5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The movie version of The Rocky Horror Show has turned into such an enduring cult success that it has pretty much obliterated the fact that it all started with a stage show. And now Richard O'Brien's musical is back on stage, where some say it truly belongs (it was nominated for the category Best Revival of a Musical in the 2001 Tony Awards). With a great cast that includes Dick Cavett, Alice Ripley (Janet), Tom Hewitt (Frank 'N' Furter), and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Magenta), the revival fires on all cylinders. Note that while Joan Jett was in the cast as Columbia, she's not on the CD (Kristen Lee Kelly is). But Lea DeLaria, last seen stealing the show in On the Town, more than compensates by playing both Eddie (Meat Loaf in the movie!) and Dr. Scott--and doing great by both. As a bonus, the song "Once in a While" is back after being cut from the movie. Bursting with energy, this recording brings the rock back in Rocky. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This was the first Rocky Horror album I've ever listened to besides the movie soundtrack. Despite the lack of Joan Jett as Columbia and the 2nd Usherette, this album is sweet. Daphne-Rubin Vega is perfect as Magenta. And Tom Hewlett 's interpretation as Frank N. Furter is just in sync with the character. But he's still no Tim Curry. And the rest of the cast is sublime. And with Dick Cavett as the Criminologist and famed lesbian comedienne Lea DeLaria as both Eddie and Dr. Scott is just excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Thougt You Were The Candyman Didn't ya freggy!.......2006-06-22

I thought that this was gonna be just another edition of the Rocky Horror Show. But boy was I wrong.I loved it they really modernized and gave it more of a Rock flavor than in the original play which was more pop.I just loved how they had the Overture and Space shipa partof the cd.They really recreated great for broadway. When i heard that broadway was doing Then Rocky Horror Show I didn't know what to think.Because Rocky Horror had been an off-broadway show for many years. The thought of it being onBroadway was just amazing Because people back in the 70's and 80's always thought that The Rocky Horror Show was much too trashy to be put on Broadway.Because you always think about broadway plays as being classy and eligent. They didn't want a play about Sex and Horror and Gay Transvestites. But this was just a head turner.I loved it.It's definitely 5 stars. The cd quality was great. It was so professionally done and it was great.I think any RHS Fan will love it.This was no candyman!

4 out of 5 stars The Rockiest Recording to Date.......2006-06-07

This 2000 Broadway revival of the cult classic THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW boasts a completely re-vamped orchestration of Richard O'Brien's score. This is certainly the most rock-fused version of these songs to date, and right from the "Overture" the listener can assume this. Many may not be able to accept this harder, bolder score and I myself am a bit skeptical, considering the more piano-driven and sci-fi sounding orchestrations of the film soundtrack or Roxy cast recording. However, it is so interesting to hear these songs done like this that I cannot help but enjoy it. The performances are half-and-half. Daphne Rubin-Vega belts out the opening number in that great gravelly voice she has, and Raul Esparzza sends chills down my spine every time I hear his two great solo moments ("The darkness must flow down the river...." and "Frank 'N' Furter, it's all over..."). Sebastian LaCause is amazing as Rocky, as thankless a part that is. Eddie and Dr. Scott being portrayed by a woman (Lea DeLaria) is one of the strangest casting decisions ever and is too distracting to be able to even listen to her (his? I don't know!!!) songs: "Hot Patootie" and "Eddie's Teddy." Tom Hewitt does his best as Frank 'N' Furter, but the character was so well defined by Tim Curry in the film (one of the most underrated performances ever) that one can't help but ignore him. I'd say that this recording is something every ROCKY HORROR fan should listen to; it just all depends on whether you like the new or original orchestrations.

3 out of 5 stars Good recording, bad show........2006-03-10

Rocky Horror is an American institution. It's indelible, unforgettable, and entirely unique. But without the audience participation, the show is revealed - it's simply not very good. It's a passable (if dated) parody of '50s B-movies with a transvestite main character and some halfway decent songs. The show lives with and dies without an audience. The lyrics, the characters - nothing is half as fun without the audience throwing and shouting and bantering right along.

That said, this is a VERY good recording of what's there. Tom Hewitt does as good a job as anyone trying to fill Tim Curry's sequined heels, and brings some nice twists to the table instead of going the Curry-imitation route. Raul Esparza as Riff-Raff is electric - his rendition of "Time Warp" is unlike anything else you're likely to hear on a cast recording. He blasts it right into outer space, screaming like the world's going to end. Daphne Rubin-Vega is plenty of fun as Columbia, giving a nicely sinuous and raw-edged sexiness to the role. The orchestra gives their all to the new arrangements, and they sound crystal clear.

It's definitely the best recording of the show available, even sans Tim Curry.

3 out of 5 stars Oh Daphne!.......2005-12-29

Most of the reviews have it right here - this production wasn't really Rocky at it's best. That being said, I must say that Daphne Ruben-Vega as magenta is probably one of the most interesting, refreshing, and note worthy things about this recording. Very cool in that regard.

That's All...

A string band with a mean streak and a standup bass fashioned from a gas tank, Wichita's picking punks earned their reputation by beating tradition into submission. But with Never Make It Home, their third effort, Split Lip discover that playing it (comparatively) straight can yield satisfying results. This most welcome surprise is spurred by the emergence of Wayne Gottstine, the quartet's flashy but always solid mandolinist, as a stellar singer and songwriter to rival bandleader Kirk Rundstrom. Fans of the Gourds' Jimmy Smith will find a lot to like in Gottstine's handful of tunes, from the jaunty "Movin' to Virginia" to the mopey "Used to Call Me Baby." Elsewhere, Split Lip prove they can still play like they're blowing a tollbooth, especially on another Gottstine original, "River," and the disc's pair of covers, "Love Please Come Home" and "Day the Train Jumped the Tracks." --Anders Smith-Lindall

Album Description

After a bit of tinkering these bluegrass outlaws have emerged from the garage soot-smeared, short of temper and ready for beer with their third CD. Steel yourself for the trademark souped up hillbilly barrage. "Never Make it Home" features SLR's bluegrass underground sound, tick-tight playing and even a few sing-along anthems.

Never make it home is my favorite Split Lip album. The title track is awesome. See them live... you won't believe it!

5 out of 5 stars Bistering!!!.......2004-08-31

This ain't your grandpappy's whiling away the nights on the porch bluegrass. This is strap yerself in for a ride at the speed of light that you'll never forget. If your toes don't tap then see a dr. cuz you're most likely dead!!

4 out of 5 stars I guess I don't get it..........2004-08-06

I came to SLR being an avid bluegrass fan, as well as roots/country rock (early Grateful Dead, rockabilly, John Hartford, Doc Watson, SCOTS, you name it) and after two dedicated listens this disc just leaves me a little cold. I gave it 4 stars for the blistering performances, both vocal and instrumental, of songs that I just couldn't make myself care about. The lyrics are vague and never really told me a story I could visualize in any real sense. (No matter how hard I rubbed on the glass, I still couldn't see through it, if you take my meaning.) I guess I could sum it all by saying they use the bluegrass format to sing ordinary, uninspired rock. Albeit with tight harmony and hot instrumentals. Is it country rock or odd bluegrass? Neither fish nor fowl. I'm going to keep at it - maybe I'll "get it" at some point.

5 out of 5 stars Burning Kansas.......2004-05-17

Kansas may be the flatest state in the Union, but they've produced some sharp artists through the years. Split Lip Rayfield is just one such, a kick-ass bluegrass ensemble that plays traditional music with one of the sharpest edges out there today. In a day and age when Oh Brother Where Art Thou threatens to trap bluegrass in a Depression-era museum case, Split Lip Rayfield plays string band music for the new milennium.

The only unifyning theme on this album is the undisputed picking power of the artists. It's all string music--no keys, no drums, just strings. But there's no risk of it all sounding the same. From upbeat rockers like Kiss of Death to honky-tonk beauties like Drink Lotsa Whiskey, country chestnuts like Love Please Come Home to iconoclasty like Dime Story Cowboy, this album never gives you a chance to take the band for granted.

Split Lip Rayfield is famous for their live shows, and of course an album can never match up to that. Still, this is shimmy music for Hell's own square-dance. If you want a string band album that will make you jump out of your chair and scream for more, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Their Best To Date.......2002-11-18

The way Kirk Rundstrom and Wayne Gottstine trade greats songs on "Never Make It Home" reminds me of the way Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir used to alternate classic tunes on Dead albums. And to carry the analogy further, this disc may be SLR's "Workingman's Dead." A real turning point for the band. Also, hat's off to Eric Mardis for contributing the best track on the disc -- "Kiss of Death." This is SLR's best yet. Buy it.

Album Description

The jaunty Gene DePaul score for the musical play "Lil' Abner" based on the comic strip by Al Capp is heard instrumentally - and it's quite a show! "Broadway Bouquet" from 1965 is an important part of the famed Faith "string" album series - perhaps the pinnacle of his rich string sound that spanned gorgeous melodies and counterlines across sections of the large orchestra. (Bill Halvorsen)

I bought this solely for "Once Upon a Time", and was dismayed that the CD is mono, not stereo. The quality of the recordings leaves much to be desired, as many of them lack the pristine quality I'm used to on a CD.

5 out of 5 stars classic arrangements by the classic gentlemen ~ Percy Faith.......2004-02-16

Two albums from the Columbia Records people blending different decades "Li'l Abner" (originally released CL 955 in 1956) and "Broadway Bouquet" (originally released LS 9156 in 1965), sharing the unmistakable style of the "Percy Faith Touch" ~ you know in an instant you're in for the best of the best ~ Duke Ellington was so taken with Faith's arrangements, that he would give anything to be able to arrange in that fashion.

Let's begin with "IT'S A TYPICAL DAY" along with "LOVE IN A HOME", both from "Li'l Abner", wonderful opening counterparts and the stirring arrangements by Maestro Percy Faith ~ "JUBILATON T. CORNPONE", uplifting cue that will keep bouncing in your head for hours, maybe even days ~ "IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS", one of the forgettable tunes from the show ~ "NAMELY YOU", has to be the best and favorite song of the Johnny Mercer and Gene De Paul score ~ by the way, these two composers penned the lively screen musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", both scores were sure winners from two talented songwriters, Percy Faith steps up to the podium and takes it to another level.

Now with "Broadway Bouquet", we have perfection within the realm of lush arranging, so flawless "HELLO, DOLLY!" (Jerry Herman), "ONCE UPON A TIME" (Adams/Strouse), "SOMEWHERE" (Sondheim/Bernstein), "SUNRISE, SUNSET/FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" (Harnick/Bock) (one of my all-time favorites, can't get enough of this score), "WHO CAN I TURN TO (WHEN NOBODY NEEDS ME)" (Bricusse/Newley), "A QUIET THING" (Ebb/Kander), "MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY" (Comden/Green/Styne), "WHAT KIND OF FOOL AM I?" (Bricusse/Newley) (two of the best songwriters in the business), "LONG AGO" (David Heneker), "THE SWEETEST SOUNDS" (Richard Rodgers) (his credit of compositions goes through the ceiling, will never be another like 'em), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart) (a wonderful classic that is still popular by today's standards), "THEME FROM "GOLDEN BOY" (Adams Strouse) (another team of composers that have made an impact on the Broadway scene) ~ an example of the "Percy Faith Touch", so effortless, you feel like you're floating on a cloud ~ falls into Percy's many albums of fabulous string arrangements, they grabbed the attention of the listener and wouldn't let go. Can't think of any other arranger/composer who left such a great legacy as this man!

Highly recommend to ALL fans of Percy Faith ~ thanks to Collectables for releasing this collection from the vaults of Columbia Records ~ so listeners sit back, relax and enjoy a small part of Maestro Percy Faith's fabulous career!

5 out of 5 stars Brought back tears to my eyes.......2007-01-12

My buddies and I listened to Joe in Vietnam, we just seemed to relate to him. This album is filled with so much good music, a lot of it has been recorded by many other artists and topped the charts. When I first heard Don't if make you want to go home,I had a little moisture build up. If you are nostalgic and liked Joe South this is the CD for you. I guarantee you'll love it.

      5 out of 5 stars Joe South-Still The Best.......2006-04-16

Way back, when I was 16 years old, I discovered Joe South. After I heard "Games People Play", and then later, "Walk A Mile In My Shoes ", I knew that I had to purchase all of this artist's albums. He struck a chord that reverberated in me everything I was feeling during those tumultuous teenage years. Needless to say, that I have never lost my admiration for this incredible artist's talent and soulful renderings for songs that he himself composed. Joe South was truly an original. I have to praise Mr. Silverberg's assessment of Joe's third album, "A Look Inside Joe South". It remains as one of my favorite albums and desperately needs to be made into CD format. One only has to look at the album cover before he ever gets to listen to the stylistic way he imparts his special brand of "blues" to know that this is a very special album indeed. Everytime I would take it out and look at it, I knew the man was suffering a personal inner anguish. Although the entire album is a deep, "introspection", of Joe's inner turmoil after the death of his brother, Tommy, the first side of this album in particular, illustrates Joe South's uncanny ability to translate his tortured spirit into realms where everyone can relate to a deep sense of loss. Joe South remains a remarkable talent who put his intense "down-to-earth"- spin on everything he wrote. I grew up with Joe South and continue to play his songs that, although take me back to a time of questioning and self-revelation, are still mind-boggling for today. If you are just discovering Joe South, only know a few songs, or if you happen to be a die-hard fan, I suggest that you, "Drop what you're doin'!", buy or play this CD often and "Walk A Mile In His (My)Shoes." You will proclaim like he did so well, "Lord, have mercy!"

5 out of 5 stars The very definition of "country soul".......2006-03-04

South found solo fame with two performances from this pair of late-60s albums, the breakout singles "Games People Play" and "Walk a Mile in My Shoes." But like many artists' popular breakthroughs, his hits were preceded by a great deal of wood-shedding, as a songwriter, producer and instrumentalist, resulting in breakthrough albums that were mature and sophisticated, rather than raw and brash. South's guitar added the memorable electric sting to Simon & Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence" and slunk behind Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools" (the unedited guitar intro to this latter tune, as heard on the 2002 CD reissue of "Lady Soul," is worth seeking out), before providing the foundation for these two solo albums.

The bittersweet opener "All My Hard Times" is a microcosm of all that is great about South's writing and singing -- a hopeful lyric with a husky, soulful vocal that edges perfectly into gospel. It's truly a wonder that this didn't burn up the chart. South's rendition of his own "Rose Garden" utilizes a Spectorian "Be My Baby" beat and castanets on the title that would later become a hit for Lynn Anderson. The familiar electric sitar of "Games People Play" also powers the funky "Mirror of Your Mind," and South's gutiar is heard on the bluesy "Redneck" and swampy "Don't Be Ashamed." The latter borrows so liberally from "River Deep, Mountain High" is surprising no lawsuit ensued.

The Beach Boys' styled backing vocal intro of "Clock Up on the Wall" gives way to a melancholy tune that brings to mind turn-of-the-decade hits like "Smile a Little Smile for Me" and "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)," and the gospel chorus returns for the faith-in-love "Shelter." The swamp-blues "A Million Miles Away" is a wonderfully trippy instrumental, and "Don't It Make You Want to Go Home" closes its original album with a moving song of discouraged nostalgia. Raven's CD reissue adds the psych-soul bonus track "Hole in Your Soul," plucked from the "Games People Play" reissue of "Introspect."

Both albums perfectly captured the crossfire of mid-60s pop craft, late-60s psychedelia, and rootsy Southern country and gospel. The result is a perfect blend of tuneful melodies, reflective lyrics, funky guitars and soulful vocal performances. Elvis and Tony Joe White would mine similar ground a year or two later, but never so effectively as South did here. An astounding freshman and sophomore one-two punch. 5 out of 5 stars 2 of the most influential albums in popular music ever.......2004-02-20

Atlanta native Joe Souter (a.k.a. Joe South) is one of the unsung heroes in popular music as although a few of his hits peaked in the top 40 in pop and/or country, as noted, mostly other artists had hits with his material. This CD is an Australian twofer of his first 2 albums originally released on Capitol. Introspect, from 1968, and Don't It Make You Want To Go Home, from 1969. These 2 albums contain many of the most influential songs in all of popular music including the #12 pop hit "Games People Play," (covered successfully by Freddy Weller, who had a #2 country hit with it), Birds of a Feather (a #96 hit for Joe that became a #23 hit for Paul Revere & The Raiders in 1971), Rose Garden (covered by Lynn Anderson who would take it to #1 on both country and pop charts), Don't It Make You Want To Go Home (which would peak at #27 on the country chart and #41 on the pop chart, which Bobby Bare and a few other artists have covered), Children (a #51 hit which Billy Joe Royal covered on his "Cherry Hill Park" album in 1970, available on a twofer with 1965's "Down In The Boondocks" which is available here at Amazon), Walk a Mile In My Shoes (a #12 pop hit, #56 country hit, which Elvis would later feature in his concerts regularly throughout the 1970s) and These Are Not My People (Freddy Weller also charted with this and it peaked at #5 on the country charts), plus "Hole In Your Soul," a single that got included on the "Games People Play" compilation in the LP days and not on any other album is included as a bonus track, but the entire CD is classic singer-songwriter music and is essential to any collection of music from the 1960s-1970s.

5 out of 5 stars Forgotten Hero of the Late-60s.......2004-01-01

Without a doubt, Joe South is the most important lost artist of the late-1960s. Not sure how that happened - I guess his manager/promoter really sucked, but this singer/songwriter was full of talent both vocally and lyrically.

I first time I ever heard Joe South was in a record store in London, England in 1993. The owner had one of Joe's vinyls playing and it was awesome. I returned to Canada and found the only CD available (Rhino) - I played it so much, I ended up buying a double because the first one soon scratched.

Joe had a tremendous ability to blend harmonies, instruments with powerful lyrics - both serious and playful - without sounding preachy or out-of-date. His voice may not be everyone's thing, but it is, without a doubt, honest, raw and strong. He ended up writing some top sellers for others, but I remain a purist, prefering his versions of "Rose Garden", "Games People Play", "Down in the Boondocks" and "Hush" to the artists who made them more famous.

Joe South is still very much undiscovered country for most people and maybe that's not a bad thing. A lost gem who single-handedly embodies much of what this era of rock, folk and soul is all about.

5 out of 5 stars The style is the man--and the song.......2001-05-02

Many composers have chosen to perform their own material and commit it to discs, with mixed results. Only with Noel Coward do we feel that a good deal of the charm of his numbers lies in the very way he performs them. For proof, we now have the Naxos Nostalgia (8.120529), which dishes up 16 tracks of the ultra-refined son of W. S.Gilbert, giving us six selections from "This Year of Grace," one from "Bittersweet," a medley of treasures from his "Cavalcade," another from his other works, and a few other trifles that are better than most of what is written today.

Add to all this two classical scenes with Coward and co-star Gertrude Lawrence from his "Private Lives," incredibly valuable for those local drama groups who butcher this work in that this CD can teach them the tone and rhythms that are essential in making this classic succeed.

The subtitle of this set is "The Complete Recordings, Volume 1: 1928-1932." So we can look forward to future offerings featuring this fascinating composer-lyricist-performer. Thank you, Naxos, yet again.

5 out of 5 stars Make it Home.......2002-12-20

Dan Seals has done it again. Make it Home is a hauntingly beautiful album that showcases one of the richest voices in country music. Dan's work seems to improve with each new album, and Make it Home is no exception. Dan's voice and the instruments combine to create a sound that is out of this world -and the songs themselves are excellent - truly a rare combination - well worth listening to over and over - if you are a Dan Seals fan, this album is a must for your collection. If you enjoy rich mellow Country Music - this is the album for you. From Angel Eyes, to the wonderful lyrics and sound of Blessed, this album is top-notch from start to finish. There are no "b" tracks here - almost every song could become a hit single!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hooked from the start!!.......2002-12-11

How can you top two mega successful acoustic albums? Dan found a way with his new "Make It Home" cd. With the hand of a master craftsman, he's taken an excellent selection of songs and woven them into a CD worth it's weight in gold. The CD begins it's magic with "Angel Eyes" and continues with gems like "Certain Circles" and "Blessed". Dan's back to his magical writing form nicely illustrated by the heart wrenching "Make It Home". Yes, I am a major fan; but this CD deserves nothing but rave reviews.

As a Dan Seals fan for a number of years I eagerly awaited this new release. I was not not disappointed, Dan has produced another tremendous CD, melodic, and a pleasure to listen to. My favourite track is "Saw you in my dreams". He has composed some of the most beautiful music in his career, long may he continue.

5 out of 5 stars Dan makes it home.......2002-08-30

After giving us two awesome acoustic cds, dan comes back with a DANdy. This studio album is complete and by far the best country music I have heard in the last few years. It is strong from top to bottom. Angels Eyes leads the way with many other great surprises along the way. How about LRB's Reminiscing? Very Nice! Every song is a great listen but Blessed is the best. What range Dan has on this one. You have got to hear it for yourself. He still has that powerful voice from his England Dan days. This is true country music with feeling and heart. Some country is cool.
