Things don't get much schmaltzier than a Dobro played Hawaiian style, which is why it's fitting that Cowboy Jack Clement offers one up on "The Blue Side of Lonesome," Leon Payne's dated but charming classic--only one such excursion into blue-haired reminiscing on an album of over-the-top sentimentality. It was the legendary Clement who paired smart-ass folkie Prine and bluegrass totem Wiseman, but the singers themselves chose the repertoire, which reads like songs people of a certain age might pick on a dry drunk. The tunes range, believe it or not, from religious hymns to covers of Patti Page's 1957 hit "Old Cape Cod," Kris Kristofferson's underrated "Just the Other Side of Nowhere," and Tom T. Hall's "Old Dogs, Children, and Watermelon Wine," with a little Elvis and Ernest Tubb thrown in for good measure. It's fitting that Prine and Wiseman revisit the Hall standard, since oddly, both singers vocally favor the Nashville storyteller from time to time. But one has to question their use of the Grand Ole Opry's Carol Lee Singers, who show up on several cuts and seem, well, just bizarre on a John Prine record, even as they evoke the lushly famous Nashville Sound of the 1960s. Suffice it to say, this is a quirky project, and if Prine's scratchy baritone and Wiseman's melodic tenor sometimes overlap to where you can't tell who's singing what, it doesn't much matter. You're listening to two new pals having what seems to be the time of their life. --Alanna Nash

4 out of 5 stars Prine and twang.............2007-07-03

I first caught the wind of the country & western direction in John Prine when I heard his earlier CD "In Spite of Ourselves." The Nashville influence has laid a noticable twang on his voice to the extent that the vocals are sometimes hardly recognizable as Mr. Prine. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, on my first listening, I also thought immediately of Tom T. Hall. For long time followers more accustomed to John's rebellious angles (and the wry title, at least, is pure Prine) this CD might be quite a shock. But I accept it as simply the mark of a mature artist stretching himself artistically, not "selling out" for the sake of sales to a mellower audience. My apologies for not commenting more about Mac, I am less familiar with his work but I assume that stylistically this is more in his comfort zone. His vocals bond nicely with John's and this is definitely equality in a duet. A nice relaxing work, accept it for what it is, not what you expect of John Prine.

4 out of 5 stars I guess I'm an "average people.".......2007-06-27

I heard John Prine and Mac Wiseman on NPR one afternoon
and fell in love. Their song choices are wonderful.

3 out of 5 stars A Disappointment ...and so sorry to say it.......2007-06-26

This was such a disappointment. I had looked forward to this for months, having admired Mac Wiseman for over fifty years, and Prine for thirty or so. But this just doesn't work.

The songs are such classics that each singer could do them well while singing by himslef. But there are just no strong emotional tugs from these "collaborations." Mac has done some great work singing with other bluegrass singers, and Prine has been terrific in his work with women singers ... but these two great men never seem to feed off one another. The feel suggests that these guys were not even singing together. I'll lay this away and go back to the many songs that I have by each that are so terrific.

5 out of 5 stars John Prine Love.......2007-06-14

I don't think there is anything John Prine could do to diminish the love we feel for his music in our family. We think he might be America's poet, or one of them anyway. This CD is sweet and lovely and seems like two great guys sitting down playing and singing some nice tunes together and we all get to listen or sing along. "Standard songs for average people..." - the title says it all. Just a sweet ole time with John Prine and, in this case, with Mr. Wiseman, too. I gave this to my husband for our anniversary, along with the recently released John Prine DVD, and we are always just so grateful for great artists and John Prine is surely one.

1 out of 5 stars Awfully corny.......2007-06-12

Sorry, love nearly all of JP's output but this is the worst I've ever heard, schmaltzy, corny, cringe-inducing, hurts me to say but it's the way I would see it. Bought it blind on the strength of all John's other stuff and regretted it immediately. If everyone else thinks it's great, maybe I can get my money back on ebay...

5 out of 5 stars ~Look At Me Now~.......2007-05-24

Kirk Franklin is remarkable...just when you think he can't out-do himself, he goes and out-does himself. The single "Look At Me Now" reminds me a bit of Hosanna because of it's blistering pace and perfect construction. The music completely fills the space without losing it's sharpness. I love the horns...i love how crisp the voices are...i love the lyrics. Even though you wouldn't expect a song titled, "Look At Me Now" to be a humble look at one's past, it is.

"Look at me now!
I'm stronger this time around!
Not because I was so good, but somehow
You looked past where I was
And you knew I'd come through cause You loved me
Look at me now!"

Kirk never fails to mention God's grace, he recognizes scripture and uses it appropriately and in context. I love this guy!

4 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Uplifting.......2007-01-17

This CD is very uplifting, and includes some of my favorite tracks from Kirk Franklin. I would recommend it for those times when you are feeling down and you need encouragement. This was a good purchase.

5 out of 5 stars He does it again.......2006-12-01

Don't be fooled, if you think your getting an album of new music your not, however you are getting a great collection of Kirk Franklin's songs that I'm sure has brought many of us through our storms. There is also one new song on this album called "Look at me now". I have to admit when I first heard this song I didn't not like it at all. Then I listened to it again and have been touched by it every since. It's a very upbeat song that gives the statement "I been through alot of things in my life, but look at me now, look where God has brought me from". I get joy everytime I hear this song and think about those things. Great collection of old classics and a new song that is sure to keep you praising. For Kirk Franklin fans, this is a must have!

Amazon.com essential recording

Sinatra already had one youthful career behind him by the time he made Songs for Swingin' Lovers! His were no longer the lustrous pipes of the kid crooner from Hoboken--the voice that made bobbysoxers swoon--but from the first notes of the opening track ("You Make Me Feel So Young") he seems to have discovered a musical fountain of youth that fully justifies the exclamation point in the album title. There's a buoyant new spring in his step, accented by Nelson Riddle's lighter-than-air arrangements, that makes the Columbia records of Sinatra's younger days sound stiff and stodgy in comparison. Even chestnuts like "Old Devil Moon," "Pennies from Heaven," "Makin' Whoopee," and "Anything Goes" are rejuvenated by his vibrant touch. Put this alongside his previous Capitol album, In the Wee Small Hours, and you have the definitive statements by both sides of Sinatra's mature musical personality: the lonely "saloon singer" and the swaggering, sophisticated swinger. Sinatra's carefree confidence achieves its supreme expression in "I've Got You Under My Skin," a performance that builds steadily to an ecstatic climax. Cole Porter may have hated his lyrical embellishments, but by the time the singer jauntily breaks the "fourth wall" on "Anything Goes" ("...may I say before this records spins to a close..."), you can't deny he's taken the title to heart. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Quite Possibly the Greatest Sinatra Album of All Time--And One of the Greatest Albums of All Time.......2007-06-19

For sheer joy and energy, this is Sinatra at his apex. Every song is excellent, with crystal-clear sound, brassy horns, top-notch Nelson Riddle arranging, and Sinatra at his vocal best. This album is often listed as one of the top 100 albums in any genre ever made, in often eclectic lists including everything from the Beatles to Nirvana to Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and the Beach Boys. And though it's hard to narrow it down to one album, this is in my opinion Sinatra's best. The songs are upbeat, and there is no way one can listen to this album without feeling better about life.

I have this on both CD and vinyl. The sound quality on the CD is clear and sharp.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Albums of all times.......2007-06-10

This is one of the greatest albums ever.
If you want some upbeat romantic songs, this is it.
If you want a great 2nd marriage song for your 1st dance , new kinda love is or you.

5 out of 5 stars Too marvelous for words.......2007-02-28

Frank Sinatra polished and perfected his style and expertise to incredible heights by the 1950s. Songs For Swingin' Lovers demonstrates how Frank Sinatra could deliver a song beautifully and masterfully. The liner notes correctly state that by this point in his career Frank had "learned to tease and twist a vocal line without violating its integrity." Moreover, Nelson Riddle ably assists Sinatra by providing sublime musical arrangements for all the songs on this CD. Frank and Nelson make each song so beautiful that you would swear you were hearing these songs for the very first time! There is a freshness to each number that stuns you. Excellent!

The CD opens with the Frank Sinatra signature song "You Make Me Feel So Young." Frank's voice has matured into a strong, masculine and potent force that could caress a song or belt it out depending on how Sinatra thought it should be performed. The big band arrangement by Riddle shines, too. This track alone is worth the entire cost of the CD!

"It Happened In Monterey" follows; this song has a beautiful intro by the musicians and Sinatra sings this number with all the panache of the most consummate professional ever! "It Happened In Monterey" explores a romantic affair that may well have been Frank's one true love even if he was already committed to another woman.

Other great classic numbers on this CD include the playful "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me;" "Too Marvelous For Words" which deals with the joy Frank experiences with his new lover; "Pennies From Heaven" with its great orchestration and the amusing song entitled "Makin' Whoopee" by Donaldson and Kahn.

"Our Love Is Here To Stay" gets the super-duper romantic treatment from The Chairman Of The Board; Riddle's arrangement helps to make this number an instant Frank Sinatra classic. "Anything Goes" again demonstrates the magic Sinatra and Riddle infuse into a song to make it so very special.

The CD ends with "How About You?" written by Lane and Freed. Sinatra asks his new love if she likes all the same pleasures in life that he values so much. "How About You?" also draws you in so that you experience the irresistible temptation to listen to the entire CD all over again!

The liner notes boast great cover art and the song credits are provided, too. Pete Welding contributes an essay about the work that Sinatra and Riddle did together.

Sinatra fans should consider this CD to be a "must-have" for their collection; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will treasure this album, too. If you enjoy this CD I highly recommend other Sinatra CDs. Diehard Sinatra fans will also want to get Frank Sinatra: Vegas which features four CDs and a DVD as well.

Thank you, Frank and Nelson!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Awful mastering muddies up a truly great album.......2007-02-23

You'll see other postings here that discuss the details of what Capitol's engineer did on this 1998 release to reduce hiss, etc. Believe it. Compared to the 1991 version of the disc or the better Mobile Fidelity gold disc (1990) this version is awful. It's like a bucket of mud was dumped over his vocals. There are a bunch of threads on this topic on the forums of Steve Hoffman, one of the best sound engineers in the business. But the bottom line is most people who care about this music would like to see Capitol go back to the original master tapes and treat Frank right. The mastering issues apply to a lot of the 1998 Sinatra discs labeled "Entertainer of the Century" on the side.

5 out of 5 stars A Must.......2007-02-14

This is the album to have for any Frank Sinatra fan.
I think this is the best representation of Frank's finest vocal years.
Every track on the album is good.

What's great for Ben Folds fans —true fans, not the kind who signed on after hearing 1997's un-Ben-like radio hit "Brick" —is that Songs for Silverman picks up right where the excellent Ben-comes-into-his-own Rockin' the Suburbs left off in 2001. These are heartfelt songs: sometimes cheeky and occasionally heartbreaking. "Gracie," written in a hopeful key for Folds' young daughter, unravels to playful but brilliant piano plinks; "Late," for the departed singer/songwriter Elliott Smith, sidesteps straight-on sadness to convey a sense of lost camaraderie; and the clear-eyed "Landed," delivered in Folds' unadorned, tree-trunk sturdy voice, will inspire untold revelations for those stuck in stalled relationships. The music, meantime, maintains its sharp edge: "You to Thank" juts out with the help of a two new players in a celebratory jazz direction, while "Give Judy My Notice" dabbles in country and a chorus swells for "Jesusland." Throughout, Folds' piano work remains a pop-music goodie bag that defies duplication. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Ben hasn't missed a beat yet........2007-06-10

I respectfully disagree with Gabriel's Buddy. There are a few tracks on this album that I wouldn't hesitate to use in a Ben Folds introduction. While it *might* not include any of his top five songs, historically speaking, I can hardly think of anything negative to say about this album.

One or two tunes here are a little more derivative than most things Ben puts out, complete with Steely Dan influences (particularly in Give Judy My Notice). However no artist can be 100% innovative on every track they compose, and Ben continually weaves a tapestry that is NEVER humdrum - even when he lightly chooses from the influence of his past.

4 out of 5 stars Good album, but Ben is getting middle aged.......2006-10-15

The tunes are catchy and some are even good, but I don't find any of the music special. There was always an edge to Folds' music, something he was rebelling against or exploring.

However, in this album Ben reaches middle age, writing songs about his daughter and other tunes with good melodies but otherwise unmemorable. If you are a fan, certainly get this and add it to your collection. You will like it and listen to it many times. But this isn't the CD you pull out when you want to share Ben Folds with someone who doesn't know him. Then you pull out Rockin' the Suburbs or Whenever and Ever. Even his LP, Sunny 16, has a bit more variety than this album even though that had only 5 songs.

It is good to grow up and not all songs can be about high school or one's teenage years. Bruce Springsteen remained relevent during such a transition, Billy Joel did not. Ben's following Mr. Joel's path.

5 out of 5 stars Best Ben Folds CD EVER!.......2006-10-08

Ben Folds is one of my favorite artists out there and this CD is his best. He writes the most inteligent lyrics and he has a since of humor at the same time.
B*****d 9.75/10 well written and classic Ben Folds. My 2 favorite song on the album

You to thank 9/10 Great piano and good lyrics.

Jesusland 9.5/10 weird song but very catchy.

Landed 10/10 Best song on the album.

Gracie 8.75/10 not the best but its cool he wrote it for his daughter.

Trusted 9.25/10 really cool music and lyrics.

Give Judy My Notice 8/10 not the best on the album.

Late 8.5/10 Weirdest song on the CD.

Sentimental Guy 9.5/10 Great slow song.

Time 9.75/10 Freaking awesome!

Prison Food 9/10 Really good song

5 out of 5 stars Different, but still great!.......2006-10-04

It's not Rockin the Suburbs. There. I said it. But why would you want it to be? This album is much more mellow, but it still has the signature Ben piano licks, it's just a much more contemplative album. His sense of humor is still evident though, on tracks like Jesusland.
Overall: Great Album. 5/5.

5 out of 5 stars Every bit as good as Rockin' the Suburbs.......2006-09-09

I don't see why so many people are putting this album down and saying that it's not as good as Rockin' the Suburbs. This is not the case. Sure, overall, Rockin' the Suburbs has a stronger selection of songs, but Songs for Silverman is much more cohesive of an album, and thus results in being equally if not moreso an engaging and satisfying listen than Rockin' the Suburbs, which I believe suffers slightly in song continuity (I mean, Fired into The Luckiest? come on). Don't be deterred by the slightly less level of praise this album is receiving than Ben's earlier works. You would be doing yourself a big disfavor by passing up this gem of an album.

Taken in one concentrated best-of dose, it becomes evident what a coup the B-52's pulled off when they turned their own concentrated craziness into genuine hits. This is some of the weirdest stuff ever to make the charts, much less be loved by the masses. It's all here though--the mad surf guitar of Ricky Wilson (and later Keith Strickland), the banshee wails of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson, and, of course, the, um, well, let's say vocalizing of freaky Fred Schneider. "Party out of Bounds" with a "Rock Lobster" on "Planet Claire," or "Roam" over to the "Love Shack" in "Private Idaho." Whatever you do in the B-52's universe will at least be good, clean, perverse fun. Contains two new songs. --Michael Ruby

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars B-52 is the bomb.......2007-06-02

Awesome compilation of the B52s kind of off-beat, wacky, yet lovable and totally listenable music. The lyrics of many tunes are weird but funny. Scneider's goofy singing style somehow works well too. Lots of tracks here, including lesser-known gems. Especially cool tunes: Rock Lobster, Private Idaho, Mesopotamia [kinda eerie in a way], Love Shack [probably the one with most radio play back in the day], Roam, and Good Stuff. But all are solid. Very good CD to pop in and just let play, no need to be anywhere near the skip button.

5 out of 5 stars B-52's - 'Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation' (Reprise).......2007-05-15

Review number 62. Fantastic eighteen track retrospect compilation of this reunited TOP of the line '80's new wave band. As for this genre of music, it JUST doesn't get much better than this. I saw the B-52's play a free gig at an outdoor mall just last summer and it was honestly one of the funnest concerts I've attended in sometime. As for this CD, you get to fully experience once again the college radio staples and some of the band's lesser known goodies, like "Planet Claire", "52 Girls", "Party Out Of Bounds", the unreleased 'original' edit for "Summer Of Love", "Love Shack", "Roam", the awesome "Is That You, Mo-Dean?" plus two new cuts, of which both are good. What, no "Dance This Mess Around" ? That's my personal B-52's favorite of all time. Nonetheless, 'Time Capsule' is still highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars B-52's.......2007-02-03

I saw Rock Lobster done "live" on Saturday Night live back in the early 80's. They did a good job. I thought that they were just another Punk band. But they showed their Pop sensiblities with "Rock Lobster." It didn't hurt that it turned out to be one Major hit! Of course, "Love Shack" and "Mesopotamia" were not far behind. A classic album all the way around - Five stars for the B-52's Tan-Ru!! (whatever that means...)

5 out of 5 stars Hair Today, Here Tomorrow.......2006-06-10

Every once in a very long while a thoroughly delightful group appears out of nowhere with something new to say and a distinct, immediately identifiable way of saying it. Such is the case with the B-52's who pull off a nearly impossible trick and make it look easy. For starters, they are musically intoxicating and certainly can't be topped for dance party appeal. The vocal blend of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson is a lovely, natural fit, and Fred Schneider's droll, spoken word additions provide an effective and often hilarious counterpoint. Keith Strickland knows that a band like this needs basic, pure drumming, nothing flashy, and he delivers. The late, lamented Ricky Wilson provided great retro surf guitar, right on time and target. The frequent use of left-field sound effects sprinkles the songs with splendid surprises.

The song writing, especially lyrics, is always slightly cracked and completely charming. Catchy tunes devoted to poorly planned parties, ruins in Mesopotamia, and making love in strobe light are delivered without irony; no matter how absurd the subject it all seems to make sense when the B-52's do it. As good as these individual contributions are, it is the collective vibe and sensibility that sends this group over the top, their Own, Private I Don't Know is recognizable from 100 paces.

While several anthology CDs are currently available, this one shines most brightly. I was considering the 2-CD compilation, Nude On The Moon, but decided against it after learning about the alternate mixes, etc. Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation has the absolute requisite B-52's hits you can't live without, and plenty more besides. Nice to know that future generations will have quality neo-absurdist surf-guitar dance party music to enjoy - they'll need it.

3 out of 5 stars summer of love.......2006-04-17

This is worth picking up for the remix "Summer of Love" alone. Much like another song based on the hot season - Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" - the track is fast-paced yet has a haunted, melancholy feel to it, as if something is lost forever. Quite a departure from the kitschy party songs the band is known for.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This CD!.......2007-07-13

If you are even browsing for a childrens/adult friendly CD with traditional songs about America, buy this CD. Almost every song brought back memories of myself in elementary school during the bicentennial. My 2, 4 and 6 years old all love it and ask to play it all the time. Be warned, however, after listening to it for 2 hours straight in the car, parents may tire of even the best songs.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-09

I bought 2 copies of this CD. One for our school and one for home. My children, (2 4 year olds and a 3 year old) just love listening to this in the car and they are now learning all the words to some great patriotic songs. Children relate very well to this music because it is young children singing rather than the typical adult choir. I would recommend this CD for any family with young children who want them to sing and be musically active!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Traditional CD - A Must Have.......2005-09-30

This CD is wonderful. The songs are traditional versions of all the classic America sounds like This Land is Our Land. The kids that sing on the CD do a great job and the songs are easy to sing along with. My 10 yr old and 5 yr old beg to listen to it in the car and at home. The CD ends with the Pledge of Allegance which has taught my 5 yr old how to say it perfect. I highly recommend this CD for any house. I only wish it was split track.....it's not!

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2002-12-01

This cd is wonderful. We have three generations that love this cd. The songs are great as well as the singing. Highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Soviet Army Band & Chorus aren't taking any prisoners!.......2007-05-12

If you enjoy a good stiring martial male chorus then spend some time with these guys. They're all graduates of Soviet musical acadamies and any one of them could have graced the top opera houses of the world. You don't have to know any Russian to appreciate this CD. The songs are glorious (just don't translate them -- machine guns, death to foes, etc.), and will make you want to march on Berlin all over again.

5 out of 5 stars Good music........2007-03-09

I had heard a few songs by the Red Army Choir in the past and happened upon this CD set a while back, I found it to be far better than I had hoped and would reccoment it to anyone who enjoys Russian folk music, choir in general, and cultural items from when Russia was still the Soviet Union.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!.......2007-02-27

I'm so glad I stumbled onto this.

Spirited, committed, manly singing. Soul-shaking stuff! The ensemble is incisive; soloists are marvelous. The folk melodies are enchanting. The songs--and the singers--are bound up in the cultural fabric of the Cossacks, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky...on and on.., Chekhov, Trotsky, Nabakov... This music conveys the great romantic, dignified, boistrous soul of the Russian People. (Loosely speaking. Some members of the chorus were presumably of other nationalities once part of the Soviet Union. And some of the songs are not Russian).

I don't speak Russian, but listening to this makes me wish I did. What a beautiful-sounding language it is.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2007-02-22

Even though I cannot speak Russian, the quality of this choral group is beyond excellent. Many of these pieces are extremely moving and stirring. The rendering of the Soviet anthem and the song "Let's Go" (V'put) come to my mind. "Let's Go" became a huge hit in Russia when it was featured in a movie about the Great Patriotic War, and indeed, hearing it - you can well imagine ranks upon ranks of hard-eyed, grim-faced Soviet soldiers striding into battle against the Wehrmacht.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate collection.......2004-06-15

Excellent performance by the choir and the orchestra. The grandeur, the charm, and the romance! Great collection of songs, sure to bring back memories!

While countless fans flock to see soprano Renee Fleming's performances of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro because she's got the voice and the dramatic ability to handle such meaty roles, the versatile singer throws her fans a curveball on Haunted Heart, singing popular standards and ballads as well as a few altered classical pieces. In her liner notes, Fleming calls this album a "look back at the road not taken" -- she played a weekly gig in a jazz club while in school. Nonetheless, her feel for the material here is undeniable. Interestingly, she drops her voice a full octave from her usual tessitura, and the change reveals a robust gospel-oriented approach filled with dramatic breaths and moans. The lyrical Fred Hersch (piano) and the idiosyncratic Bill Frisell (guitar) provide support, and both are adventurous jazz players who create subtle and uniquely haunting backdrops. It adds up to an interesting cross-section of ideas well carried off by the generous talents of all involved. --Tad Hendrickson

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Sublime and ridiculous.......2007-06-13

The sublime: much of the artistry of this recording is about sound, and the subtle blending/responding of voice with guitar sounds and / or piano sounds. It is in the sensitive musical interplay between the artists where this effort shines. Definitely not recommended for road trips!

The ridiculous: Fleming ended the majority of most phrases in most of the songs with a guttural of some sort which for me becomes irritating to the point of distraction. These punctuations are mostly quite awful: really tasteless, clumsy, and overused big time and I'm amazed at how this ever got released. Without these ersatz testifyin' noises this CD would be stunning.

So, if you have the ability and inclination to edit out this garbage from your perception as you listen I think you'll be glad you experienced these artists at work together. (Unfortunately I'm not up to it).

2 out of 5 stars Eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww.......2007-06-06

Ugh. Like a manufactured home vs. a stick-built house, Fleming's manufactured (aka "training and technique") blues voice compares unfavorably to other jazz/blues singers/lounge acts. Would not, COULD not, listen to this recording straight through--one big long, breathy, minor key train wreck in the making. Took the CD on a road trip and had to pull over and remove from queue--either that or drive into a wall.

3 out of 5 stars Better than I thought it would be.......2007-04-10

I have to admit, Haunted Heart was a lot better than I thought it would be,especially her recordings of "River", "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress, "My Cherie Amour" and "In my life".
I think this is the most artistically successful recording of Pop/Jazz by a classical singer. I enjoyed it even better than the Anna Sophie Von Otter'/ Elvis Costello CD.
The perspective I am coming from is that of a classical singer who started out as a pop singer/songwriter. I perform and teach cross-genre but love a world class instrument such as Flemming's
I wanted to get the perspective of a friend who used to sing jingles and is also a trained singer but is usually critical of any attempts that opera singers make at crossing -over.
My friend is very familiar with Flemming's voice, but did not recognise it in this context when I played the CD for her. Her reaction was very complimentary, although she did comment that the diction was a bit strange.
She then played it for her brother a well known jazz singer and arranger who had a somewhat negative reaction. He found the singing to be overly dark and round. He prefers a cleaner more 'spoken' approach to this style of singing. I understand this perspective and therefore personally prefer Ella to Sarah as well, but let's not get too picky. Obviously, Rene Flemming is of the Sarah Vaghan School of jazz singing, which is not too shabby.

I will continue to enjoy this CD and will wait for another opera diva to top this one. But, somehow I think the next really good CD of Pop/ jazz from an opera star will also come from Rene.

To those who have been unreasonably mean and negative towards her, I can only say you are not fit to polish her shoes!

5 out of 5 stars Brava Renee.......2007-04-09

This talented woman can sing anything. I really enjoyed this cd with the lights turned down and a glass of wine to relax after a very stressful day at work. Renee could definitely have another singing career outside of opera should she choose. Hearing her drop that gorgeous voice down one octave rivals the best chanteuses in the business - Cassandra Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Regina Belle, Sarah Vaughan, etc. This cd of different musical styles reminds me of Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson, two great singers whom could interpret any song genre and make their versions special. I loved all the songs and the standouts here are "Haunted Heart", "River", "My One and Only Love", "My Cherie Amour", "Cancao do Amor", and Beatles "In My Life", and "Hard Times Come Again No More".
I hope Renee keeps recording whatever catches her fancy because I'll certainly always listen.

5 out of 5 stars Art is always new. .......2007-03-10

Renee Fleming is an artist bringing us something new, and beautiful. The poor will always be with us as manifest in those who resent other's movement from their established zones. Renee Fleming is a great female voice with accomplishments her detractors will never have, but in their dreams.

I welcome Renee's elan demonstrated with her recent recordings, Love sublime with Brad Mehldau, and Haunted Heart with Fred Hersch and Bill Frissell. Bravery, fun, and talent combined by artists and for people who are listening. Hearing long time favorites Mehldau, Hersch, and Frissell is all the more sublime.

1 out of 5 stars Eeww!.......2006-06-19

This is like the music to one of those theme park Celebrate America type shows. The musical arrangements have that hokey, somewhat dated, overly sweet and enthusiatic feel I hate. I thought I was getting the standard versions of these songs but what I got was the cruise ship extravaganza, yuck!

1 out of 5 stars this land is your land.......2006-04-17

to think that "this land is your land" is a patriotic song is laughable at best, however is a common misconception of the song. you'd think that the creators of this cd would research the songs they put on the cd a little more, and find that "this land is your land" is actually a protest song (original lyrics contained lyrics such as "on that sign there it said private property/but on the other side it didn't say nothing/that side was made for you and me", an obvious attack on capitalism".

4 out of 5 stars America's Favorite Patriotic Songs.......2005-09-30

The title says it all.
Good old fashioned "goose bump" music.

4 out of 5 stars Great Place to Start a Patriotic Music Collection.......2002-09-12

This choral collection features a majority of the best known and loved patriotic songs from our country's history. I'll admit I was a little leery of the choral part when I first picked it up, but I've found that, for the most part, it works really well.

It especially stands out on the acappella version of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." It's absolutely stunning. Other fun songs are "This Land is Your Land," which I really wasn't familiar with before I bought this, and a personal recent favorite song "God Bless the USA." I love having the "Armed Forces Medley" on here so I can learn these songs. And the instrumental arrangement on "Stars and Stripes Forever Medley" at the end has me taping my toes every time I hear it.

There are a couple missteps, however. I've heard better versions of "The Star Spangled Banner." I think one reason I'm disappointed with it is that they only include one verse. I love the other verses of our national anthem, and wished they'd included at least one more since they included multiple verses of all the other songs. Also, "If My People" and "God Save America," while find songs, just don't seem to fit here.

Overall, you can't go wrong with this collection. I'm just starting to look for patriotic music, and this has been a wonderful first CD.

If you are a fan of classical guitar than this is a must own set. I enjoy every moment.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2006-12-23

I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves music--period! Christopher Parkening is unquestionably one of the greatest classical guitarists of all-time. He embodies personal excellence like no other and is a brilliant artist. This CD is a must-have for any classical enthusiast. My favorite pieces include: Tárrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra," "Romance," Bach's "Prelude No. 6," and Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez." There are other versions of these pieces as well, but I always prefer Parkening's renditions, as they are oh so extraordinary--especially the recording of Aranjuez!! Other guitarists never seem to capture the essence of Rodrigo's musical masterpiece (e.g., Göran Söllescher in "Mad About Guitars"). But Parkening did! And the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was a perfect accompaniment.

This CD is definitely worth buying. Included is a CD booklet, which illustrates the history of Parkening's illustrious career, interesting tidbits about all 25 recorded pieces, and several photos of his early life to his "breathtaking performance" at Rodrigo's 90th birthday celebration at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1992.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-05-08

I am not going to go into great detail. I am working on a degree in classical guitar and I can say this is something to strive for. His musical interpretation of the peices represented here are some of the best I've heard. His tone, color, and phrasing is incredible.

5 out of 5 stars A gentleman musical agreement! .......2006-03-16

In guitar ` s playing there have been many renowned performers, gifted of exuberant technique. But curiously the Apollonian playing is not by itself strictly enough. The guitar is the instrument which is closer to heart as any other one. It demands from you passion and sentiment. There have been three well known guitarists, one of them from England and the other one from Spain and the third one from Japan whose sensibility was totally absent in their performances.

But fortunately for us, there have been notable interpreters that have been maintained a desired balance and contrast between brain and heart, achieving great distinction and total acknowledgement around the world. I would name seven primordial names along the instrument `s story. First of all: the mythic soloist Andres Segovia, Regino Sainz de la Maza, John Williams, Alirio Diaz, Manuel Berrueco, Siegfried Behrend and Christopher Parkening, among the most representative ones of a great list.

Christopher Parkening `s career has made a brilliant colorist, an impeccable and sensitive interpreter of this well reduced repertoire. His profound artistic conviction and convincing phrasing has been a perpetual motive of constant invitations and presentations around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Extreme virtuosity.......2005-09-25

CP has become my chief inspiration to improve as a classical guitarist. His performances here are, without exception, phenomenal. He makes the most difficult pieces sound effortless. I prefer CP over John Williams because, while Williams is also unquestionably a master, he sounds a bit robotic to me at times. CP, on the other hand, never sacrifices musicality to precision. He sublimely maintains both.
