MUST HAVE!.......2004-09-07
Do yourself a favour get this Double album in 1. I truly feel that all the songs in the CD are made with perfection.
And I will also say that this probably David's best CD.
Bear Family did a great job. I only hope that they release all the albums DAC ever made.

The beginnings of an interesting career.......2003-08-03
He wrote many of his own songs but did not rely entirely on his own material. Indeed, the song David is best remembered for (You never even called me by my name) was actually written by Steve Goodman. It may have been just another sad country song, but when Steve Goodman suggested to David that it was the perfect country song, David pointed out that it wasn't because several country themes were missing. Steve wrote an extra verse to make it perfect, after which David recorded it, including some narrative as well as the extra verse.
Apart from that song, you can find covers here including Desperados waiting for a train (Guy Clark), The 33rd of August (Mickey Newbury) and the children's song The old grey goose is dead.
These two excellent albums got David's career off to a great start. This is the first of a series of twofers released by Bear Family.

All the essential hits and some other great songs.......2005-02-24
All Glen's UK hits are included except one minor hit (Dream baby). Among the classic songs to be found here (not all of them UK hits) are Gentle on my mind, By the time I get to Phoenix, Dreams of the everyday housewife, Wichita lineman, Reason to believe, Galveston, Where's the playground Susie, Try a little kindness, All I have to do is dream (with Bobbie Gentry), Honey come back, It's only make believe, Rhinestone cowboy, Country boy you got your feet in LA, Southern nights and Sunflower.
Brian Wilson of the Beach boys wrote Guess I'm dumb, on which Glen was backed by the Honeys, an excellent female trio. True grit was the theme from the movie starring John Wayne, in which Glen also appeared.
Although Glen recorded many great songs that didn't make it on to this compilation, this will suffice for anybody who just wants a single CD of Glen's music containing all the obvious classics and a few other goodies.

Two of his best, a great match of artist & producers..........2007-04-22
Of course, I am in no way diminishing the contribution of the artist. Glen Campbell is one of the finest guitarists of his generation. He played lead in some of the recordings of Frank Sinatra, The Champs, and The Beach Boys as well as countless others. As good as he is as a guitarist, he was even better as a vocalist. The great Brian Wilson personally selected Campbell as his replacement in the touring version of the Beach Boys.
The second album paired with Rhinestone Cowboy, Bloodline, was unfamiliar to me until my purchase of this CD. It is once again, with Lambert and Potter, and it does not disappoint. While it did not share the same degree of commercial success, it features ten well crafted songs from various writers including Jimmy Webb to whom Campbell owed much of his early chart success.
If you like Glen Campbell, you'll really enjoy this collection. The CD is from a fantastic Australian reissue label, Raven. Not only do they present the orginial albums in great sound, they also include bonus tracks on most of their reissues. This one includes three.
At Last! Praise Be!.......2003-05-12
the RHINESTONE COWBOY album on CD? Why? Why? Why?
One of the best albums of the era, with Campbell in top form--
We've been playing this over and over since it arrived from
Amazon. Many of the cuts are available on other
disks, but this album, with these songs in exactly the right order, is a classic. I love it. My husband loves it. I almost wept with happiness the first time I heard it again after all these years. And BLOODLINE is a great runner up.
It's been a long time coming.......2002-08-11
At last, Campbell fans old and new can enjoy this great music again. Campbell was and always will be popular for blending country and pop music and on these two albums one can tell why this is so. Both albums contain songs that rank among the best Campbell has ever recorded: The sparse arrangement of Randy Newman's "Marie" on "Rhinestone Cowboy" has as much emotional strength as everything on "Reunion"; "Comeback" and "We're Over" are almost equally strong. The same holds true for the material on "Bloodline": "Christiaan No", a Webb song, has been available elsewhere but it's good to hear the song together with other great songs like "Lay me down (roll me out to sea), written by "Rhinestone Cowboy" author Larry Weiss, the title track "Bloodline" or the lovely "San Francisco is a lonely town". This is great stuff - enjoy it.
And as for Capitol? There is still a lot of material to re-issue, e.g. the great "Try a Little Kindness" album" or "Houston"(the title song of which is a bonus track on the reviewed CD. Come on, guys, do us a favor, for a change.

Economical package of mostly live recordings.......2005-10-14
CD 1 begins with broadcast recordings, consisting mostly of songs that are very country and whether you like them depends on your musical tastes. "White Lightning" is very infectious and "Burning Bridges" is well-done. The second half is mostly pop standards, which is not Glen's forte. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" are OK, but pale in comparison with Elvis's recordings of these songs. "The Impossible Dream" is so-so and "Feelings" is weak.
CD 2 is an excellent live set recorded in Branson. Glen does a great job with all his big hits, plus three songs there were new in 1994: "Mansion in Branson" is clever and greatly appreciated by the audience; "Here in the Real World" is an enjoyable country song; "No More Night" (not "No More Nights", as listed on the CD) is a wonderful and powerful Christian song.
CD 3 is another live set with some of his hits, but lots of songs not usually associated with Glen. Again, Glen is in good voice, but the sound is fuzzy at times, especially on "Please Come to Boston". That is regrettable since Glen mimics the folk sound of the original recording and it could have been a nice cover. "Crying" is enjoyable, but no one can match the great Roy Orbison. The fine song "Lovin' Arms" is done well, but again not as good as Elvis's version. He has a rollicking good time with "Rollin' in My Sweet Baby's Arms" and includes a nice version of the rockabilly "Milk Cow Blues."
Overall, this set provides good variety with a mix of all his big hits along with several songs that are hard to find elsewhere.
