5 out of 5 stars One of my most favorite albums.......2003-08-06

I first heard Cindy more than 22 years ago (ulp!) and have owned this recording on cassette, LP, and now CD -- and now it also lives on my iPod. I still listen to songs from this album at least once a week.

Quietly brilliant guitar playing and excellent lyrics. I only wish she toured to California more often!

5 out of 5 stars A FIRST ALBUM THAT HAS GENTLE CONFIDENCE..........2002-08-30

Cindy Kallet has long been one of my favorite singer-songwriters - finding the cd re-releases of her first two albums here on Amazon offers me a great opportunity to extol the talents and virtues of this wonderful artist. This, her first album, instead of being a rough, naïve effort by an unconfident newcomer, comes across as a polished, secure work by a seasoned performer.

From the very first bars of the opening track, `Nantucket sound', the listener is made keenly aware that there is something very special to be savored here. Kallet's voice is full and assured - there's a power and energy contained within in that is living and breathing, but always in control. Both her voice and her lyrics are capable of incredible ranges of emotion and feeling and subject matter - but one is never left with the impression of being bludgeoned. The life that Kallet has lived and seen and experienced in the northeast - on Martha's Vineyard, in Vermont and, later, on the Maine coast - comes alive in her music. Some of her songs are so lovingly steeped in the musical traditions of this part of the country that one would swear they are a hundred years old - and yet there is also a vital `newness' to them, carried over from the singer's soul.

Cindy's guitar work is stellar as well - she is one of the most accomplished and tasteful finger-style players I've ever had the pleasure to hear. Like her writing and singing, her playing is confident but never `showy' - in every instance it makes the perfect accompaniment to her songs (and there's an instrumental included here as well, `Big Dark's fancy', that will make jaws drop).

Besides dealing with the expected subjects - the sea and the natural beauty of the region - Cindy's songs also delve into more personal issues. Relationships - both romantic and friendships - are treated with the respect and importance they deserve, without ever drifting into the maudlin. Personal growth is another subject that holds great importance to her - several of her songs (both on this recording and others) are both reflective of her own learning experiences and encouraging to others as they walk their own roads in life. Our mistreatment and disregard for our environment concerns her deeply as well - the song `Roll to the river' here addresses the building of homes in ever-increasing numbers encroaching on the ocean shore. She has a deep respect for her fellow human beings, as well as a deep love for her family and friends - the things that hurt them hurt her as well, and the things that give them joy are her treasures.

The arrangements here are simple - very much like hearing Cindy play in person. She is joined on vocal harmonies on some of the tracks by her sister Lisa and another long-time friend and collaborator, Ellen Epstein (Cindy has worked with Ellen and Michael Cicone in a vocal trio, releasing two great recordings, ANGELS IN DARING and HUMANS, over the years). The strength that carries the tunes on this album lies in Cindy's songwriting, her expressive voice and her tasteful guitar playing. This album was originally released on vinyl in 1981 on the small (but vital) label Folk-Legacy, lovingly operated for many fruitful years by Sandy and Caroline Paton - their devotion to music has benefited artists and listeners alike, and the release of this recording on cd is further example of their dedication and hard work.

Cindy has additional recordings available -- CINDY KALLET 2, a fine follow-up to WORKING ON WINGS TO FLY, is available through Amazon; her 1989 release DREAMING DOWN A QUIET LINE is a masterpiece (I know Cindy is modest, but I can think of no other apt description for this disc); a duet recording with famed Maine singer-songwriter Gordon Bok, appropriately entitled NEIGHBORS; another solo album, THIS WAY HOME, released in 2000; and an album for `parents and kids growing up', LEAVE THE CAKE IN THE MAILBOX.

Cindy Kallet is an artist who, throughout her career, has continually produced thoughtful, beautiful and relevant music. It's a blessing to her fans (both long-time and newly joined) that she has found a way to turn her concerns, her loves and her fears, through her wonderful creativity, into music that speaks to us, that moves us as much today as when it was recorded - her art and her subjects are timeless ones.

5 out of 5 stars Love this album.......2002-05-08

A friend made a cassette of this for me back when I was in college, about twenty years ago--great that it's out on CD now. It's nice relaxing music, great for those times when you're sitting in your car wishing you were sitting in a boat.

5 out of 5 stars Compilation release.......2005-11-24

This release is a remastering of the two previous releases: Sweet Power of Song and On Wings of Song. Both original CDs are still available if you hunt for them. The original releases do have the texts included in the booklets (lamented by a previous reviewer of this compilation release). The lack of text is not a problem for me. I just listen to these incredible singers. I don't need to read what they are singing.

If you even slightly enjoy listening to the soprano voice, you will love these two luscious singers. Soprano duets are among my favorite classical music selections. Lott's clear, strong voice rings with authority and joy. Murray provides perfect harmony and occasional counterpoint.

I prefer the first disk (Sweet Power of Song) because it is more balanced and seems to represent the sopranos' favorite selections. However, disk 2 (On Wings of Song) has Rossini's delightful Cat Duet which is worth the price of both CDs as performed by this amazing duo.

Whether you buy this compilation set or the individual releases, I promise that you will love them and keep them near your player all the time.

4 out of 5 stars Text Translations Please!.......2002-01-11

Musically, I give this double CD set 5 stars. I love the warm soprano of Felicity Lott and the beautiful mezzo of Ann Murray. They always are a pleasure to listen to, each on their own, and together, they make music that is, more than simply beautiful and technically impeccable, but truly a joy to listen to. It adds so much to musical enjoyment to understand what the lyrics are, however, so rather than buying this double CD set, for which the text translations have been stingily omitted by the label, I would recommend buying each of them separately. I bought this CD set not realizing that one of the two CDS is one that I had bought previously, and been enjoying for many years. It is entitled "On Wings of Song" and the texts and the translations are all included. I highly recommend buying it. I don't know under what title the other CD might have been released. If you are so fluent in foreign languages that the lack of translation does not bother you, then I would highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Great close to a great music career........2003-11-17

I knew that this CD was being released, but I hadn't realized it was their last till after I bought it. With that said, now I look back and see that it does indeed cover their career from 3-chord pop/punk band to a more sentimental sound, not unlike some mid-Radiohead.

The first song is my favorite of the new ones, "Scared of Me". I just love the lyrics as well as the vocals. Don't get me wrong, I'm definately a fan of the earlier Siletta punkish vocals, but I think Eric Balmer really comes into his own with this stuff. Honestly, I think they should have probably dropped the Plankeye name when Siletta and Ferry left. It's a shame that the two replacements (can't remember their names) only did one full album, "Strange Exchange"...although I'm not sure if they played on "Relocation" and just didn't get band credit.

But who cares? It's a great album. I'm not too fond of the new versions, but they have their place. It's fun to re-record old favorites.

5 out of 5 stars compilation contemplation . . ........2002-08-15

5 stars? I really would've only given the cd 4.5 (or maybe 4.25) if I could've, but it is definitely better than a mere 4. First of all, the first seven songs are "new" (though Plankeye fans will know that two of the seven songs are simply remixes of "Goodbye" and "Bicycle"), and each of the following twelve songs is taken from one of Plankeye's first five releases. Let me first tackle the issue of the "Bicycle" remix. Now personally, I absolutely love the original "Bicycle" from "Commonwealth." And I was weary at first that Eric and Louis would tackle the song without Scott's vocals (which make the song what it is, I believe). And at first I hated the new mix, skipping it every time. But . . . and there always is a but, I must admit that is has grown immeasurably on me. I still like the original better, but now thoroughly enjoy the new mix as well. As for the remix of "Goodbye" . . . stick with the original (Track 19) - it is a million times better. But looking at the cd as a whole, the new songs are great ("Captain" especially). For those who liked "Relocation," some of the new songs mirror its tendencies. Likewise with those who enjoyed "Strange Exchange" more. But all in all, this is truly a must have cd for any Plankeye fan, if not for the new version of "Bicycle," than for the five new songs themselves. And finally, for anyone not familiar with Plankeye, this is the perfect avenue for trying them out (before commiting to one of their previous albums over another). From "Scared" and "Open House" to "Chemicals and Sleep," there is a full spattering of songs both post-Scott era and during his run - all of them good. Thanks and happy listening.

4 out of 5 stars Three Hits and a Mess.......2004-01-06

This CD contains four new works, all by Canadians, performed by what must be one of the premier piano trios in Canada, the Gryphon Trio.

The only composer represented here that I'd ever heard of before is Kelly-Marie Murphy (b. 1964). She has become in the past few years one of Canada's most-played composers and with good reason. Her 'Give Me Phoenix Wings to Fly,' played here, is a 13-minute, three-movement blockbuster. Inspired by the phoenix myth, and specifically by Keats's 'But when I am consumed in this fire/Give me new Phoenix wings to fly at my desire,' and also by a few lines from Robert Graves: 'Blow on a dead man's embers/And a live flame will start,' the music does not attempt a program per se but there are plenty of flickering passages, and places where one can imagine flames erupting ferociously. Mostly, though, the piece can be enjoyed as absolute music. Murphy's rhythmic sense is unfailing invigorating, if subtle. (And it must be said that the Gryphons manage incredible ensemble with the piece's more complex cross-rhythms.) Although not recognizably tonal much of the time, there do seem to be moments of tonal centering, particularly during the piece's more restful passages. The work is notable for its continually surprising eventfulness. There is a good deal of solo work for the three musicians and each is virtuosic. I particularly gasped at the cellist's quasi-cadenza followed by a manic flight by the pianist at the beginning of III. Wow! In looking on the Internet I see that the Gryphons have played this piece all over. Huzzah to that! Now if some other piano trios would take up this piece . . .

'Old Photographs,' by Christos Hatzis (b. 1953, a professor at the University of Toronto) is a piano trio extracted from a much larger multimedia work called 'Constantinople,' which is still apparently in the process of being written; it will ultimately involve mezzo-soprano, Arabic singer, violin, cello, piano, and electronic audio as well as dancers, film projections, and stage set. This piano trio, however, stands on its own and in its 10+ minutes explores in a Romantic/Impressionist/jazz idiom a nostalgia that is palpable, certainly appropriate for its name, 'Old Photographs.' It begins with a slow and serenely beautiful piano solo, eventually joined by the violin and cello, that would not be amiss in something by Bill Evans or Denny Zeitlin, but about five minutes into the piece a Piazzollan tango emerges (and so much better than other non-Latin composers' efforts I've heard recently [the limp tango in Thomas Adès's 'Powder Her Face' comes to mind]). This sultry tango will demand you look for a dance partner. And toward the end are some piano jazz licks that remind one of that earlier Torontonian composer, Oscar Peterson. An entirely likable piece, this.

'Piano Trio No. 2, by Gary Kulesha (b. 1954, another composition professor at Toronto) is cast in the usual fast-slow-fast movements. Although generally tonal, there are occasional quarter-tones or bending of tones, asymmetric rhythms and some Webernian fragmentation. The overall impression is one of spontaneity, but closer inspection reveals a tight construction in the outer movements. Rhythmic vitality informs both outer movements. The first is rhythmically obsessive, as if it was trying to work its way out of a dilemma. It ends with almost inaudible piano and then strings asking an 'unanswered question.' The middle movement is rhapsodic and unapologetically melancholic. The recurrent unison passages in the third movement sound to me like a Beat poet reciting a bop epic. The whole thing ends in a exciting flurry.

The only disappointment here is " and the masks evoke..." by Chan Ka Nin (b. 1949, you guessed it, he teaches at the University of Toronto). At almost 18 minutes it overstays its welcome. The pretentious program supplied by the composer goes on about 'people whose culture has been suppressed' and how the piece 'pays tribute to those who, despite the repression they have suffered, rise tranquilly over their obstacles.' That is as may be, but the music itself is, to my ears, a lot of sound effects and noodling that goes nowhere and doesn't convey much along the way. There are some electronic sounds (from a theremin?; the composer has a degree in electrical engineering, we're told) and they're actually rather interesting. And there are some momentarily interesting drumming sounds in the low piano and cello.

The Gryphon Trio is a Canadian group consisting of violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon, cellist Roman Borys, and pianist Jamie Parker. They are excellent individually and as an ensemble, and sound to have really gotten into the heart of all these pieces which are, after all, being given their recording premières here. Analekta give them lifelike sound.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction.......2002-11-07

...I have some of her later albums, but only the live album from which a couple of tracks are extracted.

Of course, I had heard of Nanci some time ago, but only heard her on a Frances Black album, which featured a numbder of Nanci songs.

Unlike other reviewers, I found this to be a helpful album to buy. It proves to me that Nanci was great from the start. Every song has that touch of class which shows she reaches a consistently high standard. I will now have to buy the three studio albums featured on this compilation.

I'm fast running out of money, thanks to Nanci - so my Christmas list is chock full of wanted albums by her.

4 out of 5 stars As it says an introduction.......2002-03-26

Sure the selection is based on tracks that have been compiled before, but it's not designed for Nanci's fans who've got most of her albums. As a Nanci fan I'd much rather see this sort of compilation than yet another greatest hits which has one or (if you're lucky)two new songs on it. Save the new songs for the new albums

2 out of 5 stars Wings to Fly & A Place to Be: An Itrod.......2001-03-31

I was disapointed after going through this CD and 20th Century Masters. I have always found Nancy's music to be very humorous, uplifting and honest. That the same tittle songs, should remain on one cut after another is extremely disheartening. If I could find the CD of Nancy's, with music that hasn't already won my loyalty.....I'ld buy it. When reviewing this and a couple other cuts. I was hoping to find something new and enlightening. I guess I am left waiting. However, I haven't given up, Nancy is that good! I hope this review inspires here to continue her work. For the time being, I will keep watching and waitng.
