In the mid 1980s, Kieran Kane made his name as half of the O'Kanes, an acoustic duo that achieved surprising mainstream success with acoustic music that was contemporary yet possessed undeniable echoes of the past--music that grows in stature as time passes. After their split, Kane continued his solo work, most notably in a partnership with songwriter Kevin Welch, fiddler Tammy Rogers, and a number of others in Dead Reckoning Records, an ensemble of complementary voices and talents with similarly traditional ties. This collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Fats Kaplin, a sequel to their 2004 release You Can't Save Everybody, features 11 numbers: nine originals, one traditional tune, and a blues cover. The vocals are loose and relaxed, the less-is-more acoustic accompaniment enhanced throughout by Kaplan's instrumental virtuosity. An eerie, gothic feel permeates both Welch's "Satan's Paradise" and the traditional title song. "Postcard from Mexico" has a raw, swampy ambience. This marvelous organic unity continues to the end with a rousing acoustic revival of the Little Walter blues standard "Mellow Down Easy." It's no surprise that the album's refreshingly devoid of the arty, self-important pretense that dogs many less experienced Americana singer-songwriters. These guys were doing it before "Americana" existed. --Rich Kienzle
Album Description
Musicians, songwriters and old friends: when Kieran Kane and Kevin Welch sit down together, the room is instantly engulfed in a softy glowing bonhomie. Not a raging, giddy friendship - something more insidious, a bit sinister. Deeper. It's a glow stoked by fast-flying sarcasm and the musical way Kieran and Kevin seamlessly complete one another's sentences. Lost John Dean finds these industry mavericks picking up where You Can't Save Everybody left off -- featuring an entire album of roots music gems from the pens of the original Godfathers of Americana. Joined once again by multi-instrumentalist Fats Kaplin who flavors the gumbo with just the right spices.

Circle Like A Crown.......2007-05-28
This is an excellent set from Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch & Fats Kaplin. Of the tracks on this set, the one that has me reach for the repeat button is "Postcards from Mexico." The call & response vocals between Kieran & Kevin are addictive, "Hands up in the night, Go to court, lose the fight, Got no consideration, guilty by association." "Mr. Bones" achieves a different sound with Fats Kaplin's oud on a full band arrangement, "Take the sun in one hand, child; Full moon in the other, Let the stars above our head circle like a crown." Some tracks slow the pace like the contemplative "Heaven Now" and the faith statement "I Can't Wait." "Lost John Dean" is an excellent Americana set from a group of people who obviously love playing together. Bravo!
Amazing music - excellent production - what a find!!.......2007-01-24
This music is the best I've come across since discovering Daniel Lanois way back when....true musicianship, EXCELLENT writing/arrangements, impossible to pigeon hole....these guys are the real deal, what a treat!
A Best For 06.......2006-12-27
I would call this Country Blues or Folk music. I give it my absolute recomendation. The musicianship is superb and the songwriting is very fine. Kiran Kane has a way with songs with loping country blues rythum. Kevin Welsh brings his compelling lyrics and stories. Fats Kaplin backs em up with the accordian. A must have for accoustic music fans!
Half An Ear.......2006-10-31
I brought this CD home from a local library's CD collection on pure speculation. I had never heard of these guys. Listening first with my hands in the kitchen sink, every song caught my attention and I am happy to report I had to wash the dishes again because this album wasn't made for multi-tasking.
Each song stands out, unique and individual. It's an album full of country blues "hits" that can each stand on it's own. That's awesome stuff, in this or any era of recorded music. Fans of Americana, country, blues, singer-songwriter buy this. Money well spent. Highly recommended.
Organic second album from Americana trio.......2006-05-20
The second studio album from this trio (following 2004's "You Can't Save Everybody") is derived more from the chemistry of their combined stage performances than their individual studio dates. Recorded live-to-tape (vocals included!), the sparse arrangements and driving rhythms echo the audience-enticing sounds they create at music festivals. The organic feel of the album derives from the trio's studio methods, forgoing charted, practiced arrangements for the jazz-like creation of talented musicians who've developed a shared. The trio of Oklahoma-born Welch and New York bred Kane and Kaplin, could loosely be categorized as Americana, with a rootsy country underpinning to their voices that's supported by a drumless, folk-styled presentation. The combination overwhelms you with the songs' power and the players' tasteful picking, rather than the volume or speed of the instrumentation. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

The best music I've found in the last ten years. A perfect match of vocal, musical and songwriting style.
Where have these guys been.....where have I been?.......2007-05-19
Thank you Amazon. This CD came up as a "recommended for you because...." selection and I'm glad it did. These guys play from the heart and play really well. Every cut is different but each conveys the same roots feel for life, love and loss. Went right out and bought "Lost John Kane".,...gotta make up for lost time.
Kieran Kane.......2006-11-10
I first saw Kieran Kane and Kevin Walsh playing a lunch time gig in Basement Discs store in Melbourne. Love them! This album epitomises the thoughtful, meaningful lyrics always associated with Kieran Kane. A highly recommended CD.
AS GOOD AS IT GETS.......2005-04-26
Nice rootsy album by 2 guys who have been making good music for years now. This CD is my favourite of their solos and combined output , also "live in Melbourne" is another great tile by them
On the porch.......2005-04-21
Think male version of Gillian Welch, then maybe add a little acoustic Mark Knopfler or JJ Cale and you've got a gist of this neat warm production. Or if you know the gentle country/cowboy art of Peter Rowan and Don Edwards, you're also in the right ballpark. No grandstanding here, just sincere original music making, with one catchy instrumental and eleven songs that tell stories, make comments about life's essentials and just let you relax. They're fine songs too - it would hard to say any one is better than the others.
These two Nashville guys have made their own solo or band albums (Kieran is ex-O'Kanes) but after a Live in Melbourne album this is their first studio album together. It represents an alternative Nashville, not the glitzy country music, but honest-to-goodness rural music in the great tradition of Woody Guthrie. Both guys play guitar and mandolin while Kieran plays banjo as well. Both also have really smooth voices. Fats Kaplin provides stylish minimalist accompaniment on accordion, banjo, guitar and fiddle.
The musicianship here is wonderful, with a togetherness that conjures up memories of "Brother Where Art Thou", especially in the opening title track. All are clearly at ease with each other and the music flows with great precision and plenty of soul.
An unpretentious gem that will grow on you with each listening.

With singers and songwriters this involving and accomplished, a voice and a guitar will more than do. As two of Nashville's least compromising artists, Kieran Kane and Kevin Welch have mastered what it takes to make less count for more. On Welch's "While I Was Loving You," Kane provides percussion by squeaking his strings; on Kane's "If I Could Be There," the two sing over thumped guitars; and on the O'Kanes classic "When We're Gone, Long Gone," they harmonize like long lost friends. On these last two nights of their first Australian tour, they swap new and familiar songs with a no-frills intensity, nearly every performance transcending previous incarnations. John Hiatt's "Train to Birmingham" will never sound truer than in Welch's deeply scarred reading, while Kane's "Town This Size" now sounds like a pure country classic waiting to happen. In letting some of their finest songs speak for themselves, Kane and Welch have made a record of Spartan grace and understated but clear conviction. --Roy Kasten

A record is for the people who couldn't be there........2000-09-01
That quote is from the, well, let's call them liner notes of this CD. It really fits this CD well, this quote, because you feel like you are there. Experiencing every song and every breath with these two fabulously talented singer-songwriters. From "Something 'Bout You" to "When We're Gone, Long Gone" and every song in between, this CD shows the talent of these two. Kevin's rendition of the John Hiatt song "Train to Birmingham" may well be my favorite on this disc but every song is delivered perfectly. This album is ideal for savvy Americana fans as well as fans of those "writers nights" experienced in a listening room in Nashville. It showcases not only their songwriting skills but also their ability to deliver a stunning and meaningful performance as an artist. This album is truly simple in some ways but terribly complex in others and to write a review of such an album is a diffcult feat.
An unbeatable combination of talents.......2000-08-25
I had the good fortune to be present on one of the nights this CD was being recorded. It was a mesmerising experience for me and one of the best live performances I have ever had the privilege to be present at.
I have had this CD since April this year (it was released first in Australia to coincide with a return visit from Kieran and Kevin) and I have hardly had it off the CD player since. It's one of those timeless and constantly engaging disks that just keep on making an impression.
Kieran and Kevin were wonderful to see live together and this CD displays their remarkable talents for writing exceptional songs and supporting those songs with tasteful instrumentality, as each of them accompanies the other turn about.
Acoustic music is very much my favourite kind of music, and Keiran and Kevin take it to new heights on this CD - the playing is quite exquisite.
It is really hard to choose favorite tracks on this CD as all the tracks have merit and are rendered with taste and (after all) are such good songs in themselves.
If you like good acoustic music with interesting songs, sung by voices that are individual and arresting, I think you would like this CD
Plain good stuff!.......2000-08-25
First off, I have to say I am much more familiar with Kevin Welch's material than I am Kieran Kane's, but suffice it to say they work very well together in this bare-bones live acoustic setting that took place in November 12th and 13th of last year (1999) in Australia. It's two singer/songwriters who display their hearts and souls to the listener. It all comes up trumps, because it's all played with NO pretension and NO gimmickry. It's two guys, their guitars and their songs. I particularly like Kevin's "Something About You", "Life Down Here On Earth", the amazing story-telling of "Some Kind Of Paradise" and the fantastic reading of John Hiatt's "Train To Birmingham." Among Kieran's, I like "Eight More Miles", "If I Could Be There", and, especially "When We're Gone, Long Gone."
I wish Kevin had played something from his most recent album, "Beneath My Wheels", but I can't complain too much. This is really good stuff, especially in an age of OVERproduction and studio wizardry it's VERY NICE to hear what's really most important anyway: it's what it always comes down to in the end: the SONGS!
......and well, these guys get it done right. So, enough's enough! What are you waiting for? Dig in everyone........
Fine, fine Mythologists.......2000-08-25
Kieran Kane and Kevin Welch are two of the finest -- well, "singer-songwriters" is much-too-ordinary a term for these two, so I'll have to borrow a phrase from Carter & Grammer, who claim to play "postmodern mythic American music" -- two of the finest mythologists making American music today.
They are two of the members of the renegade Dead Reckoners collective in Nashville who are dedicated to singing "country music" their way, which does not sound much like Music Row. On this CD, recorded live last autumn in Melbourne, each man takes a turn singing a song, then accompanying the other. None of the songs here are new to people who already know their repetiore, but then, I don't have to preach to the choir.
Kevin is the one with the Oklahoma accent (gen-u-ine). Here he sings "Something 'Bout You" and "While I Was Loving You", up-tempo love tunes that he wrote, and also John Hyatt's "Train To Birmingham" (see if you don't get goosebumps while listening). His own songs "Some Kind of Paradise" and "Wilson's Tracks" are story songs with "edge". I'm very up on Kevin Welch's music. He has the trinity of qualities that make for a lasting musical performer -- great voice, great guitar and GREAT songs.
Kieran, who was half of "The O'Kane's" band some years back, covers his own song (John Prine did the "famous" version) of "In A Town This Size", and does an impressive version of Hank Williams' "Ramblin' Man".
They like to joke that together they are a lot like Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin. That's not true. But it's funny.
The notable thing about this CD project is that while it sounds LIVE -- you hear Kevin clear his throat, for instance, and you hear them talk off-mic to the crowd -- it SOUNDS GREAT. No mud, no screeching, no boomyness.
I'm pretty sure if you buy this CD, you will want Welch & Kane's whole catalog. I know I do.

One of the Best from Kevin Welch.......2006-03-16
One of the best albums from Kevin Welch. 2 great songs in particular, "Millionaire" and "Queen of the Slipstream" are exceptional. Highly recommended.
Fresh approach to Americana.......2002-10-08
I just picked up Kevin Welch's new CD `Millionaire'. I particularly like the mellow title track, "Blanket of Snow", and his cover of Van Morrison's "Queen of the Slipstream". "Killing Myself" first caught my attention on the radio with its bluesy dobro work, and the muted trumpets are a nice rare touch on an Americana record. The album has a good mix of ballads and tight rockers. The Danes provide a powerful backing on the rockers "Choose To Believe", "I Can Sure Love You", and John Hadley's "Long Cold Train", and a gentle touch on tracks like "The Sun King and the Winter Moon" with it's prominent mandolin playing. The arrangements are very tasteful, while still cutting loose with some searing guitar work on "Choose To Believe" and the confident horn/guitar driven "I Can Sure Love You". I would highly recommend this to any fan of singer-songwriter and Americana genres.
Country that rocks.......2002-10-02
I just picked up the new Kevin Welch cd after seeing his video and it is fantastic. I love this alt-country scene that is coming out. It has a little bit of a blues edge mixed in with the roots of the alt country theme. So if you are a fan of this stuff go get his new music.
Kevin Welch is the best!.......2002-09-28
I just bought the new Kevin Welch cd, Millionaire, and it is outstanding! If you like any kind of alt-country type stuff, you have to get this cd. I'm a huge fan of Willie Nelson and Wilco, but this guy is just as good as them. Not only is it alt-country, but it has a real blues driven feel that is very catchy. This is definitely one for the collection and I encourage you, if you like this type of music, check it out! It's great!

Just a great album.......2005-10-24
Shame on Nashville for not pushing this guy's work. Kevin Welch is one of the best, most talented songwriter's in Nashville. An excellent, heartfelt cd. Great songs, great voice, great music.
Awesome, Country Rocking Debut.......2002-05-26
Arriving on Nashville's post-new-Traditionalist scene in the late 1980s, Oklahoman Kevin Welch wasted no time in carving out his own path in the post-Steve Earle Nashville singer/songwriter groove. Worth whatever it costs to get hold of, this personal, stunning effort makes no bones about balancing infectious melodies and Mike Henderson's powerful slide guitar, Steve Earle alumni Harry Stinson's booming drums, and melodic, multi-layered harmonies to create a hybrid of rocking country which poetically touches on heartland heartbreak ("Prayin' For Rain,") escapism ("True Love Never Dies" and "The Mother Road") and true love ("Till I See You Again.") All of this and most of what's left just flat out rocks. 3 of these tunes charted, and his intimate "Letter to Dustin" (written to his son) grabs hold like a vice. Unfortunately for Welch, folk-flavored country radio of 1991 was not ready for this hybrid and Reprise would pressure Welch to tone down his sound to appeal to radio, which, ironically, embraced this masterpiece and largely ignored Welch's later, more subtle efforts.
An essential for any music lover........1999-11-30
I originally had this title on cassette many years ago, let's just say I wore it out! Obtaining it again on CD will once again let me listen to the rich storytelling style and original music that made me fall in love with Kevin Welch's craft. My favorite track is "Mother Road" telling the story of old Route 66. You will not be sorry that you bought this title!

Bob Dylan ,Van Morrsion and Dwight Yoakam rolled into one!.......2005-03-23
I recently discovered Kevin Welch and Dead Reckoning CD's because I often shop at dollar stores. Apparently, much of the older DR catalog has been sold off to these mom and pop stores that put out a CD spinner display, largely of unknown music. KW's album cover caught my attention-he looked honest, organic and Americana. I snatched it off the rack, along with lable mates
Mike Henderson and the Bluebloods, Kieran Kane and Big House. This was the musical find of my lifetime!
Kevin Welch is a poor man's Bob Dylan. But unlike Dylan, Kevin Welch can sing, and can create word pictures with his unique phrasing. The songs can really catch you off guard. The combination of super skilled Dead Reckoner musicians, and captivating stories will make you wonder why this stuff didn't catch fire.
The reason of course is this is not mainstream pop. Country can't use it, it's not commercial enough. Folk is pretty much dead. This record label should do more to bring this to folks attention. Kevin Welch is a great American songwriter and musician and his cast of Dead Reckoners are equally talented. If you find this in a dollar store buy atleast 2-one for you and one for a music loving friend.
A quality of soul.......2001-01-09
It's a little daunting to try to describe Kevin Welch's music, but anything I can say that will lead you to go try him out is worth a shot. At the simplest, more direct level, he touches the soul. The songs are deep, wise, straightforward, and melodic in a strong country-blues-folk vein, but Kevin really is one of those rare artists who transcends his genre. I don't mean crossover pop, I mean real transcendence. You listen and ache and rejoice and wonder how this soul got so simple and true, so humble and so wise, and how he makes such beautiful music. Just give him a try--listen to a music sample online, do anything you can. If he touches your soul, buy everything you can find of his, because this guy is the real thing.
Bob Sylan meets Merle Haggard in Kevin Welch.......2000-01-23
Welch is simply an excellent songwriter, with a soulful songwriter's voice to match!
Wishing for more Kevin.......1999-12-14
"Life Down Here on Earth" is awesome. Kevin Welch knows how to reach inside your soul and pull out all the stops! Terrific CD. My song favorites from this CD: Pushing up Daisies, Troublesome Times, Wishing for You, and The Love I Have for You. His songs come deep from the heart. See him live with his band if you get the chance. I have seen him perform in Austin many times and hope to many more.
