The genesis of this stellar tradition-minded bluegrass sextet goes back to a 1994 festival in North Carolina, when Dudley Connell, James King, and Don Rigsby sang together for the first time and gave each other goose bumps on the Stanley Brothers' "The Angels Are Singing in Heaven Tonight." A few weeks later in Ohio, Connell had a similar epiphany with Glen Duncan and Joe Mullins, and so for a week in December 1995, those five established and experienced veterans grabbed bassist Marshall Wilborn and hunkered down at Long View Farm in Massachusetts. This wonderful record is the result of their mission to dip into the soul of bluegrass tradition, and it is a remarkable vocal showcase. Whether on hard-charging burners or heartfelt ballads, sacred or secular, there is a purity of intent that immediately shines through. Being "on vacation" from their regular gigs allowed these six musicians to relax, open their hearts, and let the music come to them. They may not be well known enough to be accurately billed a "supergroup," but they are without doubt a super group--with the emphasis on group. --Marc Greilsamer

Having enjoyed one career as half of the folk duo Ian & Sylvia in the 1960s, Tyson, a real-life Canadian rancher, branched out into cowboy music in the 1980s, making an authentic contribution to a genre that sees too many silver-screen cowpokes and comedic galoots. While his songs have long been covered by Judy Collins, Jerry Jeff Walker, Suzy Bogguss, and others, his albums, especially the platinum-selling Cowboyography, are prized almost as much as original Bohlin saddles in some circles, both for their artistry and their ability to capture the romance and realism of the ranch and rodeo culture. This album, recorded live over four nights in an Alberta, Canada, community hall, reprises the best of Tyson's repertoire ("Navajo Rug," "Someday Soon," "I Outgrew the Wagon") and introduces four new tunes that stand tall with their elders. At 68, Tyson's vocals may be a bit frayed around the edges, but they're still as warm and cozy as an Indian blanket, and his acoustic-trio framework fits the material as snugly as a favorite pair of pointy-toed boots. Makes for fine listening around the campfire or simply in a saddle of your own imagination. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:

If you're a fan of "Nashville Trash", give this a listen. Even friends who aren't C&W fans love this CD. Why, because it's a work of quality and of sincere passion. The best thing he's released since "All the Good'uns"
To my ear - perfect!.......2003-03-03
If I could give a gift to all my friends, it would be a copy of this CD. And great photography in the liner notes, a nice add.

The acclaimed 1997 Longview debut was probably intended to be a one-time-only, lightning-in-a-bottle bluegrass vocal summit. Two and a half years later, the sextet tries to recapture the magic and succeeds beyond all expectations. What's most amazing about these 14 performances is the way the voices seamlessly mesh despite the sporadic nature of the band. This set focuses on second-generation masters such as Larry Sparks and Jimmy Martin as well as more-obscure but highly talented regional figures, but there are notable exceptions: the title track comes from the 1991 Randy Travis album of the same name and features exquisitely aching vocals from James King (lead), Dudley Connell, and Don Rigsby. Joe Mullins's high tenor hair-raisingly soars over Connell's lead on A.P. Carter's "Little Annie." And on the Stanley Brothers' "Angels Are Singing"--the actual spark that ignited the Longview fire at an impromptu 1994 jam--King, Connell, and Rigsby turn in the kind of passionate performance that must have touched them so that very first time. With Glen Duncan's fiddles and Mullins's banjo leading the way, the sublime harmonies offer just the right balance of exuberance, emotion, and taste. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:
