Bluegrass Boy

Editorial Reviews

Always a maverick in bluegrass circles, Rowan is an unassailable master of mandolin and guitar, and his high, wailing tenor has a rough, yodeling edge, owing much to old-time country singers like Jimmie Rodgers. Rowan's restlessness pulled him from bluegrass into rock & roll in the '60s and then to participate in the landmark Old and in the Way, as well as other progressive bluegrass outfits. This recent effort is a return to form and roots, a tribute to his early mentor Bill Monroe: It's his most consistent solo effort, a moment when his energy, commitment to original material, and arrangements--supported by leading lights Laurie Lewis, Del McCoury, and Richard Greene--all come together. --Roy Francis Kasten

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awful.......2007-02-04

Did not sound at all like the original, I have old 45rpms of these and believe me, do not waste your money if you know anything at all about Bobby Bare's singing. This CD sounded like it was recorded from some practice session of a Bobby Bare wantabe.

3 out of 5 stars It's Better Than No Bare at All, I Guess.......2004-10-23

I recall a pair of sisters, lovely girls without dates, playing "Shame on Me" over and over on the jukebox, but Mr. Bare has never emphasized his 1962 successes (including a much underrated "To Whom It May Concern"). He was playing a small country bar in Chicago just two years later when I saw him doing those songs, medley style, including "Dear Wastebasket" and "I Don't Believe I'll Fall in Love Today". Not long afterwards came "Detroit City" and he was in the big time. Pity that all of the songs here couldn't be the originals (like "To Whom it May Concern"). Go for the CD that has those originals if you want to be stirred by memories. This isn't it.

1 out of 5 stars Another Rerecording.......2003-02-20

Bobby's voice as with all others has lost the range he used to demonstrate. This is not the worst case of a "re-do" I have had the displeasure of hearing, but it still is far short of the original offerings of Bobby during the 60's. As a courtesy to all involved, Be aware these are not all of his original recordings. Buyer Beware!!

5 out of 5 stars Bare and Friends.......2000-04-08

Has anyone ever heard of this album? To my understanding, its available only on vinyl. The song in particular i'm looking for is "THE SINNER'S PRAYER". This was one of the best albums ever put out by this artist, and I can't find even the title anyplace. Its like it vanished from existence!

4 out of 5 stars straight up bluegrass.......2003-08-07

Its good but dont expect anything but bluegrass. Peter Rowan usually shakes things up a bit, whether its his debut self titled album (which has a southwestern feel and is pretty laid back) or his 1982 bluegrass album "Walls of Time" (in which he incorporates some great country and pop music ideas into original and trad songs) or that stupid (to me) reggae-billy bull he did later in his career. Just wanted to let you know that this album is a tradish sounding bluegrass album. Still, all the songs are penned by Rowan, so thats pretty cool.

5 out of 5 stars This gets 5 stars.......2002-09-05

for "Wild Geese Cry Again" alone (and the rest of the CD is pretty good, too):

I hear drumbeats on the watchtower
My long journey's at an end
Autumn leaves blow on the border
I hear wild geese cry again.

Wow. This is pure poetry/Bluegrass mastery from some old hands. Check out in particular the fiddle of Richard Greene.

5 out of 5 stars This is the real thing.......1999-06-01

I've never been what you call a blugrass fan (maby I'm still not) but this artist has gotten me hooked. Last week I was driving up route 71 in North Carolina - I'm from NJ - and while scanning the am stations i came across this great song "wild geese cry again" and i became hooked. Pulled over and wrote the title down, came here and searched. I am now one happy pup. This song is a classic. Buy you WILL enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Old Time Molsky.......2001-02-22

As a tyro fiddle player I can really appreciate Bruce Molsky's style. Wonderful old-timey fiddling, singing and backup. He doesn't play "competition" fiddle on every tune -- his tunes are in appropriate meter, and the ornamentation isn't overdone. If your are new to fiddling, Bruce's style will give you something to shoot for! Just terrific!

5 out of 5 stars Bruce Molsky is my favorite old-time fiddler!!!!.......1998-07-13

Welcome to the wonderfully sonorous, rhythmic world of Bruce Molsky! Good times reign supreme on this CD, where the fiddle playing, which originally drew me to Bruce, is marvelous and inspirational across the boards. Prepare to settle in for a delightful ride when he and his friends kick into high gear with "Lost Boy". There are so many fantastic tracks on this CD, it's hard to name all my favorites. On the gentle side, he and Carla bring warmth and sway to "Sail Away Ladies"; and "Masange Njia" is a welcome easy pleasure. You don't rest for long though, when he comes back with more high octane tunes to transport you with his driving fiddle power. In so many of these tunes his fiddle rings and keeps on ringing in your heart, mind and ear long after the tracks are done. Other highlights for me on this CD include a heart-pounding rendition of "Arkansas Traveler" and some great banjo with "Fortune" and "8th of January". Hard to imagine anyone who likes any kind of good fiddle music will be disappointed here. And if you like LOST BOY, you would love BIG HOEDOWN, my other all-time favorite CD.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Another disappointment.......2004-11-04

At first glimpse, this looks like a collector's dream: an economically priced collection of Webb Pierce's 4-Star, Pacemaker and early Decca sides. The 4-Star material has long been burdened with after-the-fact overdubs of additional instrumentation and vocal choruses, and one would hope that Proper would present it in its original unfettered monophonic glory. Sadly, eight of these tracks are still encumbered with the incongruous ersatz accompaniment that has made them unlistenable since the LP era: High Geared Daddy, New Panhandle Rag, Heebie Jeebie Blues, Sweetheart You Know I Love You So, I'm Happy You Hurt Me, English Sweetheart, Lucy Lee and Jilted Love.

The good news is that the other 20 tracks appear in their original form with good sound. And it's cheap, so one can justifiably buy it and just skip over the offending tracks. But the question remains: Will the original, undubbed versions of Webb Pierce's 4-Star recordings ever be reissued? It's time!

4 out of 5 stars Eight originals are what really make this a special project.......2004-10-12

Born in Round O, South Carolina, Jim Smoak grew up listening to his grandfather's banjo and tall tales, as well as tuning into Snuffy Jenkins' daily radio show. This album is strong on nostalgia as Jim remembers his childhood in the songs "Carolina Home," "Charleston Western Carostolina Railroad," "Carolina Boy," and "Cookin' in the Kitchen."

Before finishing high school, Jim declined a job on the WLS Barn Dance with the Prairie Ramblers. He finished school and took off on a post-graduation trip. He landed a job with the Cas Walker Show (with Carl and Pearl Butler), then joined Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys in 1952 (with Jimmy Martin and Charlie Cline). Lack of work after Bill Monroe's auto accident gave Jim Smoak the impetus to move to Jimmy Dickens' group, but he was laid off when the Musicians' Union scales went up in late 1953. Smoak went back to work with Monroe (this time with Jack Youngblood and Ed Mayfield).

After Youngblood returned to his native Louisiana, Jim took a job there with him. Then he played with Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith (replacing Don Reno). After a stint in the Army, Jim joined Hylo Brown and the Timberliners. That band alternated with Flatt and Scruggs on the Martha White TV show. When that group disbanded about 1960, Jim moved to his wife's home in Louisiana. The Folk-Lyric label recorded and released his first album called "Louisiana Bluegrass with the Louisiana Honeydrippers" (joining Smoak were J.C. Myers, V. J. Myers, Bucky Wood, and Lum York).

After moving to Alexandria, La. to be a commercial photographer, Smoak formed a trio with Harold and Betty Thom called The Cumberlands until late-1972. They recently reunited and released an album on the Copper Creek label. He had a successful banjo instruction book and cable TV show called "Let's Play the Banjo." Smoak published additional fine banjo instruction books in the 70s. Smoak recorded a 1979 solo album entitled "Moonshine Sonata" for the Blue River label. "Bayou Bluegrass" (including many of the 1961 Louisiana Honeydripper material) was released on the Arhoolie label in 2002. Smoak currently lives in Pekin, Indiana.

"Carolina Boy" teams up the legendary banjo-player and songwriter with a new bunch of Honeydrippers -- Michael Cleveland (fiddle), Brian Allen (guitar), Sonny Stephens (bass) and Johanna Smoak, Jeanie Prentice and Sonny Prentice (harmony vocals). Jim's lead vocals, while nothing spectacular, fit this music comfortably like an old shoe. Jim's a musician who's seen some pretty good days in his musical life, but we can't say his hinges creak. Just listen to his snappy renditions of "Goin' Back to Harlan" and the swingin' "Back Home to Indiana" and "Old Shanty Town." The eight originals are what really make this a special project. "Goodbye Jim" is a tribute to guitarist Jim McReynolds. "Pickin' in the Pokey" is a cute novelty number, while "Swing that Pretty Girl Around" is a hoedown that steals the show with its frailing banjo. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, just excellent.......2007-02-06

3 Reasons why this CD is awesome:

    1. The back cover blurb says "Hazleton is at home as both a church and theater organist." TRUE. Just when you're getting tired of the standard theater organ sound (overly vibrato, skating rink kind of shimmer) he throws in a piece like "The Lost Chord," which builds and builds and BUILDS, sounding like a monster church organ at the National Cathedral.

    2. I always thought it would be cool to have a piece where every possible organ sound effect gets used. "The Stripper" has it all! It starts out with the tambourine and and shake bells, moves into the opening melody on a grand piano - which is linked to this Wurlitzer's keyboard [!], and before you're done he's thrown every sound effect you can think of -- even a siren! And IT WORKS! Amazing!

    3. If you've ever been to an organ concert, you know half the fun is hearing the low frequency sonics of the really low pipes. The fidelity of this recording captures it! Turn it up and feel the rumble!

Really glad I got this. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars All i can say is "WOW!".......2002-09-12

I received my CD today. I have a THX system and the mighty organ kicks and kicks hard. You will feel like your at Radio City Music Hall even though this isn't the Music Halls organ except for the organ name. The stereo separation is great and if you have a subwoofer you'll get that great rumbling sound that you can only get from the mighty Wurlitzer but it isn't overpowering. I was really impressed with this CD and if your into theatre organ music,,,,this is the one to get. Trust me,,,,you won't be disappointed. IT KICKS.

5 out of 5 stars Shawn Camp CD "Live at the Station Inn".......2007-01-09

This has become one of my all time favorites. I love the variety of songs and Camp's outstanding voice. He is at the top of my great bluegrass artist list.

5 out of 5 stars Angel on the Mesa.......2005-07-03

Shawn Camp has written #1 tunes for Garth Brooks (Two Pina Coladas) & Brooks & Dunn (How Long Gone). On his latest set on John Prine's Oh Boy Records, his bluegrass is fresh and the band sparkles. A particular favorite is "Magnolia Wind" that sounds like an excellent companion piece to Gram Parsons' "Hickory Wind." "The Guilt Was Gone" is a strong country toe tapper about a man giving into desire that was co-written with Guy Clark with Stuart Duncan's fiddle sparkling like a firecracker on the 4th of July. "Travelin' Teardrop Blues" co-written with Jim Lauderdale boasts some fine banjo picking by Dave Talbot on an excellent song, "Angel wakes up on the mesa, In the mirror makes her face up with the paint of some red warrior in her eyes; In the dark behind the curtain on a bed of lust I loved her; While she slept, I left a tear to say goodbye." I've got to admit that being the squeamish type, "Soldiers Joy 1864" about a guy losing his leg leaves me a bit lightheaded. "Redbird" is a delightful bluegrass track by Camp & Lauderdale. The set concludes with the hoe-down "My Love Will Not Change," "The seasons come & the seasons go & the reasons you left, I guess I'll never know; There will be others, yes, I know it's true, but they won't do you like I did for you." "Live At the Station Inn" is a great set with excellent acoustics from this live performance. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars extraordinary singer, solid picker, and creative songwriter .......2004-11-02

Time - 46:22 -- Shawn Camp is an extraordinary singer, solid picker, and creative songwriter whose guitar and vocals are on the leading edge of what some might consider an urban/folk dimension of current bluegrass. About forty years earlier, back in the mid-60s, it was guys like Peter Rowan, Lamar Grier, Richard Greene and Gene Lowinger who showed another side of bluegrass. Some called them citybillies. While Shawn Camp is from Arkansas, he's following in the footsteps of others who have infused bluegrass with folk, new acoustic, blues, honky tonk or even roots rock inspirations. Respect for Shawn and his songs have led to covers of them by Garth Brooks, Brooks & Dunn, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Patty Loveless, Randy Travis, and many others.

Live at the Station Inn is an exciting journey through twelve songs co-written by Camp. Many are sung solo without vocal harmonies, but fiddler Stuart Duncan and mandolinist Mike Compton add vocal parts on a few of them like "Forever Ain't No Trouble Now." On the introduction to "Travelin' Teardrop Blues," you'll hear the murmurs of the audience talking in the background. On the last measure of "Redbird," you'll hear Dave Talbot's banjo string bust. A few cuts (like "Dear Departed") don't have the mandolin quite loud enough in the mix. All in all, these idiosyncracies that come with a live recording just add to the magic of the moment. "Sis Draper" and "My Love will not Change" receive particularly enthusiastic responses from the audience. Other musicians assisting at the two Nashville shows from which the album's tracks were captured include Dave Roe (bass), Buck Baxter (high strung guitar), Scott Vestal (banjo), and Dennis Crouch (bass).

Shawn Camp is a regular at the Station Inn, a small club where he hung out nearly every night to pick or listen during his first eight years in Nashville. There he made many connections and launched a successful career in music. Camp still has a deep appreciation for traditional music, but he's also appealing to a wide, young demographic audience. Three cuts co-authored with Guy Clark are based on old fiddle tunes. "Sis Draper," tells the story of a female Arkansawyer with her fiddle and special touch on the instrument. "Magnolia Wind" is a lyrical and heartfelt love song for a fiddler, while "Soldier's Joy 1864," is a tale of being shot and calling for some of that soldier's joy for comfort. Camp doesn't race through his songs, but rather he soulfully renders evocative numbers like "The Guilt Was Gone" (written with Paul Craft) and one of his favorites, "The Tune of a Twenty Dollar Bill" (written with Mark D. Sanders). I wish that this live set would've included another of Shawn's own personal favorites, "The Grandpa That I Know."

Shawn Camp once said that he always has songs in his head, whether he's awake or asleep. Because of his constant engagement in writing songs, he's been called an "organic" songwriter. Camp is also not afraid to take a few risks with his music, an important lesson that he learned from legendary music producer Cowboy Jack Clement. Future projects from Camp may surprise us because he seems equally comfortable with bluegrass or electric music. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Good if not great stuff by Ricky Skaggs He is one of music's most underrated talents, and that's a shame A lot of standout songs here particularly the title song and Patiently Waiting Ricky has long since moved on to bluegrass but his 80's country albums are the best
