Usually, groups wait until they've released at least three or four records before putting out a live album, but PNYC was too good an idea for Portishead to turn down. Recorded with a full orchestra on a cold, rainy day shortly after the release of their second record, Portishead, the project doubled as a live album and the soundtrack for a BBC documentary. In addition to being economical and perhaps lucrative, the disc demonstrates how sampled and sequenced music can be re-created in concert without losing any of the charm or dynamics of the original recordings. All it takes is a 22-piece string section, some horns, and a band whose tightness is exceeded only by its creativity. At times the performances on PNYC sound even more breathtaking and cinematic than Portishead's original recordings, as humming theremin, skittery scratching, and gliding strings mingle with stealthy guitar lines and sultry vocals. For Portishead, sour times seem like a distant memory. --Jon WiederhornAlbum Details

5 stars if not for the "Roads" clap-along.......2006-11-26
Unfortunately, the most beautiful song, "Roads," is marred by an enthusiastic audience clap-along. All throughout the album, you'll note that the audience is a surprisingly muted presence for a live album (muted in the mix phase, not in the raw audio, it sounds like). But they come out in cheerful force... to the aid of the most haunting and lonesome Portishead song I've ever heard. The incongruity doesn't recede with repeated listens, either. At least the band manages to drown these yahoos out during the peaks.
It makes me wonder if they had the audience on separate mikes and could release a version that doesn't include that part. Wishful thinking, though. If there was a chance that Portishead was still around and putting out more stuff, it wouldn't irk me so much. But this is all we got -- three albums, one of which is this live "greatest hits" recording. In other words, not much. (I don't count Glory Times because it's a remix album, and barely one at that.)

A mix of VU and solo cuts, how can it not be anything less.........2005-05-03
He wrote these songs and sequenced them in order to a way that he was satisfied with listening to as an album in its own right versus a chronological "hits" package, pulled the masters and gave a short commentary of each song in the booklet (including revealing that the epic "Street Hassle" cut features an uncredited Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith on part of the song).
He chose to go with the edited "Sweet Jane" versus the found extended version or the 70s radio classic from "Rock and Roll Animal". The VU songs at times go with the original recordings, and others (I'll Be Your Mirror, White Light White Heat and Heroin) go with his solo versions in concert.
In the notes he felt a lot of the songs took years to catch on, and gave "Perfect Day" as an example, even though he prefers "Hangin' Around" as a favorite. He includes cuts from "Live In Italy" and "Take No Prisoners", although leaves hits like "I Love You Suzanne" off.
For an intro it's essential. But most people would be better off with the original CDs these came off of.

Hermanos, you cannot get any finer outside of Fania. These are what the cats who wanted to venture outside of the Fania and Allegre record labels were laying down. If you wanted to get beyond the amazing double trombones of Colon and lofty coro of Lavoe/Betancourt/Cheo/etc, you found this. With soneros like Roberto Torres (who is a great friend/neighbor of mine in fact), trumpet legends like Chocolate Armenteros and the legendary Henry Fiol (if anyone remembers Saoco), you cannot go wrong here. That's just to name a few.
Get this, get this, get this. I cannot state that enough. Salud to, of all labels, Astralwerks for putting this out.

Levon Helm and RCO AllStars Live at the Palladium NYC, NEw Years Eve 1977- Bringin' in a great 78........2006-05-15
I think this disc does a much better job than the original studio release (Levon Helm and the RCO AllStars) of allowing the talent of this band to shine through. The addition of some traditional blues tunes (Born in Chicago, Got My Mojo WOrkin, Goddnight Irene) and "Ophelia" from Levon's days in the Band add to the flavor of the original studio recording. The tunes from the original disc sound better in live setting, particularly "Milk Cow Boogie," "Blues so Bad" and "Sing, Sing Sing." Levon Helm and the RCO Allstars are a monster band live, yet they are able to play together as a cohesive unit. It is obvious that this band was about playing music together, leaving their egos at the door.
For some good-time music, buy this disc. Levon Helm Studios managed to pick an inaguaral "vault" release that packages a whole lot of soul into a small container. I can't wait to hear their next release!

"Salsa dura" isn't simply a genre of music. It's a feeling, born of a certain people in a certain time. In this case--the sounds of dancehalls and hotel ballrooms of the Bronx, Spanish Harlem and Brooklyn in the 1970's. The lively Rough Guide to Salsa Dura NYC attempts to encapsulate that energy in an hour's worth of music. A heady task, but the collection does a good job of highlighting the premiere showmen of the genre. It's being kept alive today by all the classic and contemporary artists featured on the disc. Los Soneros Del Barrio, who formed in 1999, showcase tight grooves during "Babaila;" and bandleader Eddie Palmieri, whose career spans more than half a century, offers the sublime "Lo Que Traigo Es Sabroso II." Elsewhere, Jimmy Bosch's appropriately titled "El Embajador" ("The Ambassador") commands respect; and Joe Quijano & His Conjunto Cachana do right by the standard "I Get a Kick Out of You." Horns blare, voices wail and you can practically see the twirls across the dance floor. The only quibble is a common one in the genre: a lack of female voices. Thankfully, Las Estrellas Cobo's "Don Ramon" features the confident swagger of Yousie Barbara. --Joey GuerraAlbum Description
With its thrilling, fast paced energy and hot-blooded spirit, Salsa Dura NYC is music made for dancing. "Always On Sunday" was another song that HBO used, I believe, and it is simply amazing. I can't say enough about these guys, how they are still flying under the radar is beyond me.
I give this CD 5 stars because of the "turd factor". The "turd factor" score here is 0. Which is good. A turd is a song that is so unlistenable that it is a must skip. You can enjoy this CD from beginning to end and throw the CD remote away and let it play.

Wax will always have its place of honor, but MIDI controllers, laptops and other forms of technical wizardry continue to inspire DJs throughout the land. In 2004, one of the world's most popular, Sasha, performed extended aural surgery on his Involver release, molding ten tracks into a softer, vaguely ambient, yet still lethally danceable mélange. But live, the studio tricks didn't translate with such panache. So he built his own tool, a box of circuits, knobs and processors he calls MAVEN, and took it for a test run on Fundacion. The result, ironically, will make you forget all about the fancy gadgetry, since that's not the side of the brain that involves motor function. More house-oriented and playful, this is Sasha's most overtly dance floor-oriented release since 1999's Ibiza. 17 tracks are thoroughly diced and sliced, served up hot with sides of electro ("Electromagnetic") and driving pop (the album-ending one-two punch of Goldfrapp and M83, for instance). Say what you will about DJs without turntables, but no matter how innovative the means, the end goal remains the same: delirious crowds and late-night bliss. In a world where music has broken up into tiny digital pieces, astute artists like Sasha are only adapting. --Matthew CookeAlbum Description
2004 Grammy Award Nominee Sasha returns with the highly anticipated follow-up to the hottest and most critically acclaimed electronic music album of 2004: Involver. To be clear, the most exciting thing about this release is that this is not "Involver 2", the Involver concept is Sasha finding the space between artist, producer, and DJ. Fundacion on the other hand, is a whole new take on DJing. He's given up the turntables and CD players in exchange for a custom designed mixing setup that uses the Ableton "Live" software and a one of a kind controller that Sasha has dubbed "MAVEN" to create a never before heard kind of mixing. To showcase this new technology and its sonic capablities, Sasha launched a bi-coastal residency (at New York's Crobar and Los Angeles's Avalon) with the closing party in New York being the launch party for the fruition of the entire endeavor: the Fundacion mix CD.
Fundacion will be the recorded version of what Sasha has been doing live at his residencies: effortless on-the-fly re-edits, mash ups, and flawless blends.
Customer Reviews:
Tepid, unpleasant, but beautifully mixed as only Sasha can.......2007-03-17
It had to happen sometime. The real tragedy of this mix is not the track selection which after ewan Pearson one, two, three is an absolute disaster by the way until the super pitcher mix of M83 moves in to save the day. It is not even the fact that this mix is a diffident, pallid version of the dark, moody, stunner that was Holden's Balance 005. The real tragedy is that this is Sasha at his technical pinnacle and with mixes like this and Avalon (which did have better tracks though) will be rexeperiencing the misunderstanding that has often shrouded his attempt at pushing the envelope. In the first case, airdrawndagger, he was completely underrated. In this case it has nothing to do with being ahead of the bell curve and what have you- It is simply a great mix that is boring and the paradoxical feeling it inspires in those familiar with Sasha's work will not be welcome. It is too complete... this tragedy. So complete, in fact that hints at Greek proportions. I am always open to new avenues but this mix is not new. The premise is not (Holden pulled this off brilliantly with his Fear of a silver planet compilation), and the execution relies to much on the talent of another (Holden again)
I really do wish that I could offer some more in depth analysis of this mix but that is part of the problem. It is like being under the influence; you realize it is almost not even worth the effort (which is a surprise since its Sasha). That is the problem wit this mix. It is not bad like an recent Oaky album or splendid like Fortier's Tranceamerica. It ranges from a mediocre to a boring listen after the first exhilarating twenty minutes.
Not recommended for those trying out Sasha for the first time. Not recommended at all. The only mix that I can think of that even comes to being this overrated is Zabiela's Utilities.
At least we have Nick Warren. Can't wait to hear Paris man. Since Reykjavik you've kept us perpetually on our toes man. Thank you.

Unbeleivable, he broke the mold...again........2006-07-22
This CD goes from lightly gorgeuous to upbeat to brooding and dark, and on even further into straight up grimey electroclash. Sasha smirks and throws another blinder at us. Appreciate it, now.
A change of pace, but not an unwelcome one.......2006-06-26
First some background on your reviewer. I stopped listening to progressive dance music several years ago when, feeling a little tired of the club scene and looking for music more unpredictable and rich, I started listening to post-war classical music such as Boulez, Gubaidulina, Lindberg, and so forth. Only recently have I started catching up with the old dance scene, and see that various stylistic changes have occured which suggest that many DJs are growing older just like myself. The shift to electro suggests an interest in something more cerebral instead of youthful emotion, and now that I look back, the shift to progressive around 1999 can be seen in much the same light. If you are still feeling youthful enough to dig a sweaty, energetic dancefloor-oriented style, there are other DJs you're bound to like at the moment, and that probably explains the mixed reviews of the album. For those like me, however--and I can't imagine that I'm alone in my tastes--there's a real need for something radically new within the dance music scene.
So here Sasha presents us with a new series of tunes compiled entirely with his MAVEN computer system, at the heart of which is the Ableton Live music sequencer software. "Series" isn't quite an appropriate word, because this technology allows him to explore a "vertical" dimension of sound in addition to the "horizontal" flow of the mix. Several tracks can be heard at once with the system, and some tracks are rearranged. The general soundworld is that of electro and Swayzak-like tech house, but there are references to pop (especially toward the end) and allusions to the trance of the first NORTHERN EXPOSURE compilation. While there's a 4/4 beat and a bass drum and a hi-hat to make this fit into the house style, clearly considering the music with the mind is just as important as dancing. I'm not sure how much I can talk about individual portions of the music, since the layering of tracks with MAVEN, but especially fascinating moments are Swayzak's "Another Way (Richard Davies mix)", and the melange of sounds before Holden & Thompson's "Come To Me" and that track itself (in the form of two different remixes).
While this is all a pleasant surprise, FUNDACION does have a few weak points. MAVEN is a new technology, and Sasha clearly hasn't become entirely used to it yet. I can imagine a true comfort with it coming in future mixes. My second complaint concerns the packaging: there's not really any commentary here. It would have been nice to at least get some comments about the new technology here, as well as a graphical representation of the album's flow, showing what tracks are in the mix at any given minute. The CD is divided into 18 tracks, but trackpoints are fairly meaningless when so much is going on. But in spite of the album's imperfect nature, it shows that Sasha continues to push the envelope of dance music when some have given in to 1980s early-house nostalgia (Sander Kleinenberg, Danny Howells) or are just doing the same thing they've been doing without end for the last few years (Tiesto and that whole rotten trance bunch). I want to hear more of this MAVEN-inspired work, and am glad that I can come back to dance music without feeling like I've taken a step down from any other musical style.

It's either a blessing or a shame that the risks Sonic Youth take don't really matter any more. No longer the groundbreakers, or the train spotters they've played in the past, they are now a band like any other. They play for the sheer joy of sound, the kinetics of experience. There's no other reason left to do it--which must be incredibly liberating, and more than a little sad. NYC Ghosts & Flowers is marked by the same yearning calm that defined its predecessor, A Thousand Leaves. The hooks are conspicuous in their absence, as if to say the battle may be over, and we're better off having lost. The notable exception to this brilliant game of implication is "Nevermind (What Was It Anyway?)," an obvious indictment of the decade-defining "alt-rock" phenomenon SY partially inspired. It's only fitting that this track sounds lost amid an album far too wrapped in its own interior explorations to bother stating the obvious. Sure, you could say that NYC Ghosts & Flowers is the group's best record since Daydream Nation--what's a new Sonic Youth album without such an assessment?--but to do so would deprive them of their greatest achievement. No longer fashionable or influential, Sonic Youth persist in the strength of their own passions. They matter to themselves. To hell with everyone else. --Matt HanksCustomer Reviews:

This album was doomed from the beginning due to the theft of thier gear in the Summer of '99. If they had not been stolen it would sound quite similar to EVOL in my opinion. Gems such as Free City Rhymes and Nevermind are some of the best in Sonic history. The climax with the self titled track builds and builds untill it collapses on its self into Lightning. Its simply beautiful.
Not a good introduction for that go with Goo or Daydream Nation but is good for hardened fans (this was the last sonic youth album i purchased.) Its also a good for fans of the Beats and Beat culture

They don't call Manhattan's underground dance clubs "hot spots" for nothing. this CD is the soundtrack to a typical night in NYC's hot dance scene, and it really sizzles. Every tune is a hot dance hit (familiar to Circuit-partiers and 'night-club' people, but probably new to most listeners).
Even though the the CD contains repeats from Jonah [it isn't irritating, but it did cost the CD a star in this review], it has such a great selection of dance club tunes that you still want to spin it again.
While some of the songs may be a little too fast or wild, and the energy level might exceed what the clubs in most cities are used to, remember: this one WAS mixed by a New Yorker in his native habitat.
