5 out of 5 stars Country As It Should Be.......2003-06-16

Simply Traditional by Leland Martin is one if not the best i've heard in a long time. Traditional Country is the best if there was more than 5 stars rating it would get my vote. Thanks Leland for allowing me to hear some good country music, this is the best.

      5 out of 5 stars A Gifted Singer/ Songwriter. Leland is a Rising Star.......2002-12-08

After hearing several Leland Martin's songs on the radio I searched Amazon to see just who this unfamiliar singer was. His voice Is Country Music at its best. Leland Martin is Cash, Haggard and Jones, Vern Gosdin, Randy Travis,Johnny Horton, Keith Whitley, Alan Jackson,Travis Tritt, John Anderson, Aaron Tippin, and Mark Chestnut all bundled up - but original. I bought "Simply Traditional" on the faith of two songs heard on the airwaves. I found 15 outstanding performances. Good Luck Leland.

5 out of 5 stars Great country music.......2002-11-22

This album is country music as it should be. You'll enjoy listening to this one over and over, Leland deserves to be a big star. The country radio station in Santa Barbara county really likes his music too.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional Country Music Fans, Rise and Cheer !!.......2002-11-09

Can country music be traditional and fresh at the same time? It can, and is on this great CD. I bought this album after hearing "If I Had Long Legs Like Alan Jackson" on a local radio station. I would have been delighted if the whole CD was as good as that one song. However, I was STUNNED by the fact that every song on the album is better than the first single.

The other(count'em)14 tracks are well written, beautifully produced, and border on being anthems for those of us who prefer our country with some heritage. "Don't Ya Think" says what I have wanted to say for years...If we forget those who gave birth to country music, we will all suffer in the end. "Luckiest Man In The World", "Simply Traditional", and "More Than Friends" will have you buying extra copies to send to those you love, and the trucker's song "Stone Cold Fingers" will be in every big rig in America. Freddie's Heart (a duet with Freddie (Easy Lovin') Hart is the coolest return cameo performance I've heard in years - warning:he's still got "it".

But, what makes this album truly GREAT is Leland himself. WHAT A VOICE!! He sounds hautingly familiar, yet somehow unique. He never misses a note, he never falters in his unique phrasing, and never fails to delight your ears or your heart. This is an ESSENTIAL country CD. If I had the money, I would buy several dozen copies and send one to the head of every record company in Nashville.

This is the music I've been waiting for them to release. If you are tired of listening to paper-cut-out-video-dolls, and want to hear a REAL artist sing REAL country, then you will LOVE this CD as much as I do.

5 out of 5 stars To Each His Own.......2006-04-11

When I heard this CD, I couldn't wait to see what others had thought of it, and to share my enthusiasm for it with Amazon readers. I think it's a fantastic collection of absolutely terrific pieces, for the most part; and all beautifully played. I do understand the previous reviewer's point--it's NOT Joplin (although Gunther Schuller, Scott Wheeler and some others come pretty close)--but then, if I want to listen to Joplin, I'm going to put on....Joplin. Gimpy is misrepresenting the disc when he says "many of the pieces do not even remotely follow the classic rag form-some on this disc are seven or even ten minutes long"--exactly ONE piece is 10 minutes long, one is seven, one is six; and the remaining 15 are less than 5 minutes each. And I wouldn't call even William Albrignt's Nightmare Fantasy Rag (the 10 minute piece) "non-melodic"--it's definitely wild, at times dissonant, but completely thrilling and even has melodies one can sing along to. It's my favorite piece on the disc, and I'm certain Gimpy's least favorite. But it's also very much an exception, as is Kenneth Laufer's Twelve Note Rag--a terrific wonderfully weird piece, and Mark Kuss's Jump Cut Rag (not one of my favorites). But Schuller's Sand Point Rag, Wheeler's Calamity Rag, Brian Dykstra's Spring Beauties, Stefan Kozinski's Maloney Rag and most of the others are respectful of the ragtime tradition and clearly recognizable as rags. Joplin is great--I've taught Joplin rags here in my music theory classes at Hong Kong Baptist University for 17 years--but he's not the end of the road when it comes to rags; instead, he's at the beginning. Keep 'em coming, in my opinion!

2 out of 5 stars Not your typical ragtime.......2003-12-16

I ordered this CD without hearing it, after having immensely enjoyed Eskin's Joseph Lamb and Ragtime Women albums. I was not very impressed with "Spring Beauties." While the music I'm sure is quite difficult to play, I also found it quite difficult to listen to. I'm not blaming Eskin's playing which I've always been impressed with in the past, rather, I'm disappointed in the material she chose to record. This is not your typical ragtime! Of course, the CD does state that this is new ragtime composed by modern composers, but I expected new ragtime pieces that sound like classic rags. Nope. Unlike such delightful modern rags as Bolcom's "Graceful Ghost," Glenn Jenks's "Harbour Rag," or Max Morath's "One For Amelia," which are recognizeable as ragtime, most of the pieces on this disc bear very little resemblance to the ragtime I know. They are often dissonant, non-melodic, and harsh-sounding. Definitely not Joplin! Besides, many of the pieces do not even remotely follow the classic rag form-some on this disc are seven or even ten minutes long. I suppose if you like modern art music you may enjoy this disc, but as a fan of the music of Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb, James Scott, Artie Matthews, and others of that time, I found that this CD just isn't my cup of tea.

          Album Description

Many country music listeners wish they could hear a more traditional form of country. With a little help from some of Nashville's best musicians, his friend Freddie Hart, and a special visit from Charlie McCoy, Leland Martin returns to a traditional sound wrapped around 13 new songs and one old favorite. From the brilliant new trucker's song, "Stone Cold Fingers" to the nostalgic "Don't Ya Think" to the humorous "Hand-Me-Downs", this album sparkles. The beautifully sparse rendition of "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" is also worth a listen. Two holiday bonus tracks are also included very cleverly so they don't intrude on the rest of the album. Definitely worth a listen.
