Usually, groups wait until they've released at least three or four records before putting out a live album, but PNYC was too good an idea for Portishead to turn down. Recorded with a full orchestra on a cold, rainy day shortly after the release of their second record, Portishead, the project doubled as a live album and the soundtrack for a BBC documentary. In addition to being economical and perhaps lucrative, the disc demonstrates how sampled and sequenced music can be re-created in concert without losing any of the charm or dynamics of the original recordings. All it takes is a 22-piece string section, some horns, and a band whose tightness is exceeded only by its creativity. At times the performances on PNYC sound even more breathtaking and cinematic than Portishead's original recordings, as humming theremin, skittery scratching, and gliding strings mingle with stealthy guitar lines and sultry vocals. For Portishead, sour times seem like a distant memory. --Jon Wiederhorn

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars if not for the "Roads" clap-along.......2006-11-26

I remember listening to this album when it first came out, and it's aged pretty well, but for the turn-table bits. Those are an acquired taste. Overall, the Roseland recording improves on almost every song in their catalog -- an exceedingly rare feat for any band. The best you can usually expect is a clean recording, but Portishead goes much further by "re-imagining" each song with orchestral backing. And the results are such that you might find yourself mesmerized by songs that never did much for you before. And they don't screw up the songs that were already good, except perhaps for "Sour Times."

Unfortunately, the most beautiful song, "Roads," is marred by an enthusiastic audience clap-along. All throughout the album, you'll note that the audience is a surprisingly muted presence for a live album (muted in the mix phase, not in the raw audio, it sounds like). But they come out in cheerful force... to the aid of the most haunting and lonesome Portishead song I've ever heard. The incongruity doesn't recede with repeated listens, either. At least the band manages to drown these yahoos out during the peaks.

It makes me wonder if they had the audience on separate mikes and could release a version that doesn't include that part. Wishful thinking, though. If there was a chance that Portishead was still around and putting out more stuff, it wouldn't irk me so much. But this is all we got -- three albums, one of which is this live "greatest hits" recording. In other words, not much. (I don't count Glory Times because it's a remix album, and barely one at that.)

5 out of 5 stars Terrific concert!!.......2006-08-15

This disc was the first one I heard from Portishead. After a couple of listenings I was kind of confused about the rhythms, voice tones, samplers and musical instruments. At the end you would love all this stuff and how they have conceptualized the idea of music without barriers, without all that common rhythms that have appeared in music history. I would strongly recommend this disc for every one who has never listened to Portishead, it is the starting point to enjoy all their creations.

5 out of 5 stars Not the first to say it...this release is amazing........2006-03-04

I love electronica, I like orchestral music. In this release they have the perfect union. Even my friends who have a hard time listening to electronic/ambient music really, really like this release. If you are a serious music aficionado you must own this. This is a stunning piece of work that will spin on and on in all types of players and in all kinds of places.

5 out of 5 stars Truly amazed.......2005-12-09

This has to be one of the best live CDs I've ever had the pleasure of owning. Typically I wouldn't recommend a live CD to a new fan, but this is different. I listen to this disc much more than the studio albums. Something about working with a live orchestra brings out the nuances and subtleties of the music. The DVD is exceptional too and contains additional songs and some different versions of the songs on the CD.
This is one of my favorite albums of the last couple of years.
-James

5 out of 5 stars Introducing..........2005-12-05

Although this album is only compiled from two albums, Portishead managed to release a live album Roseland NYC Live. With this being a live LP, it sounds strikingly similar to its original studio albums with little or no alterations from that. Because Portishead's sound and style is really dark, slow and deep with emotions there's nothing that involve getting the crowd involved, but they still seemed pleased with the performance. Beth Gibbons' vocals sound just as spectacular live as does on the studio albums!

5 out of 5 stars Nice Clean Sound.......2007-02-01

It's Lou Reed's best tunes, remastered and sounding good. A pretty good anthology from the New York Master.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Collection.......2005-05-25

I like this alot. A lot of classics and some lesser known stuff. Some live, some studio. A good mix. Someone else mentioned they preferred the studio Velvet version of "Heroin" and I have to agree. At least maybe have the live and the studio version both included. The insert write up was nice and pretty informative as well. Check this out if you are a Lou Reed or Velvet Underground fan or want a good starting point to see if you will like his/their other stuff.

5 out of 5 stars A mix of VU and solo cuts, how can it not be anything less.........2005-05-03

Considering how far across the spectrum Lou has gone over a 40 year period, the songs manage to interweave nicely, and is not a conventional "greatest hits" by any stretch to be called "Ultimate" or "Essential". But it's typical of Reed to confuse, confound, frustrate, and upset critics and fans...

He wrote these songs and sequenced them in order to a way that he was satisfied with listening to as an album in its own right versus a chronological "hits" package, pulled the masters and gave a short commentary of each song in the booklet (including revealing that the epic "Street Hassle" cut features an uncredited Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith on part of the song).

He chose to go with the edited "Sweet Jane" versus the found extended version or the 70s radio classic from "Rock and Roll Animal". The VU songs at times go with the original recordings, and others (I'll Be Your Mirror, White Light White Heat and Heroin) go with his solo versions in concert.

In the notes he felt a lot of the songs took years to catch on, and gave "Perfect Day" as an example, even though he prefers "Hangin' Around" as a favorite. He includes cuts from "Live In Italy" and "Take No Prisoners", although leaves hits like "I Love You Suzanne" off.

For an intro it's essential. But most people would be better off with the original CDs these came off of.

4 out of 5 stars A solid best-of.......2005-01-20

Despite the mastering Lou gave to some of those Velvet Underground tracks ( is it just me or did he put his vocals up higher into the mix ), I find this a rather solid best-of collection. It's a rather neat and tidy collection for those willing to buy this collection. Frankly I see this collection is better than the recent NYC Man with the added crap remix of Sattelite of Love which is here in it's original format ( and best ). I say this is better because I think you get a better feel for all the tracks and you get a more rounded idea of the personality that was put into the records. It's worth a try to see the many different levels/facets of Lou Reed's work on two compact discs. As the man himself says " try it."

4 out of 5 stars A collection by the man himself!.......2004-08-29

I have heard many of his albums including compilations. It is surprising some of the songs he chose but the collection works out well. I am glad this collection is up to date. I like "Magic and Loss", "ecstacy" and many velvet's classics. He takes pride in the sound quality in his music to improve the clarity of his songs. All in all a great overview of his work.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars IT'S CUBA!.......2007-01-10

It's definitly a great collection of the most pure and original "son" of Cuba. In spite the fact that it's made in NYC (what may bring up some old prejudice, specially from "latinos")you will feel yourself as if you were walking on the streets of Habana, partying at the Malencón, drinking the best ron and somking the great habanos cigars. In one word it's Cuba's spirit and character through music.

5 out of 5 stars durable, catchy, timeless.......2005-12-02

No it's not Fania. These guys try harder to push the envelope of Son in a different direction. Enduring performances that reveal increasing production skill. The editorial approach is chronological, so there's a progressive feeling to the anthology -- a direction. Well-recorded, well-mixed, well-chosen. Unique.

5 out of 5 stars Classic modern latin dance music from the 1970s.......2005-06-04

This swinging set of New York salsa/son cruises through the sweet, summery sounds of old-timers such as Chocolate Armenteros, Henry Fiol, Rey Roig, Roberto Torres and several less well-known (but no less thrilling) Cuban-American dance bands. It's great stuff, a collection that easily holds its own next to all the other salsa and boogaloo reissues out there these days. The liner notes are funny, though, with two parallel perspectives on the "salsa" vs. "son" nomenclature -- there's one strident argument that says the word "salsa" was all marketing/public relations BS, and another, mellower version that says, "Who cares? It's the same music, and it's all really good." I guess I slide into the second camp: when you've got stuff that sounds this sweet, why get all hung up on the name? This is a great collection, definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-05-11

First of all, don't pay any attention to the editorial that references the BVSC as being somehow even remotely related to this release. This is straight-up NYC Cuban Son. Not Salsa. Roberto Torres, founder of SAR Records explains a bit of what Jerry Masucci's role played in the term of "salsa" coming to be used by the masses to define virtually everything remotely Latin. There really is no "salsa." It's a b.s. term of merchandising. But, for this release...

Hermanos, you cannot get any finer outside of Fania. These are what the cats who wanted to venture outside of the Fania and Allegre record labels were laying down. If you wanted to get beyond the amazing double trombones of Colon and lofty coro of Lavoe/Betancourt/Cheo/etc, you found this. With soneros like Roberto Torres (who is a great friend/neighbor of mine in fact), trumpet legends like Chocolate Armenteros and the legendary Henry Fiol (if anyone remembers Saoco), you cannot go wrong here. That's just to name a few.

Get this, get this, get this. I cannot state that enough. Salud to, of all labels, Astralwerks for putting this out.

5 out of 5 stars Always the Greatest!!.......2007-05-14

This is a Levon Helm entry that I missed somewhere along the way. Levon is, without a doubt, one of the great VOICES and DRUMMERS in the history of Rock 'n Roll. His style and presentation of almost thirty years ago is as good as ever and he has not lost his touch, even to this date!!
This CD is a bargain at twice the price! A MUST have for any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Some Darn Good Music!.......2007-05-12

Let's face it, bands don't make music like this anymore. This is old time rock, blues, and R&B. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this is. The recording has top notch sound and performances. It's worth the price alone for Paul Buterfield's harp blowing. All star bands usually don't work out so well, but this one is definetly the exception.

3 out of 5 stars Good Night Irene.......2006-08-09

Bought the CD for Levon's recording of "Irene Goodnight" Best rendition ever.

5 out of 5 stars My toes are tapping! .......2006-05-22

I am listening to Levon Helm on MSNBC, Imus in the Morning.
This album just went into my shopping cart.
It is a must buy.
Can't wait until it arrives.
All my body cells keep saying, give me more of that music!
:-)

4 out of 5 stars Levon Helm and RCO AllStars Live at the Palladium NYC, NEw Years Eve 1977- Bringin' in a great 78........2006-05-15

It was with much anticipation that I purchased this disc. I have always loved the Band, and I think Levon had one of the greatest voices in "Rock and Blues" music. He makes you believe it when he sings it! He is also one of the all time best drummers in the genre. Any band that includes Levon Helm, Paul Butterfield, "Duck" Dunn, Dr. John, Howard Johnson, etc. is bound to be good.

I think this disc does a much better job than the original studio release (Levon Helm and the RCO AllStars) of allowing the talent of this band to shine through. The addition of some traditional blues tunes (Born in Chicago, Got My Mojo WOrkin, Goddnight Irene) and "Ophelia" from Levon's days in the Band add to the flavor of the original studio recording. The tunes from the original disc sound better in live setting, particularly "Milk Cow Boogie," "Blues so Bad" and "Sing, Sing Sing." Levon Helm and the RCO Allstars are a monster band live, yet they are able to play together as a cohesive unit. It is obvious that this band was about playing music together, leaving their egos at the door.

For some good-time music, buy this disc. Levon Helm Studios managed to pick an inaguaral "vault" release that packages a whole lot of soul into a small container. I can't wait to hear their next release!

3 out of 5 stars This is VERY important for people who want to buy this!!!.......2006-06-15

I wanted to get this CD basically because it had Sandstorm on it. I was very excited to see that not only did it have sandstorm on it but it also had other Dance songs. When I listened to the previews, the songs sounded awesome. When I listened to the preview for sandstorm, it sounded like the real thing. I was very excited that I bought it that minute. Then, after I anxiously waited for it to come in the mail for 5 days, I get it and immediatly listened to it. The first song I played was Sandstorm. It sounded great until I got to the middle of the song. I was really into it and dancing, then it gets to the quiet part and this DJ lady comes on and starts screamin, asking "How ya'll feelin tonight??" but then she says "it's hot in here!" and she starts talkin about how we're all one big family and that we should go to into the pool with her...Then she keeps sayin it for like a minute. It really annoyed me how she messed up the song...and my dancing. I thought this was the song by Darude, not Darude ft. DJ Lady who wants people in her pool. She also shouts through other songs too. Alright, if you want to get this CD because sandstorm is on it, then be ready to get in a pool. Also be ready for a lady to shout through your favorite song. But other than that, they're awesome songs to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2004-09-15

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding (from a classical music fan)!.......2004-07-21

I have to agree with many of the other reviewers. Though this cd is not perfect (i.e. recorded volume too loud & can distort some players)I believe it is as good as a cd of this type can be. I consider it THE definitive dance album.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD EVER!!.......2004-03-21

NY Underground 3 is the best cd for dance music. The music reminds u of the club, it is neverending and you cannot get enough of it. The first track I turn to you is one of the best songs on there. "Salsa dura" isn't simply a genre of music. It's a feeling, born of a certain people in a certain time. In this case--the sounds of dancehalls and hotel ballrooms of the Bronx, Spanish Harlem and Brooklyn in the 1970's. The lively Rough Guide to Salsa Dura NYC attempts to encapsulate that energy in an hour's worth of music. A heady task, but the collection does a good job of highlighting the premiere showmen of the genre. It's being kept alive today by all the classic and contemporary artists featured on the disc. Los Soneros Del Barrio, who formed in 1999, showcase tight grooves during "Babaila;" and bandleader Eddie Palmieri, whose career spans more than half a century, offers the sublime "Lo Que Traigo Es Sabroso II." Elsewhere, Jimmy Bosch's appropriately titled "El Embajador" ("The Ambassador") commands respect; and Joe Quijano & His Conjunto Cachana do right by the standard "I Get a Kick Out of You." Horns blare, voices wail and you can practically see the twirls across the dance floor. The only quibble is a common one in the genre: a lack of female voices. Thankfully, Las Estrellas Cobo's "Don Ramon" features the confident swagger of Yousie Barbara. --Joey Guerra

4 out of 5 stars DURAZNO SALSEANDO.......2007-06-24

This is a compilation of what I consider the dancing side of this style. Salsa Dura: the real sound that had been eclipsed by "salsa romántica" and "salsa erótica" since the '80s. ¿What`s "salsa romántica"?: romantic-pop-songs with a soft air of guaracha in the background, just to be used in TV novels. ¿And why "salsa erótica"?. ¿Because of the lyrics, meaning love and sex?. ¡¡¡Here is the erotic explossion, giles!!!. Here in the tasty rythm, in the piano riffs, in the powerful horns, in the soulful vocals and in the "descargas". Eddie Palmieri, ¡un capo!. Para gozar y bailar... ¡HARD SALSA for ever!

Ok! So you thought that salsa was dead and gone in NYC... but you're wrong. Salsa is alive and well. This compilation cd is a great example. This release, Rough Guide to Salsa Dura NYC, more than lends itself as proof solid that you don't have to go to France or Japan to enjoy salsa. All the musicians in the cd, with perhaps the exception of the ever travelling Eddie Palmieri, regularly play in NYC. The tracks are all well chosen and lend themselves well to the dance floor. If you are new to salsa you'll pleasantly surprised, if you're already musically baptized, jump in the waters once again. Recommended

5 out of 5 stars Great album with acoustic vibe.......2007-03-30

The album starts with the touching "Wait For Jane," peaks with the incredible "Cindy," then rides off into the sunset with "Andy Climb Down." The album has a gripping acoustic vibe that blends triumphantly with Stephen O'Reilly's vocals. A powerful performance without raucous instrumentals that is worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Best album from the band.......2007-01-10

This is by far the best album by Tammany Hall NYC. I could do a review of each track, but what's the point? Every review would be "awesome track".

If you've heard some of their other work, or more commonly, if you've heard some tammany on the tv show Scrubs, then this is definitely an album you want

5 out of 5 stars acoustic perfection.......2006-03-31

I first heard the song "Wait For Jane" when it was used as "Wait For You" in an HBO promo for their Sunday Night lineup back in 2002. I immediately had to know who sang that song. My research led me to Tammany Hall NYC. I ordered the CD right away since it was only available on their website at the time. I was not disappointed. This disc is solid from beginning to end.

"Always On Sunday" was another song that HBO used, I believe, and it is simply amazing. I can't say enough about these guys, how they are still flying under the radar is beyond me.

I give this CD 5 stars because of the "turd factor". The "turd factor" score here is 0. Which is good. A turd is a song that is so unlistenable that it is a must skip. You can enjoy this CD from beginning to end and throw the CD remote away and let it play.

My search for their music has definitely paid off, this CD is still in my regular rotation 4 years after buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Had given up on music until..........2003-03-22

Tammany Hall NYC is incredible. I own over 800 CDs and for the past 6 months haven't bought a single piece of music because nothing out there was of interest to me. Until, I heard this band on HBO. It took forever for me to figure out who they were. I bought their album immediately and it is all I listen to. They have instantly become one of my favorite bands. Like other reviewers have written, every song can stand alone, not one song sounds like the next. The music is unlike any I've ever heard before. I highly recommend this album if you're looking for something that you didn't believe was even out there.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-11-10

I absolutely LOVE this band. This is the kind of music that you not only hear but feel. To the individual who what wondering about what song was on the HBO commercial, it is called Waiting For You, which is a remake of Waiting For Jane. The entire song is the same except they replaced Jane with You in the title and lyrics. Either version is great. I only hope more people come to learn about this band.

Wax will always have its place of honor, but MIDI controllers, laptops and other forms of technical wizardry continue to inspire DJs throughout the land. In 2004, one of the world's most popular, Sasha, performed extended aural surgery on his Involver release, molding ten tracks into a softer, vaguely ambient, yet still lethally danceable mélange. But live, the studio tricks didn't translate with such panache. So he built his own tool, a box of circuits, knobs and processors he calls MAVEN, and took it for a test run on Fundacion. The result, ironically, will make you forget all about the fancy gadgetry, since that's not the side of the brain that involves motor function. More house-oriented and playful, this is Sasha's most overtly dance floor-oriented release since 1999's Ibiza. 17 tracks are thoroughly diced and sliced, served up hot with sides of electro ("Electromagnetic") and driving pop (the album-ending one-two punch of Goldfrapp and M83, for instance). Say what you will about DJs without turntables, but no matter how innovative the means, the end goal remains the same: delirious crowds and late-night bliss. In a world where music has broken up into tiny digital pieces, astute artists like Sasha are only adapting. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

2004 Grammy Award Nominee Sasha returns with the highly anticipated follow-up to the hottest and most critically acclaimed electronic music album of 2004: Involver. To be clear, the most exciting thing about this release is that this is not "Involver 2", the Involver concept is Sasha finding the space between artist, producer, and DJ. Fundacion on the other hand, is a whole new take on DJing. He's given up the turntables and CD players in exchange for a custom designed mixing setup that uses the Ableton "Live" software and a one of a kind controller that Sasha has dubbed "MAVEN" to create a never before heard kind of mixing.

To showcase this new technology and its sonic capablities, Sasha launched a bi-coastal residency (at New York's Crobar and Los Angeles's Avalon) with the closing party in New York being the launch party for the fruition of the entire endeavor: the Fundacion mix CD.

Fundacion will be the recorded version of what Sasha has been doing live at his residencies: effortless on-the-fly re-edits, mash ups, and flawless blends.

2 out of 5 stars Tepid, unpleasant, but beautifully mixed as only Sasha can.......2007-03-17

Ah well.
It had to happen sometime. The real tragedy of this mix is not the track selection which after ewan Pearson one, two, three is an absolute disaster by the way until the super pitcher mix of M83 moves in to save the day. It is not even the fact that this mix is a diffident, pallid version of the dark, moody, stunner that was Holden's Balance 005. The real tragedy is that this is Sasha at his technical pinnacle and with mixes like this and Avalon (which did have better tracks though) will be rexeperiencing the misunderstanding that has often shrouded his attempt at pushing the envelope. In the first case, airdrawndagger, he was completely underrated. In this case it has nothing to do with being ahead of the bell curve and what have you- It is simply a great mix that is boring and the paradoxical feeling it inspires in those familiar with Sasha's work will not be welcome. It is too complete... this tragedy. So complete, in fact that hints at Greek proportions. I am always open to new avenues but this mix is not new. The premise is not (Holden pulled this off brilliantly with his Fear of a silver planet compilation), and the execution relies to much on the talent of another (Holden again)

I really do wish that I could offer some more in depth analysis of this mix but that is part of the problem. It is like being under the influence; you realize it is almost not even worth the effort (which is a surprise since its Sasha). That is the problem wit this mix. It is not bad like an recent Oaky album or splendid like Fortier's Tranceamerica. It ranges from a mediocre to a boring listen after the first exhilarating twenty minutes.

Not recommended for those trying out Sasha for the first time. Not recommended at all. The only mix that I can think of that even comes to being this overrated is Zabiela's Utilities.

At least we have Nick Warren. Can't wait to hear Paris man. Since Reykjavik you've kept us perpetually on our toes man. Thank you.

3 out of 5 stars Rise of the Machine.......2006-11-25

Sasha has released a string of mixes since 2000. First the "long-waited" release of Airdrawndagger, next Grammy award-winning Involver, and the technological advanced Fundacion NYC. Sasha abandons his turntables and CDJs for a laptop, his mixer "the maven" and Ableton software to mix live. You either hate it or you love it. I enjoy it except it becomes somewhat dull towards the end. Fundacion NYC is electro-clash plus tech-edge house blended together smoothly. Ableton Live allows Sasha to edit on-the-fly, layer sounds, and create mash-ups. Throughout this mix, Sasha carries elements of one track into the next track creating some cool soundscapes and formulating the cd to sound like one continuous track. I thought the first half of his track selection was really good and the second half begin to die out. It loses its stamina. Would I buy this again? Yes I would. I admire Sasha for his ability to adapt with technological changes and progress artistically. I think his next release will be even better, this is just the beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Mix.......2006-08-08

This is such a mellow set it is almost unbeatable. If it wasn't for Involver to bust along with Talk Amongst Yourselves, this would be the best Sasha mix. This has a great remix of Little 15 by Depeche Mode, called Behind the Wheel. Two of the songs are the same, which I just noticed on the back of the cd case, replays Closer Musik- one, two, three...This is a slow mellow set that couldn't be redone, even by Sasha Live at Hollywood, which is another good mellow set by one of the best dj's. The best track in my opinion is Holden and Thompson - Come to Me.

5 out of 5 stars Unbeleivable, he broke the mold...again........2006-07-22

Sasha deserves an award for trying something brave and new and ignoring his fans complaints of less prog house. The mix showcases a range of genres, and it only grows and opens up beautifully. Sure, some moments are so out there we get lost, but that's the beauty of this mix. Sasha simply blends and layers and forgets what is labeled and goes for the sound. When things get techy, they do so smoothly, and overall an experience is created. This is the first step in a new direction, and so far everyone has followed in his tracks. So for those who say these tracks are dull, well I'm sure there's time to develope good taste sooner or later.

This CD goes from lightly gorgeuous to upbeat to brooding and dark, and on even further into straight up grimey electroclash. Sasha smirks and throws another blinder at us. Appreciate it, now.

4 out of 5 stars A change of pace, but not an unwelcome one.......2006-06-26

Sasha's FUNDACION mix was released in 2005 to showcase some of the sounds characteristic of his eponymous recent club night in New York City. As many have commented, it departs widely from his earlier work, but I found it quite satisfying.

First some background on your reviewer. I stopped listening to progressive dance music several years ago when, feeling a little tired of the club scene and looking for music more unpredictable and rich, I started listening to post-war classical music such as Boulez, Gubaidulina, Lindberg, and so forth. Only recently have I started catching up with the old dance scene, and see that various stylistic changes have occured which suggest that many DJs are growing older just like myself. The shift to electro suggests an interest in something more cerebral instead of youthful emotion, and now that I look back, the shift to progressive around 1999 can be seen in much the same light. If you are still feeling youthful enough to dig a sweaty, energetic dancefloor-oriented style, there are other DJs you're bound to like at the moment, and that probably explains the mixed reviews of the album. For those like me, however--and I can't imagine that I'm alone in my tastes--there's a real need for something radically new within the dance music scene.

So here Sasha presents us with a new series of tunes compiled entirely with his MAVEN computer system, at the heart of which is the Ableton Live music sequencer software. "Series" isn't quite an appropriate word, because this technology allows him to explore a "vertical" dimension of sound in addition to the "horizontal" flow of the mix. Several tracks can be heard at once with the system, and some tracks are rearranged. The general soundworld is that of electro and Swayzak-like tech house, but there are references to pop (especially toward the end) and allusions to the trance of the first NORTHERN EXPOSURE compilation. While there's a 4/4 beat and a bass drum and a hi-hat to make this fit into the house style, clearly considering the music with the mind is just as important as dancing. I'm not sure how much I can talk about individual portions of the music, since the layering of tracks with MAVEN, but especially fascinating moments are Swayzak's "Another Way (Richard Davies mix)", and the melange of sounds before Holden & Thompson's "Come To Me" and that track itself (in the form of two different remixes).

While this is all a pleasant surprise, FUNDACION does have a few weak points. MAVEN is a new technology, and Sasha clearly hasn't become entirely used to it yet. I can imagine a true comfort with it coming in future mixes. My second complaint concerns the packaging: there's not really any commentary here. It would have been nice to at least get some comments about the new technology here, as well as a graphical representation of the album's flow, showing what tracks are in the mix at any given minute. The CD is divided into 18 tracks, but trackpoints are fairly meaningless when so much is going on. But in spite of the album's imperfect nature, it shows that Sasha continues to push the envelope of dance music when some have given in to 1980s early-house nostalgia (Sander Kleinenberg, Danny Howells) or are just doing the same thing they've been doing without end for the last few years (Tiesto and that whole rotten trance bunch). I want to hear more of this MAVEN-inspired work, and am glad that I can come back to dance music without feeling like I've taken a step down from any other musical style.

It's either a blessing or a shame that the risks Sonic Youth take don't really matter any more. No longer the groundbreakers, or the train spotters they've played in the past, they are now a band like any other. They play for the sheer joy of sound, the kinetics of experience. There's no other reason left to do it--which must be incredibly liberating, and more than a little sad. NYC Ghosts & Flowers is marked by the same yearning calm that defined its predecessor, A Thousand Leaves. The hooks are conspicuous in their absence, as if to say the battle may be over, and we're better off having lost. The notable exception to this brilliant game of implication is "Nevermind (What Was It Anyway?)," an obvious indictment of the decade-defining "alt-rock" phenomenon SY partially inspired. It's only fitting that this track sounds lost amid an album far too wrapped in its own interior explorations to bother stating the obvious. Sure, you could say that NYC Ghosts & Flowers is the group's best record since Daydream Nation--what's a new Sonic Youth album without such an assessment?--but to do so would deprive them of their greatest achievement. No longer fashionable or influential, Sonic Youth persist in the strength of their own passions. They matter to themselves. To hell with everyone else. --Matt Hanks

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Ah, yes..........2006-07-11

Whatever the other reviewers said, especially those paid for thier opinions, I LIKE this album. I really LIKE this sound. I think the world needs more beat poetry, and that there are too many faux-beat poets publishing books and not enough faux-beat poets doing it like this. This is fun. Serious authors on NPR waste Fedral funding that's already in danger. We should have more songs with overlapping vocals, repetetive sounds and intimations of death. Jim O'Rourke should produce more bands. And to all you who said this album was painful or bad, I've taken off a star for you.

Now, is it a good album? Yes, certainly. However, bear in mind it is just that. It is a good album, not great, not the best, but one of my favorites.

1 out of 5 stars The sound of boredom..........2006-04-22

I found this at a thrift store. Figured "hey, a cheap Sonic Youth CD, I haven't heard them for awhile." Should have left it in the store. Uninspired minimalism, and sounds as if they are totally bored with the experience or are all suffering from Alzheimer's-- with the exception of "streamXsonic subway" which isn't bad, but not worth the price of the CD (even at the thrift store).

They've seen far better days, this is downright pathetic...

2 out of 5 stars I wish i could be nicer.........2006-01-27

This album does have one REALLY good song, which is the opening track, "FREE CITY RHYMES".. it's really excellent. and this album does have good lyrics. the song "Side2Side" is kind of interesting, and the title track is okay to listen to once. But mostly it's just a disc full of half-spoken poetry over uninspired music, which is disappointing. Like everyone said, thankfully MURRAY STREET and NURSE were a LOT better. but definitely check out FREE CITY RHYMES, it's actually good, i promise.

5 out of 5 stars Better then Some Worse then others.......2006-01-09

Sonic Youth has matured considerably since Washing Macine in 1995. A Thousand Leaves started where it had left of. But NYC Ghosts and Flowers is a sharp left turn from the previous two albums. I would describe it as thier Kid A or Velvet Underground record (3rd LP). Its not a masterpiece but a damn good album.
This album was doomed from the beginning due to the theft of thier gear in the Summer of '99. If they had not been stolen it would sound quite similar to EVOL in my opinion. Gems such as Free City Rhymes and Nevermind are some of the best in Sonic history. The climax with the self titled track builds and builds untill it collapses on its self into Lightning. Its simply beautiful.
Not a good introduction for that go with Goo or Daydream Nation but is good for hardened fans (this was the last sonic youth album i purchased.) Its also a good for fans of the Beats and Beat culture

5 out of 5 stars more avant garde!.......2005-07-18

sonic youth are by no means strangers to experimentation, & this is yet another one of their masterpieces. in fact, this is probably the most experimental thing they've done to date. but there are so many beautiful moments within these mere 8 songs. i definatly recommend this, but be sure to listen with an open mind.

& also, this was released in 2000, & became almost prophetic after the attacks on new york in 2001.

5 out of 5 stars The Birth of Louie!!!.......2003-09-30

This cd put Louie on the map.I remember getting this cd from my ex girlfriend as a surprise. She heard KTU (in NYC) advertise it and figured I would like it. I didn't know of Louie until I heard this cd and when I heard it I didn't stop playing it until 5 am that night. My ex got so mad she left my house because I wouldn't turn this cd off. The beats are incredible. I love the songs "Just Come Back to Me", "Give me Tonight" (this remix is off the hook!!!), and "Sanctuary". The two versions of "Relentless" add a nice touch to this cd as I am a big fan of techno with a good beat but no words. This is Louie's best album when it comes to electronic beats incorporated with little words. Definitely purchase this album to throw in to change the pace of a party and as an outlet from today's music.

3 out of 5 stars OK CD........2003-06-25

I would say I am satisfied. The CD didn't blow me away but it wasn't terrible either. I bought it solely for the second song "You Don't Even Know Me". I absolutely love that song. The other songs are OK, nothing to write home about. So it gets an average of three stars.

4 out of 5 stars When The Light Go Down In This CIty..........2000-10-12

...no one even notices. Get real, this is New York we're talking about: the place that practically invented "nightlife". Ever since Thomas Edison invented electric lights (at his lab in northern New Jersey), New Yorkers seemed bound and determined to make sure that no matter where the sun is, it always looks bright in the City.

They don't call Manhattan's underground dance clubs "hot spots" for nothing. this CD is the soundtrack to a typical night in NYC's hot dance scene, and it really sizzles. Every tune is a hot dance hit (familiar to Circuit-partiers and 'night-club' people, but probably new to most listeners).

Even though the the CD contains repeats from Jonah [it isn't irritating, but it did cost the CD a star in this review], it has such a great selection of dance club tunes that you still want to spin it again.

While some of the songs may be a little too fast or wild, and the energy level might exceed what the clubs in most cities are used to, remember: this one WAS mixed by a New Yorker in his native habitat.

4 out of 5 stars NYC UNDERGROUND.......2000-09-26

This CD is a good cd and all the songs on it are great, but a few of the songs, in my opinion, is over mixed. Throughout the CD it repeats the shhhh be quiet from Jonah (which is a great song) but it is a great CD and is the first CD i have bought in a while.
