The genesis of this stellar tradition-minded bluegrass sextet goes back to a 1994 festival in North Carolina, when Dudley Connell, James King, and Don Rigsby sang together for the first time and gave each other goose bumps on the Stanley Brothers' "The Angels Are Singing in Heaven Tonight." A few weeks later in Ohio, Connell had a similar epiphany with Glen Duncan and Joe Mullins, and so for a week in December 1995, those five established and experienced veterans grabbed bassist Marshall Wilborn and hunkered down at Long View Farm in Massachusetts. This wonderful record is the result of their mission to dip into the soul of bluegrass tradition, and it is a remarkable vocal showcase. Whether on hard-charging burners or heartfelt ballads, sacred or secular, there is a purity of intent that immediately shines through. Being "on vacation" from their regular gigs allowed these six musicians to relax, open their hearts, and let the music come to them. They may not be well known enough to be accurately billed a "supergroup," but they are without doubt a super group--with the emphasis on group. --Marc Greilsamer

Having enjoyed one career as half of the folk duo Ian & Sylvia in the 1960s, Tyson, a real-life Canadian rancher, branched out into cowboy music in the 1980s, making an authentic contribution to a genre that sees too many silver-screen cowpokes and comedic galoots. While his songs have long been covered by Judy Collins, Jerry Jeff Walker, Suzy Bogguss, and others, his albums, especially the platinum-selling Cowboyography, are prized almost as much as original Bohlin saddles in some circles, both for their artistry and their ability to capture the romance and realism of the ranch and rodeo culture. This album, recorded live over four nights in an Alberta, Canada, community hall, reprises the best of Tyson's repertoire ("Navajo Rug," "Someday Soon," "I Outgrew the Wagon") and introduces four new tunes that stand tall with their elders. At 68, Tyson's vocals may be a bit frayed around the edges, but they're still as warm and cozy as an Indian blanket, and his acoustic-trio framework fits the material as snugly as a favorite pair of pointy-toed boots. Makes for fine listening around the campfire or simply in a saddle of your own imagination. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Another Ian Tyson Hit.......2007-01-19

Being one of my favorite artists makes me bias, but I sure enjoyed this CD. A good one to add to your Ian Tyson collection. And I have enjoyed his music live and in person, too.

5 out of 5 stars Back in Longview.......2006-07-09

Ian Tyson as much a part of Canadian music as anyone could be and it was neat to be transported back to the energy of his live performances. Having lived in Alberta for twenty years we made every attempt we could to hear this man live. His songs are varied and unique and tell a story that opens up the imagination to a way of life which is fast disappearing. I liked the fact that this CD was recorded in Longview and enjoyed the contributions of the musicians as well. Myron Szott continues to show his fiddling artistry on this CD. Great fun.

5 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This.......2004-12-18

Okay, okay... as with any "Live" recording, there isn't the purity of the studio. In my estimation, this is what really makes this a fantastic CD. It's Ian Tyson at his best, heard the way he should be heard, live onstage.

If you're a fan of "Nashville Trash", give this a listen. Even friends who aren't C&W fans love this CD. Why, because it's a work of quality and of sincere passion. The best thing he's released since "All the Good'uns"

5 out of 5 stars To my ear - perfect!.......2003-03-03

My first really cowboy recording and I was blown away. This guy is nearly 70, sings on key, the lyrics feel real to me, and I enjoy live recordings and this is one of the best I've heard. Despite the the theme of some of the songs there is an optimisim that shows through thus is a very upbeat album. Will now have to start backfilling with other Tyson albums.
If I could give a gift to all my friends, it would be a copy of this CD. And great photography in the liner notes, a nice add.

5 out of 5 stars Tyson's Still Got It.......2003-01-29

I have been listening to Ian Tyson since the 60s. His voice is still as strong as ever. Age has not diminished it at all. This is a wonderful CD for any cowboy folk fan. I especially enjoyed the live recording. I hope he is still writing and recording for a good long time.

5 out of 5 stars Better and Better.......2007-07-04

The Rankins have given us beautiful music from their very first CD, but Rankin Family Reunion outshines all the rest. I was afraid we'd never hear from them again as a family after John Morris' death, but not only do we get a new CD with no repeats, but one that shows that their voices and music age and blend like fine Scotch. I hope they never deprive us for so long again. It's a sin to let such talent go unheard.

5 out of 5 stars Reunion Rankin Family.......2007-03-20

The Rankin family reunites eight years later and the CD delivers lovely traditional celtic tunes with the harmony that only this family brings to the stage. There are fiddle and piano tracks that John Morris taped before his death. Sunset, written and sung by his daughter Molly, as she plays the guitar while backed up by family members brought tears to my eyes. Molly delivers like her dad and family. The old tunes mixed in with the new find me playing this CD over and over and waiting for the next!!!

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2007-03-20

I am so glad that the Rankin Family is finally back. After the tragedy of losing John Morris, the family stopped recording for several years. This is their first release since then, and there is a haunting maturity to their voices and harmonies. I love this CD, and look forward to more releases from them.

5 out of 5 stars Crystal sound and burning licks.......2004-05-27

I purchased this album after really enjoying James Kings' "30 Years of Farming." Longview is spectacular. Their burners burn and their gospel yearns. The sound quality on the disc is great, and the tunes here are a little off the beaten path- not the bluegrass standards you'd expect on a collaboration album. I am going to go buy their first two albums. I play banjo, by the way, and the banjo breaks make me yearn.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!.......1999-01-31

Impeccable harmonies and fine instrumentation dominate this collection of old standards and some old "not so standards.' Dudley says Longview II is in the can and on the way!!! This one will be hard to beat.

4 out of 5 stars Lonesome bluegrass, still the best........1998-07-31

Some people might have the idea that traditional bluegrass may be fading. Ha! Then along comes a band called Longview. They prove that not only does traditional bluegrass still shine, but its still where bluegrass makes its mark on musical society. Longview has captured the true spirit of what happens to the blues when its mixed with traditional instruments and that high lonesome sound. Dudley Connell (guitar, vocals), Glen Duncan (fiddle), James King (guitar, vocals), Joe Mullins (banjo, vocals), Don Rigsby (mandolin, vocals), and Marshall Wilborn (bass) give us one of the best traditional bluegrass albums of the past few years. They cover it all from Ted Lundy to the Louvin Brothers, Ralph Stanley to Randall Hylton and a few originals thrown in between show that people haven't forgotten where the music came from. Truly a gem to any collection, but you may need two, 'cause you might wear the first one out.

The acclaimed 1997 Longview debut was probably intended to be a one-time-only, lightning-in-a-bottle bluegrass vocal summit. Two and a half years later, the sextet tries to recapture the magic and succeeds beyond all expectations. What's most amazing about these 14 performances is the way the voices seamlessly mesh despite the sporadic nature of the band. This set focuses on second-generation masters such as Larry Sparks and Jimmy Martin as well as more-obscure but highly talented regional figures, but there are notable exceptions: the title track comes from the 1991 Randy Travis album of the same name and features exquisitely aching vocals from James King (lead), Dudley Connell, and Don Rigsby. Joe Mullins's high tenor hair-raisingly soars over Connell's lead on A.P. Carter's "Little Annie." And on the Stanley Brothers' "Angels Are Singing"--the actual spark that ignited the Longview fire at an impromptu 1994 jam--King, Connell, and Rigsby turn in the kind of passionate performance that must have touched them so that very first time. With Glen Duncan's fiddles and Mullins's banjo leading the way, the sublime harmonies offer just the right balance of exuberance, emotion, and taste. --Marc Greilsamer

This is a wonderful traditional Blussgrass band. I love every song on the ablum. I highly recommend it!! FIVE STARS.
Any fan of traditonal bluegrass will love this whole album.

5 out of 5 stars Not just banjos..........2002-11-07

Following up on Bluegrass Daddy's comments, in addition to the great instrumental work, this CD features two of the best voices in bluegrass, James King and Dudley Connell. I have and love every Longview CD, as well as four James King. And you will find Dudley singing with Johnson Mountain Boys, who have a number of titles available. In my opinion, this group has the best vocal sounds of any group now active.

4 out of 5 stars Move over and let the best lead!.......1999-08-07

This band is hot hot hot!!!!!!! Where the Foggy Mountian Boys meet the Bluegrass Boys.. The amazing blend of every vocal tradition in bluegrass music. The fabulous material and the glue that Joe Mullins banjo pours over the whole group keeps this CD in permanent rotation on my play list. Joe Mullins is the BOMB! When he comes in with that banjo it is as if time stops to make room. Joe is the most entertaining and interesting banjo player I have heard in a long time.

The perfect soundtrack for making a fast getaway with your best gun moll or cruising down Pacific Coast Highway on a top secret mission. This is surf as it would be if Coltrane were supplying the sex wax and the spy cameras were running 24/7 - crazy saxophones and other jazzy nods infuse these vivid tunes with edge. If you're looking for "Wipeout!", you're heading in the wrong direction - this is non-traditional surf and the waves can get a little wild, but it's a satisfying journey for those who don't mind getting wet.
