Album Description

Magic Slim is the greatest living proponent of the intense, electrified, Mississippi-to-Chicago blues style that spawned much of the music played by modern blues artists and rockers alike. Its no wonder that Magic Slim & The Teardrops, considered by many to be "the last real Chicago blues band," have become one of the busiest and best-loved touring units today. This live recording, taped in 2005 at the Sierra Nevada Brewery, showcases Slim's slashing, vibrato-drenched guitar, mountain-moving vocals and presents an authentic South Side back-alley excursion into the true blues. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IS ALSO BEING RELEASED AS A DVD - LOOK IN AMAZON'S DVD STORE....The compact disc program is not the same as concurrent DVD release.

5 out of 5 stars We've been losing so many of our great bluesmen........2006-03-14

In the tradition of great bluesmen such as Freddy King and Albert Collins, Morris "Magic Slim" Holt plays a music that ties together two worlds, with a physical style of playing that technically resembles acoustic soloists, but an electric sound that rocks as hard as anyone ever has. Don't let a chance go by to see Magic Slim.

5 out of 5 stars Slim's Magic keeps on keepin on....whooooo!.......2005-12-11

I was just listening to Buddy Guy's new Cd but halfway through I had to switch over and put this one on again. Magic Slim seems to keep getting better. This is easily one of the most energized live CD's I've heard in recent memory. The band is clearly up to the task supporting the superb guitar and trademark powerhouse vocals of Magic Slim. You positively won't be able to sit still listening to this. I had to immediately order up the DVD of this performance. I've been to one of Magic Slim's shows at B.L.U.E.S. in Chicago and his perfroming is just totally captivating. With this recording he's never sounded so good and inspired vocally and playing the Jazzmaster. This, folks, is Chicago Blues at it's absolute best.

5 out of 5 stars The Best It Can Be Without Slim Actually In The Room.......2005-09-23

If Magic Slim & The Teardrops AREN'T the best pure Chicago Blues band around somebody's going to have to prove it to me. Though a live album will never match what Slim & his band can do on stage, this album proves to be a great way to get pumped for one of his shows or a way to cure your jonesing between shows. Played loud enough, you can nearly feel the presence of the man coming through the speakers along with his guitar. After listening to this album a couple hundred times, I highly recommend taking it to your local blues club and forcing the owner to book Slim to come to your town. Get some copies of Black Tornado, Grand Slam & Snakebite if the owner needs some extra convincing. I've seen Slim and various versions of the Teardrops going back to 1991 in Chicago and most recently in 2004 in Tennessee and have always been absolutely blown away by what this band can do on stage. If you've never seen Slim & The Teardrops live, you can start buy picking up a copy of this album to prepare you for the experience of seeing them either in your town, on the road, or maybe it's time to start considering a trip to Chicago.

5 out of 5 stars Magic Slim - Anything can happen........2005-09-20

I've been waiting 3 years for a new release from Magic Slim and the Teardrops and was delighted when I saw this one newly listed on Amazon.com. It is a live concert performance of Slim and the Teardrops earlier this year and Slim's still got it! I personally have always loved the way he plays his Fender Jazz Master Guitar! Slim and his band have been awesome for many years even with the line-up changes over the years!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Black Tornado, my review from Barcelona.......2007-06-07

Don't know how to explain how great are both this record and MAGIC SLIM, but I'll try. Perhaps two themes don't play in the same league as the others (the one which gives its name to the album, "Black Tornado", and the Blues-rock "It's alright" even though also are good) but the rest is absolutely exceptional, in his habitual line, with some infectious and unforgettable Blues that you're going to listen endlessly, like a cover of Muddy Waters' "Still a Fool", or "I Can't Trust My Woman", or the righteously houserockin' "Magic Boogie", or the magnificent slow Blues "Crazy Woman" and so on. In general all the CD from first to last cut, is intense, marvellous, Blues without second thoughts, without breathless, powerful, magnificent. Slim's singing is extraordinary and powerful, and his guitar play is as exceptional as ever, with clarity, incredible, one of the best, really sensational. The Teardrops, commanded by his brother Nick Holt are also very good with high instrumental level. Slim's style is very concise and in some moments very similar to one of his mentors Freddie King. In a few words, it's an essential record and it should be in the collection of all blues fans. I give it 5 stars. Finally I want to add that most of the records of his large discography are really great.

5 out of 5 stars A work of great artistry.......2006-10-25

Whenever I think that the blue flame is flickering low, I put on "Black Tornado." On this CD, Magic Slim--who has been turning out great work for years--turned out a CD that exemplifies the best of electrified but down-home blues. From first to last cut, this CD is intense, powerful, and always surprisingly musical. Slim's vocals are excellent, and his guitar work shows that the Fender Jazzmaster makes a great blues instrument. The guitar tone in particular is noteworthy for its combined power and clarity. Overall, the CD has that same quality of absolute, unadulterated authenticity that marks the great Chess, Robinson, and Bihari recordings of the 1950s. It should be in the collection of all blues fans.

5 out of 5 stars Magic Slim Live and up close = fantastic.......2005-04-11

To be quite honest I don't actually own this CD, but I will recommend it anyway. I saw Magic Slim live just a few weeks ago, he was playing down in Greenwich Village (New York City, for all you out of towners) and was fabulous. I was thoroughly impressed. His style is very tight, similar to Freddie King's later style. It's loud, sharp, and powerful. He certainly is an excellent guitarist. He has a beautiful voice that just bellowed throughout that little blues club and I imagine he sounds great on this album. The Teardrops are also very good- I had a chance to talk to the second guitarist, I think his name is John Mcdonald, and besides being a really chill guy was an excellent guitarist. This CD will be my next purchase, and it should be your's, too.

5 out of 5 stars Black Tornado.......2003-02-22

what can i say See my Review for Blue Magic this not Blues for the Girl Friend

5 out of 5 stars Big, fat blues.......2000-06-08

He may not be "slim" any longer, but "magic" is woven all through Morris Holt's sensational "Black Tornado." This not only is Magic Slim's best album, it is one of the top 10 (top 5?) blues discs of the 1990s. Like the tornado of the title, Magic Slim's rough and tumble blues could blow a 2x4 through a brick wall; he could tear your heart out and show it to you while it's still beating. (OK, I'm getting carried away). "Black Tornado" is slow to get going, but the third cut, a cover of Muddy Waters' "Still a Fool" is sensational, and there's more to come. "I Can't Trust My Woman" is great, and I defy you to sit still during the righteously houserockin' "Magic Boogie." Whew! And on the magnificent slow burner "Crazy Woman," Slim sings: "I got a crazy woman, she got a mind just like a goose; I think I'm going down to buy me a toolbox, I believe that woman she got some screws loose." I don't know what the hell that means, but ... YES! Get this baby.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome live cd!.......1999-11-29

A great live cd with incredible guitar playing. A few songs are a bit long, but overall this is a fantastic cd. I think Magic Slim is the best bluesman around.

5 out of 5 stars A recording which does this Chicago bluesman justice........1999-07-10

Having seen Magic Slim live in Chicago, one can easily agree that he (and his band) are a top-notch representation of today's Chicago Blues. The band is tight and sounds just like they have been playing night after night together in blues clubs around the world (which in fact they have). Magic Slim's infectious, blues drenched guitar and vocals which are so well suited to the material he sings will just about captivate even any a half-serious blues lover listening to this very well rounded recording. I think it's one of his best and certainly the song content is extremely tasteful.

4 out of 5 stars Consummate party album.......1999-05-22

This album has not disappointed late night partygoers for over ten years, it just keeps rockin'. The only thing better is catching a live show in Lincoln or Chicago.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest Chicago blues album ever.......1998-08-01

If you are a fan of Chicago blues and you have never heard of Magic Slim, go immediately and get as many CDs of his as you can find. "Raw Magic" is the very best one, and my favorite blues album of all time. Although it is in part a compilation of some earlier released material, it holds together like a perfect studio album should (for those who think the best blues is live blues, take a listen to this CD). Magic has a powerful voice to match his tremulous and beautifully jarring guitar playing. The rhythm guitarist, Jr. Pettis, lays down pulsating chords around Magic's solos that almost sound like an organ. Nate Applewhite and Nick Holt work the drums and bass hard. That's all there is to the sound -- no horns, no piano, no nothing; for my money, the best Chicago blues is exactly that: 2 guitars, a bass, and drums. All the songs on this album are perfect, but especially check out Slim's version of "Mustang Sally" and "In the Heart of the Blu! es" (there is a certain point in the latter, during one of Slim's solos, where I can actually see God, no joke).

5 out of 5 stars See What You're Doin' To Me- Vol 2 of The Zoo Bar Collection.......2007-01-12

I feel like I've been missing out on a great secret having only recently discovered Magic Slim. If you appreciate the raw slashing West Side Chicago style of the 70's, (Hound dog Taylor, Magic Sam) you're in for a treat. Magic Slim used to fill in for Hound Dog Taylor and is a verteran of the Chicago scene. Liner notes here are a bit odd, only a snippet of an interview with Magic Slim (Morris Holt) and no mention of the gig, recording notes or dates. (although there are personnel notes)But the recording itself is great. Engineer was on the ball; Beautiful saturated ambient club sound, with the bass round and right there and all vocals and instruments well-recorded. The performances are great too. This is part of (I believe) a 5 disc array of the "Zoo Bar Collection"- "best of" live performances.
Listen to the real deal from back in the good old days when it was still being cranked out loud in the tiny West side and South side clubs. All that blues energy, with that beautiful SPACE between the notes...

Magic Slim (Morris Holt) is best known for carrying on the Windy City tradition of back-to-the-basics blues bar bands, blasting out a quintessential sound that the music's legends would appreciate and that its newest fans can still enjoy. With Blue Magic, Holt and the Teardrops take a few steps outside their home turf for a New York City session with several surprises. Although most of the material is Holt's, the new album features several conspicuous exceptions, such as an intriguing attempt at country legend Merle Haggard's "I Started Loving You Again." But it's producer Popa Chubby's updating of the Bobby Rush gem "Chickenheads," popularized by Holt's fellow Chicago stalwart Mighty Joe Young, that is the most adventurous experiment. With the band sitting out, Popa Chubby takes over all the rhythm duties and adds sampled loops to the mix. Its reconfiguration is counterbalanced by the group's experienced, no-nonsense take on the Howlin' Wolf classic "How Many More Years." Magic Slim's trademark guitar vibrato is similarly balanced by his gruff vocals and the Teardrops, minus brother Nick Holt but still including guitarist Michael Dotson, consistently demonstrate themselves capable of transforming any studio or stage into a first-class Chicago blues bar. --Michael Point

Unfortunately, this is what Chicago's baddest bluesman sounds like when he's been defanged. Better to start your collection with "Snakebite" or the classic "Gravel Road." Time marches on and this is not the same band without John Primer and Nick Holt. One star added for including the PC video.

    3 out of 5 stars A bit tired, but still it's Slim.......2002-07-31

A new Magic Slim album is always a good thing. But "Blue Magic," his fifth album on Blind Pig, seems like less of a good thing than usual. In fact, of the eight Magic Slim albums I own, I'd rank this, well, eighth. Sliced down to 10 tracks from the usual 11 or 12, and featuring some of Slim's least inspired self-penned songs, "Blue Magic" seems a bit tired and lacks the full-out commitment of other Magic Slim discs. Popa Chubby, who as an artist seems to be trying to shake up the blues world, seems to try to give Slim a few nudges into the unfamiliar, but his production, though somewhat inconsistent from track to track, is neither here nor there. Slim tries to bluesify a country song, Merle Haggard's "I Started Loving You Again" and, while interesting, it might have been better left to a live show. The funky "Chickenheads," also not written by Slim, is pretty strong. It's Slim's originals that are lacking. Really, the disc is still pretty good - Slim can't make a bad album - but it seems a bit tired, certainly miles behind his best work such as the brilliant and diverse "Black Tornado." Interestingly, Slim's guitar seems to be mixed a little too high (something I never thought I'd say) and is a bit too piercing and strident. Perhaps the absence of Slim's brother Nick Holt on bass (I'm not sure what happened there) can explain the disc's shortcomings; perhaps it's all about chemistry. Still, Magic Slim is Magic Slim, and "Blue Magic" is certainly worth owning, but if you're being selective there's lots better Slim out there.

    3 out of 5 stars Not Slim's Best..........2002-07-30

...but it still is pretty damned good. If you've ever seen Slim and the Teardrops (as I have a couple times at the tiny B.L.U.E.S. in Chicago) you're probably already a fan. The best thing about Slim is his ability to use a stripped down, guitar intensive arrangement to transform even the most venerable (and often boring) blues tunes into something fresh and compelling. Coupled with his own catchy, driving originals, albums like "Black Tornado" crackle with energy.

Unfortunately, this album is uneven. Whereas with "Black Tornado" one can just enjoy listening to a killer blues band, this one sounds like it's self-conciously trying to be an album. In my opinion, that doesn't work as well for Slim. In spots, Popa Chubby's production is too much, taking some of the spontaneous grit away from the performance. Slim's guitar playing is, as always, magnificent, but it sounds a bit more processed than before--a real shame, because he has some truly killer tone.

As an introduction to Magic Slim, I can't recommend this album. But it's still Slim, and that's pretty damned good!

      Album Description

First time on CD for the 1981 sophomore album from former New York Dolls member Sylvain Sylvain, which reached #123 in the Billboard Pop Albums chart. On this release, Sylvain downplays the `50s vibe of his debut and embraces the new wave scene with equal enthusiasm.

After a string of country-pop hits in the '80s, Steve Wariner seemed to settle into a journeyman's rut until 1998's heart-tugging "Holes in the Floor of Heaven" (and its album, Burnin' the Roadhouse Down) delivered the biggest success of his career. Not surprisingly, Wariner has chosen to go with the emotional flow on this ballad-heavy follow-up. Both the title-track single and "I'm Already Taken" (a remake of his debut recording from 1978) cross the line where sentiment becomes sap, while too much of the rest is bland at best. For variety's sake, the 15 selections include a duet with Bryan White on the cornball "Talk to Her Heart," a cover of Rod Stewart's "For the First Time," and an album-closing instrumental, "The Harry Shuffle," that showcases Wariner's nimble guitar picking. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars My very first Country contact.......2000-11-10

On vacation in California, TWO TEARDROPS was my first contact with country music, which is in Germany still known as "Country and Western", but this new sound was really new for me. I didn't get this album title song out of my mind, so I bought this CD. Song after song I have to say that this kind of music would be very easy to export, but there are only limited efforts to do this. I really can't understand, why Steve Wariner is well known in the US, but absolutely unknown in Europe. I will go and buy more music of him.

      5 out of 5 stars Two Teardrops . . . . Five Stars.......2000-05-15

I am an avid Steve Wariner fan, but even if I weren't, in my opinion this IS the country music album of 1999. How is it possible to follow-up a smash hit like "Holes In the Floor of Heaven"? Multi-talented Steve has answered that question with this great CD. The record is well balanced between upbeat rockers, slower ballads, throw in a couple of mid-tempo numbers and "The Harry Shuffle", an instrumental done a la Chet Atkins. Steve teams up with Bryan White on "Talk To Her Heart" and Steve's son Ryan makes his debut by playing guitar on "So Much". Look for two songs co-written by Steve & Marcus Hummon ("So Much" and "Cry No More"), who I feel is one of today's top songwriters. And the title track, written by Steve & Bill Anderson, shows Steve's songwriting skills at their best. No matter what your taste in country music is, you can't go wrong with this CD. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars His Best Album Since The 80's.......2000-02-12

Having Been a fan of "older" Steve Wariner songs such as "Kansas City Lights", "Lonely Women Make Good Lovers", "Your Memory" and "By Now" from several years ago, I didn't quite care for Steve much in the 90's with the exceptions of certain songs such as "Drivin' And Cryin" and "It Won't Be Over You". But with this album that I took a chance on buying for the hit single "Two Teardrops", hoping that it wouldn't be the only good song on the album.

Was I glad I got it! The title track only hinted at the catchy songs on this album. This has got to be the best album of Steve's career. I was really impressed with so many good songs and only a few throwaways. The other catchy tunes here are "Hands Of Time", "You Be My Everything", "I've Been In That Movie", "Talk To Her Heart", "So Much", "That's The Love For You", "Cry No More", "Since You Walked Away" and "For The First Time". As You can see this is a very good CD and worth the money.

Hopefully radio will be willing to play these hits. Steve must be one of the most talented guys in Nashville as he is the "Eddie Van Halen" of Country music with his guitar playing, he can write hit songs and he can sing with the best of them. You won't see Steve disappearing anytime soon.

Steve is very good at entertaning people, and he is a very good writer and singer, which is very rare to find.keep the good work up steve, you dont need Garth or nobodyto help you achieve you goal.

5 out of 5 stars The most underated country star in the business..........2000-01-24

Steve Wariner is the most underated and under appreciated star in country music today. He has been making consistently great music for more than 20 years now. I have every album he has ever made and my favorites are Two Teardrops, I Am Ready and Drive. He is a phenomenal guitar player (he used to be a studio musician) and a great singer (even though he says he's not a great singer). I am a singer and I love to sing his music. No wonder Bryan White mentored with Steve. You can keep Alan Jackson, George Strait, Kenny Chesney and the rest of those hokey wanna-be's. Steve Wariner is the real thing. He is the best country has to offer!
