A Hundred Miles or More carries the subtitle A Collection, and what a curious collection it is--cuts from soundtracks, side projects, and tribute albums, plus guest duets on other artists' albums and five previously unreleased tracks. In other words, this is a collection of Alison Krauss performances that have never appeared on an Alison Krauss album, though it holds together better than such a grab-bag approach might suggest. Highlights such as her duet with Brad Paisley on "Whiskey Lullaby" and her a cappella rendition of "Down to the River to Pray" from O Brother, Where Art Thou? will be familiar to most Krauss fans, though it's doubtful that many share her infatuation with retro rocker John Waite (with whom she revives his "Missing You" and duets on a cover of Don Williams's "Lay Down Beside Me."). Other projects represented range from Disney to the Chieftains to the Louvin Brothers (she duets with James Taylor on their "How's the World Treating You." There's minimal contribution from her Union Station band--making this a solo release by default--and little information to indicate whether the previously unreleased tracks were outtakes from earlier releases or recently recorded for this one. --Don McLeese More Alison Krauss

Now That I've Found You: A Collection |
Album Description
"A Hundred Miles or More: A Collection" is comprised of 16 tracks, highlighting Alison Krauss's career outside of her traditional releases with longtime band Union Station. The album features Krauss's collaboration with John Waite on the single "Missing You," as well as Krauss's contributions to film soundtracks, including the Oscar-nominated songs "The Scarlet Tide" and "You Will Be My Ain True Love," written for the motion picture "Cold Mountain," and "Down to the River to Pray" from the film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Known for her collaborations, Krauss also includes several duets in the collection such as the 2003 hit with Brad Paisley, "Whiskey Lullaby," and her duet with James Taylor for the tribute album "Livin', Lovin', Losin': Songs of the Louvin Brothers," "How's the World Treating You." The collection debuts five new songs: "You're Just a Country Boy," "Jacob's Dream," "Simple Love," "Lay Down Beside Me," and "Away Down the River," all of which feature Krauss as a producer.Customer Reviews:

Jimmy Buffett may have made his millions, but that doesn't mean that he has eased up on his workload. After releasing 33 albums, mounting grueling annual tours, and fashioning an entire industry and lifestyle out of his signature song "Margaritaville," Buffett trots out this two-CD collection. Yet, Meet Me in Magaritaville, which spans 30 years, isn't merely a retread of his long, storied career. Buffett has written two new songs for the package and re-recorded six alternative versions of fan favorites (including a moving version of "The Captain and the Kid," which he included for his ailing father, who died shortly after the album's release). He's also added two new cover songs--a spicy bossa nova version of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talking" and the Beach Boys' "Sail on Sailor"--as well four live tracks, which shows the singer at his best, conjuring up his own Yuppie Atlantis, an idyllic place where no one has to wear shoes, the sun is always shining, the bar never closes, and Junior Mints are always available at every cinema. A must-have collection for every Parrothead (or aspiring Parrothead), if only for Buffett's track-by-track descriptions. --Jaan UhelszkiCustomer Reviews:

A poll-winning fiddler since her teens, Alison Krauss was an established bluegrass star when her label persuaded her to step out from her usual projects with Union Station, her crack band, and sanction this compilation of various band and solo guest performances. The ploy worked, yielding a wonderful, odds-beating crossover hit with Krauss's cover of "Baby, Now That I've Found You," a carousing late-'60s pop chant transformed into a delicate, vulnerable declaration of love. Focusing on Krauss's lovely, yearning soprano, the track elevated the musician above her resolutely democratic role in her quintet, catapulting Krauss to the biggest bluegrass success story in over 30 years. Krauss has stayed true to her bluegrass roots, as well as to Union Station, but this cross-section of contemporary bluegrass songs, joyous gospel, and canny rock covers testifies to the young artist's luminous appeal. --Sam SutherlandCustomer Reviews:

This double CD collects not only Brother Ray's best-known '50s and '60s singles, but some choice semi-obscurities (the 1953 jump blues "Mess Around," his 1959 cover of Louis Jordan's "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'") that earn their places next to "What'd I Say" and "I Can't Stop Loving You." The man's originality and infectious feeling bleed through on each of these 36 tracks, whether he's transforming "One Mint Julep" or "America the Beautiful" or collaborating (separately) with Willie Nelson and Chaka Khan. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

As a superstar who's revered by both the young country audience and traditionalists, Alan Jackson is at his finest when he's steers clear of trifles like "Chattahoochie" and takes those younger fans to school. Here he does just that by paying respects to Hank ("Midnight in Montgomery"), swearing allegiance to George Jones ("Don't Rock the Jukebox"), and calling out all those newcomers who've decided it's time to get twangy now that country's hot ("Gone Country"). All of it pales next to "Here in the Real World," however, as perfect a honky-tonk weeper as mainstream Nashville has produced in 30 years. --David CantwellCustomer Reviews:

Anyone who is still clueless about what a great singer Ronnie Dunn is need only grab this second greatest-hits package from Brooks & Dunn, a 17-song compilation that skims the commercial high points from the duo's 1998-2004 period. Dunn, the quintessential balladeer, soars on honky-tonk laments and reminiscences like "Red Dirt Road" and "How Long Gone," and on full-throated romantic plaints like "That's What She Gets for Loving Me" and "It's Getting Better All the Time." His sidekick, the underrated guitarist, utility singer, and all-around dynamo Kix Brooks, also gets his moment to shine on a marvelous '60s-style, 18-wheeler ditty called "Independent Trucker," one of three new cuts included here. --Bob AllenCustomer Reviews:

and mid 80's. His incredible deep baritone voice + the wonderfully
arranged melodies scored hit after hit. During those days I collected
each and every LP launched on the market because, besides the hits,
all other songs were beautiful as well. Like so many other great C&W
artists of the 70's and 80's he stopped having success around '89 when
producers decided to change country music into pop music and struggle
for the Hot 100. That was the end of 3 full decades of authentic C&W
music. A real pity!
My opinion.......2007-06-11
My favourite though, has got to be 'You're My Best Friend". In this Don uses the soft gentleness of his voice to tell of his friendship with his wife.
There are many of his great songs also, I'm Just A Country Boy - Tulsa Time - Good Ole Boys Like Me and Listen To The Radio mixed with some that I hadn't heard before. Don sings sad and heartbreaking songs without being morbid.
All in all, it is a good mix of great country songs from one of the best in the business. Hard to beleive he's just turned 68.

Does Jerry's career the justice it deserves.......2006-05-13
Jerry started his career with some immensely successful rockabilly sides. He was the only true competitor to one Elvis Presley. Lewis could have gone in to history as the King of Rock & Roll if it weren't for his highly controversial marriage to 13 year old kin. Because R&R was marketed to kids radio stations refused to play his music once the scandal got out. This chain of events turned out to be a curse and a blessing at the same time. Although it slowed down his career it did push Jerry into country recordings. As it turned out this is were his true strength lied.
This taken into account the decision to include only a hand full of his Sun material is completely justified. It highlights only his biggest hits for the label before moving on to his Mercury of the sixties and seventies. The first of these selections "What's Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser Out Of Me)" immediately illustrates this is a much more edgy and mature Lewis. Gone are the dance crazes of "Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On" and gone is the teen romance of "High School Confidential", only to be replaced by tales of a man struggling to get through his life. These are songs of a man who realizes life isn't as clear cut as it seems in High School. Titles as "She Still Comes Around (To Love What's Left Of Me)" and "One Has My Name (The Other Has My Heart)" speak for itself on that matter.
One could argue that a single disc could never cover the essential Jerry Lee Lewis. Too much highlights of his career are missing. Yet for a single disc, with an insightful 16 page booklet, and Rhino's "All Killer No Filler" now out of print, this is the only compilation around that gives you an introduction to the man that does him justice. It's a Killer!
A genuine 'Best Of' ... almost.......2006-05-03
But...Universal (zero stars, hence the average rating) have been at it again.... following on from the consistent (and unwelcome) party trick played by UK Spectrum in featuring 'wrong tracks' on their JLL collections, most recently in respect of the '1963-77' Mercury set "Many Sides Of JLL", which includes a 1989 (movie-soundtrack) recording of 'Crazy Arms', their US colleagues have shown that they are equally adept at screwing things up...
Hard on the heels of "Many Sides" comes, on Universal's US imprint Hip-O Records, a fine looking collection called "The Defintive Jerry Lee Lewis", featuring, as a sticky label proclaims, "His 24 Greatest Hits 1957-81", taking us through from 'Whole Lotta Shakin' (plus five other Sun tracks) and concluding with a couple of Elektra masters, sandwiching sixteen of Jerry Lee's biggest Mercury hits.
A good looking, 16 page booklet, fronted, mercifully, by a highly suitable circa 1970 photo, with extensive, well-written (if predictable, in terms of content), liner notes. So far so good, although strange that the chronological order of the recordings is compromised by 'inverting' "What's Made Milwaukee Famous" and "Another Place Another Time" - be that as it may, a minor blemish on what appears to be, indeed, a 'Definitive' collection; the sort of thing you'd happily pass on to a friend as an 'introduction' to JLL, to convey something of the scope and depth of his career to those who haven't got beyond 1958...
And then, just when you thought they'd cracked it..
You get to 1973 and, sandwiched between "Sometimes A Memory Ain't Enough" and "He Can't Fill My Shoes", is a 'boisterous' "Drinkin' Wine Spo-dee o'dee" (okay, again messing slightly with the chronology, but perhaps forgivable), originally released, as the booklet tells us, on
Mercury single 73374 and a #20 country, #41 pop hit. Well, sort of. What you actually get is a 1963 recording originally outed on the 1966 album 'Memphis Beat'.
Fantastic music; Jerry Lee in his prime, marred only by the serial-spoilers at Universal. One is always left with the impression that the attitude is 'just get it out; make a buck; why should we care?'
