5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful! The great balladeer returns!.......2005-06-29

How sweet it is to know that the outstanding quality of his previous album, "Higher Ground", was not just a fluke! Our favorite singer really has come back! This album rates as his best work since "I Want To Live". There's a comfortable flow here, from one great song to another.

The title track nas a mellowness reminiscent of "My Sweet Lady" and "This Old Guitar." There are two charming ballads of gratitude and romance, called "Thanks To You" and "The Gift You Are." Political commentary is also represented in fine form, with "Raven's Child" and "Stonehaven Sunset." "High, Wide & Handsome" is a playful little western number with some great dobro licks. But my favorite is a brilliantly soaring wildlife piece called "Eagles & Horses". As you listen, you get a panoramic vision of wide-open wilderness, where eagles race with horses in blissful abandon, filled with the exuberance of freedom.

John's peerless gift for celebrating the splendor of nature is as strong as ever! Add to that the touching romance, the social admonition, the stylish production work, and the splendid musicianship, and you have a truly beautiful album. Perfect for anytime, anywhere.

I have no comment because I cannot figure how to listen to the song requested.

5 out of 5 stars Strong compilation of Steve's MCA music.......2002-10-05

This compilation (one of only two British releases for Steve - the other was Burnin' the roadhouse down) was for many years the strongest compilation of his music anywhere. It now has a rival, the Ultimate Collection on Hip-O. That CD includes three RCA tracks and two Arista tracks, not included here, though they can be found on yet another compilation (Super hits, which only contains RCA and Arista tracks).

This CD does not have any of those (so it's a great companion to Super hits), but it has all sixteen of the MCA tracks to be found on Ultimate Collection, plus five others, including the title track.

The flower that shattered the stone was apparently popular with British line-dancers in the late nineties - it was interpreted by them as a tribute to Princess Diana. Hey alarm clock is an amusing song about having to get up in the morning and go to work. The other three wonderful tracks here but not on the Ultimate Collection are Heart trouble, Precious thing and L-O-V-E love.

Two ten-track volumes of MCA greatest hits are also available - this CD contains all the tracks from the first and all but two (There for awhile and The domino theory) from the second - if you want those, you'll have to buy that CD.

If you only want one hits collection by Steve, Ultimate Collection may be the one for you, but if you want two, go for this one and Super hits, containing all the Ultimate tracks between them plus ten others, without any duplication.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Denver... A Must Have CD.......2007-06-20

This is one of John Denver's best works ever. It should have received greater accolades and publicity than it did. EVERY song on this CD is memorable and worth listening to over and over.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2004-06-01

Next to "Different Directions," this is his best ever recording. The best ones are the title track, "Thanks to You" and "Postcard from Paris." Great instrumentation and vocals. John was a perfectionist when it came to sound, and it showed in his work. He cared deeply about the music and the people who were listening, much different than some groups nowadays, who don't care at all about the audience and are too busy looking in the mirror. John was truly special. His passion for the earth was real too, and he didn't let his detractors get the best of him in this arena either. We miss your talents and good will.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to find, but worth the search.......2004-03-27

I just happened to stumble upon this CD a few years ago in a used CD store. It was marked down to some ridiculously low price, and I picked it up. WOW!! I have been a John Denver fan since I was a kid, and this was definitely one of his best. The title song quickly became one of my favorites, and "Stonehaven Sunset"and "Raven's Child" are two others. They are some of the few "apocalyptic" songs Denver recorded: both talk about how the world is falling apart even as we speak, but both end on a note of hope. "Sunset" is especially powerful, with the words, "sweet justice is coming, with a fire in her eyes." "Postcard from Paris" will leave a lump in your throat, as you listen to a cry from someone traveling around the world without the person they love most, and find that all the wonderful things they see seem empty without their love by their side. "A Little Further North" is very remiscent of "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and "Rocky Mountain High": it paints a vivid image of a beautiful time and place, one that you wish could last forever. Another reason I have always loved Denver's music is because of the deep wisdom and insight present in his lyrics, and these songs are no exception. After listening to this CD for the first time, I never looked at the world in quite the same way again. It's a real tragedy that this incredibly wise man is no longer with us.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Lesser Known Collection from John Denver.......2003-05-08

Released in the early nineties, "The Flower That Shattered the Stone" features some of John Denver's best vocals and song writing ever, in my opinion. With a band that included three members of Elvis' old road crew (guitarist James Burton, bassist Jerry Scheff and pianist Glen D. Hardin), Denver shines on the strongest collection of songs he'd put out in years. The highlight is "Eagles and Horses", a Denver co-composition which features soaring vocals and melody as well as great lyrics (example: "My spirit will never be broken or caught, for the soul is a free-flying thing"). Also great is "A Little Further North", which always makes me want to go lie on a beach somewhere, plus the title song, and "Postcard from Paris", which was written by Oklahoma's own Jimmy Webb, who wrote "Wichita Lineman", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and so many of Glen Campbell's other great hits.
This is truly a fine album, and one that I have listened to many times since I bought it three years ago. I ordered mine then from a music store for around thirteen bucks. I can't believe the prices this collection is commanding now. Sixty nine dollars for a cassette?? Anyway, it is a great album, and one that deserves wider recognition.

5 out of 5 stars The Flower Lives On.......2000-11-30

This album is a must for any colletion, the songs are so brilliant, to pick one out, and describe would be impossible, as they are all John Denver at is best. The stone may be shattered with Johns death, But the flower will always live on.
