Are Britney and Christina over-the-hill? It's a question the effervescent talents of 15-year-old Lizzie McGuire star/teeny-pop Hilary Duff fairly begs. While the plot of this big-screen adaptation of Duff's popular Disney TV series (Lizzie and pals take a class trip to Italy; she's mistaken for a Neopolitan pop star; comic complications ensue) hearkens back to the days of Frankie and Annette--or was it Mickey and Judy?--its soundtrack is a downright sunny tribute to the power of contemporary teen pop. Anchored by Duff's performances of the bright, ear-candy single, "Why Not," and her balladeer turn as the film's faux Italian pop princess, "What Dreams Are Made Of" (each in two versions), it's a score whose bubbly energy resonates through its covers--Atomic Kittens' take on the reggae/Blondie chestnut "The Tide Is High"; Vitamin C's peppy version of the kitsch classic "Volare"; Jump 5's faithful reading of EW&F's "Shining Star"--and originals like Cooler Kids' infectious "All Around the World" and Beu Sister's "You Make Me Feel Like a Star" alike. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars The Lizzie McGuire Movie.......2007-01-16

Perfect gift for a tiny-bopper. I normally dread the idea of finding room for all the gifts after the holidays but the gift of music and movies was the way to go this year. My little girl is almost 8 and Disney is not risky with its topics.

3 out of 5 stars Pop Fans Of The World Rejoice!.......2006-05-26

Needless to say, if you own Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, the Cinderella Story soundtrack, and both Princess Diaries soundtracks, then you either own this one or have never seen or heard of the Lizzie McGuire movie at all! It is, of course, 100% girl-power friendy Bazooka-filled chick tunes with no signs of edginess whatsoever. Preteen girls will absolutely love it, as for any pure-pop addicted fans who gobble every soundtrack or CD with Hilary's Fluff featured. I own this CD, and I think it's generally OK. A few songs stand out much more than the others, but most of the tunes are seriously fun to listen and groove to!
1. Hilary Duff, Why Not-I seriously felt the need to memorize the lyrics to this when I first heard it, but now that I have 4 different Why Nots on my playlist from 4 different Hilary Duff or Hilary Duff featured CD's, it's just OK now. 3/5
2. Atomic Kitten, The Tide Is High (Get The Feeling)-Probably in a tie with Volare for the best song on this soundtrack! A Blondie orginal, this one is cool, empowering, and makes you want to belt your heart out just like Lizzie did in the film! 5/5
3. Cooler Kids, All Around The World-An OK song. It's fun and groovy, and the band singing it isn't all that bad either. 3/5
4. Paolo & Isabella, What Dreams Are Made Of-Too poppy, blech. This one is what launched Hilary into her too-unfortunate singing career and made people actually BELIEVE she can sing. Curse the bimbos who suggested Hilary could be a pop star. 2/5
5. Jump 5, Shining Star-Kind of similar to number 3. This soundtrack features a ton of boy-girl ensembles that almost, but not quite, made it big in the pop world. 3/5
6. Volare, Vitamin C-Oh my gosh! This one rocks! It's probably one of, if not, the best song on here! It'll make you dance to the beat! 5/5
7. LMNT, Open Your Eyes (To Love)- An okay ballad. It fits the soundtrack's romantic-tinged pop melodies. 2/5
8. The Beu Sisters, You Make Me Feel Like A Star (Lizzie Mix)- A cool, once again girl power, one of those "I-wanna-be-seriously-cool" songs that will make preteen girls gasp and put their hands together and say, "I hope I can be a star! I hope I can be a star!" 4/5
9. Taylor Dayne, Supermodel-This epitomizes the girlpower theme that reigns supreme on the soundtrack and will make every girl cheer "Rock on!" Also, it gives new meaning to the phrase "You better work!" 4/5
10. Lizzie McGuire, What Dreams Are Made Of-The pop version of song number 4, haters of no-talent pop music will despise this one even worse. It's basically just a bunch of souped-up garbage that allowed Hilary Duff to make her saddening transition into the music world. And you know what? She was a success! Goes to show you how far we've fallen. 2/5
11. Dean Martin, On An Evening In Roma-An opera style Italian song that you can picture playing while driving through the streets of Italy. It fits the movie, because it was based in Rome, and suits the soundtrack's romantic theme. 2/5
12. Haylie Duff, Girl In The Band-Just when I couldn't stomach the thought of Hilary conquering the music world, her sister gets an idea and decides to cash in with a bunch of watered down, blah-blah pop songs. Whenever you see a soundtrack to a Hilary movie, she and her sister have their names and faces plastered all over the front, back, and insides of the CD and at least have a combined six or seven songs. Hilary's bad enough with her mousey-toned voice, but Haylie looks and sings like a sly weasel. Uggh, I'm dreading the soundtrack to August's Material Girls, a movie in which they BOTH costar. Anyway, back to THIS song, it so badly wants to be the cool headbanger that all the girls skip to first when they come home and crank their music, but fails oh-so-miserably in a concoction of warbles, whines, and wanna-be rock. Skip it pronto. 2/5
13. Score, Orchestral Suite From The Lizzie McGuire Movie-This is okay if you're a classical music fan. It's basically the light Italian music played frequently in the movie. 2/5
14. Hilary Duff, Why Not(McMix)-Although I gave the original Why Not a solid but not great 3 stars only because I heard it a gazillion times, I like the McMix because I haven't heard it nearly as many times as the original, and they added it on the soundtrack just so the soundtrack would have a fairly decent amount of songs on it in order to sell. All that said, it's still the perfect way to end this CD. 4/5

4 out of 5 stars Very Satisfying.......2006-04-10

I would surely get this soundtrack if I were you. It's fresh and has a nice set of songs.

1. Why Not: 8/10; Shows Hilary's better days. Nice beat to it.

2. The Tide Is High (Get The Feeling): 8/10; You'll get caught humming it to yourself.

3. All Around The World: 5/10.. Very obnoxious and annoying.

4. What Dreams Are Made Of (Ballad Version): 7/10; Pretty, but gets kind of dull after the third repeat.

5. Shining Star: 8/10; Nice song, and a rocking beat!

6. Volare: 8/10; Very cute song.

7. Open Your Eyes (To Love): 7/10; has a nice slow rhythmn, but didn't really catch my interest.

8. You Make Me Feel Like A Star (Lizzie Mix): 8/10; a quick song; one of my favorites on here.

9. Supermodel: 6/10; a bit annoying to listen to.

10. What Dreams Are Made Of: 8/10; Again, shows Duff's better days. Nice song.

11. On An Evening In Roma: 7/10; It sounds nice. Very..'Romesy".

12. Girl In The Band: -1/10; I would kick this off if I could.

13. Orchestral Suite From The Lizzie McGuire Movie (Score): 9/10; Very, very smooth and breezy. It's so exciting to listen to.

14. Why Not (McMix): 6/10; Eh..-shrug-

I was introduced to Lizzie West through my favorite t.v show Alias. It was her song "Prayer" that was playing during someone's funeral. I knew right then and there that I needed to go out and buy this amazing CD. Right from the beginning she draws you in with her amazing voice, and takes you with her on her journey. An amazing CD!

5 out of 5 stars A terrific CD!!!.......2004-12-20

Lzzie West has a terrific voice and her lyrics are moving! I discovered Lizzie West after hearing a song of hers in the movie Secretary. I bought both Holy Road and her CD "Lizzie West"! I love both of them! I hope she produces more!

5 out of 5 stars one of my all-time favorites.......2004-11-13

I first saw Lizzie West on top of the Peabody Hotel in Memphis(July 2003) and she blew me away with her amazing voice and spirit. I bought the CD and over one year later still listen to it regularly. She is a true American original and this CD is one-of-a-kind.

The Special Jury Prize winner at the 2002 Sundance Festival, director Steven Shainberg's film deftly turned a particularly tweaked boss-employee relationship into a warm, sometimes amusing meditation on sadomasochism. And while composer Angelo Badalamenti's creepy, neo-gothic soundscapes for longtime collaborator David Lynch have generally milked humanity for every last drop of perverse behavior, here his delicate, evocative instrumental underscore does precisely the opposite. Ever atmospheric, Badalamenti's electro-acoustic work--perfectly set up by Leonard Cohen's smoky "I'm Your Man"--creates a sense of both mystery and adventure, a gentle musical portrait of the troubled, longing souls beneath the overt S&M trappings. If its occasionally tinkly interplay between piano and guitar sometimes seem a tad New-Agey in scope, it also seems a telling metaphor for the story's elusive boundary between emotional darkness and light. Lizzie West's alt-folk "Chariot's Rise" neatly bookends Badalamenti and Cohen with an upbeat irony that also parallels the film's undercurrent of interpersonal fantasy. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Been waiting for the price to come down ..........2006-07-27

But waiting no longer. It is now on i-T-u-n-e-s for their normal price. Well worth the money for the download. It is even better than I remembered from the movie.

5 out of 5 stars if you liked this soundtrack..........2005-09-19

Angelo Badalamenti also did the Holy Smoke! soundrtack and it is amazing! his unique, distinctive sound comes through on both soundtracks and the magical quality adds such a dimension to both films. for those trivia buffs, i was excited to find out that he also composed the theme song for the opening of Inside The Actors Studio (bravo). please check out the soundtrack and the movie (Holy Smoke! staring kate winslet & harvey keitel, directed by jane campion), they are both well worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars The movie is great and so is this soundtrack!!!.......2005-06-18

I am watching "Secretary" right now, probably for the millionth time, and so I decided to buy the soundtrack. It's great, but don't spend a lot of $$$, I found it quite easily on shopaol.com and I only spent $19.41, and that was with the 3-6 business day shipping!!!

***The "theme" song is superb, and I love "Chariots Rise", it is fabulous!!!***

5 out of 5 stars smile.......2005-04-02

This movie and soundtrack both make me so happy. And no other song turns me on as much as the one that plays during Lee's little fantasy sequence. Too bad I don't pay $35 for CDs.

5 out of 5 stars The CD with the S & M price!.......2005-01-28

Great movie, great score. Agreed. But what's with this $60 price at amazon.com? I'm getting pricing for 1/4 of that price elsewhere. Must be trying to take advantage of the lifestyle. I'll pass.

Album Description

Lizzie West and her songs are going places, have been places, and are here right now. "I Pledge Allegiance to Myself," the Brooklyn-based cross-country gypsy's first CD for Appleseed, recounts her latest adventures on what she calls "the holy road" - the open-minded path to experience, ideas, honesty, and living life in the moment.

Lizzie's debut CD, originally self-released and then reissued in slicked-up form by Warner Bros. as "Holy Road: Freedom Songs" three years ago, won her acclaim as "Breakout Artist of 2003" from AOL and Entertainment Weekly. Hits magazine called her "Marianne Faithfull, Grace Jones and PJ Harvey rolled into one." Her songs were featured on TV shows ("Everwood," "Dawson's Creek," Third Watch") and in movies ("Secretary," HBO's "Rock the Boat"). She was on the fast track to mass appeal. But ongoing disagreements with her label and the sudden loss of her parents to cancer made Lizzie realize it was time for a change.

Fans of Appleseed Recordings' dedication to artistic freedom and social justice through music, Lizzie and her musical collaborator, co-producer, and boyfriend, Anthony Kieraldo (a.k.a. The White Buffalo), brought Lizzie's new CD of 12 original songs and two cover versions to the independent label.

Recorded in New York, Nashville and Jamaica, "I Pledge Allegiance to Myself" is an intoxicating array of personal and philosophical experiences set to arrangements informed by folk, roots, hip-hop, reggae, gospel and contemporary Americana. One moment Lizzie is the playful, sexy seductress in the delightfully sunny reggae of "Rope Me In and Smoke Me," the next she's the jealousy-wracked accuser in "God Damn That Man." She issues her personal declaration of spiritual independence in the title track; in "Portrait of an Artist as a Young Woman (Thank You)," she gratefully thanks the life force within us all, then digs for hope beneath the pained life-during-wartime vignettes of "19 Miles to Baghdad." Although troubled love is a recurring theme, her unquenchable belief in self-determination resurfaces on many songs, including a haunted version of Bob Marley & the Wailers' "Get Up, Stand Up." The CD's other cover song is a bittersweet ride on Steve Goodman's classic "City of New ! Orleans," which becomes a bruised plea for unity in our fractured country.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Listen from Lizzie West.......2006-12-27

I was so excited to see a new release from Lizzie West. This is another great album. Holy Road is still my favorite, but this too is good! My favorite song is Rope Me in and Smoke Me, very sassy and seductive! This lady has a great voice. Her cover of City of New Orleans is quite good also.

5 out of 5 stars I heard it while flipping through stations.......2006-07-04

One morning as I was coming up with reasons not to get up yet (actually, it was a holiday), I heard an interview with Lizzie on the local Air AmeriKa station. Leaving aside that I heard the info on a purveyor of left-wing, fellow traveller, pablum, this woman has talent! Her songs sound great, and she has something to say, even if I personally don't quite agree with it. Definitely worth buying & a talent to watch.

2 out of 5 stars Not much content . . . .......2007-05-24

I may have given this CD three stars, may-be even four except there's not enough content! There's 16 tracks, but only 8 different songs. And plus I thought there would be songs from the TV series, or may-be even by Hilary Duff (who plays Lizzie McGuire.) But they are all from the movie, so I think they should've called it the Lizzie McGuire MOVIE Karaoke CD. So get the sound track for the movie, or a different Lizzie CD if you are interested. There are some good tracks, I'll admit. And based on my review you'd probably figure I hated the CD, not true! I even listen to it sometimes, but totally not worth what I payed for it.

5 out of 5 stars MY DAUGHTER IS SINGING ALL THE TIME NOW!.......2005-02-15

She begged us for it, we bought it home. And our daughter was singing all the time. All of a sudden she wanted voice lessons. (They are a bit pricey for us with 3 kids) so we bought her some singing lessons on cd- brilliant idea ("Voice Lessons To Go" by Vaccarino). Now she has picked up my son's guitar and is making up simple songs. We are all ready preparing for the many Karaoke Cds we will be purchasing for Christmas!

4 out of 5 stars Fun and easy........2005-01-06

Most of the little girls I know love Lizzy McGuire, and it follows that they also love to sing the songs they have heard. This CD has easy to follow lyrics with the rhythm indicated by how long words remain on the screen before changing color. So even if the songs are new, they can learn them.

Be age conscious. I wasn't, but I still think this is a great CD for kids because they will continue to listen to the Lizzy McGuire CD's while in the car and then suddenly discover they know the songs when the Karaoke system is set up.

I think Karaoke will encourage reading skills, and this makes it fun.

4 out of 5 stars Actual Karaoke CD.......2005-01-05

Unlike other Disney karaoke CDs, this one actually has on-screen words. It is a CD-G. My daughter really likes it.

3 out of 5 stars hello.......2004-04-21

Lizzie West is someone who appeared in the mid-1990s in Williamsburg. She used to play places like The Abbey when there were no clubs in this part of Brooklyn. I remember her playing guitar and singing Leonard Cohen's "Bird On The Wire" in the subway at Bedford Avenue. It seemed like everyone knew who she was. She was one of the unique characters on the scene with an undying vision and no reasons to change. On this EP five years later, she is still a Leonard Cohen fan. She covers "I'm Your Man" adequately. Apparently her beatnik gypsy and country stylings now have a home. The full record is supposed to come out soon. She sounds like a young Natalie Merchant. Hopefully the songs on the album as good as "Family Christmas?"

5 out of 5 stars The birth of greatness.......2004-04-14

It is not often that I find an artist who totally captures my ears and heart. Lizzie West did all of that with one single song: Chariots Rise. I heard it on the Secretary soundtrack (now out of print) and had to purchase everything else this woman had out on the music scene.

Lizzie's music cannot be compared to anyone else because she is unique -- she doesn't take "no" for an answer and plays by her own rules. You can hear heartache and elation in her words -- each chord blends seamlessly with the lyrics to make a musical masterpiece. Do yourself a favor and buy this album (also pick up her full length, Holy Road: Freedom Songs) -- I guarantee that these two discs will not leave your cd player anytime soon.

4 out of 5 stars New Faces of 1952 .......2007-05-13

This is the original broadway cast album. It contains songs which went on to become hits for their performers, such as Lizzie Borden, Lucky Pierre, Love is a simple thing, Guess who I saw today, Bal petit bal and Monotomous. Now re-released on Jasmine label, it was originally released by RCA Victor so the quality is excellent, but from the mono era.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful memories!.......2007-03-24

Loved having this on the CD form. I wore out the 33 1/3 record. Thank you for carrying this CD!

1 out of 5 stars Where is Time For Tea?.......2005-12-04

I bought a recording of this show in the middle '70s when RCA was re-isuing a lot of their rare soundtracks. The record made a big deal about isuing a lost track called "Time For Tea" from this show sung by June Carroll and Alice Ghostley. This track is not included on this CD. Luckily I still had the record, and was able to make a version of the CD and add the second last track just before Lizzy Borden. Buyer beware however, this CD is not complete!

1 out of 5 stars If You Tapped Your Fingers to the Music in Waiting for Goffman . . ........2005-08-16

Hey, don't waste your money unless you dig the score of really crummy musicals. Some people do. If you are not among that select group then don't believe the good reviews by other buyers (bless their hearts) like I did. Note that Amazon doesn't offer excepts from this aged dog. Good strategy. I bought this cd for the Lizzie Borden song on it but the arrangers even ruined that with a silly bridge section about Lizzie ruining the singers' weekly hoedown. Terrible. Maybe I can unload this cd in a used music store and get a few dollars back. I hope so.

5 out of 5 stars What about the movie?.......2005-07-01

Great, great show! But are any of you people aware that "New Faces of 1952" came out as a movie. The entire stage show was shot mainly from the front as if from a really expensive orchestra seat. Includes Paul Lynde and Ronny Graham in a howling send-up of "Death of a Salesman." Paul Lynde in tattered jungle gear at an afternoon ladies lecture describing his latest safari to darkest Africa. And Eartha doing "Monotonous!" The whole show was filmed.

NOW where is a VHS or DVD of that film? The world is waiting!

5 out of 5 stars Among Organ Hymn CDs, this is really one of the best.......2007-01-13

I am quick to criticize any organ CD that isn't really inspiring. It should be something that we want to play once again when we pick it up. This CD definitely doesn't lack such inspiration.

Mr Swann makes good use of the numerous ranks of pipes to achieve a superb voicing of the organ. His choice of pipes and their sequencing is among the best I have heard anywhere. The size of the cathedral gives a really superb reverberation. Call me sentimental, but this CD can raise the hairs on your spine, or at times bring tears to your eyes.

Those with decent heavyweight speakers will be able to accurately render the high and low notes (hint: if your home speakers are tinny or small, try this in the car--it might be better).

Note: I enjoy both sacred and secular organ: this CD resembles a classical recital to some degree. If your preference is vocal accompaniment, or modern church music with snare drums instead of organs, you will not be happy; fair warning. There is no choir, thankfully; plenty of such CDs exist elsewhere. For example the Mormon Tabernacle Organ is superior to nearly all others, but their organ is always subservient to the choir, so the organ cannot shine. Note: I am not opposed to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir--I flew up to Salt Lake City just to watch Thursday night Choir practice, and it is a uplifting experience not to be missed. But the organ cannot shine; it will be subservient to the choir--the resulting music is different from a pure organ CD. Also, they cram 30 hymns onto a CD--each track ends up being a medley of three hymns. Summary: how nice to have a pure organ CD, which is very rare.

One weakness which needs to be pointed out, in fairness (as in another review), is that each hymn lasts no more than two stanzas. So even though Mr Swann pulls out more and more stops as the pieces progress, and accomplishes key changes flawlessly, we can only imagine the wonderful fortissimo multi-pipe crescendo that would result if he played four or five stanzas of, say, "A Mighty Fortress" or "Rejoice," each building on the other. Alas, with twenty hymns on the CD, time is short for each hymn. This is my minor criticism of this CD. The answer clearly would have been to release vol 2, 3, 4, etc.... Could the faithful flock out in California please petition the pastor & get this done?

In conclusion, this is my old reliable and ranks (tied) in the top two of my organ CD collection. Most reviews in Amazon give 1 star or 5 stars (we love it or hate it). Five is really inadequate, it deserves 6; this from someone who doesn't like to give praise.

I hope this has been helpful in your purchasing deliberations. Please let me know via the comments button if you have additonal or contrary thoughts. Is there a better title? Thank you for your attention & courtesy.

5 out of 5 stars king of hymns plays king of instruments.......2001-08-17

we all know that the organ is called the king of instruments due to its complexity and size, range, color with its stops, etc. playing hymns is not the same as written comppositions for solo organ.why?because playing written organ works is just playing the composer notes what is written. on the other hand playing hymns requires a very well trained organ player that knows how to impro vise and add colors to each stanza. and that is what fred swann makes here, nobody plays hymns as he does, improvising, modulating and make us meditate in deep of what we hear.thank you mr swann. thank you gothic records.this is a must for everybody that goes to church, sings hymns or just likes organ music.don't hesitate to buy it,you will be able to see what a gifted musician does with a simple melody or hymn tune.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Hymn Playing.......2001-02-16

Fred Swann plays wonderful arrangements of well known Hymn tunes. Many of these arangements were published in a book by Fred Bock. "Organ Snobs" should take a listen and learn how to play hymns. A truely talented organist.

3 out of 5 stars A good recording, but not for "organ snobs".......2000-12-26

"Organ snobs." Yeah, you know who you are, and I'm one too. This is not the recording for you. Swann plays at most three verses of each song, and does not improvise to the level he is capable, making the CD a great one for a more general-interest audience. I do not mean to disuade potential buyers, only to warn you that what you are getting is a quick couple of verses of each hymn on a CD that advertises the Crystal Cathedral as well or better than it portrays the talent of Swann and the extensive capacity of the Cathedral organs.

5 out of 5 stars Lizzie cuts the competition down to size.......2004-01-10

I've been interested in Lizzie Borden on & off for years and when I saw a CD w/Lizzie on the cover AND Alison Fraser was the lead, I snapped it up immediately. Alison does not disappoint. She is fabulous as always, accentuating the nuances of the score with her usual flair. Christopher McGovern & Amy Powers have created beautiful music that harkens back to a time when Broadway musicals didn't consist of American Idol cast-offs screaming at you for two hours. Historical license is taken, naturally, but does not detract from a lovely (and fun) score. The House on the Hill is gorgeous and Another Dinner will stick in your head for days! Definitely worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars for the CD, 5 stars for the show!.......2001-01-24

Having first heard of this play through small talk at a theatre site, I wondered if it would even be available, how truly "great" it would be, and why there were absolutely no names I recognized involved. With one spin of the CD, I was in Fall River, black and white, and steamed with Father. Double entendre, musical allusion, and good story telling abound in this dark horse. Although there is license taken at the end(with a musical reprise interpreting the title lady's guilt), the aura of the period shines in the snobbish ladies, descriptions of places and clothing, etc...

A must have for any true theatre buff, student, or patron.

One let down, however, is the complete absence of any libretto. This would be one smashing read!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding! A must have for all musical theatre buffs........2000-11-04

Christopher McGovern & Amy Powers have created a brilliant work of art - one that deserves to be seen and heard. In a musical about Lizzie Borden, I expected songs about murder, but I didn't expect the heart-wrenchingly beautiful, the humorous, or the many other varied types of songs. I've already purchased more CDs to give to friends. I'll cross my fingers that it comes to a theatre near me soon.

5 out of 5 stars Goofy premise, brilliant execution..........2000-06-15

If you want satirical camp like the fun "Bat Boy the Musical" or "Reefer Madness the Musical," you'll be disappointed. This is a moving, serious treatment of the sordid Lizzie Borden story. It's dark, moody and stays with you for days. Allison Fraser's dead, emotionless reading of the dialogue (yes, it's on purpose) gives me the chills. A wonderful surprise. I recommend highly.

5 out of 5 stars Lizzie Borden - A Stunning new musical.......2000-01-06

The musicalization of Lizzie Borden could have easily been something to fear but with this new musical recording, you'll want to hear it again and again. Christopher Mc Govern's music lures you, uplifts you, romances you and then horrifies you. The story of Lizzie unfolds song after song and the strong lyrics and story will hypnotize and amaze you. Alsion Fraser finds the passion in Lizzie and sores through the score makeing it impossible to imagine anyone else more perfect. All I can say is Invite Lizzie Borden into your home and you'll never want her to leave.
