach me tonight), Eddy Arnold (I really don't want to know (Eddy Arnold) and Perry Como (Wanted). Also here is When I fall in love, which was originally an American hit for Doris Day but which has since become a bigger hit for other artists in different countries.
True love (originally by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly) features Anne singing with the album's producer. Apparently, Anne originally asked Elton John if he'd like to sing with her but he said he didn't have time. Within a few months, he'd recorded the song with Kiki Dee and they had an international hit with it.
Anne's performances on all these songs are brilliant. If you buy the album because you enjoy Anne's music, you may discover a whole new world of fifties songs that you didn't know about. And if you buy it because of the songs, you'll discover what a fantastic singer Anne is.
Good renditions of some old familiar songs.......2005-02-24
One thing I like about the presentation is that there is a listing of the original hit versions of all the songs here. (Though in two cases I would quibble about which were the original hit versions; I would cite Doris Day rather than Jeri Southern for "When I Fall in Love," and Les Paul & Mary Ford, rather than Eddy Arnold, for "I Really Don't Want to Know.")
I think that, although Anne Murray is generally associated with country singing, she, like Crystal Gayle, can do a good job with traditional popular songs. It helps that (as she says in a quote in the liner notes) she grew up listening to great singers like Patti Page and Jo Stafford do these songs; she clearly knows what they are supposed to sound like, and has a great respect for the songs.
A lot of other reviewers gave this CD 5 stars; I don't go that far, because the performances don't match the originals. But they are pleasant to listen to, and four stars still means it's worth listening to!
Do you like GOOD music?.......2003-09-07

Outstanding children's album.......2005-05-27
All those songs are great, but Anne has obviously put a lot of thought into her selection of songs aimed squarely at children. Why oh why is a great song that illustrates the problems that parents have in answering children's questions - nobody can predict what a child will ask. Another great song is Stars are the windows of heaven - this is one way of answering a particularly awkward question and it's very well done. Apart from Teddy bears picnic, there are two other animal songs (Animal crackers, Inch worm). The album title comes from the chorus of opening track (Hey Daddy).
This is a magnificent children's album that can be enjoyed by adults too.

FINALLY-THE MANY TALENTS OF ANNE MURRAY !.......2006-02-04
Nice mix of covers and originals.......2003-09-27
Some of her other country hits are here, including He thinks I still care (a cover of the George Jones classic She thinks I still care), I just fall in love again, Could I have this dance and Now and forever. Casual British buyers at whom this compilation is aimed probably don't know these songs unless they already have another Anne Murray compilation, in which case they will be paying for several tracks that they already have.
Most but not of the other songs will be familiar to Brits via other versions. These include You've got a friend (James Taylor), Killing me softly (Roberta Flack), Just one look (Hollies - originally an American hit for Doris Troy), Walk right back (Everly brothers), Secret love (a UK hit for Doris Day in the fifties and Kathy Kirby in the sixties), You belong to me (Jo Stafford) and Wayward wind (Frank Ifield - originally an American hit for Gogi Grant).
In its way, this is a fine collection that makes a great introduction to Anne's music for the uninitiated. Personally, I would find an all-covers album more interesting than this mix of covers and originals, but this compilation was not designed for committed fans like me. Every song here can be found elsewhere, though you'd have to buy a lot of Anne's music to get them all any other way.
If you haven't got any of Anne's music and are not familiar with her American hits but enjoy covers, you may find this more appealing than a Best of collection.

Memorable Music.......2005-10-22
This particular CD has many of Anne's most memorable/known tracks - with a few exceptions.
Overall, I would highly recommend this CD to all the Anne Murray fans out there, as well as those who just like good love songs. I would categorize the music as easy listening/light country - if that sounds like something you'd be interested in, give this CD a shot - I think you'll be glad you did!
Unforgettable songs.......2004-12-24
The lovely Snowbird first brought her international fame but all the tracks are tuneful and memorable, like the Kenny Loggins composition Danny's Song and Love Song. Known as a country star, her repertoire included both that style and middle of the road pop.
My favourites here are Snowbird, Danny's Song, Shadows In The Moonlight, You Needed Me (which won her a Grammy Award) and her interpretation of The Monkees' Daydream Believer. Major omissions on this album include Let's Keep It That Way, He Thinks I Still Care (her first country number one), Let's Keep It That Way and her duet with Loggins, Nobody Loves Me Like You Do.
This Greatest Hits CD is perfect for the newcomer to Anne Murray but not comprehensive enough for her devoted fans.

A CD WITH TWO GREAT SONGS.......2004-08-23
Duets album plus Danny's song album.......2003-12-24
The second album, Danny's song, contains five studio tracks followed by five live tracks. To my ears, the five studio tracks are the best on this entire CD. They include Danny's song (one of Anne's own classics), Killing me softly with his song (a song that was written after it's writer had seen a Don McLean concert) and He thinks I still care (a cover of the old George Jones country classic, She thinks I still care, adapted for Anne). The live cuts include versions of songs that Anne had already recorded studio versions of. One of them, Ease your pain, also appears on the Glen Campbell duets album that makes up the other half of this CD.
There is plenty of great music to listen to here, though these are not among the strongest albums that Anne recorded during her long and distinguished career.
