Allen's sense of humor starts with the cover; get past the Great Expectorator and the songs themselves--full of picking, fiddling, and other stations of the cross--are mostly split between ones about the Second Coming and ones about folks in need of His forgiveness.

Legendary Among The Discerning Few.......2005-08-08
Perhaps the final holdout of Texas songwriting's Greatest Generation who has yet to be given a late-career-lifting re-discovery by the music press. Terry Allen stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Townes Van Zant, Guy Clark, Joe Ely, Butch Hancock and the rest who rose up in the 70s and whose influence never went away. This is an amazing CD; it's brimming with great songs that tell stories you can't think up on your own. Like the shamen of long ago, Terry Allen weaves tales of universal experience wrought in dreamscapes of familiar places and people we'd encounter any day.
More twisted country from Terry Allen.......2003-03-24
Salivation" expands upon "Human remains". Human Remains is one of those CDs that begins resonating only after you've heard it several times. On that one, he collaborated with David Byrne and Lucinda Williams. Salivation is an evolution of the earlier CD. Regretfully, Byrne and Lucinda are nowhere to be found on it, but new instruments, especially the marimba (or maybe it's a vibraphone?) have been added to the mix with great effects.
Some have described Allen's music as country. It's a lot more complex than that, as you can pick up all kinds of musical references throughout. It's difficult to tell whether he's mocking or afraid of Jesus, allowing the listener to appreciate it regardless of religious beliefs. He likes to weave songs within songs, which adds to the intrigue and complexity One of the strangest things I've ever heard has got to be the intro to the second track, where he talks like a spaced out Donald Duck.
If you're not afraid of musicians who blend genres while kicking up a killer beat and drawing you in, then check this out.

If there is such a thing as a pure county sing writer, Terry Allen one of the few in todays music scene. His music and words blend to make a wonderful art form. Not to many people know that Terry Allen is also a performance arts. He makes art for that we in the art world call art for a big "A". Try all of Terry's work, you will not be let down.
