This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.

But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.
Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-09
The founder of English hymnody is Isaac Watts (1674-1748), whose work in reforming congregational song texts culminated in the publication of his 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in 1707. Watts' collection was as complete and comprehensive a set of hymns as had ever been proposed for English worship and it raised the profile of the hymn sufficiently to overcome the prevailing psalmody. The great flowering period of English hymnody began with the work of the Methodist hymn-writers John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788). The Wesleys gave great prominence to hymns within their Methodist worship and published many books.
The modern hymn book is a collection of hymns drawn from various times and places. This most accomplished recording by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir presents 16 well-loved hymns from 'The New English Hymnal'. A great number of the hymns, which originate from many different eras and traditions, are given an extra musical dimension by John Scott's original descants and thrilling brass arrangements.
Over the years, I have found myself purchasing mostly the recordings of English choirs. They seem to have incredible vocal skills, perfectly executed phrases, flawless diction and some unidentifiable ingredient that makes them very appealing to hear. Of course, I personally enjoy the all male choirs sound; boy sopranos and male altos make the difference. This is a very appealing group of hymns!!!!!

1. Mr. Parkening plays every song on it with remarkable technical excellence and clearly discernible passion.
2. It includes classical, folksy, and reflective material, which could create a rough flow, but Mr. Parkening moves deftly from mood to mood leaving the listener with a sense of seamless transitions.
3. Although the songs on it are all religious classics they are played without pretense, which makes it accessible to any listener and uplifting for those seeking spiritual refreshment.
In closing, the is one thing "wrong" with this CD is it's too short!

Then I bought this album, and I understood why everybody stay around this guy for a while is totally ipnotized: he's guided by sacred flame of art, his songs are made by the flow the goes through his body and his soul, with no sophistication at all.
I can say BJM is the most powerful example of uncontaminated music in America these days.

Bach and Handel Treats.......2000-08-04
I have marveled for years, even when these were two separate LP's, of the power and dimensionality conveyed by the way these works are performed. I still switch from one to another piece as which is my favorite. In this respect, the experience is a hermenutic delight. Any lover or respecter of Bach or Handel would not go wrong by including this collection in their musical library.
When I use the word "treats" in the title, I mean just that: it is a collection of works that one would be hard pressed to find performed together on any available recording. And so I use the metaphor "treat," as if I were given a morsel and then devoured it; and another, and devoured that one, each with a fullness of pleasure and delight, and with soul filling satisfaction.
These indivdual recordings are for the most part masterpieces in and of themselves, and to be able to listen to them as they are performed flawlessly, and in a manner that invites the Spirit of GodÑby saying they are a "treat"Ñis to merely to treat them minimally.
Fine recording, but doesn't work for me........1999-05-07

good soundtrack.......2006-01-13
It is very rare for me to find a soundtrack that contains all the songs i liked from a movie. This is the case! It even has Papa Justify's conjuration of sacrifice, those drums really take you to New Orleans Hoodoo streets. A great complement for the fans of the movie .
Review from Equalmusic.com.......2005-10-28
Composer Edward Shearmur and the Hollywood Studio Symphony bring the flick to life with their bone chilling orchestrations that can creep you out even in the light of day. Those who dig the horror aspect of the film will be pleased with the inclusion of "Conjure of Sacrifice," a spoken track key to the movie's plot. However, the real reason to buy this release is not for its freaky facets but for its spotlight on a few of the most influential blues artists of the twentieth century.
For anyone beginning to cultivate an interest in blues, this is a great foray into the genre and its heavy hitters. First off is Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen." Johnson, who many have dubbed the father of modern rock and roll, delivers his legendary take on Delta Blues with perfection. Mississippi Fred McDowell, master of the slide guitar, whether it be bottleneck or the apocryphal steak bone, lends his "61 Highway Blues" with a kind of raw integrity.
My vote however, goes to celebrated gospel musician, Blind Willie Johnson. His "God Moves On The Water" with its crackly sound quality, delivers a sucker punch to the soul. Johnny Farmer's "Death Letter" is easily the best track the recording has to offer. Farmer, the only bluesman on the disc still alive and kicking it, loans an infectious ditty that seeps into the skin and refuses to be washed away. Haunting and beat driven, the song is given a modern remix by southern rapper, Organized Noize. The marriage of Delta and hip-hop here is flawless.
Of course there are a few missteps and oddities. Blackbud's "Barefoot Dancing" is a jarring departure from the easy bayou theme. The song is ill suited to both movie and soundtrack, a definite skipper. As is Joe Washburn's "The Goldrush," which despite its melodic back music has a whiny quality that's hard to overlook. "Do Watcha Wanna" by Rebirth Brass Band is an interesting addition. It is a lively big band song that puts one in the mood for Mardi Gras. A rare gem is The Dixie Cups' version of the old Indian Mardi Gras chant "Iko Iko." Although given sinister connotations in the film, it is a fun and upbeat addition to the disc.
Seeped in New Orleans' jazz and Cajun music, the CD captures the music of The Big Easy and its surrounding parishes with forthright conviction. With the latest disaster still a fresh wound, the soundtrack as well as the film is jarring in ways that have nothing to do with the practice of voodoo. However, it is its ability to elegantly capture the culture and feel of the place that make both worth looking into. If only for a little while New Orleans's is returned to its former splendor through the music it has become known for. I suggest seeing the movie first then checking out this superb auxiliary.
Spooky good fun!.......2005-09-01

Sure, Thank God It's Friday is widely acknowledged to be a turkey. And, sure, we're getting close to the bottom of the disco barrel. But this soundtrack isn't as atrocious as you might expect, especially if you have a high tolerance for disco's Euro strain. Unlike Can't Stop the Music and its exclusive Village People focus, there are many artists represented here, ensuring a fair amount of nuggets next to abominations like Santa Esmeralda. The tracks produced by Giorgio Moroder and his acolyte Pete Bellotte are particularly lush in a robotic kind of way. Donna Summer's contributions include the classic "Last Dance" and a pretty fabulous version of Serge Gainsbourg's "Je t'Aime Moi Non Plus"--a good 20 years before it was hip to cover him, we might add. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
EVEN HARDCORE DISCO DUCKS DIDN'T LIKE THIS ONE..........2006-05-17
Given their reputation as pop balladeers, the Bee Gees initially seemed like a rather odd choice to anchor a disco soundtrack - that is, until you heard what Barry Gibb brought to the table. As everyone already knows by now, Barry was at his creative peak and the Bee Gees wildly surpassed anyone's expectations - since 1977, Saturday Night Fever still bears the distinction of being the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time. Not so with this dud.
As the joke goes, this was one of those LPs that shipped gold to the retail outlets only to be eventually shipped right back platinum to Casablanca Records. Although the critics loved to bash this movie, there's no denying its appeal as a guilty pleasure to watch and is far more entertaining (and replayable) than this turkey of a soundtrack. Do yourself a favour and get the movie instead.
A nice disco compilation..........2006-01-31
I highly recomend it for every disco fan. You'll love it! The movie has a really bad argument, but it's fun, and you can see Donna Summer acting... for the first and only time. I recomend it too!

A night at The Zoo.......2005-09-12
`Thank God it's Friday' is the soundtrack to the fun filled disco movie of the same name, starring Jeff Goldblum, Ray Vitte, and featuring The Commodores and disco queen Donna Summer. It featured a very noisy night at a disco called The Zoo.
The album made it to #10 in the US and was certified platinum. It featured disco tracks from acts like The Commodores, Cameo, Thelma Houston, Patti Brooks, and Donna Summer.
There were the brilliant, flamenco tinged instrumentals; `Sevilla nights' (great horns and guitars) by Santa Esmeralda and `I wanna dance' by Marathon, the funky horn filled `Too hot to trot' by The Commodores, the bouncy `Find my way' by Cameo, the synthesizer driven jittery `Lovin', livin' & givin'' by Diana Ross (obviously inspired by Donna Summer's `I feel love') and the hi energy `Love masterpiece' by Thelma Houston.
Other standouts include the Motown pastiche of Paul Jabara's `Trapped in a stairway' (he played the part of a guy who got, you guessed it, trapped in a stairway), Patti Brook's smooth and mellow `After dark', the slowed down steamy `Do you want the real thing' by DC Larue, and `Take it to the zoo' by Sunshine, a group comprising Donna Summer's sisters singing a song penned by Summer.
Then comes the highlight. Donna Summer!!! First up is the airy space disco of `With your love'. There is an extended version available on Donna Summer's `Dance collection' CD (along with extended versions of songs like `Hot stuff', `I feel love', and `Dim all the lights' to name a few).
Next is the 8 minute long `Last dance', the first of Summer's trademark ballad intro building into a disco smash, and back to ballad, and fast again. A dramatic piece, this was the highlight of the album and the movie. It won an Oscar, sold a million to earn a gold disc, hit #3 in the US, and won 2 Grammys, one for Donna for best R&B female performance, and 1 for Paul Jabara (songwriter).
Finally, Donna's remake of Serge Gainsbourg's `Je t'Aime Moi Non Plus', a midtempo, 17 minute long moan fest, similar to Summer's `Love to love you baby'.
A trip back in time to when people were carefree and disco ruled...
The #1 DISCO Soundtrack.......2005-07-06
My favorite dance soundtrack: Thank God It's Friday
My favorite dance song (from the TGIF ST): I Wanna Dance by Marathon
(and yes I wish Casablanca had made a 12-inch of this)
If you have the video, Paul Jabara (Last Dance, Trapped in a Stairway) played the guy who should have kept his glasses on. Note: he also co-wrote with Paul Shaffer (David Letterman's band leader) "It's Raining Men" for the Weather Girls.
Also watch for the following gaffs:
After Donna Summer's crying in the ladies' room, her hair gets a new do in a few minutes, which should have taken hours. A rose is placed in her hair, but when she emerges from the ladies' room, it has moved to the other side of her head!
Pyrotechnics during the Commodores set had NO EFFECT on any of the dancers!
The scene where Donna Summer knocks over the pile of 45's to distract the DJ was SO commercially crass that I almost laughed out loud in the movie theatre! There were SO many things wrong, I have to list them: a) DJ's were NOT using 45's in the discos, just 12-inch singles or extended album cuts; b) when this movie was released, Motown was NOT played in the discos in favor of the Euro sound. So when they showed a close-up of the 45's on the floor that the DJ had to pick up, they were ALL Motown (and subsidiary) labels! Wishful thinking on Motown's part.
Ok, back to the soundtrack. I bought TWO copies of this album, just in case I wore one out! It's THAT good!
