'Asleep At The Wheel' fans will immediately appreciate Jason Robert's first solo effort. While "Texas Fiddle Man" draws most of its material from the public domain, Roberts salutes some of his favorites like Johnny Gimble, Lefty Frizzel and George Jones. While the disc has singing ballads, it is the instrumentals that showcase Roberts' fiddle talent. The vocals sound great and make one wonder why Jason Roberts waited so long to release his own disc. While the material leans more towards the Country area of the Country-Western spectrum, Western Swing fans will be delighted to know that Ray Benson arranged most songs and co-produced the album. Speaking of Benson, if you were dissapointed by the croonerism of his "Beyond Time," you will probably enjoy listening to this other freshman release by an 'Asleep At The Wheel' member. While "Texas Fiddle Man" will especially appeal to the fiddle fan, it has something for just about any lover of real Americana.
