Anne Murray

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
This is probably the songbird's finest release ever, an album that screams quality and class while delivering an understated sound that spans the contemporary adult pop idiom and approaches the hip territory of Bonnie Raitt. Heartfelt ballads like "Highway, Highway" and Jann Arden's "Missing You" will appeal to her core fans, though it's the irresistible Stax/Volt and gospel grooves of "That's The Way It Goes," "Shame on Me," "I Know Too Much," and "Until I Was Loved by You" that best signal the artistic renaissance. Duets with Bryan Adams ("What Would It Take") and Aaron Neville ("That's What My Love Is For") are sleek international calling cards, and the raw edge of Murray's exceptional vocals speak of rediscovered passion and gutsy commitment. --Jeff Bateman

Not exactly a country artist, since her records lack twang, and too casual and intimate to make for a standard-issue MOR pop performer, Anne Murray's phenomenally warm, smooth voice has nevertheless secured a lofty place for her in both categories--and has occasionally brought her into the mainstream (read: traditionally rock and soul dominated) pop arena. If you're not a fan, or much of a country enthusiast, it's her '70s pop hits that'll make the package worthwhile. "Snowbird" is here, as is "You Needed Me." If you are a fan, or are looking for songs that hit only on the country or Canadian charts, there'll be a lot of key stuff missing. Investigate the 3 CD Now and Forever collection. --Gavin McNett

5 out of 5 stars And if I could you know that I would fly away with you.......2007-07-13

Anne Murray has such a beautiful voice. My favorite song on this CD is "Snow Bird." It is such a beautiful melody. Some of my other favorite tracks on it are: "Could I Have This Dance" and "Shadows In The Moonlight." Ms. Murray is such a multi-talented contemporary country singer. It is shame that today's throw-away musicians don't have a tenth of the talent that Anne Murray has. The entire CD is a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars One Song Missing.......2006-08-13

This is a great CD but there is one song missing from this collection. Walk Right Back should be on this CD. It was a wonderful song that she did in the 70's. She actually does it better than The Everly Brothers.

5 out of 5 stars White Girl Gospel.......2007-05-13

Thanks to Anne Murray, there's proof that white girls can raise a strong, warm voice in praise, too. I have happily given copies of this CD to my diversity of friends, and many of them have expressed happy surprise. Contains probably the best rocking version anywhere of "Just a Closer Walk With Thee."

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!.......2007-03-16

I share this music with my patients during Sunday morning group therapy and have always gotten a positive response. Patients who have refused to talk to the nurses and the counselors find themselves wanting to open up and talk about themselves and how they want to work harder on improving their lives. My co-workers will ask me every Sunday "do you have the CD?" and we go about our duties singing along with Anne and praising God.
I cannot adequately describe the joy that listening to Anne Murray singing
God's praises brings to me. I seldom attend church, but I always take the time to play her music on Sunday mornings and commune with the Lord.
Co-workers listening from down the hall will gravitate to our unit just to
listen. Even the hard-core, profanity-driven ones find themselves in a better place, even if it is for a brief moment, when they are listening to
this CD.
Thank you, Lord, and bless you, Anne Murray!

From Amazon.com

Anne Murray, whose singular voice made her a country-pop icon in the 1970s and '80s, returns with a dual-disc set of 16 of her greatest hits, paired with 15 Tin Pan Alley pop standards. While her own signature tunes ("Snowbird," "Danny's Song") withstand time's brutal test in artistry and currency, Murray doesn't fare nearly as well with the pre-World War II tunes. She finds the modern blues heart of "What'll I Do," but she's often sidetracked by cheesy arrangements (the Dixieland treatment of "After You've Gone" is particularly onerous), and ultimately the collection fails to engage. Such hoary songs as "Dream a Little Dream of Me" and "You Made Me Love You" are too quaint and schmaltzy for a woman who came of age in the 1970s. Unlike the great Rosemary Clooney, who could infuse the most shopworn classic with new meaning, overall, Murray lacks the emotional resonance or experience in her voice to convey authenticity. Her corduroy alto remains a thing of wonder, however, and may make even her most casual fans yearn to hear it employed on a stellar album of contemporary material. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Something for everyone!.......2007-05-17

This Anne Murray collection has something for just about every music fan-all of her biggest hits are here, along with some wonderful standards. Give this collection a listen-I think you'll like what you hear.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2006-11-03

Anne sings some old standards that I can listen to over and over.
I bought this CD set because of a few of the songs on it, but I
discovered that there was more here for me to like, and that
Anne Murray is much better an artist than I had realized.

4 out of 5 stars More standards from the Canadian songbird.......2006-09-04

At the outset, I've got to say that I am a very big Anne Murray fan. I, for one, though, am itching for an Anne Murray album of new material. The last such album came in 1996-- ten years ago.

Whether by her own choice or by commercial realities, Anne has released only pop, country, gospel, and Christmas standards albums since then. At this point, standards albums have flooded the market. Though Anne has contributed to that, there is a little doubt that she has a fondness for the material-- and that she is especially qualified to interpret it.

For those who liked Croonin', What a Wonderful World, What a Wonderful Christmas, and Country Croonin'-- you will also like this album. The arrangements, vocals, and overall quality are in line with those previous albums. If you haven't bought any of these, the one that stands out is the first-- Croonin'.

This album, then, is not one to surprise. Of the songs, my favorite is What I'll Do. Anne's version of Over The Rainbow is one that stands out. I also like As Time Goes By, Twilight Time, and My Buddy. The big band arrangement of After You've Gone has generated a difference of opinion-- count me in the group that likes it.

In the end, this is a good album, but not a great nor memorable one. Overall, I give it 4 stars. On a tougher comparison to other Anne Murray albums, I'd rate it a 3.

3 out of 5 stars Greatest hits plus a mixed bag of American standards .......2006-02-07

Purchase this 2-CD set for the first disc, which features sterling remasters of most if not all of her greatest hits. The second disc holds far less appeal. Murrary warbles pre-WWII ditties like "What'll I Do" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Problem is, she doesn't have the voice, the reach or the emotional resonance to perform most of them. With maybe two exceptions, they are performed in the most perfunctory manner; they sound like throwaways, whether she intended them to or not. If you thought this was going to be a sequel to CROONIN', her wonderful collection of post-WWII standards, you will be sadly let down. If you want to hear those songs modernized and done right, listen to Harry Nilsson's interpretations, available on both the original album A LITTLE TOUCH OF SCHMILSSON and the 2-CD Australian set, THE BEST OF HARRY NILSSON (and this includes SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW, which was cut from the original album).

5 out of 5 stars REAL DANCE TUNES FOR "COUPLES"..........2006-01-05

This 2CD set just arrived - have played the first CD four times, just love it!!! Real dance numbers for couples who remember what it's like to dance "together" - back in the days when a guy held a gal and got around the dance floor. Anne Murray is a great singer and I go way back with her albums. On this her new CD "All of Me" she does wonderful arrangements of all those standards and classics. Just put in on, grab your partner, dance up a storm, or just sit and listen, or join in with Anne, harmonize away, takes you back!!! I recommend this CD to folks that are older than baby boomers - mostly because of the first CD - but the younger folks, they too could learn to love these tunes, so many new artits today have "seen the light" and are doing old the old standby songs, with great success!

AS PART OF THIS SHOW, SHE SANG SOME COUNTRY SONGS FROM HER COUNTRY ALBUM. MY WIFE, A COUNTRY FAN, WAS THRILLED !

WHEN WE RETURNED HOME, WE FOUND ANNE'S COUNTRY ALBUM ONLINE AND ORDERED IT. WE ARE BOTH ENJOY LISTENING TO THE CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Queen of Country-Pop can regain her throne !.......2006-06-25

Country-Pop fans are in for a treat with this 2 disc set which begins with the great "Help Me Make it Through the Night", interpreted by Anne with raw emotion and a great arrangement. Make no mistake, this is Country Pop at its best. "Cryin the Blues" and "You were Always on my Mind" are standouts, but the real show stopper , amazingly , is "I Fall to Pieces". Anne makes it her own and it is just wonderful, full of longing and heartache but done in a surprisingly (and effective) uptempo manner. The song doesn't compete with the original;it is remade by Anne in a totally different fashion and in my opinion is as great as Patsy's version. "Can't Help Falling in Love" is stunning, and the duet with Vince Gill "Let it Be Me" is the very best version of that song I have ever heard. There are so many standouts that it is hard to mention them all. "For The Good Times" is treated with tender emotion, and will bring you close to tears. "That's The Way Love Goes" is pure country done in Anne style-it could have been a huge hit for her. "Loving Arms" is another breathtaking gem. Her voice is as smooth as silk on the cut. "Me and Bobby McGee" is done in an original fashion and has a sweet , melodic ending. In essence, Anne proves why she is the most succesful female crossover artist of all time. The snobs in Nashville need to take notes.

5 out of 5 stars She's Done It Again.......2005-03-12

What a voice! Anne Murray is one of the few unique vocalists out there. Few people can record versions of hit songs that actually sound better than the original, but Anne can do so. Cheers to a vocalist who has respected her instrument over the years and hasn't ruined it by abusing it with drinks or smokes. So glad she is covering terrific classic material these days, songs deserving of her voice.

5 out of 5 stars Anne's wonderful tribute to the 50's........2007-02-22

This cd of 50's standards sung by the Legendary Anne Murray is a fantastic set of music... many have done some of the songs on this cd and basically some haven't brought anything new to them, instead of trying to do copy versions of them, the arrangements here are different and some of the songs are given a nice country tempo, and Anne's beautiful voice just shines on this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Old standarts done beautifully.......2006-08-25

Anne Murray has chosen a group of well known standarts from the American Music Box and deliverd them with a wonderful rendition. Strognly recommended whether you are Ms. Murray's fan or not as long as you enjoy music that made America listen in the 40's and 50's.

5 out of 5 stars Anne remembers the fifties but not rock'n'roll.......2005-05-31

When Anne realized that her hit-making days were over, she decided to record an album of covers. Originally, Anne had no particular theme in mind but she found that a lot of her favorite songs dated from the fifties so she decided to focus exclusively on that decade, although you will notice that she has (at least on this album) largely ignored the rock'n'roll revolution, though she has included Born to be with you (Chordettes).

Thus, the album features covers of classic songs by such great singers as Patti Page (Old Cape Cod, Allegheny moon), Gogi Grant (Wayward wind), Peggy Lee (Fever), Doris Day (Secret love), Jo Stafford (You belong to me, Make love to me), Julie London (Cry me a river), Rosemary Clooney (Hey there), De Castro sisters (Teach me tonight), Eddy Arnold (I really don't want to know (Eddy Arnold) and Perry Como (Wanted). Also here is When I fall in love, which was originally an American hit for Doris Day but which has since become a bigger hit for other artists in different countries.

True love (originally by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly) features Anne singing with the album's producer. Apparently, Anne originally asked Elton John if he'd like to sing with her but he said he didn't have time. Within a few months, he'd recorded the song with Kiki Dee and they had an international hit with it.

Anne's performances on all these songs are brilliant. If you buy the album because you enjoy Anne's music, you may discover a whole new world of fifties songs that you didn't know about. And if you buy it because of the songs, you'll discover what a fantastic singer Anne is.

4 out of 5 stars Good renditions of some old familiar songs.......2005-02-24

Of course, as a 50s music fan, I am familiar with, and in almost all cases very fond of, all the songs in this collection. And while in most cases I prefer the original versions of the songs, I have to say that I like Anne Murray's renditions as well.

One thing I like about the presentation is that there is a listing of the original hit versions of all the songs here. (Though in two cases I would quibble about which were the original hit versions; I would cite Doris Day rather than Jeri Southern for "When I Fall in Love," and Les Paul & Mary Ford, rather than Eddy Arnold, for "I Really Don't Want to Know.")

I think that, although Anne Murray is generally associated with country singing, she, like Crystal Gayle, can do a good job with traditional popular songs. It helps that (as she says in a quote in the liner notes) she grew up listening to great singers like Patti Page and Jo Stafford do these songs; she clearly knows what they are supposed to sound like, and has a great respect for the songs.

A lot of other reviewers gave this CD 5 stars; I don't go that far, because the performances don't match the originals. But they are pleasant to listen to, and four stars still means it's worth listening to!

5 out of 5 stars Do you like GOOD music?.......2003-09-07

This is a group of songs that were some of Anne Murray's favorites when she was growing up in the fifties, and for my money, each is a new and improved version. As a professional musician, I am just SO impressed by the wonderful arrangements, terrific instrumental performances, and, of course, the beautiful and classy voice of Anne Murray that make this a CD you will listen to over and over. And there are so many songs on it that you won't get tired of hearing them. Most are ballads. I dare you to try to be stressed out after listening to this CD for even a short time. My cassette player ate the Croonin' tape and I was in absolute withdrawal until I purchased the CD. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars awesome album.......2005-07-31

I grew up listening to this album on cassette. I still love the songs and can't wait to get this album again and play it for my neices and nephews when they come along.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding children's album.......2005-05-27

Adults can enjoy this too for despite the cover picture and the album title, there are some really great songs here. Some are covers of songs that can be on standard albums yet they are not out of place here - these include Hi lili ho lo, You are my sunshine, Open up your heart, I can see clearly now and What a wonderful world. Teddy bears picnic can also be found on standard albums but really belongs here.

All those songs are great, but Anne has obviously put a lot of thought into her selection of songs aimed squarely at children. Why oh why is a great song that illustrates the problems that parents have in answering children's questions - nobody can predict what a child will ask. Another great song is Stars are the windows of heaven - this is one way of answering a particularly awkward question and it's very well done. Apart from Teddy bears picnic, there are two other animal songs (Animal crackers, Inch worm). The album title comes from the chorus of opening track (Hey Daddy).

This is a magnificent children's album that can be enjoyed by adults too.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY-THE MANY TALENTS OF ANNE MURRAY !.......2006-02-04

This is the finest Anne Murray collection ever, especially for new fans. While this collection contains her many huge hits which are now classics ("Snowbird", "You Needed Me", "Could I Have this Dance"), her famous remakes ("Daydream Believer", "You've got a Friend"), it also includes some lesser-known, yet equally impressive, gems. Case and point : "Blue Finger Lou" showcases Anne's great vocal range with an up-tempo, toe-tapping, Vegas-style slick rendition. Her sweet, innocent side is in full view on the early cut "Destiny". She rocks out on "Just One Look" a gritty take on the old classic and her voice amazes-it blows away any preconceived stereotype you might have about Anne's music. She is pure pop with "Walk Right Back"-a much superior version than the original if you ask me. There are some Country cuts ("He Thinks I Still Care") and the surprisingly delicious Euro-technopop "Without You" with electronic drums and a very catchy beat-again not your stereotype of Anne's music. The collection closes with Anne as the ultimate Crooner with her take on such ditties as "Secret Love" and "Cry Me a River". The woman is amazing-she can sing in any style, and still come off as being truly genuine. It is a crime that Anne is not a bigger star than she is. Radio is missing out !

5 out of 5 stars Nice mix of covers and originals.......2003-09-27

This British compilation contains some of Anne's American country hits together with some covers of songs made famous by others. Anne only had a few (mostly minor) hits in Britain - Snowbird, Destiny, You needed me and Daydream believer (a cover of a Monkees hit)- and they are all here.

Some of her other country hits are here, including He thinks I still care (a cover of the George Jones classic She thinks I still care), I just fall in love again, Could I have this dance and Now and forever. Casual British buyers at whom this compilation is aimed probably don't know these songs unless they already have another Anne Murray compilation, in which case they will be paying for several tracks that they already have.

Most but not of the other songs will be familiar to Brits via other versions. These include You've got a friend (James Taylor), Killing me softly (Roberta Flack), Just one look (Hollies - originally an American hit for Doris Troy), Walk right back (Everly brothers), Secret love (a UK hit for Doris Day in the fifties and Kathy Kirby in the sixties), You belong to me (Jo Stafford) and Wayward wind (Frank Ifield - originally an American hit for Gogi Grant).

In its way, this is a fine collection that makes a great introduction to Anne's music for the uninitiated. Personally, I would find an all-covers album more interesting than this mix of covers and originals, but this compilation was not designed for committed fans like me. Every song here can be found elsewhere, though you'd have to buy a lot of Anne's music to get them all any other way.

If you haven't got any of Anne's music and are not familiar with her American hits but enjoy covers, you may find this more appealing than a Best of collection.

5 out of 5 stars Memorable Music.......2005-10-22

I've loved Anne Murray's music for as long as I can remember - her amazing voice, great lyrics, and memorable tunes tend to stick with you.

This particular CD has many of Anne's most memorable/known tracks - with a few exceptions.

Overall, I would highly recommend this CD to all the Anne Murray fans out there, as well as those who just like good love songs. I would categorize the music as easy listening/light country - if that sounds like something you'd be interested in, give this CD a shot - I think you'll be glad you did!

4 out of 5 stars Unforgettable songs.......2004-12-24

This may not be the Canadian songstress' most exhaustive hits collection but it provides great listening pleasure. Anne specialised in simple but moving pop and country songs that made her popular in The USA and worldwide.

The lovely Snowbird first brought her international fame but all the tracks are tuneful and memorable, like the Kenny Loggins composition Danny's Song and Love Song. Known as a country star, her repertoire included both that style and middle of the road pop.

My favourites here are Snowbird, Danny's Song, Shadows In The Moonlight, You Needed Me (which won her a Grammy Award) and her interpretation of The Monkees' Daydream Believer. Major omissions on this album include Let's Keep It That Way, He Thinks I Still Care (her first country number one), Let's Keep It That Way and her duet with Loggins, Nobody Loves Me Like You Do.

This Greatest Hits CD is perfect for the newcomer to Anne Murray but not comprehensive enough for her devoted fans.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to new fans.......2006-06-25

If you do not know much about Anne Murray and love simple, touching ballads this is a great introduction into the world of Anne Murray. All the songs here are adult contemporary often straddling the line (perfectly I might add) between pop and country. The most memorable cuts are "What's Forever For", "It Should have Been Easy" , "Just to Feel this Love from You" and "Beginning to Feel like Home". This compilation has a melancholy feel to it and it reminds me of the feeling you get at Automn just before the advent of Winter. A beautiful effort all around.

Very nice easy listening. Any Anne Murray fan would enjoy this.

3 out of 5 stars She does it again.......2000-06-14

5 out of 5 stars Incredible and way ahead of its time.......2006-06-23

Anne Murray and Glen Campbell had worked together on Glen's TV show, and it was just natural for them to record a duet album. The results are brilliant. Their voices blend perfectly without one of the stars trying to outshine or outsing the other. The album opens with "You're Easy to Love" and that is just how you will feel about this highly underrated album. Every song on this album could have been a hit-"United We Stand" is quite engaging. "My Ecstasy" is particularly brilliant. Why aren't there more vocal performances like this these days ? As a bonus you get the equally brilliant and Grammy winning album "Danny's Song" featuring the smash hit title song penned by Kenny Loggins. You will also find the inspiring "One Day I Walk" (penned by fellow Canadian Bruce Cockburn), the dreamy "Let Sunshine Have it's Day" (this song will transport you into a world of vocal longing and of hope). Finally the quite touching "I'll be Home" perfectly encapsulates all the emotions one feels when longing for home. These two albums are brilliant on their own but together they make an indispensable companion to any collection of serious music lovers.

4 out of 5 stars A CD WITH TWO GREAT SONGS.......2004-08-23

IN MY OPINION, "CANADIAN SUNSET" WAS THE GREATEST SONG OF THE ENTIRE TWENTIETH CENTURY. AND THE BEST VOCAL VERSION OF THAT SONG IS THE ONE DONE BY ANNE MURRAY AND GLEN CAMPBELL. THEY ARE ACCOMPANIED BY A GREAT SOUNDING ORCHESTRA AND BOTH OF THEIR VOICES BLEND WELL TOGETHER. THE OTHER GREAT SONG ON THIS CD IS THE MEDLEY "I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER / BY THE TIME I GET TO PHOENIX". THESE TWO LOVE SONGS BLEND SO WELL TOGETHER. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS CD TO ANYONE.

5 out of 5 stars Duets album plus Danny's song album.......2003-12-24

The first album is a collection of duets with Glen Campbell (a particularly interesting combination of voices) and features several interesting songs. The medley of By the time I get to Phoenix (sung by Glen) and I say a little prayer (sung by Anne) is clever, but it doesn't quite work for me. The remainder of the album is much better, including fine versions of Canadian sunset, United we stand, Ease your pain and Let me be the one.

The second album, Danny's song, contains five studio tracks followed by five live tracks. To my ears, the five studio tracks are the best on this entire CD. They include Danny's song (one of Anne's own classics), Killing me softly with his song (a song that was written after it's writer had seen a Don McLean concert) and He thinks I still care (a cover of the old George Jones country classic, She thinks I still care, adapted for Anne). The live cuts include versions of songs that Anne had already recorded studio versions of. One of them, Ease your pain, also appears on the Glen Campbell duets album that makes up the other half of this CD.

There is plenty of great music to listen to here, though these are not among the strongest albums that Anne recorded during her long and distinguished career.
