Sweetheart's Dance

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
With her fourth album, Pam Tillis finally realizes the sound and persona she's been groping for over the past four years. She moves away from mainstream country to stretch herself on the Tex-Mex of "Mi Vida Loca," the western swing of the title cut and the folk-rock of the Searchers' '64 hit, "When You Walk in the Room." When she moves back to mainstream country on songs like the album's first single, "Spilled Perfume," and the lovely "In Between Dances," she brings an interpretive subtlety and rhythmic naturalness she never had before. Of course, it helps that this is the best batch of songs she's ever had; she co-wrote three of them and her daddy, Mel Tillis, sings bass on "'Til All the Lonely's Gone." --Geoffrey Himes

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2002-04-08

Every cut on this album is excellent. After seeing this band live I HAD to own the cd. Outstanding! A shame they broke up shortly thereafter, to this day I find myself, and my girlfriend humming the tunes. Ripened-peach, Close to you, Queeenie and Suck,- just buy it....

5 out of 5 stars Brilliance from beginning to end........2000-01-03

This album really should have been big. There's really nothing not to like about it. If I were to characterize it stylistically, I would have to say, "Nine Inch Nails meets the B-52's." The sound is hard but playful, with an abundance of experimentation characteristic of either of the aforementioned bands. Meatplow was also one of the few bands I've heard with a sense of humor that didn't render it inane and an angry edge that didn't render it pretentious or brain-dead. Basically, if you enjoy the kinda-sorta industrial NIN sound but find Trent Reznor's pseudo-spookiness annoying, then this is the perfect album.

5 out of 5 stars Carla Knows Music!.......1999-09-14

I loved this album dearly! "Queenie" is a classic. I suggest that you follow this up with other stuff from Carla B. like the bands "Scarnella" or "Geraldine Fibbers".

5 out of 5 stars Weird, disturbing, and really groovy.......1999-05-04

I don't have a clue what they're singing about most of the time, but this music is just so bizarre and fun! Devil's Johnson, Tommy & Ripened Peach are catchy tunes, in their own seductively perverse way. And "Queenie" takes explicit lyrics to a whole new level. Are these guys ever gonna come out with another album???

5 out of 5 stars Sexuality drips like an instrument...........1999-04-19

I saw Ethyl Meatplow at the second Lollapolluza Festival on one of the side stages, and they just blew me away. It was a hot day, and I remember that even Carla had her shirt off, which is just something she would do.... Anyway, this album is awsome and unique and they have great bass sounds that vibrate your speakers and shake your brains around. I, as does the other reviewer, wish they would do some more stuff.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding nineties country album.......2003-12-23

I was fortunate to buy this when it was first released in the UK and included four bonus tracks (three from Put yourself in my place and one from Homeward looking angel), but the ten tracks that form the standard album would have made the purchase well worthwhile anyway.

Mi vida loca (my crazy life) became a number one country hit for Pam. It has a Tex-Mex feel to it and swings along in great style - definitely one to get your toes tapping, as is the next track, Sweetheart's dance. Next comes a brilliant ballad, Calico plains, written and first recorded by Matraca Berg. When you walk in the room is a cover of the Jackie de Shannon song that became a pop hit for the Searchers in the sixties and a number two country hit for Pam. This song is perhaps better known in Britain than America, but it's a great song anyway. The next two tracks, Spilled perfume and I was blown away, provided Pam with further country hits. Four more great songs (They don't break 'em like they used to, In between dances, Better off blue, 'Til all the lonely's gone) complete the standard album.

For fans of nineties country music, this is a truly great album - it sounds contemporary but is still obviously a country album.

5 out of 5 stars Her Career Album.......2002-07-14

While Pam Tillis has produced a string of first-rate country singles, she doesn't always hit the mark when it comes to following through with an album's worth of first-rate material. SWEETHEART'S DANCE is one of those exceptions, however--not only is it inarguably the best album in her catalog, but remains one of the great country albums of the nineties. While her hit parade here continued('Spilled Perfume','In Between Dances',etc.), the album is filled out with equally fine material, chief among them the shuffling title track and the uptempo 'They Don't Break Em Like They Used To'. It's a creative highpoint that she's since failed to surpass.

5 out of 5 stars Best Pam Album.......2001-10-26

This is an outstanding album with a great mix of ballads and up tempo songs. The hits you know and the other songs are outstanding. My only reservation is "Blown Away". It is too lightweight and childish for such a masterpiece album.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to my crazy life!.......2001-10-19

I liked this CD the first time I played it. I was my favorite Pam Tillis CD for a very long time. There were quite a few popular singles from the CD, but the memorable songs that were not released are Matraca Berg's "Calico Plains," and "Til All The Lonely's Gone." Check out the lyrics on the insert.

    2 out of 5 stars ongoing disappointment.......2001-05-31

Put yourself in my place will always be her best album and the one time height of her career. It's like she used most of her most rocking songs (and best ideas) on her first album and since that time couldn't do near as well. How she's made so many lame albums since is because most country folk like constant remakes of past country songs and a lot of slow sappy ballads. Juice Newton did a lot better back in the 80's because she always stuck to country rock and was terrific from album to album and never changed to attract a different audience such as what Pam Tillis has been doing after her first album. On Sweetheart's Dance I only liked four songs because they weren't remakes or slow songs. How anyone could consider this album an equal to Put Yourself In My Place has got to be joking.

          Album Description

Throughout his long and distinguished career Aaron Copland (1900-1990) held a leading position in American classical music. The diversity of his output is extraordinary: it ranges from early avant-garde works to the folkloric and immediately accessible compositions, to experiments with atonality and serialism. Yet, regardless of the stylistic approach, Copland's music, always characterized by clearly shaped structures and easily recognizable and economical thematic material, consistently upholds his highly-set musical ideals. The piano was central to Copland's creative work. He always composed at the keyboard and its sonorities and gestures are clearly discernable in his music. Not only was the piano featured in numerous larger scores but many of his orchestral works were, essentially, original pianistic conceptions written down first for two pianos and orchestrated only later. Not surprisingly, the two- piano versions received several public performances, given by the pianist John Kirkpatrick and Copland himself. Another duo piano partner was the composer's friend and colleague Leonard Bernstein, who not only collaborated with Copland in performance but also made a two-piano arrangement of El Salon Mexico, heard on this CD. Also featured on this disc is the World Premiere recording of Copland's own version of MUSIC FOR THE THEATER for one piano, four hands.

Michael Finnissy is finally getting his due, and this recording is one of a number of excellent recent ones that show him at his quirky best. Finnissy has completely rethought these old standards, going much further than simply taking the melodies and inserting new chords underneath them. Some freedom with the rhythms echo some of the grand old piano transcriptions from the past -- an interesting reference and high praise. And the textures here are crucial: all of the piano lines are important, from top to bottom, and Ian Pace's intelligent renderings make all of this audible.

I hope this disc, as well as Pace's other Finnissy recordings, will push the composer's profile even higher. Many of these would make clever encores in the right context. (And I look forward to those recitals!) Some listeners may find it difficult to absorb too much of this recording at once, since it's all quite concentrated. Three or four of these arrangements at one time might be recommended for newcomers. Nevertheless, this is an outstanding example of Finnissy's creative mind coupled with Pace's exemplary artistry.

Sound quality by Metier is excellent, with Finnissy's complexity put forth with wonderful clarity. A witty, enlightening and very persuasive disc.

3 out of 5 stars not the Finnissy I know.......2000-04-13

Ian Pace is a marvelous pianist of the new or old complexity. He has the entire repertoire of the new under his fingers and mind. He can a be a bit passive however in the live performances I've heard in Chicago in particular. Well he is new to the scene. Finnissy on the the other hand has been making constructing, concocting and mesmerizing those who follow this music for quite some time. Like preaching to the already converted. His music taps nicely into post-modernist thinking, the mileau of utilizing borrowed found objects, already in the world- material but transformed and transmogrified in such a way that the metamorphosis becomes something quite relevant, brilliant and unexpected from the materials given, much like Kafka's insect. Finnissy's piano music is quite literally impossible to play, I don't know who can play it including everyone here mentioned. When for instance you have 72 tones against 57, resulting in an asymmetrical odd bit of musical irrationality(at least within the Western canon)who can do that? . The computer I'm on now the Finale software can play that without a flinch. Gershwin here is not transformed interestingly enough, at least from the perspective of Finnissy's other master piano concoctions like the Verdi Transcriptions or the English Country Tunes. Both those works made the materials sink and respond opaquely, virtuositically becoming part of the blizzards of tones, and filigreed moments scouring and traversing the entire register of the piano. The Gershwin here by contrast seems like a tired pianist sitting in a lounge trying to recapture an old dust-ladened flame, Casablanca? .
