What can I say; you either love Dolly Parton or not. Me I love her and could not think of a better way to get a lot of her hits other than the "Ultimate Dolly Parton" CD. Buy this one for you and your friends, you will not be sorry.

I haven't taken the CD out of the player since I received it 3+ weeks ago. It reminds me of why Dolly will eternally be country. A definite must for any country music lover.

An outstanding compilation.......2003-10-13

The standard version of Ultimate Dolly Parton available through normal USA outlets is a single CD with 20 tracks. That CD contains nineteen number one country hits plus Coat of many colors, which only made number four. All 20 songs are included on this 36 track double CD, which is much more interesting because it contains many other songs that are regarded as Dolly classics. I will devote most of this review to the sixteen tracks not available on the standard CD, so that you can decide if you want to pay extra for them.

Dumb blonde was the first country hit that Dolly had as a singer. Her voice had a lot of vibrato in those days, something I like but a lot of people don't. Dolly worked hard to sweeten her voice and you can trace the changes in the first half of this collection.

Just because I'm a woman is a great song about how men get away with things that women don't. My blue ridge mountain boy is my all-time favorite Dolly song - it is a classic folk-country song about a girl who has left the country for the city and misses her country boy. Mule skinner blues is a cover of a Jimmie Rodgers classic on which Dolly demonstrates that she can yodel superbly. Touch your woman is a great mid-tempo romantic song. My Tennessee mountain home takes a rose-tinted view of Dolly's childhood, painting a picture of rural bliss. The seeker is another great romantic song, though it can also be interpreted as a gospel song. We used to is a reflective song that could be bitter but isn't.

All I can do is an up-temp song to get the toes tapping. Light of a clear blue morning shows Dolly beginning to move away from her traditional sounds. Two doors down, Single women and Heartbreak express are among her best pop-country songs. Save the last dance for me is a cover of the old Drifters classic. God won't get you is a Dolly song from the Rhinestone soundtrack. Rocking years, a duet with Ricky van Shelton, was Dolly's last number one country hit.

Even 36 tracks can't include everything though I will admit to being particularly disappointed at the omission of Yellow roses, a number one country hit and one of my favorite Dolly songs. Other omissions include Real love (a duet with Kenny Rogers), Applejack, Baby I'm burning, Think about love and Do I ever cross your mind.

This is a much more interesting collection than the standard 20 track single CD.

Footnote - in 2005, this compilation was officially released in America with one extra track (Shine) as a double-CD titled "Essential Dolly Parton" so you no longer have to pay the import price for this set.

Nice Collection.......2001-01-22

Ultimate Collection is yet another greatest hits album in the Dolly Parton catalogue. 30 tracks of Dolly's hits over her career of 30+ years in country music. The first disc lends itself to many of her country hits, and some duets with Porter Wagoner, while the second disc finds more of Dolly's pop hits. There are a few gems in this collection: Dolly's cover of Great Balls of Fire, and the Holy Roller mix of Peace Train. This is a nice collection that will tide fans over until we are treated to a Dolly box set.

pretty good.......2000-01-20

The first cd of this two cd set is a great selection of Dolly's early country years and her first pop excursions. The second cd has far too much of her forgettable pop stuff - most of which you can find in plenty of other compilations - but it at least finishes with a dance remix of "Peace Train", which is not only a fantastic song but actually has some dance floor credibility.

Even with 30 tracks, though, the running times of these cd's barely break 45 minutes each (the second is slightly longer), which is a little miserly given the mountain of outstanding early material remaining unreleased.

Nice overview of Dolly's career taking the bulk of the sets from her RCA years + a few Columbia hits -- the real find on this 2cd set is the inclusion of the Flip Hit, "Great Balls of Fire" on cd.

Best single-CD Dolly compilation in the world - so far.......2002-12-08

It is not possible to fit all Dolly's important songs on two CD's, never mind one, but this is the best single-CD collection I've yet seen. Originally a full-price TV advertised album, it is still widely available in the UK, now at mid-price.

Thirty years of Dolly music are represented here, from 1967's Dumb blonde (although as Dolly herself once quipped - she ain't dumb and she ain't blonde) to 1997's Just when I needed you most.

In between are many Dolly classics - Jolene, I will always love you (two versions), Here you come again, 9 to 5, Islands in the stream and my Tennessee mountain home among them. I've never been keen on Heartbreaker and would have preferred the brilliant Baby I'm burning from that album. Other notable omissions include Bargain store, The seeker, Two doors down and Old flames - but like I said, you can't put everything on a single CD.

As compensation, this does include Applejack (one of my favorite Dolly tracks, which does not appear on these compilations as often as I think it deserves), a duet with Porter Wagoner (a great version of Last thing on my mind), her version of In the ghetto and a little-heard duet with Willie Nelson (actually a sixties Dolly recording with Willie's voice added a few years later).

You also get some of her best Sony/Columbia recordings, including Yellow roses and Eaglee when she flies, though missing out Romeo. ...
