A worthy addition to the country Christmas collection, this succinctly titled album combines respect for tradition with contemporary inspiration. "Winter Wonderland" features a Western swing arrangement and country references in the lyrics, "Away in a Manger" has a Cajun feel, and the "Jingle Bells" instrumental benefits from an injection of rockabilly twang (as does Paisley's revival of Buck Owens's "Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy"). Among the original material that distinguishes the collection, "Penguin, James Penguin" is like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" for the higher-tech generation, as Santa enlists a "secret-agent bird" to keep computerized tabs on who deserves what. "Born on Christmas Day" features a tape of a song Paisley wrote and initially recorded when he was 13, then segues into the artist today on the same tune. The album closes with a slam at political correctness on "Kung Pao Buckaroo Holiday," with the Kung Pao Buckaroos (a.k.a. George Jones, Bill Anderson, and "Little" Jimmy Dickens) discovering that they get bleeped every time they mention "Chxxxxmas." --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars Brad Paisley Christmas.......2007-02-07

The album is an overall great Christmas record. It combines new country with tradtional Christmas music in a "something for everyone " format, including Brad's comedy spoof on the Merry Christmas versus Happy Holidays debate.

Very relaxing - songs take one back in time. Walter Brennan brings both smiles and possibly a tear or two as stories unfold.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!!.......2007-02-19

I use to own the album: Twas the Night Before Christmas...Back Home several years ago, and it is a very good and very personal Christmas album about Country life and Farm life !!

5 out of 5 stars Walter Brennan.......2007-01-19

Listening to this is like a trip back in time for those of us who remember Walter Brennan, aka Grandpappy Amos from The Real McCoys tv show. That distinct voice of his brings tears to the eyes and a warm glow to the heat in both the Ole Rivers collection and the Christmas songs. Excellent quality.

4 out of 5 stars Pricing.......2007-01-16

I was surprised that this DVD came from England and only showed the cost in Eng pounds. Not being fluent in converting pounds to US currency I had no idea what the cost would be. Had i not have been given a $30.oo credit for first time use of the Chase Credit card, I believe the 2 DVD's would have been About $56.00. I would never pay that for the DVD's. Otherwise I am happy to have found these as they were gifts for some friends.

I wanted it for the Christmas section. It has been one of my favorite Christmas Albums for many years.

The pop Christmas album is a lost art everywhere but in the country-western arena. You don't see today's rock acts reeling off sets of religious standards the way you used to--which is probably for the best. But even within the whole country milieu, since album release schedules aren't as fast-paced and casual as they once were, a good seasonal CD is something to latch onto. What we have here is a Christmas album of solid construction, packed with traditional songs and old-Nashville chestnuts. No surprises and no smash hits, but that's not what it's about. --Gavin McNett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT COLLECTION OF COUNTRY CHRISTMAS.......2006-11-11

I've heard much said about the commercialization of Christmas. People go back and forth on the issue and, as far as I can tell, nothing, as far as music is concerned, has been effectively settled.

Enter Garth Brooks and his Christmas offering on the album, BEYOND THE SEASON. My purpose here is not to weigh in on whether Brooks should have or should not have added Christmas music to his stellar discography. Rather, looking at the album flat on, we see one of the best Christmas albums available for celebrating the season country style.

Brooks is in perfect voice as he presents traditional favorites like "Go Tell It on the Mountain", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "White Christmas" and "Silent Night." Add to that new offerings like "The Friendly Beasts" and "Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy" and you have a Christmas tradition for this season and many more to come. Great collection of country Yuletide music.

5 out of 5 stars As far as Christmas albums go, this is one of the better ones........2006-08-22

No matter who's doing the singing, most Christmas albums have the same ol' same ol' that we've all heard countless times at Christmas parties, in department stores, on Christmas movies and the radio from the end of November to the end of December. As a former salesperson in a retail store who had to listen to those songs 8 hours a day, six days a week, it's a wonder I can stand any Christmas music. At least with Garth you get a talented singer and some great versions of the same ol' same ol'. My personal favorite on the album is Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy. This is the only single artist Christmas album I own and I think it will stay that way.

1 out of 5 stars the worst of all time.......2005-11-29

brooks is way overrated no matter what he does he is only a country elvis he is only a performer not a muscian not a songrighter he is retired which is rightly so he sucks any questions

5 out of 5 stars Garth Brooks- Beyond The Seasons Album.......2005-11-28

I have listen to many Christmas albums and I have to say that this has to be the very best one that I have ever listend to. It has all of the Christmas favorites (Silient Night, Let It Snow, White Christmas)

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Christmas Record.......2005-11-26

Garth Brooks is (needless to say) one of the biggest stars ever in music. His record sales are (again needless to say) up there with Elvis, The Beatles and Elton John.

This album reached the top 3 back in Christmas 1992 and was still in the charts in the summer of 1993!! It's no surprise. This has to be one of the greatest Christmas CD's ever recorded.

The album opens with "Go Tell It On The Mountain", a story about the first ever Christmas, Brooks gives it his best shot and it works really well.

Oddly enough this album was recorded in July of 1993 in order to get it ready in time for Christmas. In an interview Brooks said he and his band put festive decorations up in the studio to make it feel like it was actually Christmas. This probably helped the sound of the album, such as the next two songs "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (an old Christmas classic) and "The Old Man's Back In Town" (an original Garth Brooks written Christmas tune) that is about another of the worlds most famous men - Santa Claus.

"The Gift" is a story of when Jesus was young, and about how people bring him gifts and the main focus is on a poor orphan girl, who ends up bringing a gift fit for the king of kings. It may sound corny, but it works really well and it is Christmas after all, so it's allowed.

The next track is "Unto You This Night". This is probably my favorite cut on the album if only for Garth's singing. He performs at his best and puts his heart and soul into this song. Backed by a gospel choir, this is very, very seasonal.

Next up, is one of the most popular songs of the season. "White Christmas". It is also one of the most covered songs of all-time. The first version was by Bing Crosby and since that time it has been recorded by almost everyone in the business from Kenny Rogers and Elvis Presley, to Orville The Duck and New Kids On The Block!

Garth's rendition of this song is first rate and even features an Elvis-like impersonation (at the very, very end), however, mostly it is pure Garth.

"The Friendly Beasts" is a story about the animals of the world recalling the story of Jesus as we get to hear various band members and co-songwriters vocal duet with Garth. This is a very interesting track, though probably not the best.

"Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy" (written by Country legend, Buck Owens) is kinda Rock N Roll. It's a nice look through a young kids eyes when he sees who he thinks is Santa putting out presents on the night before Christmas. ("Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy, Or Daddy looks a lot like him. It's not the way I had him pictured, Santa was much too thin").

The next track is "Silent Night", another one of the most popular Christmas songs and/or hymns ever. Brooks once again does a great version and even included is a recollection of his favorite Christmas. (Spoken during an instrumental break).

Mary's Dream is a 60 second instrumental (short but sweet) that then takes us to the final song, "What Child Is This". Another story of Jesus' birth and another favorite of the season.

All in all, you can't go wrong with this CD. A must for all fans of Garth, Country Music, Christian music and Christmas music.

It never snows in the Florida Keys, but as every Parrothead knows, Jimmy Buffett was born on Christmas Day 1946. His Caribbean folk tunes have always had a festive air to them, and his Coral Reefer Band tackle these holiday songs in their usual laidback style. Buffett turns out both traditional carols ("Jingle Bells" with a few tropical ad-libs) and his own myth-building originals ("A Sailor's Christmas," "Merry Christmas, Alabama"). This may not be the traditional Christmas fare of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, but for those who enjoy ocean breezes and "wasting away" to this most successful beach bum, Christmas Island is exactly what the cruise director ordered. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Different and Entertaining.......2007-01-22

Although Jimmy Buffet is not the greatest singer, he does know how to pick, write, and "put across" hits. CHRISTMAS ISLAND is one of those RARE albums that a listener enjoys from note one to note last.

It's also nice to hear a UNIQUE Christmas album for a change. I don't understand why this C.D. wasn't/isn't more popular than it is!

5 out of 5 stars I'm a Jimmy Buffet fan!.......2007-01-20

Being a Buffet fan I enjoy all the tracks on this CD. It has a nice island atmosphere to the songs and is well worth picking up!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful CD.......2007-01-04

Being a big Jimmy Buffett fan, it would be rare for me to rate anything of his less than 4. Even for non Buffett fans, or new fans, this CD is fun, different and entertaining. It has a good mix of funny songs, more traditional songs and just good ol' Jimmy flavor. I recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars I give it a 3 because I bought it for just one song.......2006-12-16

I tend to do that...like one song and ignore the rest. And the same is true here. But for the price I guess I can't knock it. I've played the same tune over and over for the past several days and now it's time to put it away for next year.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas all year long.......2006-03-23

Great covers of holiday music in Buffett style. Some of which are only available with this cd. Worth the addition to any Buffett or Christmas music collector.

Wynonna's first solo holiday album comes across as a thing of beauty, but also as something of a surprise, and not just because she tackles "Ave Maria" in Italianized Latin. Though paired with the original team behind the Judds (producer Brent Maher, musical arranger/guitarist Don Potter), the normally fiery redhead seems subdued on this collection of mostly reverent holiday fare. Throughout, Bergen White's arrangements are fresh and often sophisticated, Maher and Potter hang just the right amount of tinsel on the tree, and Wynonna's soaring soprano remains a wondrous instrument. (Even her kids, Grace and Elijah, impress on "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," the album's lightest offering.) But the down-home diva seems to hold back both passion and power, particularly on the show-your-stuff standard "O Holy Night." Where she most comes alive is on Potter's 1983 offering, "It's the Messiah," a modern take on the birth of Jesus. It's a lovely coda to this smooth, if oddly spiceless, eggnog entry. --Alanna Nash

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Different Wynonna.......2007-07-03

Up until now I have not been a big fan of Wynonna, but when I heard her on one of the TV shows singing "Ave Maria" she won me over. She sang it with the finess of a trained opera singer. This album gives an entire new depth to her singing voice. It actually brought tears to my eyes and gave me chills. Likewise, she gave a commendable performance with her renditions of "White Christmas" and "O Holy Night".
This is not the loud and brassy Country Wynonna, not that there is anything wrong with her country hits, but this is a entirely different
"Wynonna" that reveals a beauty from within that we have never seen before. GO BUY IT !!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Holiday Album.......2007-05-01

Good Holiday entertainment if you enjoy Wynona. I did think it would be more lively, though.

5 out of 5 stars A slightly biased review.......2007-05-01

Ok, upfront I'm going to admit that I know someone who worked on the album. Hearing how kind Wynonna was during the production leaves me slightly biased in the album's favor. However, the music really does stand on it's own. It's traditional Christmas music with a sort of Perry Como, Nat King Cole, "classic" sound. I like that. If you're looking for something Country, this is not the album. This is Wynonna roasting chestnuts on open fire. The first half is secular. The second half is religious. The Ave Maria is one of my favourites. Bonus points for going for the slightly more difficult prounouciations.

5 out of 5 stars love it.......2007-01-29

I have always loved Wyonna, I love Christmas music, so put them together and I had a very merry christmas.
You could tell Wyonna loves christmas music too.

Toby Keith's got a big heart, judging by the songs he's written and the songs he's chosen to sing on Christmas to Christmas. Many show concern for the homeless ("Santa I'm Right Here") or disdain for the crass commercialization of the season--told through the voice of a small girl ("Jesus Gets Jealous of Santa Claus")--and other timely sentiments. Trouble is, Keith's not a great songwriter (although he's not bad storyteller). What adds to his shortcomings as a wordsmith are his melody lines, which generally sound punch pressed from that crass commercialized Nashville mold. Keith fans will enjoy the selections, however, and nearly anyone can appreciate the fact that he chose not to make a record of the same tired old standards played in the tired old contemporary-country way. --Martin Keller

3 out of 5 stars Find a place to purchase the two or three worthwhile songs.......2007-01-12

Like a lot of Christmas albums released by "flavor of the month" entertainers, this disc really only contains two or three songs that stand out, the rest, not so hot. A real Toby Keith fan might disagree, but then again a real Toby Keith fan is probably not a Christmas music shopper. I'd recommend Santa I'm Right Here, Santa's Gonna Take It All Back, and a couple others, but that's hardly worth the price of the full disc.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST CHRISTMAS DVD YOU CAN BUY.......2007-01-09

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS VERSION OF "THE CHRISTMAS CAROL"...GEORGE C SCOTT IS ABSOLUTELY THE BEST SCROOGE...YOU MUST HAVE THIS DVD IN YOUR CHRISTMAS COLLECTION

5 out of 5 stars The best, most original Christmas album!.......2006-12-03

I just bought this album just this year. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. My thirteen-year-old daughter loves "Hot Rod Sleigh" which is a really great up-beat original Christmas song written by Toby himself. As a hopeless romantic I love "Blame It On The Mistletoe", "The Night Before Christmas", and "All I Want For Christmas". Toby also has some really great Christian Christmas music on this album. "Jesus Gets Jealous of Santa Claus" (written by Keith Urban), "Mary, It's Christmas", and "What Made the Baby Cry"- all superb songs by any standard....especially mine. There are also songs on this album that will make bring a smile to your face such as "Christmas Rock" and "Santa's Gonna Take It All Back"... so as you can plainly see there is a little something for everyone on this album.

If you are tired of the same old Christmas songs being remade over and over, and would like a completely original album then I highly recommend this album.

3 out of 5 stars Keith Urban Song on Album.......2006-12-01

Keith Urban and Vernon Rust wrote "Jesus Gets Jealous of Santa Claus", a great song on this wonderful Toby Keith Christmas. Very original, and Toby pens such great songs himself on this album.

1 out of 5 stars TUBY THE REDNECK RAINDEER........2003-11-27

If you are not a fan of TUBY then you'll totally not enjoy this poorly conceived product.

TUB does not master the vocal range, quality or style to pull off a successful country flavored holiday CD package as did MARTINA, KENNY, GARTH, REBA, ANNE MURRAY or VINCE GILL. This is unfortunately a total waste of your money.

Following The Key, Gill's hardest country album to date, the Christmas album Breath of Heaven turns so far in the other direction it hardly seems like the same man's work. Don't expect steel guitar and fiddles here: This is pure symphonic pop and a kind of ode to the cinematic string arrangements--not of Nashville, but of Nelson Riddle, or the classic seasonal recordings of Bing Crosby. The selection is tasteful if conservative, though Gill sings every chestnut expertly and even digs a bit deeper on the religious material. The only surprise is the Amy Grant-composed title cut, the album's one undeniably soulful moment. If you're looking for lush and easy-swinging holiday mood music, brimming with the sentiments of the season, you've found it. --Roy Francis Kasten

4 out of 5 stars A Breath of Heaven.......2007-01-05

Vince IMHO is Americas's premier country baladeer in general, with this compilation of him crooning popular Christmas songs, he rightly joins others (Frank, Nat,Bing etc.) that have also added to all our Christmas's over the years; this album is a must in this category of Christmas standards.

For the most part I like the blend of combining the orchestra with Vince's voice, but because I am biased to wanting to hear more Vince, on some songs the Orchestra is a bit overshadowing. I bought six for stocking stuffers :-)

5 out of 5 stars Country singer Vince uses orchestra for Christmas album.......2005-11-14

Vince, with is high tenor voice, is one of the finest singers that country music has ever poroduced - however, this album is not a country album. It is a wonderful Christmas album that should appeal to fans of easy-listening music by the likes of Andy Williams and others.

This was Vince's second Christmas album and (like the first) Vince sticks mainly to famous songs, being careful to avoid those that he included on his earlier album (Let there be peace on earth). The only unusual songs here are the title track (written by Amy Grant, who eventually married him and who has recorded three brilliant Christmas albums of her own), It's the most wonderful time of the year (which doesn't appear on Christmas albums as often as it deserves) and A cradle in Bethlehem (another excellent song that could do with greater exposure).

Vince is in superb voice throughout with the orchestra providing tasteful backing on every track. So, once you get over any initial surprise at hearing Vince supported by an orchestra instead of Nashville musicians, this album is exactly what you'd expect - brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Vince at his best.......2004-12-15

This is by far the best Christmas album I have ever heard and my wife has made me buy tons of them. I am not a great reviewer of music, I don't play or sing and I can't read music, but I know good music when I hear it. This is not your traditional country star's album. It is just one classic christmas song after another. I love the rendition of Blue Christmas.
So if you want a really good Christmas album, this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Christmas Album!.......2004-08-24

Nothing can match Vince Gill's voice. If you are considering buying a new Christmas CD this year, discover Vince. His style is smooth, clear and perfectly on key!! The spirit of Christmas comes through loud and clear.

Thanks Vince!

5 out of 5 stars A voice as clear as the stars..........2003-12-09

A little artistic license taken with my title, but for me, a deaf person who cannot hear most tones of human speech and that includes music, Vince Gill still remains one of the few very clear artists that I can hear enough when the amps are jacked up in my car. Maybe next year, I won't be able to hear him. I don't know when those tones will go, but I am so grateful for his beautiful voice on Christmas music that I love. I especially adore his spiritual music (rather than the secular stuff) and wish he would do an album of nothing but spiritual Christmas music (hint, hint). Amy Grant's Breath of Heaven is one of the most heart-tugging songs of our generation, and was most assuredly inspired. So the combination of Grant's words and Gill's voice is spectacular.

One suggestion for the music industry. You guys keep believing the stereotype that deaf and hard-of-hearing people cannot enjoy music. You are wrong...and we are a population that will buy. But I most often choose to buy music with the words in the flyer inside the CD case. I do not have the time with my work in bioethics and education to go looking all over the Internet for the lyrics.

Again, Gill's Christmas music is a definite need for your Christmas collections.

Album Description

Larry The Cable Guy is a church-goin',strip bar-lovin', know-it-all redneck —and he's coming to your house for the holidays, thanks to the Warner Bros. debut of the hilarious and politically incorrect A Very Larry Christmas. Starring on "Blue Collar TV" with Jeff Foxworthy and Bill Engvall, as he did on the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, the Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie (and soundtrack) and the forthcoming Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again (and soundtrack), Larry The Cable Guy has become one of the most popular comedians in the country. This season,"Git-R-Done!" and have A Very Larry Christmas.

We received it so fast and have enjoyed every minute of it. Larry has got to be the funniest person. He is so natural and believable.

1 out of 5 stars *Shudders*.......2006-12-27

I bought this for my dad for Christmas. What a disappointment! This cd is awful- and we normally love Larry the Cable Guy! It's like he had one night to write all his material- like he put almost no thought into it. The material is stupid even for him. And what's worse, the sound quality is horrible. You can hear people making noise in the background- laughing, I think, although who knows why.

1 out of 5 stars Do not waste your money.......2006-12-14

I use to love Larry's work, but this is the worse CD I have ever purchased. It seemed as if there was no thought into making this CD. I think he needed money for Christmas. This is my last CD from him. You are better off getting a case of beer, a can of beans, and renting a Christmas movie, you will have more laughs. Larry you did not Get-R-Done.

2 out of 5 stars Switching to Satellite.......2006-10-04

See the average star rating of the nearly 20 reviews here for this CD? 2 stars - that's about right! If you've never heard or seen "Larry the Cable Guy" performing, then I should tell you right off the bat that his humor is bawdy, very unPC, and probably a bit of a shocker for the newbie. So right now, I'm going to say if this style is not your cup of tea, consider this rating 1 star instead of 2. This album is bawdier, cruder and more unPC then his usual stuff.

For Larry enthusiasts, I would say you have to be a really loyal fan to buy this album. It is all of the above mentioned and more, but it's just not funny. Not even for Larry. No one is safe from the Cable Guy's quips, and whether you perceive it as an assault on society in general or a poke at the persona he assumes, this one is purely just insulting to the buyer for putting out the money for these boring bits.

There are 28 tracks. Larry gives his views on everything to do with the holidays from being a 'redneck Santa Clause', to non-christians taking advantage of the Holiday sales. See the buying info here to get an idea of the titles. The tracks are very short, some just a sentence or two. I hardly felt I got anywhere near my money's worth. It will never be played even a second time. Once was enough.

Unless your a Larry completist, still think fart humor is funny, and think he can do no wrong, I'd skip this one, and if you are still thinking about it, I will tell you the one good thing about it is that the quality of the CD is Very Good(the only reason I felt it warranted 2 stars).

So sorry Larry the Cable Guy, even tongue in cheek this one just didn't cut it. And worse then not funny, and not getting my money's worth, when you thought lusting after a 14 year old girl was funny, you lost me. Guess I will be switching to the satellite guy.....Laurie

Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, two of country's most loved (or least liked, depending on how you look at them) stars join forces for a Christmas album that is surprisingly fluff free. There are the usual suspects here--a cozy "Winter Wonderland," a somber "Silent Night"--plus some touching curiosities, like "The Greatest Gift of All" and the title track. Of course there are the required romantic numbers since this is a duet album, but they're not as gratuitous as one might fear. Dolly does a fine job of keeping the yee-haw factor to a minimum, and Kenny doesn't try to compete with her on the singer-as-storyteller front. All in all their voices complement each other quite well, and the arrangements are first rate. Here's one holiday collection that might win a few converts. --Steve Gdula

I have a copy of this in the old record album format but I couldn't listen to it anymore because it became warped. I liked it so much that I just had to buy the cd to replace the record. I enjoy the fact that it is not all traditional christmas music and Kenny and Dolly sound so good together.

5 out of 5 stars Movie.......2006-12-11

What was the name of the movie this CD goes with. A Christmas to Remember or Once upon a Christmas? I wish I could find this movie or at least find out if it was going to be on television this season. It has been many years since I have seen it but remember it was good.

5 out of 5 stars A Christimas Favorite.......2006-10-05

I remember when this album came out, I bought the album and cassette tape and watched the TV special. I am so glad it is on CD now, this has always been a favorite Christmas album of mine. "The Greatest Gift of All" is one of the most beautiful songs around. I have seen the TV show on PBS during Christmas time. Hope they show it again this year!

5 out of 5 stars Christmas with Kenny Rogers.......2005-11-27

Kenny Rogers has recorded 5 christmas albums since the 1980s, this was his second. It's classic christmas that only very few singers can do. Kenny Rogers is the best.
