Album Description

This is the first album by this Dutch singer, guitarist and songwriter that contains mostly cover versions of songs by his favorite blues and country singers! Basically a solo album with a little help from his American and English friends, "Songs from the Southland" makes effective use of Hans Theessink's incredible sense for modern versions of the blues. The interplay of Theessink's vocals with the many shades of Linda Tillery's Cultural Heritage Choir is truly unique!

Hans Theessink has been internationally acclaimed as the most gifted European blues singer and writer of his generation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow, Blues From Far Away, But The Real Deal.......2006-11-24

I never meant to be a chauvinist, but I thought you had to be American to play great blues. Boy was I ever wrong. Hans Theessink is the real deal, despite being Dutch. His blues is exactly what the blues is supposed to sound like: full of heart and sadness. On this album (his best by far IMHO), he does a number of traditional blues songs including a tremendous St. James Infirmary, a melancholic song which has never been done better, despite being covered by Louis Armstrong, Dr. John, Doc Watson, Lou Rawls, and Dave Van Ronk (if you wanna know a few more versions check out my list of great versions of St. James Infirmary on Amazon).

Theessink, whose Dutch accent is almost undetectable, does versions of "My Girl" (Leadbelly), John Fogerty's "One Hundred and Ten in the Shade", some Robert Johnson, Skip James, and etc. Real blues, often done with solo acoustic guitar accompaniment, and nothing but his deep, DEEP baritone. Beautiful album.

4 out of 5 stars great collection, old recordings.......2007-01-09

I am enjoying this CD, though I hadn't expected the recordings to be so old. The sound quality is good, nevertheless. Good choice for a ragtime fan.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Music!!.......2005-09-09

Any fan of ragtime music will enjoy this!! It's interesting and enlightening take on ragtime piano.

    2 out of 5 stars I found it !!.......2001-05-26

I, too, grew up listening to an old castte tape of this recording. I have been looking for the cd for many years. Why didn't I look for it at Amazon before ?!

This is a recording that makes any moment a pleasant and joyful time. You will never stop listening to it for years and still enjoy every track as the first time. It is so light... You will also enjoy the charming sound of each instrument, and you'll shurely discover a whole new aproach to Joplin's music as a band, rather than the original piano. Of course, the piano versions stand for themselves, but the deep bass lines, the charming flutes, the rithm of drums, you could almost belive it could have originally been written for a band.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who apreciates Ragtime.......2000-01-07

Anyone who apreciates the Ragtime music of Scott Joplin should own a copy of the New England Conservatory Ragtime Ensemble. I grew up listening to an old cassette recording of the Ensemble and was so excited to find that a CD was still available. It is wonderful and exciting to hear Ragtime played by an entire enseble of instuments, rather than just a piano. Once again, a must for any lover of Ragtime.

4 out of 5 stars Some wonderful pieces in this collection.......1999-10-02

Two words..."Bink's Waltz" worth the price of admission here. While an entire CD of these songs begins to feel strident, this music is very evocative--a brave wash of gaiety over sadness. A good addition to any collection of "American" music. Hope the Ragtime Conservatory records more. J. Makil

If you are a jazz guitar player you NEED to hear this cd, and that is the GOSPEL TRUTH!!! Sister Rosetta Tharpe sings in a mannered preachy style, with a sophistocated blues feeling, yet she plays electric guitar in a similar fashion as Charlie Christian. This cd finds the singer playing solo guitar and singing Gospel standards live. ESSENTIAL jazz guitar album.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs by a Superstar of the Past.......2005-07-28

Gene Austin was one of the most popular singers of the first half of the twentieth century. He once estimated he sold over 80 million records. This collection includes some of his best songs, including three recordings which Joel Whitburn in "Pop Memories" listed as reaching "number one on the charts."

Here is an excerpt of a description of Gene Austin by Nathaniel Shilkret, who first discovered Austin and who provided the orchestral accompaniment for about half of the tracks on this CD, taken from the recently released autobiography "Nathaniel Shilkret: Sixty Years in the Music Business:"

"One day at Victor I was asked to listen to a 'pop' tune called `When My Sugar Walks Down the Street....' As the young fellow sang the song I was pleasantly surprised by his voice and style.... I asked his name,.... Gene said in surprise, `I auditioned for the Victor twice and I was turned down....' He jumped from an occasional $50 per week artist to a $4000 per week artist."

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful crooning; don't miss this one!.......2005-06-12

Gene Austin had one of the most beautifully smooth voices in the business. This guy could turn any song into a lullaby. Just listen to "I have a feeling I'm falling" and get a taste of this man's unique talent. The back-up bands are perfect - romantic yearning comes through in both the singer and his band. Lots of great tunes here. Austin is able to interpret each song perfectly for his angelic male voice. Romantic, relaxing, a perfect sound souvenir from the twenties.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Early Crooner!.......2000-02-01

The Voice of the Southland is an outstanding collection of songs by one of my favorite singers of the 1920s-1930s. The sound quality is excellent for recordings of this period and the selection of songs represent the crème de la crème of Gene Austin's early career (he had a semi-revival during the 1950s). Just a few of the twenty-five great songs on this disc include "My Blue Heaven," the biggest hit of the 1920s, "Ev'rything's Made For Love," "The Lonesome Road," "Just Like A Melody From Under The Sky," "Love Letters In the Sand," and "Ramona." I enthusiastically recommend this CD, another great issue from ASV/Living Era. The only other Gene Austin offering in print, Time To Relax, isn't as good as this one but still comes highly recommended, and at the time of this review is also available through Amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars Just plain relaxing.......1999-11-13

for those who enjoy the slow, quiet, peaceful voice of Gene Austin, this is a must to have.

5 out of 5 stars Gene was the first great crooner........1999-07-23

I met Gene in 1959, in the airport lounge in Calgary, Canada. He was on the road. The young couple supporting him were called, Sunny Day and Stormy Knight. Gene impressed me with his easy style and sincerity. A true artist and gentleman.

Is it legal to be THIS good? Jesus. Quite possibly the best album I've ever owned. Their harmonies and arrangements are so interesting, smooth and unreal. Out of this world, don't even bother trying to listen to it first, freakin buy it.

5 out of 5 stars These guys rock my face off!.......2006-10-07

I got my first dose of The Southland when they were on tour with Tristan Prettyman in Portland and Seattle a little over a year and a half ago and I was hooked. Since then I have seen them perform live five more times and have grown to love them more and more each time. Truth is, you are missing out if you don't already own this cd!

      5 out of 5 stars Great CD--great live!.......2006-07-28

While I buy a lot of music and attend a slew of live concerts every year, I've never written a review. I felt compelled to write about The Southland.

I saw The Southland last summer in Indy, with OAR. They were the best band of the night. I bought their CD at the concert and two of the band members signed the insert. They were so approachable. Over the past year I repeatedly found myself putting in their CD and listening over and over, because like so many other reviewers--I NEVER tire of their music! Hard to pick favorites, but their cover of "I Only Have Eyes For You" makes me smile and I love "Miles" and "The Drowning."

      Get this CD!!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good album.......2006-03-16

Few good songs, Shadow is a solid track, and they do a great cover of "I only have eyes for you". I would recommend the album, worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Band, Awesome CD.......2006-01-12

I first saw The Southland this summer when they opened, along with Pepper, for O.A.R. at a concert in Indy. I sat down right as they began to play, and I wasn't expecting anything too special. Boy, was I wrong. The Southland was great live and really set the mood for later. Everyone was in awe at how great their songs were and how great they were at getting the crowd into their performance. Their songs are so chill, fun, and relaxing, and you can find a hint of California in all of their songs. I bought the cd just recently, and I love it. They're a great band and anyone who likes to relax and listen to great music that puts you in a good mood needs to check out The Southland's Influence of Geography. You'll really enjoy listening to it.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Historically significant music, wonderfully performed!.......2004-06-01

Each of the composers here was a significant contributor to the Harlem Renaissance and by tune or text, these works document the coming jazz explosion. Many have never before been recorded.

For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.

The other three CDs are available as single titles, or in the boxed set THE WITNESS COLLECTION which includes:

WHAT A MIGHTY GOD: Spirituals and Gospels for Chorus
DANCE LIKE THE WIND: Music of Today's Black Composers
GOT THE SAINT LOUIS BLUES: Classical Music in the Jazz Age
SKYWARD MY PEOPLE ROSE: Music of William Grant Still

        HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
