5 out of 5 stars Great vocal virtuosity.......2005-04-07

This is a great recording, by two great artists. Carole Farley is the ideal singer for Ned Rorem's songs. She spell out every
word and every nuance, giving each song and every poem their full character. The songs are a revelation. I recommend this recording without hesitation.

3 out of 5 stars Confuzzled.......2004-01-03

While these song are GREAT...I cannot get over Carole Farley; her voice is so affected (kind of like a sprechstimme; overly dramatic...). I love the fact that Rorem himself is playing the piano, and as a singer, the catalogue of songs is good to have...but cant say I could ever manage getting over Farley's affectation. There are far superior recordings out there.

5 out of 5 stars An American Composer of Art Song.......2003-04-02

American popular song, whether standards, show tunes, jazz, blues, or rock, is one of our country's most visible artistic achievements. American classical (or Art) songs are much less known. Ned Rorem (b. 1923) is probably the greatest American composer in this unfamiliar medium. Rorem is sometimes dubbed the "American Schubert."

This disc features 32 of Ned Rorem's songs for voice and piano. Soprano Carole Farley is the accomplished singer, and Ned Rorem himself plays the piano. The disc is special because it features settings of the works of American poets. The CD begins with 9 settings of poems by the mid-twentieth century poet, Theodore Roethke, and concludes with settings of 5 poems by Walt Whitman. The disc also includes settings of poems by William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, and Paul Goodman, among others. Thus the disc combines in a special way American creative effort in poetry and in music.

Rorem's songs are declamatory in style. Typically, the voice line delivers the text of the poetry in a sort of chant. The relationship between the voice line and the piano is far from Schubertian. Generally, the piano takes a separate line and accentuates the voice by means of large chords or by runs or by other comments and punctuation on the voice. The texts are well set and the music is effective. There are some unusual harmonies with jazz and blues influences. Rorem's piano accompanyment on this disc gives the recording a sense of authenticity -- we get a good idea of how the composer wants his songs to be conveyed.

The disc includes excellent program notes and texts of all the songs. Naxos has received deservedly high praise for its "American Classics" series which makes much music written by Americans available on CD at a low price. This disc includes some lovely, little-known songs. It is an excellent introduction to the American art song and to the music of Ned Rorem.

3 out of 5 stars more German than Rorem.......2002-07-20

I've been a Rorem fan since hearing a highschool friend perform some of his work in her college recital. His startling, atonal songs were an instant revelation. For years there were few reliable CDs of his vocal work. A scandal considering his reputation rests more on his art songs and chamber music than on his orchestral pieces. This Naxos entry of a wide overview of his best songs is thus quite welcome, due largely to its availability, wide distribution and professional packaging (he's had some shoddy issues before with incorrect liner notes, etc.; the challenge of the low budget).

I can't call myself an unalloyed fan of soprano Carole Farley however. Her delivery here recalls the speak-singing style of German 12-tone composers (a specialty of hers), and can sound melodramatic, especially when she rushes the more delicate passages.

I prefer Rorem's softer, more melodious French side, the one that descends from Impressionism and is more warmly emotive. While Farley loses the shading of some of the more fragile songs, she is well-suited to the longer, more forceful pieces. I've heard many readings of "Early in the Morning" (one of Rorems most popular songs) by male and female vocalists, and its tale of wistful nostalgia is muted by Farley's direct approach. However, she nails "My Papa's Waltz," a fractured setting for a Roethke poem about a frightened child forced to dance with a drunken father. Here her acting skills come to the fore, and she perfectly captures the tipsy madness of the song. Rorem can be quite theatrical himself on occasion. She does almost as well with "See How they love me," a ballad with a regular pace that allows her assertive style to breathe.

At any rate it's great to hear these lovely songs in a recent (2000) recording, accompanied (rather emphatically, but perhaps he's matching his theatrical singer) by Rorem himself.

The similar Susan Graham album is more to my taste, but this is a more than competent bargain set.

4 out of 5 stars delightful art songs.......2002-01-02

rorem's songs are amazing, and naxos has done well
to group them by poet. the complete settings of roethke
are particularly compelling and edgey.

carole farley's voice is lovely, but her phrasing
and willingness to push her voice seems
a big departure from the styling of art songs i've
heard by poulenc and somers.

this takes some getting used to- at least 3 or 4 complete
listen-throughs in my case. her voice is almost jazzy,
kind of like early recordings by holly cole.

anyway, rorem accompanies her on piano so obviously
this reading fits with his intent; his playing is also delightful.

one small quibble- although there are 32 songs, the CD is
57 minutes- brief by naxos standards.

      5 out of 5 stars Rock Legends!.......2005-07-05

There is so much more to Nazareth than most people know. Every true music lover has a copy of their "Greatest Hits" CD at least. They have put out more than 20 albums over the years, and largely these are the unheard albums. Thus, unfortunately, many of their gems have been overlooked. No-one (and I mean no-one) can sing a ballad or a rock anthem the way Naz can. These guys rock hard! I have seen them in concert many times and they have more pzazz than so called rockers half their age. It's a shame that they are not more recognized for the rock legends they truly are. Every time I listen to this godly album I wonder why people like Brittany Spears and Justin Timberlake are more famous that these guys. I guess it just shows what is wrong with music these days.
Anyhow, do yourself a favour - pour a strong drink, light a candle and put on some tunes from these masters. They will remind you why you love Rock n' Roll.
      Thanks Boys, and Rock on!

      5 out of 5 stars Sensitive...Whats Wrong with Sensitive?.......2005-03-02

Most people when they think of this Scottish outfit, pretty much concur to the 'heavy stuff'-'Razamanazz', 'Miss Misery'
'Hair of the Dog' Etc. BUT never talk about their other means of music - mama's on the other side of you! This 15 'Power Ballad' collection covers a good chunk of their career, all the way from their first album - '(Country Girl') right on thru their last major release 1987's 'Cinema' which 'A Veteran's Song' is represented in this tastily produced package!
So why doesnt MAGICALLY MUSICAL aspect ever get mentioned? For one, a preconception of what bands like this ARE SUPPOSE TO BE LIKE ALL THE TIME - wrong again! Also, the consensus among the masses are that AEROSHIP 'created' AND 'invented' this kind of balladry, well again, are MOST MISTAKEN! Besides, Nazareth HAS ALWAYS been more of an eclectic unit than the above mentioned! It's a shame these songs have gotten ignored over the years, in retrospect, from the original albums that contained these sparkling gems! But now, most of them are here, together for the first, to explore AND to appreciate! (I HIGHLY DOUBT 'William' DAN McC. and the boys wouldve recorded these toons if they DIDNT appreciate other 'styles' of writing)
Favorites? There's too many to name! Though I would most definetly recommend 'Moonlight Eyes' (from 'Fool Circle'), 'Where Are You Now?' (from 'Sound Elixir')'Fallen Angel' (from 'Malice in Wonderland') and of course 'Love Leads to Madness ('2XS') - a little 4 minute slice of catchy pop heaven! One 'complaint', if there is one to be made, is that a second cd could have EASILY accompanied this 1 cd set or EVEN been part of an 'added bonus set!' In particular, 'Every Time It Rains' and 'Cover Your HEar' from 1991's 'No Jive', 'Little Part of You from 1979's 'Fool Circle' 'Fast Cars' from 1980's 'Malice in Wonderland' 'I Dont Want To Go On Without You' from 1976's 'Playin the Game, 'Nothing So Good' from 1999's 'Boogaloo' and of course the beautiful instrumental IVE heard no NAZARETH FAN ever talk about - 'The Rose In the Heather' (from 'Hair of the Dog') And it also wouldnt have hurt to include some of Dan McCafferty's solo renditions of
Neil Young's 'Cinnamin Girl' or the Glimmer Twins 'Out of Time'
or the old R&B chestnut, 'Stay With Me Baby' But IM very glad, someone had the GOOD SENSE to put together such a very very very underated collection of songs...NOW YOUR MESSIN WITH A SET OF GOOD/SOLID/SENSITIVE SONGS!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A rare introduction to two of Europe's finest avant players.......2003-12-14

Ernst Reijseger, German jazz bad boy cello maestro, co-founder of that avant weirdo group, Clusone Three, and Franco D'Andria, Italian iconoclast pianist, here team up for some mind-expanding duo offerings.

Not your everyday jazz experience, these outings should prove perfectly accessible to anyone familiar with European progressive jazz, yet not beyond the pale for enthusiasts looking for something a little out of the ordinary.

What sets these pieces apart is their listener-friendly eccentricity. Mildly deconstructionist yet retaining a fundamental commitment to and appreciation both of the melodic integrity and structural genius of these mostly standard pieces, these intrepretations straddle a middle ground between irony and devotion. And that's what makes them so compelling: one never knows when admiration will morph into avant expressionism.

By turns playful, witty, and (ir)reverant, this disc dances to its own unique sensibility. It may take several listen for the average jazz enthusiast to begin to appreciate the (admittedly) strange vibe going down here, but once accessed, I believe there are abundant rewards.

It has seldom left my player since I acquired it several weeks ago.

Love Hurts was released about six months before Jon B's Pleasures U Like CD. The CD is more of a greatest album hits compalation thrown in with album tracks. One of the finest songs ever recored by Jon , Time After Time is featured on the CD as for the singles that were released we have They Don't Know & Pretty Girl. The set is moderatly priced and effective for a romantic evening.

        4 out of 5 stars Love Hurts.......2005-09-05

Cher's first album of the 1990's followed on in simular format to the late 80's album "Heart of Stone". Although this time there are a few more ballads about relationships/love. "Save up all your tears" is one of the best on the album, it is quite an up-beat soft rock song that could have had more success. It has a very catchy/singalong chorus that doesnt bore after time. "Love Hurts" obviously a cover is done very well, it suits cher voice and works well as a soft rock power ballad". In my opinion i like it better than the original and i don't care what the critics say!! "Love & Understanding" has a kind of mixed vibe, it takes a while to see whether this is going to be either a ballad or more up-beat soft rock, but somehow doesn't really do either and stays between the two. "Fires of Eden" is a typical ballad from cher although not one of the best. "I'll never stop loving you" after however makes up for it and is a better ballad. Here in the uk "Shoop shoop" song was No.1 for 5 weeks in total, a little fun old style track which is great but doesn't quite fit with the rest of the album, it was a track from the cher film "mermaids" and after its success it was put on this album in the uk. "One small step" is an odd little track, which I still don't particulary like and has a guest male vocal, although i do not recognise him, would have been better without him and the weird backing track. "World without heros" sound like it could have been on the "it's a man's world" album, quite distinctive. Another favourite is "Could've been you" which is up-beat and catchy."When love calls your name" is very simular to "I'll never stop loving you" and so is "When lovers become strangers". "who are you gonna believe" is the last track and a good one to end on, after quite a few ballads it ends on a power rock track that has simular appeal to "save up all your tears". Over all a solid album, maybe too many ballads, a signal perhaps that it was at last time to change direction after 3 albums with geffen.

5 out of 5 stars "Love Hurts" by Cher .......2005-06-10

        -Love Hurts (1991)-

Cher is definately one of the best singers around today and certainly one of the greatest survivors in the music industry. In 1998, she released "Believe" and that was it - she was popular again. This song made her famous all over again. The album "Believe" was also a great effort, and one of Cher's best, but this also remains one of Cher's best album's. The album hit #1 in the UK and includes the singles "Love Hurts", "Save Up All Your Tears", "Love And Understanding", "It's In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)" and "Could've Been You". "It's In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)" and "Love And Understanding" both hit the Top 10 in the UK, however the other singles faired poorly on the Charts - none of the other three even hit the Top 20! All of the songs on this album had the ability to become singles, but only five got the chance...

        1. Save Up All Your Tears (10/10)
        2. Love Hurts (10/10)
        3. Love And Understanding (10/10)
        4. Fires Of Eden (10/10)
        5. I'll Never Stop Loving You (10/10)
        6. One Small Step (10/10)
        7. A World Without Heroes (10/10)
        8. Could've Been You (10/10)
        9. When Love Calls Your Name (10/10)
        10. When Lovers Become Strangers (10/10)
        11. Who You Gonna Believe (10/10)
        12. It's In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song) (10/10)
        Overall: 120/120

This is one of the very few album's I have where I'd give every song 10/10. All of the songs on this album are outstanding, and as I said above, they all had the opportunity to be released as singles. My favourite song on the album is "When Love Calls Your Name". "Save Up All Your Tears" is one of Cher's best singles. The single only hit #37 in the UK but remains one of my favourites. "Love Hurts" only hit #43 and although I like loads of songs on the album more than this one, it's still excellent and I still gave it 10/10. "Love And Understanding" hit #10 in the UK, and is a great song about needing more love and understanding in the world. "Could Have Been You" was another single from this album - it hit #31 in the UK, whereas "It's In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)" from the film MERMAIDS, was the lucky #1. The album tracks must not be missed either, especially "When Love Calls Your Name" as this song has a strong message and Cher's vocals are great!

        My top five:
        5. Who You Gonna Believe
        4. It's In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)
        3. Save Up All Your Tears
        2. Could've Been You
        1. When Love Calls Your Name

5 out of 5 stars Cher: Love Hurts (1991).......2005-05-11

In 1990, after releasing the 1989 album, HEART OF STONE, Cher starred in, yet, another film, where she played the wild mother of Winona Ryder & Christina Ricci in the film, MERMAIDS. For the theme song to MERMAIDS, Cher covered the original 1960s classic song, THE SHOOP SHOOP SONG (IT'S IN HIS KISS). The original song really sucked, but Cher gave us what is known to be the definitive version.

In 1991, Cher released her twentieth album entitled, LOVE HURTS. The 80s were over, but Cher's Rock sound was just beginning, so she continued to experiment with the sound for this album. The album isn't as great as CHER & HEART OF STONE, but the album ranks high with those two albums and will be another one of Cher's greatest musical achievments.

        SAVE UP ALL YOUR TEARS
The second single from the album. When I first heard this song, I immediately fell in love with it. This is a great rock song, with the sound of dance beats to go along with it, so if you are looking for a Cher song to dance to, this song is the right choice. I've some more Cher information; this song was actually Cher's personal choice for the first single from this album. But for some reason, "Love And Understanding" was chosen instead.

        LOVE HURTS
The third & final single from the album. This song is also the album's title track, and unfortunately to not chart too high. This really is a good song and I am disappointed to hear that it did not chard well. Critics with brains that do not function properly are all around us.

        LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING
The first single from the album. This song really is not too impressive for me, but it is a really good song. I wouldn't turn it off I heard it on the radio. I wouldn't turn it off if I'm listening to this entire album. But the song could have been better than this.

        FIRES OF EDEN
When someone mentions the name Eden, which, they would be referring to The Garden Of Eden, if I'm not mistaken, I usually enjoy the song very much. Well, it happened again, folks. This song is, without a doubt, a great song.

        I'LL NEVER STOP LOVING YOU
Seems as though the prase, Never Stop Loving You, is usually really popular for bands and solo acts around today. Cher, of course, had this incredible song. In 1999, Britney Spears had a song on her first album called, "I Will Still Love You", which was a duet between Britney & Don Phillip. In 1987, Michael Jackson had a duet with Siedah Garrett entitled, "I Just Can't Stop Loving You". And *NSYNC had a song in 2000 on their No Strings Attached album entitled, "That's When I'll Stop Loving You". This is a great song.

ONE SMALL STEP (Duet with Richard Page)
Sometimes taking One Small Step at a time can be very helpful in life. If you have some mental problems, than take One Small Step, one at a time, then you'll be feeling much better. This is a great song and I feel it can you help you in life.

        A WORLD WITHOUT HEROES
You know, I cannot see this world without heroes. I have a few heroes, myself. One is my late grandfather. The others are the American Troops who are fighting for this country. The third is actor Kiefer Sutherland. If I didn't have these heroes, where would I be? This is an amazing song to listen to over and over again.

        COULD'VE BEEN YOU
        Not bad.

        WHEN LOVE CALLS YOUR NAME
        Not bad.

        WHEN LOVERS BECOME STRANGERS
Most of the time, this song can happen to many people. You are in a relationship with a person. Unfortunately, the relationship goes sour and ends. Then, afterwards, the two become total strangers, acting as if one another never existed. I love this song.

        WHO YOU GONNA BELIEVE
        Not bad.

This album is one star less than that of I PARALYZE (1982), CHER (1987), & HEART OF STONE (1989), but it certainly does rank high with those three albums. So, get moving and buy a copy of this album for yourselves right now.

1 out of 5 stars Love hurts almost as much as this album.......2005-02-17

There's nothing more embarrassing than seeing a talented artist cling onto a dying trend, and by 1991 it seemed everyone but Cher knew the schlock rock sound she had paraded for four years was well and truly over. That's not to say her third Geffen couldn't have been a successful venture, but when the songs and production sound as bored as Cher looks on the album cover it's hard to find any silver lining.

The album starts well enough with two great Diane Warren tracks. 'Save Up All Your Tears' is a faster, more aggressive 'If I Could Turn Back Time' with some great vocals from Cher, and 'Love And Understanding' is one of her most underrated singles. Great lyric, awesome melody, and a cool accompaniment with some killer violins. Nestled between these gems is a song which epitomises the biggest problem with the album. 'Love Hurts' was a centrepiece on Cher's 1975 'Stars' LP, fusing plaintive lyrics with a twinkling acoustic accompaniment. The nineties rendering destroys any genuine emotion with its suffocating, and by this stage generic production.

It's all downhill from there. Mindnumbing rock ballads and bizarre covers (KISS' 'A World Without Heroes'?!) suck all the fun out of this album, and any semblance of a good song is usually ruined by a predictably dull chorus. 'Fires of Eden', 'One Small Step' and 'Could've Been You' are the best of the album tracks, but even that isn't saying much.

Cher and Geffen had clearly run out of creativity when they unleashed this monstrosity on undeserving record buyers in 1991. One star goes to the fantastic 'Save Up All Your Tears' and 'Love And Understanding', but the missing four should advise you to search them out on a compilation instead of this album.

        Product Description

Wild And Peaceful: Expanded Edition was supervised by Teena Marie and is the first of three of her original Motown albums to get the Select remastered and expanded treatment. Weve added three bonus tracks to the albums original classic six: the 12 instrumental flipside of Im A Sucker For Your Love; You Got The Love, a session outtake; and a stunning closer, Every Little Bit Hurts. Though another version of the latter, a cover of Brenda Holloways first Motown hit, was released on a 1994 Teena Marie hits collection, the artist pointedly told us... wait, theres a version with me and Rick. Find that. One listen youll know why she remembered it more than 25 years after it was recorded. Lady Ts tenure at Motown lasted four albums. She made a lasting mark, and her career continues to thrive more than two decades later.

5 out of 5 stars Classic debut from Lady T.......2006-02-14

This is the first release from what I would consider the greatest female r&b singer of the last 30 years. White or black fans can attest to Teena Marie being one of the most influential singers of our or any other time. Listen to Alicia Keys and you can see that and so much more.
This cd is from Hip-O-Select and is a expanded version of Teena's first Gordy issue lp Wild And Peaceful and is produced by Rick James and Art Stewart. This booklet is very informative in that you get a deeper background of who and what made this album . First of the fact that Motown would not allow Rick James to produce a full Diana Ross cd is nonsense to begin with. This Rick James album would have been the album that if done would have taken the place of Diana's The Boss album (which considering how amazing that is in the first place sort of makes sense) but still A RICK JAMES produced album still sounds amazing to me. And that is where Teena comes in. From having "I'm A Sucker For Your Love" turned down as a Ms. Ross record it now became her first Top 10 Black Single and started a career of over 27 years now.
The hits off this album were "I'm A Sucker For Your Love" number 8 Black and "Don't Look Back" which hit number 91 black. As with all of Teena's albums someone at her labels have NO clue as to what should be issued as singles. As great as "I'm A Sucker" is the B-Side is the even more amazing track "Deja Vu (I've Been Here Before)" and the b-side to "Don't Look Back" was the even better jazz track "I'm Gonna Have My Cake (And Eat It Too)" which is the only Teena written track on the lp. How could Motown not issue "I Can't Love Anymore" as a track. The No clue from labels in what to issue still continues from her new label Cash Money and the fact that they never issued the superior track "My Body's Hungry" off La Dona .
The full 6 track original album runs about 40 minutes long and is worth your time to own this cd. I originally had it solely as a cassette and finally an affordable cd is available. The BONUS tracks are the Instrumental version of "I'm A Sucker For Your Love" , "You Got The Love" a Rick James left over track that was supposed to be issued on a 1983 lp of the same name as then Teena had moved to Epic records. The final track is a early version of "Fire And Desire" in a cover of "Every Little Bit Hurts" with Teena as the main singer and Rick pleading for love on this version. There was an earlier version of this track on her 1994 Motown hits collection I Need Your Loving.
If the Grammy people had a clue to talent in 1979 the diversity of this 6 track original lp would have given her the Grammy for best new artist . This is hopefully the start of Universal putting out her original lps in remastered and expanded form. Lady T better be next!!! A++++ from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Debut By One Of The Most Important White Female Singers.......2005-12-22

This wonderful debut is packed full of talent and emotion. Thank God this has been remastered and now has 3 bonus tracks:
The 12" Instrumental of "I'm Just A Sucker For Your Love", a W & P session outtake called "You Got The Love" (which sounds very similiar to Rick James' "You & I"), and a second W & P session outtake called "Every Little Bits Hurts" (the old Brenda Holloway Motown hit). This version on this remastered cd has Rick James on the end, as a spoken outro. Be sure to get the cd- "I Need Your Lovin': The Best Of Teena Marie" because it has 2 tracks on it that every Teena fan will want for their collection: 1. A demo she recorded before meeting up with Rick James, called "Don't Turn Your Back On Me" (which was written by Teena herself), and 2. "Every Little Bit Hurts" this version does not have Rick James on the end talking. I just love this debut and now that a person doesn't have to spend up to $300 on ebay to get the original cd release, this makes it all worth waiting for. Her next remastered/expanded release will be "Lady T", and a third album of unreleased material- both coming in 2006, so wait for them because she would want you to. God Bless Miss Teena Marie, one of the most important white female singers in music history. This Diva has no competition, and dare I say it.... even Barbra Streisand can't outsing this Lil Vanilla Child.
