Editorial Reviews
Stella grew up singing in her granddad's church in the East Tennessee mountain area of the Appalachian chain. From a very early age, she wanted to become a missionary in some foreign land, teaching little children to sing "Jesus Loves Me." Indeed, she travels all over the globe singing in front of audiences of many varied cultures. It's truly been a dream come true from her earliest memories. Yet, the road has been rough and rocky at times, but the love of Jesus has been with her through it all. Stella's career includes 25 hit singles, 17 albums, 5 Broadway Touring Musicals, 6 Starring Roles in Film, and most recently, she was named CCMA's Mainstream Country Artist 2002.
Product Description:
I feel blessed to have come full circle with this particular collection of songs. I sang these as a child and while recording them choosing to sing directly from a collection of church hymnals that I have managed to carry with me over the years. I felt as though some of my aunts, uncles and grandparents and other loved ones who have gone on to be with the Lord were in the studio singing along. - Stella.

Appalachian Stomp is an ideal starter disc for those just beginning to explore bluegrass. Mostly this is because its 18 selections are so immediately accessible. The "classics" here, in other words, are usually those infrequent bluegrass cuts to have gained radio recognition beyond a core bluegrass audience. That explains why along with timeless standards such as Flatt & Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and the Osborne Brothers' "Rocky Top" we also get "Dueling Banjos" from the film Deliverance, a cut that is to classic bluegrass what Walter Murphy is to Beethoven. There are less immediately obvious choices too, though. If your previous exposure to bluegrass doesn't go beyond the Holy Trinity of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers--for example, if you've never heard J.D. Crowe & the New South's stellar example of progressive bluegrass, "Old Home Place," or experienced Jimmy Martin lay down the law on his rousing "You Don't Know My Mind"--then you're in for a high-lonesome surprise. --David CantwellCustomer Reviews:

This impressive--and frankly, fun--musical document is still sending out shock waves almost 50 years after its original 1952 vinyl release. The Smithsonian's six-CD reissue is painstakingly researched, annotated, and packaged (even boasting an enhanced disc for the techno-capable). Unlike field recorders, eccentric filmmaker/collector/musicologist Harry Smith assembled the Anthology from commercially released (though obscure) 78 rpm discs issued between 1927 and 1935. Its broad scope--from country blues to Cajun social music to Appalachian murder ballads--was monumentally influential, setting musicians like Bob Dylan down the path to folk fandom. The White House started its own national music library with the Anthology; anyone with more than a passing interest in American roots music should do the same. --Michael Ruby

THE Chronicles.......2007-07-12
totally essential listening.......2007-02-15
Aside from some essential listening ("Coo Coo Bird," "Stackalee," "Mississippi Boweavil Blues," "I wish I Was a Mole in the Ground," etc. etc.), the package has some great supplementary material. It's very interesting to learn about the song information and performer information that Smith collected with his anthology, but it's also interesting to get a glimpse into his project, seeing how he relentlessly collected and chose which songs to represent. He was a true lover of music, and that love is reflected in his project.
Please don't come to this compilation expecting pristine sound quality--it was assembled in the 50's, which means that the recordings come from then as well as much earlier--it's about the music and performers anyway, and a little bit of scratch really doesn't detract that much from the organic, down home experience. It IS a bit of a shame that there are 6 CDs, but really only about 4 full CDs worth of music--it would have been OK with me if the Ballad/Social Music/Songs organization was not cleanly divided between discs to save space, since the division isn't very efficient, but I suppose the reissuers wanted to emulate the original vinyl collection. I don't really find the material to be homogeneous like the second spotlight reviewer does, although I do agree that Roots and Blues: A Retrospective is also a great compilation--I'd recommend getting both for a great complementary experience.
Hopefully this set never goes out of print, as it's a great piece of art that any music fan or musician can learn a lot from--and enjoy, too! It's a shame that Smith had to preserve this music as it was beginning to die out even as he was collecting it, but it's also heartwarming that such classic sounds can be preserved for us to hear so many years later and keep the tradition alive. Enjoy the living history!
The grandfather of the reissue records.......2005-02-21
Listening to many cuts on this album you can hear the source of much material for folk groups as diverse as the New Lost City Ramblers and The Holy Modal Rounders, rock groups like Canned Heat, and The Grateful Dead. Some of the melodies will be familiar to fans of Dylan, others to Jorma Kaukonan listeners. There are otehrs -- many many others.
This set is the source, the headwaters of reissues, and revivals. An essential part of any folk music collection.
Necessary........2003-05-28
Essential.......2002-11-30
This is the greatest mix tape ever made, and an essential cultural artifact, not only of the vernacular music of the hills & highways of pre-electrification America, but also of the folk movement ofthe fifties and sixties (the primer fromwhic all else was derived) and by extension of the hippy movement following closely thereafter.
SOme of this music is really wild...

The original Will the Circle Be Unbroken is undoubtedly a landmark country-music recording. A peace offering between rock-reared longhairs and rock-ribbed Nashville patriarchs (and one matriarch, Mother Maybelle Carter), it exposed generations of upstart pickers and singers to old-time country music and its impact is felt to this day. The organizers of the 1971 sessions that led to the initial three-LP set, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, have produced two sequels, the first in 1989 and the most recent in 2002. This six-disc collection (including an all-star concert DVD) pulls together all three Circle sessions and, naturally, captures dozens of essential performances, plus a fair number of inessentials. Anyone with an interest in country music will want the original. Its mission is clear, the performances are inspired, and its significance is undeniable. The second Circle strays far afield from the original concept, bringing in the rather lightweight likes of John Denver and Michael Martin Murphy to mix with volume one holdovers Jimmy Martin and Earl Scruggs. The final volume is also more diffuse than one would like, though eminent guest stars such as Del McCoury, June Carter Cash, and Johnny Cash help it capture the spirit of the original more frequently than does its immediate predecessor. Completists will relish having all three collections in one box, while those who think three times around the circle is two too many are advised to stick with the 30th anniversary reissue of the initial album. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

American Bluegrass Music - Yesterday and Today.......2005-01-27
No other collection of country music brings together "founders and originators" such as Mother Maybelle Carter, and the Carter Family, with their musical "children", Roy Acuff, Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Earl Scruggs, Merle Travis, and Doc Watson, and the third generation...Rosanne Cash, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Allison Krauss, Tony Rice, Dwight Yoakum...some of the greatest talents of three generations and six decades of American music.
Each generation of singers and musicians remain faithful to the "roots" of this music, playing with acoustic guitars, banjos and fiddles. The mood is that of a group of talented friends, sitting in the living room, and singing and playing the songs they love the best. The feeling and heart in these performances can be felt, as well as heard.
The sound quality is exceptional. It is easy to forget these are recordings...it feels as if the musicians are sitting right next to you while they joke, chat, sing and play these songs.
This is too much music to digest in a single sitting. Instead, it is more enjoyable to select just one CD, savor it for a day or two, and then move on to another. I have no doubt that people will be listening to, and loving, this music a century from now. This will be one of the living treasures of American culture for generations to come.
It is amazing that a seven hour collection of some of the greatest music of our time is available for less than $50...less than $7 for each incredible hour of music. At this bargain price, even folks who own one or two of the previous sets included in "Trilogy" ought to buy this collection...and perhaps buy another for their children or a good friend.

Album Description
For three decades now, the beloved Dry Branch Fire Squad has been a bastion of mountain soul, bluegrass, and old-time music - carrying timeless traditions into the modern era with a blend of reverence, soul, and wit all their own. This special edition thirtieth anniversary collection is designed to complement Rounder's previous Dry Branch anthology, Tried and True (Rounder 11519), and contains material (some previously unreleased) recorded in the twenty years since that collection's release. Under the stewardship of Ron Thomason, Dry Branch Fire Squad has weathered the storms on the sea of time, all to forge an iron-clad brand of defiantly rugged old-time and traditional bluegrass music that imparts essential reminders of the past while unafraid to meet the future head-on.Customer Reviews:
this group is GREAT.......2007-06-28
A charming hour that treats us to DBFS's sound since 1989.......2007-05-19
Their ninth album on Rounder Records, this heartfelt 30th anniversary collection only draws material from the label's releases since 1989. The reason is that there was a previous band anthology, "Tried and True," (Rounder 11519) released in 1987. Would it have been better for a 30-year album to also draw material from all three decades, and from as far back as their three pre-Rounder LPs from the 1977-78 timeframe? While their Rounder material has been superior to their earliest recordings, it would've been exciting to document all 30 years with a couple songs like Out on the Blue Ridge Mountain from their earliest 1977 "Live at the Crying Cowboy Concert Saloon" LP (RT-513). Also, the early days of the band emphasized basic, mournful, sensitive vocal duet arrangements with Ron Thomason and tenor John Baker (fiddler Kenny Baker's son). You'll need to get DBFS's 1979, 1981 or 1982 Rounder albums ("Born to be Lonesome," "Antiques and Inventions," or "Fannin' the Flames") to experience them together. Or to hear some of Thomason's originals like "Dak's Song" or "Oh! What a Storm." So, to truly celebrate all 30 years with this band, I recommend also picking up a copy of the 1987 "Tried and True" anthology mentioned earlier.
Among the 21 tracks on "30th Anniversary," there are four previously unreleased songs (He's Coming To Us Dead, Over in the Glory Land, Golden Ring, How Great Thou Art). Although liner notes don't indicate when they were recorded, they're quite recent, and three feature the band's newest lineup of Ron Thomason, Brian Aldridge, Dan Russell and Tommy Boyd. A hit for George Jones and Tammy Wynette, "Golden Ring" is still arranged with Ron's crosspicked guitar, and the song does appear on the band's 1981 album "Antiques and Inventions" with a different group except for common denominator Thomason. The binding thread or glue in all of the band configurations, Ron primarily plays guitar or mandolin. His clawhammer banjo picking appears in two songs - his solo rendition of Grayson & Whitter's "He's Coming To Us Dead" and the band's quartet offering of "The Honest Farmer," accompanied only by fiddle and banjo.
Vocal arrangements capture the emotional essence of their largely traditional bluegrass and gospel canon. On all vocal cuts, Thomason sings lead. In the last two decades, the band's mournful signature sound has also regularly been built around Ron's lead with female tenor or high baritone parts (courtesy of Suzanne Thomas and Mary Jo Leet). All three of them are showcased together in "Dip Your Fingers in Some Water," and the quartet (with Charles Leet singing bass) entitled "When I Went Down in the Valley to Pray." Hazel Dickens, who recalls a time when it was "downright subversive practically to be a woman in bluegrass," sings tenor on "Hide You in the Blood." These songcarriers have kept nuggets like Carter Stanley's "Rollin' on Rubber Wheels" in their repertoire for years. Ron once said that he viewed the band as "spokesmen for a way of life" among the people who originally propagated the music. It's their revitalization of dusty old classic treasures (like A. P. Carter's "A Distant Land To Roam") that has also built their fanbase. Doc Watson simply called it "the old music," folk ballads and the kinds of songs sung by the Carter Family and Grayson & Whitter. Interestingly, their vocal stacking for that A.P. Carter cover includes four vocal parts, but no tenor according to the liner notes.
Instrumentally, the band's unpretentious picking is sufficient for their authentic kind of repertoire. With some electric bass and steel guitar, "Carolyn at the Broken Wheel Inn" is a unique selection. Besides those mentioned above, others in the band have included Dave Edmundson (fiddle, vocals), John Hisey (banjo, vocals), [...] Irwin (bass), Bobby Maynard (fiddle) and Adam McIntosh (banjo, mandolin, vocals). The band's widespread appeal in live performance is also due to their showmanship and stage presence that enhance their purest form bluegrass. The charismatic band opens up, sings and plays with sincerity, and builds rapport. All in all, this is a charming hour that treats us to DBFS's sound since 1989. Given their impact on generations of country, country-rock, and bluegrass acts, it's amazing the Louvins haven't had a modern tribute before. Unlike tribute albums that stumble through inconsistent performances and ill-matched material, this one soars, the selections well matched to the paired artists. Joe Nichols and Rhonda Vincent capture "Cash on the Barrelhead's" sassy humor. Emmylou Harris--who spearheaded the Louvin revival--and Rodney Crowell are relaxed on the Louvin hit "My Baby's Gone." Merle Haggard and the album's producer Carl Jackson capture the anguish of "Must You Throw Dirt in My Face." Glen Campbell and Leslie Satcher wring maximum passion from "When I Stop Dreaming." Obscure gospel tunes receive equally stellar treatment. "Keep Your Eyes on Jesus" teams Pam Tillis with Johnny Cash (handling the recitation) and the Jordanaires. Marty Stuart and Del McCoury establish the Louvins' bluegrass ties on "Let Us Travel, Travel On." By seamlessly blending traditional and modern Jackson's created a magnificent tribute that doubles as a fine introduction to the Louvins' earthy, breathtaking majesty. --Rich KienzleCustomer Reviews:

Given the direct line of progression between the songs of the Carter Family and the mountain music of the Stanley Brothers, it's surprising that it's taken the venerable Ralph Stanley more than a hundred albums before releasing one devoted solely to the Carters. The wait was worth it, for the rough-hewn soulfulness of Stanley's vocals and the unvarnished production truly conjure a distant land--a musical expanse far removed from the present--of seminal songs suffused with faith and a strong sense of mortality. From train songs ("Engine 143") to seafaring songs ("Waves on the Sea") to prisoner songs (the oft-recorded "Worried Man Blues"), Stanley takes material written by A.P. Carter or popularized by the Carter Family and plumbs the emotional depths. Many of these songs are spirituals, with guest autoharp by Mike Seeger and call-and-response harmonies on the opening "God Gave Noah the Rainbow Sign," while the uptempo "Keep on the Firing Line" suggests a soldier-like commitment to Christ and the harmony-laden hymn "On a Hill Lone and Grey" describes the Crucifixion. The most familiar song here, "Motherless Children," is also the most powerful, with Stanley's a cappella first verse joined by the mournful strains of a funereal fiddle for the rest of the song. With "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes," the album shows how the Carter Family inspired what we've since called country music. --Don McLeese

Stirring, Memorable but Acoustically Lacking.......2006-09-16
What left me perplexed was the sound quality. I'm wondering if T. Bone Burnett wanted a mono-like sound reminiscent of the thirties and forties a la the era of the Carter Family. The soundstage is compressed and sounds like all the instruments are massed in the center. There's little imaging, air or separation between guitars, autoharp, banjo, etc. and Ralph, of course, is dead center. In addition, there's a haze or veil over the recording. Again, I'm wondering if this was intended to mimic those bygone days.
It doesn't get better than this.......2006-08-15

Alabama's Alton and Rabon Delmore made their first splash on the Grand Ole Opry in the 1930s. They became the Louvin Brothers' primary inspiration, and their enduring original numbers live on among Americana and bluegrass acts. This four-disc, 87-track set assembles their complete 1933-40 Bluebird recordings and 1940-41 Decca recordings, the bulk of them timeless, unadorned country with blues overtones galore. Their style, too, was free of artifice, centered around their relaxed, flexible harmonies. The interplay between Alton's guitar and Rabon's four-string tenor guitar created a solid, fluid base for every tune. Included are Delmore masterpieces "Brown's Ferry Blues," "Southern Moon," "Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar," "Blue Railroad Train," "False Hearted Girl," and "Rainin' on the Mountain." Some obscure numbers are equally fascinating. "The Dying Truckdriver," among the earliest country trucker tunes, was more sentimental than most. "Scatterbrain Mama" anticipates the Delmores' postwar country boogie records for King, which clearly anticipated rockabilly. While the notes don't reflect the comprehensive expertise such a package merits, the music, superbly and skillfully remastered, speaks for itself. --Rich KienzleAlbum Details

Sorry, this AIN'T the complete works..........2004-07-11
This is rather shocking for JSP. They are usually so thorough in their reissue boxes. I'll grudgingly buy this, because I know the remastering will be good, but don't believe for one moment that you're getting the whole enchilada. If you're curious as to what these guys sound like, or like 'em and want 4 hrs of their music, go for it. But there's many sides left out. :( Maybe Bear Family will get off their arses and finally do the Delmores right.
