Are Britney and Christina over-the-hill? It's a question the effervescent talents of 15-year-old Lizzie McGuire star/teeny-pop Hilary Duff fairly begs. While the plot of this big-screen adaptation of Duff's popular Disney TV series (Lizzie and pals take a class trip to Italy; she's mistaken for a Neopolitan pop star; comic complications ensue) hearkens back to the days of Frankie and Annette--or was it Mickey and Judy?--its soundtrack is a downright sunny tribute to the power of contemporary teen pop. Anchored by Duff's performances of the bright, ear-candy single, "Why Not," and her balladeer turn as the film's faux Italian pop princess, "What Dreams Are Made Of" (each in two versions), it's a score whose bubbly energy resonates through its covers--Atomic Kittens' take on the reggae/Blondie chestnut "The Tide Is High"; Vitamin C's peppy version of the kitsch classic "Volare"; Jump 5's faithful reading of EW&F's "Shining Star"--and originals like Cooler Kids' infectious "All Around the World" and Beu Sister's "You Make Me Feel Like a Star" alike. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
The Lizzie McGuire Movie.......2007-01-16
What Is With The First Review???????.......2006-07-29
I LUV this CD.......2006-06-14
My FAVORITE song is "What Dreams Are Made Of" done by Lizzie McGuire. I give it a PERFECT 10!!! I give this whole CD a 10!
Pop Fans Of The World Rejoice!.......2006-05-26
1. Hilary Duff, Why Not-I seriously felt the need to memorize the lyrics to this when I first heard it, but now that I have 4 different Why Nots on my playlist from 4 different Hilary Duff or Hilary Duff featured CD's, it's just OK now. 3/5
2. Atomic Kitten, The Tide Is High (Get The Feeling)-Probably in a tie with Volare for the best song on this soundtrack! A Blondie orginal, this one is cool, empowering, and makes you want to belt your heart out just like Lizzie did in the film! 5/5
3. Cooler Kids, All Around The World-An OK song. It's fun and groovy, and the band singing it isn't all that bad either. 3/5
4. Paolo & Isabella, What Dreams Are Made Of-Too poppy, blech. This one is what launched Hilary into her too-unfortunate singing career and made people actually BELIEVE she can sing. Curse the bimbos who suggested Hilary could be a pop star. 2/5
5. Jump 5, Shining Star-Kind of similar to number 3. This soundtrack features a ton of boy-girl ensembles that almost, but not quite, made it big in the pop world. 3/5
6. Volare, Vitamin C-Oh my gosh! This one rocks! It's probably one of, if not, the best song on here! It'll make you dance to the beat! 5/5
7. LMNT, Open Your Eyes (To Love)- An okay ballad. It fits the soundtrack's romantic-tinged pop melodies. 2/5
8. The Beu Sisters, You Make Me Feel Like A Star (Lizzie Mix)- A cool, once again girl power, one of those "I-wanna-be-seriously-cool" songs that will make preteen girls gasp and put their hands together and say, "I hope I can be a star! I hope I can be a star!" 4/5
9. Taylor Dayne, Supermodel-This epitomizes the girlpower theme that reigns supreme on the soundtrack and will make every girl cheer "Rock on!" Also, it gives new meaning to the phrase "You better work!" 4/5
10. Lizzie McGuire, What Dreams Are Made Of-The pop version of song number 4, haters of no-talent pop music will despise this one even worse. It's basically just a bunch of souped-up garbage that allowed Hilary Duff to make her saddening transition into the music world. And you know what? She was a success! Goes to show you how far we've fallen. 2/5
11. Dean Martin, On An Evening In Roma-An opera style Italian song that you can picture playing while driving through the streets of Italy. It fits the movie, because it was based in Rome, and suits the soundtrack's romantic theme. 2/5
12. Haylie Duff, Girl In The Band-Just when I couldn't stomach the thought of Hilary conquering the music world, her sister gets an idea and decides to cash in with a bunch of watered down, blah-blah pop songs. Whenever you see a soundtrack to a Hilary movie, she and her sister have their names and faces plastered all over the front, back, and insides of the CD and at least have a combined six or seven songs. Hilary's bad enough with her mousey-toned voice, but Haylie looks and sings like a sly weasel. Uggh, I'm dreading the soundtrack to August's Material Girls, a movie in which they BOTH costar. Anyway, back to THIS song, it so badly wants to be the cool headbanger that all the girls skip to first when they come home and crank their music, but fails oh-so-miserably in a concoction of warbles, whines, and wanna-be rock. Skip it pronto. 2/5
13. Score, Orchestral Suite From The Lizzie McGuire Movie-This is okay if you're a classical music fan. It's basically the light Italian music played frequently in the movie. 2/5
14. Hilary Duff, Why Not(McMix)-Although I gave the original Why Not a solid but not great 3 stars only because I heard it a gazillion times, I like the McMix because I haven't heard it nearly as many times as the original, and they added it on the soundtrack just so the soundtrack would have a fairly decent amount of songs on it in order to sell. All that said, it's still the perfect way to end this CD. 4/5
Very Satisfying.......2006-04-10
1. Why Not: 8/10; Shows Hilary's better days. Nice beat to it.
2. The Tide Is High (Get The Feeling): 8/10; You'll get caught humming it to yourself.
3. All Around The World: 5/10.. Very obnoxious and annoying.
4. What Dreams Are Made Of (Ballad Version): 7/10; Pretty, but gets kind of dull after the third repeat.
5. Shining Star: 8/10; Nice song, and a rocking beat!
6. Volare: 8/10; Very cute song.
7. Open Your Eyes (To Love): 7/10; has a nice slow rhythmn, but didn't really catch my interest.
8. You Make Me Feel Like A Star (Lizzie Mix): 8/10; a quick song; one of my favorites on here.
9. Supermodel: 6/10; a bit annoying to listen to.
10. What Dreams Are Made Of: 8/10; Again, shows Duff's better days. Nice song.
11. On An Evening In Roma: 7/10; It sounds nice. Very..'Romesy".
12. Girl In The Band: -1/10; I would kick this off if I could.
13. Orchestral Suite From The Lizzie McGuire Movie (Score): 9/10; Very, very smooth and breezy. It's so exciting to listen to.
14. Why Not (McMix): 6/10; Eh..-shrug-

The Special Jury Prize winner at the 2002 Sundance Festival, director Steven Shainberg's film deftly turned a particularly tweaked boss-employee relationship into a warm, sometimes amusing meditation on sadomasochism. And while composer Angelo Badalamenti's creepy, neo-gothic soundscapes for longtime collaborator David Lynch have generally milked humanity for every last drop of perverse behavior, here his delicate, evocative instrumental underscore does precisely the opposite. Ever atmospheric, Badalamenti's electro-acoustic work--perfectly set up by Leonard Cohen's smoky "I'm Your Man"--creates a sense of both mystery and adventure, a gentle musical portrait of the troubled, longing souls beneath the overt S&M trappings. If its occasionally tinkly interplay between piano and guitar sometimes seem a tad New-Agey in scope, it also seems a telling metaphor for the story's elusive boundary between emotional darkness and light. Lizzie West's alt-folk "Chariot's Rise" neatly bookends Badalamenti and Cohen with an upbeat irony that also parallels the film's undercurrent of interpersonal fantasy. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
Lizzie West and her songs are going places, have been places, and are here right now. "I Pledge Allegiance to Myself," the Brooklyn-based cross-country gypsy's first CD for Appleseed, recounts her latest adventures on what she calls "the holy road" - the open-minded path to experience, ideas, honesty, and living life in the moment.Lizzie's debut CD, originally self-released and then reissued in slicked-up form by Warner Bros. as "Holy Road: Freedom Songs" three years ago, won her acclaim as "Breakout Artist of 2003" from AOL and Entertainment Weekly. Hits magazine called her "Marianne Faithfull, Grace Jones and PJ Harvey rolled into one." Her songs were featured on TV shows ("Everwood," "Dawson's Creek," Third Watch") and in movies ("Secretary," HBO's "Rock the Boat"). She was on the fast track to mass appeal. But ongoing disagreements with her label and the sudden loss of her parents to cancer made Lizzie realize it was time for a change.
Fans of Appleseed Recordings' dedication to artistic freedom and social justice through music, Lizzie and her musical collaborator, co-producer, and boyfriend, Anthony Kieraldo (a.k.a. The White Buffalo), brought Lizzie's new CD of 12 original songs and two cover versions to the independent label.
Recorded in New York, Nashville and Jamaica, "I Pledge Allegiance to Myself" is an intoxicating array of personal and philosophical experiences set to arrangements informed by folk, roots, hip-hop, reggae, gospel and contemporary Americana. One moment Lizzie is the playful, sexy seductress in the delightfully sunny reggae of "Rope Me In and Smoke Me," the next she's the jealousy-wracked accuser in "God Damn That Man." She issues her personal declaration of spiritual independence in the title track; in "Portrait of an Artist as a Young Woman (Thank You)," she gratefully thanks the life force within us all, then digs for hope beneath the pained life-during-wartime vignettes of "19 Miles to Baghdad." Although troubled love is a recurring theme, her unquenchable belief in self-determination resurfaces on many songs, including a haunted version of Bob Marley & the Wailers' "Get Up, Stand Up." The CD's other cover song is a bittersweet ride on Steve Goodman's classic "City of New ! Orleans," which becomes a bruised plea for unity in our fractured country.

Customer Reviews:
Among Organ Hymn CDs, this is really one of the best.......2007-01-13
Mr Swann makes good use of the numerous ranks of pipes to achieve a superb voicing of the organ. His choice of pipes and their sequencing is among the best I have heard anywhere. The size of the cathedral gives a really superb reverberation. Call me sentimental, but this CD can raise the hairs on your spine, or at times bring tears to your eyes.
Those with decent heavyweight speakers will be able to accurately render the high and low notes (hint: if your home speakers are tinny or small, try this in the car--it might be better).
Note: I enjoy both sacred and secular organ: this CD resembles a classical recital to some degree. If your preference is vocal accompaniment, or modern church music with snare drums instead of organs, you will not be happy; fair warning. There is no choir, thankfully; plenty of such CDs exist elsewhere. For example the Mormon Tabernacle Organ is superior to nearly all others, but their organ is always subservient to the choir, so the organ cannot shine. Note: I am not opposed to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir--I flew up to Salt Lake City just to watch Thursday night Choir practice, and it is a uplifting experience not to be missed. But the organ cannot shine; it will be subservient to the choir--the resulting music is different from a pure organ CD. Also, they cram 30 hymns onto a CD--each track ends up being a medley of three hymns. Summary: how nice to have a pure organ CD, which is very rare.
One weakness which needs to be pointed out, in fairness (as in another review), is that each hymn lasts no more than two stanzas. So even though Mr Swann pulls out more and more stops as the pieces progress, and accomplishes key changes flawlessly, we can only imagine the wonderful fortissimo multi-pipe crescendo that would result if he played four or five stanzas of, say, "A Mighty Fortress" or "Rejoice," each building on the other. Alas, with twenty hymns on the CD, time is short for each hymn. This is my minor criticism of this CD. The answer clearly would have been to release vol 2, 3, 4, etc.... Could the faithful flock out in California please petition the pastor & get this done?
In conclusion, this is my old reliable and ranks (tied) in the top two of my organ CD collection. Most reviews in Amazon give 1 star or 5 stars (we love it or hate it). Five is really inadequate, it deserves 6; this from someone who doesn't like to give praise.
I hope this has been helpful in your purchasing deliberations. Please let me know via the comments button if you have additonal or contrary thoughts. Is there a better title? Thank you for your attention & courtesy.
