A worthy addition to the country Christmas collection, this succinctly titled album combines respect for tradition with contemporary inspiration. "Winter Wonderland" features a Western swing arrangement and country references in the lyrics, "Away in a Manger" has a Cajun feel, and the "Jingle Bells" instrumental benefits from an injection of rockabilly twang (as does Paisley's revival of Buck Owens's "Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy"). Among the original material that distinguishes the collection, "Penguin, James Penguin" is like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" for the higher-tech generation, as Santa enlists a "secret-agent bird" to keep computerized tabs on who deserves what. "Born on Christmas Day" features a tape of a song Paisley wrote and initially recorded when he was 13, then segues into the artist today on the same tune. The album closes with a slam at political correctness on "Kung Pao Buckaroo Holiday," with the Kung Pao Buckaroos (a.k.a. George Jones, Bill Anderson, and "Little" Jimmy Dickens) discovering that they get bleeped every time they mention "Chxxxxmas." --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

The pop Christmas album is a lost art everywhere but in the country-western arena. You don't see today's rock acts reeling off sets of religious standards the way you used to--which is probably for the best. But even within the whole country milieu, since album release schedules aren't as fast-paced and casual as they once were, a good seasonal CD is something to latch onto. What we have here is a Christmas album of solid construction, packed with traditional songs and old-Nashville chestnuts. No surprises and no smash hits, but that's not what it's about. --Gavin McNettCustomer Reviews:
A GREAT COLLECTION OF COUNTRY CHRISTMAS.......2006-11-11
Enter Garth Brooks and his Christmas offering on the album, BEYOND THE SEASON. My purpose here is not to weigh in on whether Brooks should have or should not have added Christmas music to his stellar discography. Rather, looking at the album flat on, we see one of the best Christmas albums available for celebrating the season country style.
Brooks is in perfect voice as he presents traditional favorites like "Go Tell It on the Mountain", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "White Christmas" and "Silent Night." Add to that new offerings like "The Friendly Beasts" and "Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy" and you have a Christmas tradition for this season and many more to come. Great collection of country Yuletide music.

A Classic Christmas Record.......2005-11-26
This album reached the top 3 back in Christmas 1992 and was still in the charts in the summer of 1993!! It's no surprise. This has to be one of the greatest Christmas CD's ever recorded.
The album opens with "Go Tell It On The Mountain", a story about the first ever Christmas, Brooks gives it his best shot and it works really well.
Oddly enough this album was recorded in July of 1993 in order to get it ready in time for Christmas. In an interview Brooks said he and his band put festive decorations up in the studio to make it feel like it was actually Christmas. This probably helped the sound of the album, such as the next two songs "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (an old Christmas classic) and "The Old Man's Back In Town" (an original Garth Brooks written Christmas tune) that is about another of the worlds most famous men - Santa Claus.
"The Gift" is a story of when Jesus was young, and about how people bring him gifts and the main focus is on a poor orphan girl, who ends up bringing a gift fit for the king of kings. It may sound corny, but it works really well and it is Christmas after all, so it's allowed.
The next track is "Unto You This Night". This is probably my favorite cut on the album if only for Garth's singing. He performs at his best and puts his heart and soul into this song. Backed by a gospel choir, this is very, very seasonal.
Next up, is one of the most popular songs of the season. "White Christmas". It is also one of the most covered songs of all-time. The first version was by Bing Crosby and since that time it has been recorded by almost everyone in the business from Kenny Rogers and Elvis Presley, to Orville The Duck and New Kids On The Block!
Garth's rendition of this song is first rate and even features an Elvis-like impersonation (at the very, very end), however, mostly it is pure Garth.
"The Friendly Beasts" is a story about the animals of the world recalling the story of Jesus as we get to hear various band members and co-songwriters vocal duet with Garth. This is a very interesting track, though probably not the best.
"Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy" (written by Country legend, Buck Owens) is kinda Rock N Roll. It's a nice look through a young kids eyes when he sees who he thinks is Santa putting out presents on the night before Christmas. ("Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy, Or Daddy looks a lot like him. It's not the way I had him pictured, Santa was much too thin").
The next track is "Silent Night", another one of the most popular Christmas songs and/or hymns ever. Brooks once again does a great version and even included is a recollection of his favorite Christmas. (Spoken during an instrumental break).
Mary's Dream is a 60 second instrumental (short but sweet) that then takes us to the final song, "What Child Is This". Another story of Jesus' birth and another favorite of the season.
All in all, you can't go wrong with this CD. A must for all fans of Garth, Country Music, Christian music and Christmas music.

It never snows in the Florida Keys, but as every Parrothead knows, Jimmy Buffett was born on Christmas Day 1946. His Caribbean folk tunes have always had a festive air to them, and his Coral Reefer Band tackle these holiday songs in their usual laidback style. Buffett turns out both traditional carols ("Jingle Bells" with a few tropical ad-libs) and his own myth-building originals ("A Sailor's Christmas," "Merry Christmas, Alabama"). This may not be the traditional Christmas fare of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, but for those who enjoy ocean breezes and "wasting away" to this most successful beach bum, Christmas Island is exactly what the cruise director ordered. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:

Wynonna's first solo holiday album comes across as a thing of beauty, but also as something of a surprise, and not just because she tackles "Ave Maria" in Italianized Latin. Though paired with the original team behind the Judds (producer Brent Maher, musical arranger/guitarist Don Potter), the normally fiery redhead seems subdued on this collection of mostly reverent holiday fare. Throughout, Bergen White's arrangements are fresh and often sophisticated, Maher and Potter hang just the right amount of tinsel on the tree, and Wynonna's soaring soprano remains a wondrous instrument. (Even her kids, Grace and Elijah, impress on "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," the album's lightest offering.) But the down-home diva seems to hold back both passion and power, particularly on the show-your-stuff standard "O Holy Night." Where she most comes alive is on Potter's 1983 offering, "It's the Messiah," a modern take on the birth of Jesus. It's a lovely coda to this smooth, if oddly spiceless, eggnog entry. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:

Toby Keith's got a big heart, judging by the songs he's written and the songs he's chosen to sing on Christmas to Christmas. Many show concern for the homeless ("Santa I'm Right Here") or disdain for the crass commercialization of the season--told through the voice of a small girl ("Jesus Gets Jealous of Santa Claus")--and other timely sentiments. Trouble is, Keith's not a great songwriter (although he's not bad storyteller). What adds to his shortcomings as a wordsmith are his melody lines, which generally sound punch pressed from that crass commercialized Nashville mold. Keith fans will enjoy the selections, however, and nearly anyone can appreciate the fact that he chose not to make a record of the same tired old standards played in the tired old contemporary-country way. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:

Following The Key, Gill's hardest country album to date, the Christmas album Breath of Heaven turns so far in the other direction it hardly seems like the same man's work. Don't expect steel guitar and fiddles here: This is pure symphonic pop and a kind of ode to the cinematic string arrangements--not of Nashville, but of Nelson Riddle, or the classic seasonal recordings of Bing Crosby. The selection is tasteful if conservative, though Gill sings every chestnut expertly and even digs a bit deeper on the religious material. The only surprise is the Amy Grant-composed title cut, the album's one undeniably soulful moment. If you're looking for lush and easy-swinging holiday mood music, brimming with the sentiments of the season, you've found it. --Roy Francis KastenCustomer Reviews:
A Breath of Heaven.......2007-01-05
For the most part I like the blend of combining the orchestra with Vince's voice, but because I am biased to wanting to hear more Vince, on some songs the Orchestra is a bit overshadowing. I bought six for stocking stuffers :-)
Country singer Vince uses orchestra for Christmas album.......2005-11-14
This was Vince's second Christmas album and (like the first) Vince sticks mainly to famous songs, being careful to avoid those that he included on his earlier album (Let there be peace on earth). The only unusual songs here are the title track (written by Amy Grant, who eventually married him and who has recorded three brilliant Christmas albums of her own), It's the most wonderful time of the year (which doesn't appear on Christmas albums as often as it deserves) and A cradle in Bethlehem (another excellent song that could do with greater exposure).
Vince is in superb voice throughout with the orchestra providing tasteful backing on every track. So, once you get over any initial surprise at hearing Vince supported by an orchestra instead of Nashville musicians, this album is exactly what you'd expect - brilliant.
Vince at his best.......2004-12-15
So if you want a really good Christmas album, this is for you.
Great Christmas Album!.......2004-08-24

A voice as clear as the stars..........2003-12-09
One suggestion for the music industry. You guys keep believing the stereotype that deaf and hard-of-hearing people cannot enjoy music. You are wrong...and we are a population that will buy. But I most often choose to buy music with the words in the flyer inside the CD case. I do not have the time with my work in bioethics and education to go looking all over the Internet for the lyrics.
Again, Gill's Christmas music is a definite need for your Christmas collections.

For Larry enthusiasts, I would say you have to be a really loyal fan to buy this album. It is all of the above mentioned and more, but it's just not funny. Not even for Larry. No one is safe from the Cable Guy's quips, and whether you perceive it as an assault on society in general or a poke at the persona he assumes, this one is purely just insulting to the buyer for putting out the money for these boring bits.
There are 28 tracks. Larry gives his views on everything to do with the holidays from being a 'redneck Santa Clause', to non-christians taking advantage of the Holiday sales. See the buying info here to get an idea of the titles. The tracks are very short, some just a sentence or two. I hardly felt I got anywhere near my money's worth. It will never be played even a second time. Once was enough.
Unless your a Larry completist, still think fart humor is funny, and think he can do no wrong, I'd skip this one, and if you are still thinking about it, I will tell you the one good thing about it is that the quality of the CD is Very Good(the only reason I felt it warranted 2 stars).
So sorry Larry the Cable Guy, even tongue in cheek this one just didn't cut it. And worse then not funny, and not getting my money's worth, when you thought lusting after a 14 year old girl was funny, you lost me. Guess I will be switching to the satellite guy.....Laurie

Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, two of country's most loved (or least liked, depending on how you look at them) stars join forces for a Christmas album that is surprisingly fluff free. There are the usual suspects here--a cozy "Winter Wonderland," a somber "Silent Night"--plus some touching curiosities, like "The Greatest Gift of All" and the title track. Of course there are the required romantic numbers since this is a duet album, but they're not as gratuitous as one might fear. Dolly does a fine job of keeping the yee-haw factor to a minimum, and Kenny doesn't try to compete with her on the singer-as-storyteller front. All in all their voices complement each other quite well, and the arrangements are first rate. Here's one holiday collection that might win a few converts. --Steve GdulaCustomer Reviews:
