Divide and Conquer

Editorial Reviews

Since Danni Leigh's brand of retro honky-tonk with rock attitude has so frequently earned her comparisons with Dwight Yoakam, her collaboration here with Yoakam's producer-bandleader Pete Anderson would seem to be a natural fit. Yet the results sound less like a musical progression than a stylistic smorgasbord. With the 10 tracks failing to establish a coherent identity, she bounces from hillbilly hardcore ("He Used to Say That to Me") to torch balladry ("My Last Chance Is Gone") to rock anthemry ("Somebody Oughta Do Something") to troubadour folk ("Far Cry from Here") to collegiate pop ("Don't Feel Like Crying"). A couple of cuts even sneak in a bit of reggae guitar. Leigh cowrote two of the better songs on the album, while taking three from the songbook of Jim Lauderdale. Though the photos on the CD package exude plenty of star aura, the grooves would benefit from more unified artistic substance. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Danni's Third Album.......2004-03-06

Danni Leigh's third album is a great set of music from an underrated country singer. Now signed with Audium, she released this album in November 2001. There were three singles: "Sometimes", "House of Pain" and "Last Train To San Antone". The album opens with a great song written by Jim Lauderdale called "He Used To Say That To Me", which sets the album at a nice pace. "My Last Chance Is Gone" has a haunting melody and vocals from Danni. "A Far Cry From Here" is a highlight, a nice introspective, quiet song. The album has a heavy traditional country sound, which has not changed since her debut album. Other highlights include "Don't Feel Like Crying", "Somebody Oughta Do Something" and the title track. Excellent album!

3 out of 5 stars A different kind of Danni Leigh.......2004-02-19

If you liked those first two cds by Danni Leigh, you may not necessarily like this one. It does not have the same drive that the other records have. That's why I only give this record 3 stars. However, if you like ballads, this one has them, more than the others. At any rate, her great sensuous voice comes across nicely here.

5 out of 5 stars Female Dwight Yoakum Does It Again.......2003-10-15

Danni Leigh returns to the world of country roots, with an added touch of rockabilly. Her previous albums were extremely well received in foriegn countries, but the superstar popularity she deserves in the United States has eluded her. Songs include everything from slow love songs to up-tempo shove it in your face cuts, most written by Leigh. If you haven't had the pleasure of spending listening time to the whiskey voiced Leigh, this is a pleasureable beginning.

5 out of 5 stars MISS DANNI LEIGH HAS CONQUER COUNTRY MUSIC.......2002-10-19

Miss Danni is a real excellent country singer of all times,Her
voice is very excellent and she holds her own in country music
From If The Jukebox took tear drop to her newest cd Divide and Conquer, she has made excellent progress in her songs and I think
in the future she will bring out more great songs in the near future. For an female country artist, overall,Miss Danni made some
very excellent progress in her career as a singer, musician, and
her performance is rated very highly.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Country On!.......2002-07-10

Danni Leigh is one of the most talented (and underrated) singers in Nashville. I have been a HUGE fan for a LONG time. Her voice is so gritty and real, but I have to admit she is sometimes drowned out by the abundant steel guitar on this CD.

The CD kicks off with "He Used to Say That to Me", a warning to the 'new woman' about a man whose intentions are less than true. The upbeat "Somebody Ought to Do Somethin" features some organ woven throughout and Danni adds a twist by using her own name in the song. "A Far Cry From Here" is a great folk song, reminiscent of vintage Joni Mitchell. "Don't Feel Like Cryin'" is probably the most 'radio friendly' song on the CD, some funky mandolin peps it up and it is very upbeat and catchy - Leigh sings 'hey here comes that rainy day again, but hey look at me, don't feel like cryin'.

My personal favorite song is "House of Pain" - it is about a love gone wrong and the lonliness that haunts one of the lovers. The title track of the CD features some really hot guitar and Leigh's voice is velvety. "Last Train to San Antone" is a great 'getting away to Texas' song, a lot like Jill Jack's "Austin". Divide and Conquer is another awesome CD by Danni Leigh - pick it up if you want to hear some real tear-in-your-beer country!!

3 out of 5 stars I get it, he plays fast.......2003-10-21

Speed and thrash metal, with a melodic twist. There's no doubt Joe Stump is a talented guitar player, one of the fastest I've heard. However, it gets kind of mundane by the middle of the album. Vescera delivers great vocal melodies as usual. Looking at the cover, and with a name like Reign of Terror, I thought the songs would be darker and heavier. Conquer & Divide is still a great album if you like your metal fast, high powered, and unrelenting.

1 out of 5 stars Heard it all before, and a long time ago........2003-03-24

The first thoughts that came to mind when listening to this CD was the worst of Malmsteen with a bad Bruce Dickinson soundalike!
I also think the somgs and the melodies are a little outdated. But if you haven't heard many shred guitarists (especially from the eighties) and are not interested in commercial songs, then this CD will probably appeal to you.

4 out of 5 stars An awesome release and the best yet from Reign of Terror.......2003-02-09

Reign of Terror is Joe Stump's band project. This is the fourth disc from Reign of Terror and it again features Mike Vescera on vocals. Overall, I think the band is growing comfortable with each other and the songwriting is more focused than on the previous effort, "Sacred Ground" (which I also enjoyed). The production seems a little clearer, too, and Joe's guitar tone seems a little smoother and focused this time also. For guitar fans out there, Joe still shreds as almost no one else on the planet can. Though this is more of a vocal project, Joe still gets in one instrumental - "Seance".

If you enjoy power metal, you'll most likely find this to be a great purchase. If you need some similarities, Dio-era Rainbow mixed with perhaps a touch of earlier Blackmore-era Deep Purple might come closest. I don't say that to make anyone think this is a '70's-style disc - it's definitely got a modern sheen to it. Maybe take some of the best offerings in progressive and power metal and mix in some Blackmore might be another way to describe Reign of Terror. But regardless, it's a great album.
