Knots don't jump out at you. You could listen to it once or twice and write it off as a sweet but sleepy singer-songwriter exercise. Listen closely, though, and you'll discover that a song like "Something of Myself," despite its Garth Brooks-like declaration "I wanna make something of myself," is really a wicked satire of all those dreamers too lazy to get off the couch. "Take It Easy" at first seems like a preachy song about old-fashioned values, but listen again and you'll find it's actually a sly satire on the impossibility of ever knowing anything about love. Not all 10 songs on the album contain such surprises; a handful are every bit as sentimental and slight as they first appear. Better live than this disk - seriously, please read.......2001-05-08

As an amateur guitarist, and someone who has seen Daryl Stuermer perform live more often than any of these other reviewers (I live in Milwaukee, Daryl's home town, and I've seen him perform live solo over 30 times in the last five years - and that dosen't even include his performances I've witnessed with Genesis or John Luc Ponty)I must disagree with the high marks given by the other reviewers on this album. I will agree that Daryl is an excellent guitarist; his ability to articulate a high-speed melody while driving his band during a solo is very impressive. Case in point: Recently I saw Jeff Beck perform in Milwaukee. His own performances of 'Lead Boots' and 'Freeway Jam', two songs Daryl has covered in live performances locally, were far less exciting, dramatic, and articulate than Daryl's covers, (which is kinda sad if you think about it).

My point is this: Daryl is best when he is performing LIVE. His solo albums (this one, Stepping Out, and Another Side of Genesis) all come across as sounding cold. They are technically efficient, but are stripped of both the power or emotion of their live performances. You may say that this is true of many guitarists, but in Daryl's case it is true to a fault. Do not swallow the other reviews on this site without considering this one as well. Don't get me wrong - I personally think Daryl is one of the best professional guitarists I've ever seen, but this album fails to showcase his true merits.

Daryl has a jazzy instrumental disk coming out later this year, again w/vocalist Amy Keyes. A live album of Midwest performances would be an even better idea. Just FYI. :-)

Live and Learn has something for everyone. A little Jazz, Fusion and Rock, rolled into one CD. Although Daryl has worked with many bands including Phil Collins and Genesis, he proves that he is capable of writing and producing equally great music. He plays guitar with the tenacity of a well oiled machine. Daryl and his guitar are one. Live and Learn will leave you wanting more...

I have been a fan of Daryl's own music since Steppin' Out was released on "that other label". It is the best instrumental album I've ever heard and remains so today in my library (Above and beyond Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson.) Talk about an album grabbing on to you and not letting go! Still just as exciting today as it was eight years ago when I first heard it.

On to Live and Learn.

As to be expected from Daryl, GREAT STUFF!!

I was only so-so on Live and Learn at first. I think I was expecting much more of the same as Steppin' Out, but the more I listened to it, the more I liked it. I've really come to enjoy it and listen to it rather frequently. Excellent for the drive home from work. Helps take my mind off the work day. I especially enjoy Morning Train, Live and Learn, American Fields, Highland Hip Hop, Yin Yan Boogie and Determined the best. The rest are good, but these stand out for me as the best on the album. I put it on and let it go from one end to the other with no complaints about any of it along the way. Always enjoy the sound of Daryl's electric guitar work that really propels his music. I haven't been a big fan of the nylon string guitar, but the music is so well written and so well played that I'm finding myself wondering why I didn't care for it. Take a bow Daryl! You've converted someone to your side of the fence! I enjoy the extremely crisp playing and the tonality is second to none on both guitars.

While Steppin' Out is still my favorite, Live and Learn is right up there! I am certainly looking forward to more in the future. Keep up the good work Daryl!

A Tour-de-Force! No longer JUST Phil Collins' guitarist!.......1999-02-24

Unless you're a music fan who checks the names of individual members of popular acts, you may not know who Daryl Stuermer is. He has recorded or toured with such acts as Phil Collins (for many years), Genesis, Jean-Luc Ponty (mid to late '70's; plays the tremendous acoustic guitar solo on "Renaissance", a classic from the "Aurora" album), Frida (of Abba fame; remember that guitar in "There's Something Going On"?), the Phil Collins duet with Raymond Bailey ("Easy Lover") and I'm sure many others. He also had a solo album in the early '90's (which I believe is now out of print) called "Steppin' Out". To be honest with you, despite some fine moments on that album, I didn't think he could match his best work with Jean-Luc Ponty, who's music as you may know can be very challenging.

I'm here to tell you, this guy is BACK!! This most recent release covers a lot of different styles (rock, jazz, new age, world music) with true virtuosity. Some of this might not appeal to fans of guitarists like Joe Satriani or Steve Vai (as these great guitarists tend to keep an edge throughout their recordings, with maybe a small number of mellow songs). Stuermer's songs are a bit more varied in terms of styles. He mixes them up pretty well, and the last four songs closing the CD leave a trail of fire and smoke behind as he absolutely RIPS through the final track "Determined".

Is every song a killer? No, the two vocal tracks just can't match the rest of the CD in terms of quality. Hey, I'm not a professional music critic but I know I always fast forward when those two vocal tracks come up. Stuermer sings on one of them and sounds OK (a little like Robbie Robertson). The song (the title track "Live and Learn") starts out OK, but ends up sounding a bit too smooth jazzy/ pop for my taste; you can be the judge here.

Do NOT let that stop you from buying this CD! Even if you only have a passing interest in the variety of styles Stuermer plays here, you will no doubt agree his name belongs right up there with the Satriani's, Vai's, Johnson's, Morse's and Beck's of the world. In summary, this album deserves a nomination in every guitar magazine poll for Best Overall Guitar Album of the Year. Buy it!

Wow! A guitar god with good writing chops? Blow me away!.......1998-12-03

I've been familiar with Daryl's work for years, even as far back as the Jean Luc Ponty days (circa 1978). He is such a standout player that it's surprising he hasn't broken through as a solo artist before now.

This album is far beyond my expectations. Again, I knew that Daryl could write (he did pen "Something Happened on the Way To Heaven" with Collins), but his depth and diversity would suggest someone with 20 albums out as opposed to just a couple.

I've been telling my Johnson/Vie/Satriani/Beck fan-friends to run (not walk) to their computer terminals to order this disc from amazon.com. It is truly a standout in my rather large (and guitar focused) CD collection.

Great comeback.......2007-04-13

Definitely a melodic rocker of an album. Jan Kuehnemund doesn't have to worry about the legacy of the band she founded, which was screwed up by the third album (which didn't include her).

Live and Learn starts out very strong with "Anyway" and the title track. "Anyway" has a little bit of Reb Beach's riff on "One Track Mind" from The Mob in it, which is cool sounding but I think that's coincidental. "Little Voice" will be familiar to anyone who got the live album. The songs range from solid to great in quality, without a bad one among them. While I think Tangerine might have had 3 or four adequate songs. Even the first two albums, while good, had one or two clunkers on each.

Jenna Sanz-Agero has a strong voice that has hints of Natalie Merchant in it. Though I think she sounds much more like Jewel on the live album for some reason. So if you ever were curious of how those two would sound with more rocking music, this is sort of an indication. Jenna doesn't have that sexiness in her voice that Janet Gardner had. Not good or bad, just an observation.

The drumming and bass work is good and fits the music very well. Lynn Louise Lowrey (I think) has a very sweet sounding tone to her voice in the background vocals. And then there's Jan, who sounds much improved in chops and songwriting. I really like the solo in "Don't Want It Anymore." This album is a great sign of things to come.

decently good.......2007-04-03

On first listen, the album is ok. But on second, third, and fourth, it takes on a new light and it starts to sound good. One thing about this album is that is that it has very good lyrics. Some of the best of this album are: It could be easy, Me and everyone I know, My life before today, go down, Better Part of me, Interested, and Coke and Smoke.
There are a few that I didn't like, but altogether it is a good album that will eventually grow on you.

Though second-guessing was extensive when I first jumped into Live and Learn, it soon become strikingly blatant that House of Fools is so subtly brilliant that it's a wonder this band hasn't made it further than they have. First impressions hardly grasp the finer points of the album, so I'm glad I came back to Fools's debut as quickly as I did. Hailing from North Carolina, this sextet is just one of those bands that really doesn't need much explanation. Rhythmically solid collectivity and well orchestrated country-influenced pop cadence flow through all fourteen tracks exceptionally, only stumbling on a few tracks here and there. It's no wonder they were confidently scooped up by Drive-Thru and have been on "Look Out For..." lists ever since. With the release of their incredible debut, Live and Learn, expect a scene of fools for House of Fools real soon.

With a couple songs still lingering on the debut that date back to the band's self-titled EP ("My Life Before Today", "Kiss the Haze"), we get a chance to sample both the old and the new. But the tracks we're still rocking from the EP hold their charm and are in fact some of the best songs on Live and Learn. "Kiss the Haze" is undeniably the highlight of the album's first half simply because its completely unique sound and best example of that collectivity I spoke of earlier. If it's not bassist Jeff Linn's irreplaceable arpeggio-based grooves fronting drummer Phil Bell's one-two beat, its Matt Bowers's organ-like keyboard tone backing vocalist Josh King's lively chorus lead.

And as I witness this perfect soundtrack to warm Southern days, so graciously peppered with hints of The Beatles and The Format, nothing so delightful could be led by any better than the former mentioned frontman. Josh King's freshly reserved vocals rarely miss a beat, and the rest of the band is staunch to propel King's vocal style to new heights. Lyrically, Drive-Thru aptly describes them as "open-hearted". Though standard, if not cliché, biography terminology, it really undermines King's lyrical range.

"Diving like a bird/I picked the blue out of your eyes/Hijack a plane to France/If we could watch the moon/Dance across the street into a bar/I would never leave/But I know I'll have to go sometime/You're hold on me is stronger than the alcohol/That is slowly killing me."

The second half of the album lacks the energy of the first seven songs, but more down-to-earth tracks such as "Better Part of Me" and "Coke and Smoke" makes up for the fact there are uncharacteristically slower-tempo, etc. songs finishing off the album. I mean, songs like "I Heard a Rumor" are just painful, considering the fantastic formula the band established previously. However, the title-track album closer, "Live and Learn", finishes the album off nicely with a pleasing piano based jive to jam-band outro.

Though I find myself less and less interested in the going-ons of Drive-Thru Records, House of Fools has the label once again part of my life with one of my favorite releases for 2007 thus far. Live and Learn is a feel-good rock album that experiments with engaging folk elements; evening out to a thoroughly good debut from quite a promising collective. Though a couple of songs included were previously released, there's no reason why one who even had a slight interest in the EP should pass up this beauty. Live and Learn is gorgeous.

This was a great album featuring songs Mac wrote himself. The title track to the album as well as other great songs such as "The Trouble With Diamonds," "Only Passing Through," "Weight of the World," and "All These Years" are well featured on this album. You might like it if you give it a chance.

SUBSTANCE OVER STYLE.......2004-08-16

I first began to listen to Mac Mcanally in the late 70's. I have follwed his career over four decades now. I can never undersand why somone of his talent and substance is not a mega star. When I compare Mac to Garth Brooks or Tim McGraw the latter are found definitely wanting. He may not wear a cowboy hat but he is one of the most talented singer-songwriters in the US.

A pop music masterpiece!.......2003-05-03

I am glad to finally have an opportunity to write about this CD. I have owned a copy almost since its release in '92 and it is one that I return to very often. The songs are simply superb! The melodies, the messages, the musicians' playing, the arrangements....everything makes this one of my favorite projects ever! "Just Passing Through" is such a powerful message and comment on our lives here. Mac is very spiritual in his songs. "Junk Cars"....who'd have thought of such a song besides Mac? "Socrates"...man, this tears me up! The story is fascinating and speaks volumes on common sense. "All These Years" is a very candid commentary on marriages that have grown apart. "Somewhere Nice Forever"...I can't figure out how you could perform this song and keep your eyes dry. The whole CD is just amazing! If you are fortunate enough to be able to acquire a copy of this, do not pass it up. Fabulous...simply fabulous.

Another fine album from a great songwriter........1998-06-02

I have been a fan of Mac's for twenty years. I first saw him in concert in 1978 performing with John Prine in Atlanta.

This is a fine album with one of Mac's signature songs, "All These Years".

I give it a relatively low score for I feel his earlier albums have better material and "feel" to them.

I recommend "The Simple Life", "Nothing But The Truth" and "No Problem Here" as albums to add to your collection.

Yes we DO know him!.......2003-03-23

The previous reviewer regrets Bobby's supposed lack of profile but,hey, we know the guy all the way out here in Australia so he cannot be too obscure! Let's get down to it. This CD is terrific. I could list every track but why bother? It's all killer stuff. Whether you like jazz or not you should buy this CD because not only is the playing great but the tunes are hummable. Bet that doesn't happen too often any more!In a world apparently gone mad where US forces are attacking Iraq with the assistance of Australian troops (why? for God's sake. Why?)I listen to this music and feel there is hope for humanity. Just but this CD and you'll feel it too.

It's far past time to give this great artist his due.......2002-10-05

Bobby Watson may be the unluckiest person in the history of jazz, a music littered with unlucky people. Watson, who came up with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, where he was musical director for a number of years, went on to record four or five great records for the Italian Red label, including one of the best all-time jazz recordings ever, Love Remains. Capitol took notice and signed his group, Horizon, which may have been the best post-bop unit in the history of jazz, to a multi-record contract. And though they produced some great records, esp. The Inventor, they never really hit it big. From there he linked up with Kokopelli, Herbie Mann's abortive attempt to make jazz accessible to the masses, and made the creditable but critically scorned Urban Renewal, which did nothing to advance his already sinking career. Then he made Quiet As It's Kept, back on Red, a really fine record, which promptly sunk like a stone.

That brings us to Live and Learn, which is classic Bobby Watson, again on a small, struggling label, Palmetto (which nevertheless has some very fine artists in its stable, such as Ben Allison, Andrew Hill, and Larry Goldings), again seemingly being ignored by public and critics alike. What does this poor man have to do to get heard, let along get the praise and respect he's due? It must be really discouraging to make breathtakingly outstanding album after breathtakingly outstanding album only to remain in obscurity.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is the finest Watson disc to date. It's got all his classic elements--that signature breathy yet biting alto tone; killer compositions that are at once sophisticated, accessible, and gorgeous; maybe his best band ever, especially Montez Coleman, someone I'm not familiar with, on drums (OK, I know it's heresy to say anyone could outdo Victor Lewis--a truly great drummer--on a Bobby Watson record, but I think this Coleman guy's done it) who brings a wealth of chops and taste to the proceedings, plus Gregg Skaff whose doubling, comping, and dialogic guitar playing is astounding; that lilting sadness that permeates everything.

Look, the bottom line is this. Bobby Watson is the best alto player alive. Forget Jackie McLean, forget Greg Osby, forget Tim Berne, forget Sonny Fortune, forget Arthur Blythe, forget Kenny Garret, forget Paquito D'Rivera, forget Richie Cole, forget Dave Binney, forget Marty Ehrlich, forget Donald Harrison, forget Antonio Hart--all good, but not good enough. Yes, Michael Moore (but he's mainly a clarinet player), Peter Epstein (a serious contender), George Cartwright (but he's better on tenor), and Mark Gross (although he's still a work in progress) are up there, but Bobby's still the man. And this is his best record in years. What are you waiting for?

I had a band in the early 90's and this is what i wanted it 2 sound like "New Jack Funky"! Joe Public(formely known as "Atension")was from buffalo n.y. and a really good band.I remember them on Arsenio Hall(Boy do I feel old)they were backing up those little guys Kriss Kross("Jump")and played of course "Live&Learn".It's funny how they changed their image from the D.O.A. album where their wearing tight jeans and silver tip cowboy boots too dreadlock style hair, jeans and combat boots but I guess it was a sighn of the times.This a must have if your into the New jack swing era of music( I think they produced Keith Sweat's song "Keep it Comin'".

Just Another New Jack Swing Ensemble.......2003-09-13

The credits list six different James Brown samples (typical late 80s/early 90s new jack swing) so there's plenty of hip-hop and new-jack influence here, but despite the prevailing name, Joe Public is a funk band who clearly likes their funk down and dirty (like Tony Toni Tone) which lifts the album. All three members show (especially on the huge hit "Live & Learn") that their all capable rappers but their real strengths are without a doubt singing, all three members contribute lead vocals at some point. Joe Public was just another New Jack swing ensemble to fall into a large list of one hit wonder new jack swing bands in the early 90s, but their 1992 self-titled debut did get them off to a good start among urban contemporary audiences.

It's a shame that Joe Public couldn't find success after Live and Learn- they had some excellent songs here. This is a good CD from start to finish and is highly recommended.

when i thought of this song it brought back some memories,so people don't realize theres a message in the music mainly on live and learn song HELLO!!stay in high school for the kids, don't drop out get that education,the more you know the more $ you get don't kill yourself , that song came out in late 1991 when i was 13 now i'm 25 i live hearing songs that brings back that original new jack swing beat,ok so the name "joe public is kinda nutty but i look for the messages the songs teach, it combines rapping and singing ,that a plus...and that great i don't care what anybody else says that's the bottom line!!

I agree with the 7-year old. It makes me feel bad for the members of Joe Public, because they will forever be haunted by the fact that they created this noise. Popular culture is disgusting when a band like this can get a record deal. I have to stop writing now because I fear that the Live and Learn song will get stuck in my head again.

Excellent ... but ..........2007-02-07

As a vintage G&S listener, I appreciated this collection but I think it would mostly appeal to the specialist-completeist. A newcomer to the genre would do well to get a full operetta DVD. (I prefer the OK BBC performances to the tarted up & modernised Australian ones.)

Old-comers probably already have all these tracks as part of their collection of vintage full operetta recordings.

But don't let my idiosynchratic views deter you if you really like G&S... but not to the extent of buying all the vintage full operetta versions.

A Barrington classic........1999-03-19

Barrington Levy creates a sound that just feels good to your ears. His lyrics take you through stories of struggle, life lessons, and playful romance. This is definitely a must have CD if you like chill reggae.

Ignore that review before mine the individual obviously has too much time on his hands, Nathan's work is innovative to the musician and strait foreward for the passive (or passionate) listener. five stars hands down

this is great. although i'm a big fan of the cubist-glam of shudder to think's 'pony express record', i can still appreciate what NL is doing here - a kind of soulful guitar-pop that no-one else is doing these days it seems. if you heard and loved STT's '50,000 bc', then this is similar to 'all eyes are different',or if heard 'i want someone badly' (from 'first love, last rites ';which was apparently the last recorded song performed by Jeff Buckley (written by NL)), you'll like this. lots.

If I would have written this review upon my first listen, it would've have come out much like most of the negative reviews that have been popping up around Nate's latest work. After giving Nate's new stuff some space to breathe, I'm addicted. Well-crafted and straight from the heart. What more can someone ask?
