Yelling at Mary

It's hard to avoid the echoes of Sheryl Crow and Nanci Griffith in Mary Karlzen's Yelling at Mary. As with Crow and Griffith, Karlzen's reedy soprano and acoustic guitar are backed by folk-rock arrangements on songs which are convincingly personal and irrepressibly melodic. On her major-label debut after two indie releases, though, Karlzen never sounds like an imitator; she seems more like the equal of Crow and Griffith. If you listen closely, in fact, you'll find that Karlzen rocks harder and more infectiously than her better-known colleagues. The album is full of catchy melodies so closely fitted to a pressing rhythm that it's hard to tell one from the other. The result is a fistful of potential hit singles, most notably "Everybody's Sleeping" and "Another Town, Another Place." The first single, however, is the exuberant love song, "I'd Be Lying," which was lifted intact from Karlzen's '93 EP, Hide. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars An Underrated Gem.......2007-05-10

This is a great album and I agree with the prior reviewer that it it is one that I listen to over and over, even 10 years later. While he labels it power pop, she has a diverse style and I think the album includes alt-country, folk, and rock. There are also a number of prominent guest muscians. This album and artist deserve a wider audience

5 out of 5 stars One of the great lost albums.......2005-06-25

When this CD came out I was a subscriber to Stereo Review and CD Review. I figured if both magazines gave a new recording a best of the month review, it was probably worth checking out. I had never heard of Mary Karlzen at the time, but the reviews were great, so I bought it. In fact, I ended up buying lots of copies for other people. Great power pop, I still play it frequently and I think that it is one of the finer recordings in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars A true gem.......2006-12-19

This album is full of tight, distinct and interesting songs. I bought it when it came out and it sounds as good today as when it came out. It really holds up. This is one of my "go to" CD's when I know I want to hear good upbeat music. Check it out for her unique voice, solid songwriting and infectious melodies. Can't understand why she isn't better known.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2002-03-05

I heard mary on the radio a few years back and bought the disk. I think it is a great album in the classic sense. I'm on the site looking for other work, yet see none. Too bad!

5 out of 5 stars The Best CD You Haven't Listened To.......2001-07-12

I bought this album back in 1996 because of a review I read in the Boston Globe. I still play it and I'll never understand why it didn't garner radio airplay or make Mary the breakout artist she deserved. Clever, infectious, melodic, country-rock-pop and a great supporting line up including Kay Hanley, Jackson Browne and David Hildago. If your a fan of this genre then you owe it to yourself to check it out.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Finest.......2001-07-04

Too often the best music and the best artists never make the radio airwaves. Mary Karlzen's album is among the best work in pop music in the last 15 years. My CD collection numbers more than 700 and I consider Yelling at Mary to be one of the best in the collection. Pop music melodies with deep, emotional lyrics make this album a real treasure.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Lost Masterpieces.......1999-07-07

This is power pop at its finest. It is a tragedy that Mary Karlzen wasn't successful with this record--it got great reviews, but never sold. I still play it regularly.
