Editorial Reviews

Kate Bredimus, Richmond.com, April 2003
The Taters grew up in the golden age of AM radio, filtering those influences into their eclectic, blissful roots pop"

Product Description:
With their latest CD, "RECESS", the Taters' commitment to tight hooks and vocal harmonies is stronger than ever. Their third release as The Taters (started as "Burnt Taters" in 1997, the band shortened to simply "The Taters" in 2002) is their best yet, and really reinforces their belief that certain things in music are timeless. "The songs, and the joy of playing them, has always been what drew us to music in the first place," Craig admits. "We've never been about attitude, and I think that's what keeps our sound fresh. The things that made a song good in 1920 will still be the things that make a song good in 2020, and that's how we approach our writing and performing."

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has alternately described his band's third album as "completely over the top" and "borderline psychotic." But even those words can't adequately prepare fans of the group's 2004 platinum major-label debut, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, for the onslaught of twisted song suites, glam-rock cannon fire and drama-club theatrics that make up The Black Parade. Tracks like "Mama" and "The End" make "Bohemian Rhapsody" sound like "Blitzkrieg Bop." It's no coincidence that the disc feels as dizzyingly monumental as Green Day's American Idiot--after all, the two albums share the same label, producer, studio, janitorial team, and sense of apocalyptic dread. Similarly, The Black Parade will cast its creators in a completely new light. Despite its overly histrionic tendencies and a totally oddball cameo from Liza Minelli, it offers a clear signal that My Chemical Romance is ready to be taken seriously. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

The Black Parade, My Chemical Romance's follow-up to its 2004 platinum major-label debut Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, "is way more dramatic, way more theatrical, completely over the top, borderline psychotic," says Gerard Way. "It's the most pure, intense thing we've ever been involved in." Producer by Rob Cavallo (Green Day), the album is a celebration of lvoe and death and darkness. Join The Black Parade. The Limited Edition special packaging features an 11-11/16" x 5-13/16", long skinny box with hinged lid, wrapped in black velveteen material, with a debossed design on the top. The 64-page bound paperback book inside the box is modeled after a Victorian-style photo album, and contains Gerard's drawings, making-of-the-album notes, and more.

Such a great product!!!! The cd was filled with great songs and the 72-page book kept me reading all night. The book really helps you see the struggles MCR went through as a band to get to where they are now and there's great commentary on each of the songs by members of the band. I highly reccommend this to any true MCR fan!! And even if you're not a fan, you'd still enjoy it.

2 out of 5 stars Another whiny album .......2007-06-13

NOTE I DON'T HATE EMOS BUT COME ON, DON'T YOU HAVE ANYTHING ELSE TO SAY OR WEAR ,OTHER THAN PAIN OR BLACK ! Anyways the music is good ,gives you the feel of The Sex Pistols and the Hard Punk Pop Rock feel .What kills It ,is the Girl voice of Gerard Way that Fu****cks Everything up .And the whining lyrics .DON'T BUY THIS IF YOUR NOT EMO ,And If you are emo your a proud fan :::)

Love the "fuzzy box". You get the Black Parade album (explicit-tho the "clean" version is really not) and an in-depth booklet journey into the minds and madness from writing the album at the haunted hotel "The Paramour". Some of the songs are explained by various group members. We see into the thoughts of a very cool band on top of their game doubting themselves on the eve of a tour explosion in 2006/7-they did not see the overwhelming response it would bring around the world. Wish it had been released first or I had known about the collector set first-now I have 3, yes, 3 Black Parade CD's (original-which is now scratched to pieces from overplay, fuzzy box CD & "Clean" version which I still can't play at work. Get the box-definitely.

5 out of 5 stars Worth 200 million stars.......2007-04-07

My Chemical Romance is by far one of the best bands out there, and this album proves it. You can see how much this band put into their work and how empowering everything is. I have this limited edition version of the Black Parade and it is amazing. The extra cards are so cool and the booklet is hard to put down. Then there's the cd...oh the cd. It's one of the best cd's I own and it really shows MCR's growth.

The End- A great opening that shows you just what to expect in the other tracks

Dead!- One of my favorite MCR songs ever. It has a great beat that never gets old

This is how I Disappear- Amazing song, It sounds really cool towards the end

The Sharpest Lives- I love this song! Great lyrics and also a good beat

Welcome to the Black Parade- This is the definition of a rock opera. It has all sorts of different parts to it that makes it so epic.

I Don't Love You- Such a sad song, watch the music video and see how emotional Gerard Way (the lead singer) is. so sad! (I love Gerard!!)

House of Wolves- Another of my favorite songs, it is so energetic and lively!!!

Cancer- Also sad, not one of my personal favorites but it is a really beautiful song

Mama- A different song, but still awesome. It sounds so cool...enough said

Sleep- Very, very sad. Especially when you hear a man at the end say "I can't even wake up." *tear*

Teenagers- The chorus of this song is so addictive. It's a song that make you want to get up and jump around...

Disenchanted- Yet another sad song with a little bit of a faster pace. I can't describe this song really, just listen to it...it's good.

Famous Last Words- WOW!!!!!!!!! Most definately the BEST SONG EVER!!!! My favorite song by MCR!! In the lyrics, music, and video they are really giving it there all.

Hidden Track: Blood- A hilarious song that has sort of the music style like Mama in a way.

My Chemical Romance is an amazing band. At first I hated them, thinking that they were just some Green Day wannabe's because they dressed like them and now had the same producer. But I never listened to them and I was so0o0o0o0o0o0o0o wrong. They are totally different in a good way, and I love both Green Day and My Chemical Romance. They have incredibly enchanting lyrics and riffs that just blow me away. They are not emo, or goth. They consider themselves punk rock or simply just rock for the most part. Don't judge them before you listen to them with an open mind. Just listen and you'll see....

Oh baby! Get out to the nearest record store and buy this monster NOW! It is really a change in direction from the "Horror Stories" era garage type stuff but, it rules just as much! Teenage girls and free cocaine? How can 'ya go wrong? This is the kind of rock'n'roll that makes you want to smash a bottle of whiskey over your head and punch a perfect stranger in the face! Yeeeeeaaaaaahhhhh! Pure thug-punk moronics and super-bad rock'n'roll. The Dwarves rule!

Growing up, able to see FYP play all over was a godsend for a heathen like me. I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes their punk pure, melodic and raunchy.
Take the sex pistols...multiply by bad brains...subtract some AFI and a huge taco bell...to the power of San Pedro, CA, the most hardcore city in the united states and you'll get FYP, the band that wouldnt shutup!

5 out of 5 stars pure fun.......2002-06-27

God I love this album. I got it when they were touring in support of it and I never stopped listening to it for the rest of that summer. Six years have passed and I still love it just as much. It is one of the most fun albums ever made. They graduated from the great kindergarden mentality of their previous releases and made it up to maybe fourth grade here. I'm a punk rock purest who thinks punk died in '77, but these guys revitalized punk for a new generation. It's fast, sloppy, and out of key, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Suprisingly, that makes them even better. Thank you, F.Y.P.

5 out of 5 stars DWARVES ARE REAL!.......1999-06-05

Back around 1983 or so, when hardcore had become a completely mindless "punk by numbers" style of music, (though nowhere near as stale as the nineties variety, new skool, cash crop variety) bands that were cool had to rediscover just what the hell made rock 'n' roll exciting in the first place. Most discovered the glory that is the Stooges, and then went back in time from there-- MC5, Velvets, Elevators, Watchband, Sonics, Chuck Berry and earlier... Discovering these sounds, and reinventing them with the energy and irreverence that punk rock brought to the mix in the late seventies, The Dwarves (along with a few others that kept music alive in the drought of the late eighties underground scene) were able to make a lasting contribution to the raw American Rock n Roll tradition. The covers here are brilliant, and are mostly revamped Pebbles' cuts. This is the Dwarves/Suburban Nightmare in their early days (daze), before all the blood, guts and pussy. More like Booze, ludes and fuzz pedals here... Essential.

Could Disney be hoping that contemporary kids and their keepers will bond together over this compilation of '60s AM hits disguised as a cartoon soundtrack? Perhaps they envision serious parent-child discussions about the relative merits of the album's two versions of "Dancing in the Streets"--the Martha Reeves & the Vandellas original versus the Britney-fied beats and Whitney-fied melisma of Myra's update. (Hint: Myra tries much harder but achieves much less.) Or maybe they just want to expose the world to Robert Goulet's clueless take on the Lemon Pipers' "Green Tambourine" (a Shatneresque cover that's conspicuously absent from Bob's "16 Most Requested Songs" album). With such good intentions, you can easily forgive them for trying to make a quick buck with this underinspired collection of overanthologized pop, rock, and soul hits. --Bill Forman

    4 out of 5 stars Recess: School's Out Reveiw.......2003-10-14

I'm a big fan of the hit t.v. series, Recess. It has mild violence (meaning little kindergardeners beating up ningas), and may want to keep children 3 yrs and younger away from the screen for a couple minuets (don't laugh at this paper if I spell MINUET wrong because I'm only 10 yrs old. I mean c'mon, can't a guy spell a word wrong....everybody does it) though they might keep laughing and maybe you might be laughing (I mean you don't see little kids beating on ningas every day)too.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun CD From A Very Fun Movie.......2001-09-29

Disney's "Recess: School's Out" is the kind of movie you wish would come out more often. It may not be the most intellectually stimulating, thought provoking film to ever grace the movie screen, but then what would it be? What is it is a fantastic piece of entertainment, and the soundtrack follows well in the tradition of the film. Borrowing strongly from hits from the '60s, the soundtrack includes two versions of "Dancing In the Street": the original, and a new version by Disney's latest pop icon, Myra. The CD also has classics like "Born To Be Wild" and "Let the Sunshine In". Also notable is a new rendition of "Green Tambourine" sung by Robert Goulet which can be seen in the credits at the end of the film, and "Recess Suite", a five minute track combining all the different score variations from the movie.

5 out of 5 stars This music rocks!.......2001-08-21

This music is upbeat and great for kids to listen to.One of my personal favorites was "wipeout".If you are reading this opinion I suggest you listen to it if you didn't yet.I like this music alot, you probably would too.RECESS ROCKS!

5 out of 5 stars This soundtrack does not whomp!.......2001-03-08

I thought that all the songs in this movie fit the story really well. It was a great movie especially if you watch the TV show. It was really cool to see a movie go back to 60s music instead of all pop. The new versions of some of the songs are not as good as the originals but they fit in the movie better and are not bad.

1 out of 5 stars This review goes to the movie.......2001-03-05

This movie, is probably the third worst movie we saw on February of 2001, the movie tries to exactly do the same things that the Rugrats movie did, but it fails, for exapmple, in the animation, the jokes try to be funny, but they aren't they are used, they are exactly the same jokes we see on the cartoon, and altough they are new ones, none of them work, also it's a bit stupid, but the soundtrack is great, especially for the Martha and the Vandella's song.

4 out of 5 stars Silly poppy fun.......2006-10-25

Beginning as West Virginia's answer to Ben Folds Five, the Argument made one of the most fun unknown pop groups you'd never heard of. Imagine 80s pop if it didn't suck and had good production and you might be halfway there, but this was also more musically solid (and witty). Scott Simons made bad relationships, bitterness and slacker life sound touching and hilarious at the same time. TA may have been pop through and through but they had Aimee Mann's clever way with lyrics, a bouncy catchiness Weezer would envy, and at one point they were recognized with some award for Most Ridiculously Tight Harmonies. (Their debut album title was also ripped off by the Hives, but that could just be a coincidence.)

Fast forward to 2004. With Recess Serenade there was no more 'gee, they sound eerily like BF5' feeling; their own sound was coming out loud and clear. It wasn't quite as strong in the lyrics department and had one or two duds ("Everybody's Sellin' Something" really should have made its already-obvious point subtly rather than driving it home with a sledgehammer), but musically they were growing by leaps and bounds. "Song One" is quaintly endearing with almost a Steely Dan feeling. "Movin' In" lies between the Cars and the Kinks with a modern edge to both. "Act My Age" stands as one of their most fun singalongs as well as a quintessential theme song for more people than will ever know it, and if there was any justice in the world "Soaked" would have been a college-radio staple ballad from one end of this continent to the other.

Alas, after another (quite good) EP they recently split up. But that's another story.

Recess Serenade isn't a perfect pop masterpiece for the ages, but it's an infectious disc that (for the most part) shouldn't disappoint. Indie rock needs a shot of fun now and then to balance out the depressing emo side, and this fits the bill most nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Creative album, very innovative considering release date.......2006-02-21

This album definately inspired some great bands. With guitar riffs ranging from the likes of Between the Buried and Me, Black Dahlia Murder, and Bleeding Through. And vocals ranging from talking, reminding me of Remembering Never's Mean Pete, near-punk vocals and chorus lines similar to Folly, and best of all she shrieks and growls comparing to The Agony Scene or Trevor of Black Dahlia Murder. As for the breakdowns...WOW. Imagine everything Ive said so far but with some of the most "brutal" breakdowns you've heard. I'd put them up there with The Red Chord, The Bled (His First Crush), and On Broken Wings. This CD is a brilliant combination of metal-core, classic hardcore/good punk, and death metal. Any true metal-core fan should own this cd or buy it today.

        5 out of 5 stars brutal.......2005-05-08

i ordered this cd back in 2004. i just happened to stumble across it. what i came across was something amazing. the different types of screams, ranging from highs to lows, combined with plenty of double bass, blast beats, heavy chug chug breakdowns, and melodic guitars make this cd a must have for metal and hardcore fans alike. too bad they broke up. why oh why?

Rifles at Recess is amazing in every way. The vocals are mind blowing. The guitars are both melodic and crazy at the same time. the drums are just flat out effing awsome. This is definelty one of my favorite cd's.

        5 out of 5 stars Melodic/brutal assult at once..........2004-06-01

Pretty good but i dont know what to classify rifles at recess as i mean they sound like a mix between melodic deathmetal with hardcore vocals...Pretty good over-all! Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars brutal but not metal enough.......2004-02-26

I love this band it may be the only hardcore i can stand with the exception of madball and skarhead but old skool hardcore just makes my junk all hard ;), but the riffs are very well thought up, they remind me of cephalic carnage, a much lighter version, and the singer sings exactly like i do, its to clear for metal, im a thrash and pwoer metal head, you know such as pantera, iced earth old sepultura, entombed etc.... but all in all this band sticks it out and is pretty damn good on a brutality rating they get a 4 out of 5
