Forty years after their first recordings, Bill and Earl Bolick were persuaded out of retirement for the second time, this time by Ken Irwin and Rounder Records. Recorded in 1976, these 14 magical tracks (often played but never before recorded by the brothers) form a worthy coda to their all-too-limited body of recorded work and are in fact as valuable as the duo's original sides. With two (mildly) upbeat exceptions, the songs included here are gloomy and tragic; they speak of suffering, desperation, disappointment, death, and redemption. Bill (unearthly high tenor) and Earl (bedrock baritone) were interlacing harmonies as children in church, so imagine how effortless it sounds 50 years later. Supported by only Bill's supremely gentle mandolin runs and Earl's acoustic guitar foundation, the Bolicks sing not with overwrought emotion and intense passion, but with a sense of resignation and understanding that is all the more painful. --Marc Greilsamer

The best Blue Sky Boys CD ?.......2002-01-31
A great mixture of light and dark, religious and secular giving an excellent cross-section of the Blue Sky Boys recorded output including tracks not currently available elsewhere.
A classic collection worth the purchase price for "Mary of the Wild Moor".
Very traditional and exceptionally well done by two great exponents of the genre.

A Gentle Late Career Portrait of the Boys.......2002-01-25
And, as such, the body of work from the 1930s that made the BSBs the hidden legends of old time music has yet to be released in CD format (with the exception of the 1936 recording "Down on the Banks of the Ohio" in Harry Smith's posthumously anthologized, "Anthology of Am. Folk Music, Volume 4" on Revenant Records). There we find the haunting, gentle beauty of the BSBs: notably the whispy harmonies by the brothers and Bill Bolick's incredible mandolin playing, which mimics the sweeping currents of the Ohio River. It's a stunning performance.
But to return to this collection, the BSBs late in their career was still a formidable act. The choice of songs on this album display the range of emotions and genres that the Boys incorporated into their distinctive art: from gospel tunes (You Could Be a Millionaire), to lyrical love songs (Green Grow the Lilacs), to old time ballads (The Lawson Family Tragedy).
The music of the Blue Sky Boys remains timeless. It is beauty that is seeped in tragic tales, the haunting of salvation, and, sometimes, just sheer irreverence.

It took a bit of coaxing by folklorist Archie Green, but the Bolick brothers agreed, however reluctantly, to perform this reunion concert at the University of Illinois's Lincoln Hall on October 17, 1964. Although the pair had recently resumed recording after a 13-year layoff, this live appearance--their first public performance since 1951--was a historic moment for both the Blue Sky Boys and the folk revival, and this collection remains the only concert recording of the legendary duo. Bill and Earl run through 22 wonderful and varied highlights of their 15-year RCA association (most songs are unavailable), ranging from their 1936 recording debut "I'm Just Here to Get My Baby Out of Jail" to the fan favorite "The Sweetest Gift," which they waxed in 1949. Clearly, the boys shake off any reservations they might have had, offering grim ballads and "peppy" numbers, both sacred and secular, to a rapt college audience. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

Between 1936 and 1950, North Carolina brothers Bill and Earl Bolick recorded more than 100 sides for RCA Victor, and they rank among the finest close-harmony duets in country history. Until those landmark studio recordings resurface on CD, fans must look to a series of radio transcriptions (or later reunion albums such as In Concert, 1964 or Rounder's 1976 Blue Sky Boys) to get a taste of their affecting sound. Not to fear, however: these transcriptions offer wonderful readings of some of their best-loved secular and spiritual favorites. This collection was recorded in the summer of 1949 for WCYB in Bristol, Virginia, and with the support of fiddler Curly Parker, the Blue Sky Boys show off the style and repertoire of old-time favorites that had been charming country fans for more than a decade. Although there are a number of rousing fiddle tunes, it was the gentle, understated, tender, mellifluous, yet incredibly powerful harmonies that set the pair apart. As the two had sung together since the cradle, Bill's high tenor and Earl's solid baritone meshed magically. It's no wonder that they quit the business in 1951, unwilling to change their pristine sound one iota. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

Real history and great music........2002-01-27
Much of the recorded output of the Blue Sky Boys was of a serious or religious nature and it is from these recordings that most people remember them.
The radio shows show a lighter side complete with comedy in the shape of "Uncle Josh".
Also on many of the songs Bill and Earl Bolick are joined by Curly Parker or Leslie Keith so many of the songs here are actually performed by a trio not a duo.
The peroid atmosphere is further enhanced by the announcements and advertisements from the original radio broadcasts.
There is no such thing as a bad Blue Sky Boys album and it seems a shame that no one has yet put together a comprehensive boxed set of arguably the best of all of the bluegrass brother duos.
For fans of old-time,bluegrass or country this album is a must have along with the others in the series.
It will also have appeal to the social historian but above all should be purchasd to enjoy to mighty talants at heir peak.

Stunning.......2002-01-27
The detailed sleeve notes, written by Bill Bolick are both fascinating and detailed.
The Willys Jeep and new station wagon play a prominent role in the adevertising.
Putting this in the CD player and just closing your eyes
takes you back almost sixty years and you can just get a real feeling for the time, place and context of the music even if you were not around at the time.
Added to this is the fact that the music is about the best old-time/bluegrass you are going to hear and you are left with a truly great album from two truly great artists.
