Rebecca Lynn Howard's bio describes the 20-year-old Kentuckian as working at her career since age 10. That may seem like hype in a time when karaoke singers land Nashville record deals, but there's some substance here. Reba, Lila McCann, John Michael Montgomery, and Howard's fellow Kentuckian Patty Loveless have already covered her original songs, and her voice possesses the searing, primal soulfulness of Loveless or even a Dolly Parton. She fully reveals her gifts on the sweetly vulnerable "You're Not a Memory Yet" and two snappy, spare honky-tonkers: "Melancholy Blue" (penned by Tom Douglas and Harlan Howard) and "Was It As Hard to Be Together." Of course, producer Mark Wright goes and shoehorns her into predictable, radio-friendly, assembly-line Nashville formulas much of the time, epitomized by the gimmicky "Heartsounds" and "Believe It or Not," a numbingly dull, Whitney Houston/Celine Dion-inspired power ballad. Howard has real potential, if she could avoid conforming to Music Row's same old same old. --Rich Kienzle

Rebecca Lynn Howard's impressive debut positioned the Eastern Kentucky native as both a Patty Loveless acolyte and a formidable songwriter, contributing "I Don't Paint Myself into Corners" to the Trisha Yearwood songbook. Now comes her follow-up, which makes concessions to country's increasing inclination toward pure pop, even as it also includes some of the staunchest hillbilly music to come out of Nashville in years. "Jesus and Bartenders," Larry Cordle and Leslie Satcher's exquisite honky-tonk paean to both, weighs in as the album's biggest throwback to True Country, while Howard's own "It Didn't Look Like Alcohol," a poignant song of a man's struggle with unseen demons, comes in a close second. These exceptionally well crafted tunes seem even more extraordinary when bumped up against such forgettable pop as "Life Had Other Plans" and "Memorized." But the big-voiced Howard builds a bridge between the two styles on the title song, in which a wife reels from her husband's confession of infidelity. More than any other recent album, Forgive epitomizes country's current schizophrenia. There's no question which format will burn in your memory, even if it's the other that will likely make Rebecca Lynn Howard a star. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-04-23
Magnificient Achievement.......2007-02-09
The greatest music evokes intensely personal responses like, "I felt you were singing about my life," and this one does it. There is a conviction in her voice and lyrics reminicient of fellow Kentuckian Patty Loveless. These two songbirds share a connection, Rebecca sings on Patty's Mountain Soul, a recommendation for anyone who likes Forgive. RLH claims Whitney Houston and Celine Dion as influences, but they don't have the conviction or soul that she has. Patty, Loretta, and Dolly may be more appropriate comparisons.I recommend this CD highly, and any record company troubles RLH experiences erode any faith I may have left in the Nashville music establishment. I hope for more of this in the future.

Magical debut album from a Patty Loveless fan.......2005-07-25
Rebecca co-wrote most of the songs here, at a time when she was (I think) still a teenager. No doubt this explains the upbeat nature of most of the songs, since she won't have suffered too many of the problems that usually come with age and experience. Even the love songs are generally full of optimism and hope although she occasionally shows that she can do sad songs too - Melancholy blue (one of the few songs that Rebecca didn't co-write) proves that. Of the songs that Rebecca co-wrote, three songs (Was it as hard to be together, You're not a memory yet, Believe it or not) show that there is some sadness in Rebecca's life - or else she wrote these songs by observing what other people go through - but the rest of the album has a really upbeat feel to it that those four songs cannot dampen.
Rebecca shows in a couple of songs that she in an outdoor type. You might expect this of a country singer but so many of them like the city life these days. In one song (Move me), Rebecca complains about yet another Friday night dinner and movie - what she really wants is to go swimming in an icy creek, to go hang gliding and bungee jumping and a whole list of other outdoor activities. Another song (Out here in the water) is about going fishing in the lake.
Among the upbeat love songs are Jesus Daddy and you, When my dreams come true, Heart sounds and You're real, all of which are really happy songs. But the best songs of are two up-tempo songs to get those toes tapping - the aforementioned Dancing in God's country and the final track, Tennessee in my windshield, in which Rebecca sings about leaving her Kentucky home to pursue a music career in Nashville, driving down Route 65 with a Patty Loveless record playing on the radio.
As an upbeat contemporary country album that traditional country fans can appreciate, this one is hard to beat. Rebecca may not be able to make up her mind what color her hair should be (the booklet shows pictures of her with hair of different colors) but she started her career with an outstanding country album - one that her hero, Patty Loveless, would surely approve of.
Someone got fired over this one.......2005-06-08
And the shame of it all is that he should be rich; what a great cd, what a voice, and it's sad it didn't go farther than it did. I would fire lots of people on the label, but not her. She is A+.
GREAT!.......2003-03-29
