Prisoner of Love

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
At the age of 74, Ray Price has released an album that can be heard as both a career capper and an ambitious new chapter. After acknowledging his honky-tonk roots with the opening "Better Class of Loser," the countrypolitan crooner addresses the classic American songbook, applying his conversational phrasing to material immortalized by the likes of Louis Armstrong ("What a Wonderful World"), Frank Sinatra ("Fly Me to the Moon"), and Billie Holiday ("Body & Soul"). Only the Beatles' "In My Life" sounds like too much of an interpretive stretch for Price. Where many of his crossover hits in the '60s and early '70s suffered from saccharine production, here the string arrangements by David Campbell (father of pop star Beck) recall the bittersweet sophistication of Nelson Riddle's Sinatra sessions. File Prisoner of Love next to Willie Nelson's Stardust on the short shelf of genre-busting country classics. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars BRAVO, Asv!!!!!.......2007-01-29

This is another review from the GIRL who wrote the other kid's review from Dec.11. I wanted to say that I am a GIRL because another reviewer posted a comment on my review and called me a YOUNG MAN. A LAD. But I am not, I am a YOUNG WOMAN. A LASS. Now, I am sure this was unintentional becuase I did not state my gender in the last review, and I thank the person who wrote commen for their kind remarks, but I just HAD to say this because being called a young man did not agree with me, and I did not want other people who might read my review to get the wrong idea. Now then, this CD is great!! The English label Asv really makes nice CDs of old-timey music, and this one is as good as all the others they make. Russ's voice comes over un-static and overally clear. If you like his music, this is a must-have!! My favorite track is the title song, PRISONER OF LOVE. It has always been my favorite song by Columbo since I heard it. When he sings it in is deep, romantic, thrilling voice, it seems like he really means it. Like he really is caring passionately for is girlfriend, he can never love another...SO SAD! His voice is so compelling, so romantic, ahhh...I am so sad that he died!!

5 out of 5 stars Even I appreciate the talent of tragic Russ Columbo !.......2006-12-12

Hi. I've always preffered Bing Crosby or Rudy Valee to dumb rappers today like 50 Cent. My friends are always listening and sighing over a new song by some rapper like Usher or what, but personally love sighing over the romantic voices of the old crooners of the 30s. And my favorite crooner of all time is Russ Columbo. Well, actually I like Dick Powell better, but only when he sings to Ruby Keeler, because I think that she was his best partner. But back to Russ. When you hear that deep, romantic voice, you can't help falling in love with it. I bought this after I saw a Russ Columbo movie, 1934's Wake Up and Dream. I loved it! I loved Russ's voice, I didn't particularly like Roger Pyror, there were nice musical numbers, and my favorite actress JUNE KNIGHT from my favorite movie, the BROADWAY MELODY OF 1936 was in it, so it kept me pretty happy. You should see it if you really like Columbo. Also his Broadway Through a Keyhole movie, a story based on the adventures of Al Jolson and Mrs. Al Jolson, aka Ruby Keeler. It's also good a movie. This is a good CD. The sound is clear enough, the price is resonable, so all you need to do is turn on yout ipod, sit back, relax, and let the dreamy, romantic voice of Russ Columbo, the greatest crooner ever who died way too young.

4 out of 5 stars Good Crooner.......2005-03-31

It's difficult to speculate where Russ Columbo would have gone in his career. Many (including my own father) claim that he was copied by Bing Crosby. If you listen to a number of late 1920s solo recordings by Bing, when he was with Paul Whiteman's Rhythm Boys, you may conclude, as I do, that this is not the case. Regardless, there is room for both, and Columbo may have developed into a stronger singer had the tragic event that ended his life not occurred. In a 2-reel short, that I saw him in, Columbo presented a breezy acting style and likeable personality which he probably could have parlayed into a movie career. It's a sad story. Enjoy these wonderful songs evoking the early depression-era 1930s.

5 out of 5 stars Just listen and ponder what might have been.......2004-06-03

In September 1934 Russ Columbo had the world on a string. Just 26 years old, Columbo had established himself as one of the up and coming male vocalists of the day. He was also a trained violinist. He hosted his own NBC radio network show and had already made a splash in the movies. In addition, he was also a very capable songwriter. So much to live for. Yet in one of the most bizarre incidents you'll ever hear of Russ Columbo lost his life on September 2, 1934. Columbo was visiting a close friend who kept a set of supposedly unloaded Civil War dueling pistols on his desk as paper weights. In order to light a cigarette his friend struck a match on one of the pistols in such a way as to set off a charge that was still in the gun. The bullet ricocheted off a table and struck Russ Colombo in the forehead. He died a few hours later.
I have heard about Russ Columbo for many years now but I had never once heard his music. Curiosity finally got the best of me and I ordered this collection of his music from London's ASV label. No doubt about it. Russ Columbo was the real deal. According to the liner notes, Russ Columbo only recorded around 35 sides. 23 of them are included in this fascinating collection. You'll find many familiar tunes here including the original version of "Prisoner of Love", a tune Columbo co-wrote and was later made popular by Perry Como. You'll also find other standards like "Where The Blue of the Night", "Guilty", "All of Me" and Russ' theme song "You Call It Madness (I Call It Love)". There is just no telling how far he would have gone had he lived. Chances are he would be a household name like his rival crooner Bing Crosby rather than merely a footnote in the history of American popular music. But judge for yourself. The quality of these recordings is remarkable considering that they were lifted off 70 year old 78's. The liner notes are OK but I craved to know a bit more.
All in all this is a very nice offering at a reasonable price. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Best Columbo Collection around.......2003-10-15

Given the ghastly audio quality of the 2003 Taragon/BMG Columbo set, this compilation seems even better than it did when first issued! Nice collection spanning Russ's 1928-1934 recording career. Note, one track (the Gus Arnheim Orchestra's "Glad Rag Doll") does not have a Columbo vocal although he is present as a violinist. Great vintage tunes and Columbo's rich delivery make this a must for lovers of romantic 1930's balladry.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Newman..........2005-03-29

Nothing else on this disc will surpass the the bold hauntingly beautiful Cathy's theme from the "Wuthering Heights"suite.
We are then given lesser known selections from the 1930s, 40s era
of Alfred Newmans extraordinary film score output. "Prince of Foxes" the Italian renaissance historical novel wasn't even shot in technicolor, but we are given a marvelous panoramic Newman score, complimenting the period costumes and sets. The seductive theme from "David and Bathsheba" is a bit reminicent of R Straus's "Dance of the Seven Vails" but not as beefy in orchestration nor development. "Dragonwyck" is another gothic piece of dark romanticism, with music focusing on eleagant melody with a touch of saddness. In "Prisoner of Zelda" the regal music grandly depicts the the fictional Kingdom of Ruritania. This score was used in 1937 and again in the 1952 remake. Lastly the march from "Brigham Young" ends this disc with the bold determination in music of the Mormon's trek from Illinois to Utah in 1840, and the setting of their domain.
The New Zealand forces are to be commended for their committed playing along with the cinema sonics captured by the engineers. The liner notes list every score Alfred Newman has written from 1930 to "Airport" in 1970.

4 out of 5 stars Must for Wuthering Heights Fans.......2004-10-04

Wonderful tribute to Alfred Newman, the Wuthering Heights suite alone is enough to buy this CD! Beautiful and moving music indeed!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful recording of Newman's early music.......2003-08-07

It has been a long time since a film music recording has captured my imagination and become virtually unforgettable, working its way into my thoughts through the days following my first hearing it. Seldom do I agree with others about the merits of albums released with the usual repeats of themes available on a dozen other recordings. Because of this, I have been accused of being a world-class curmudgeon (among other things) when it comes to preferring faithfulness to a composer+s work, rather than embracing the uninspired and pedantic interpretations we all-too-often get.

It is, therefore, with trepidation -- and with joy -- that I highly recommend to you Koch International+s "Wuthering Heights: A Tribute to Alfred Newman," Richard Kaufman conducting the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The program features Wuthering Heights (12:40), Prince of Foxes (13:19), David and Bathsheba (love theme -- 3:44), Dragonwyck (8:43), The Prisoner of Zenda (7:01), and Brigham Young (5:18).

This album was lovingly produced by the late Tony Thomas, and Edward B. Powell's original orchestrations were preserved throughout. The ambient sound on this disc is wonderful and could serve as a standard for other re-recording projects. Not only are the selections representative of Newman's genius as a film composer, they are performed with impassioned fervor -- and with fidelity to tempo and nuance rarely achieved by other interpreters of Newman's work.

The CD begins with a generous suite arranged by Fred Steiner for "Wuthering Heights," encompassing all the major motifs of Newman's score -- Despair - Twin Motives; Cathy's Theme; Wuthering Heights Motive - The Moors; The Children (Wuthering Heights the early days); The Playcastle; Cathy the Fine Young Lady; Isabella; and Edgar Linton - The Grange. Steiner missed nothing in this arrangement -- it is replete with Newman's trademark sounds, all beautifully performed, including ethereal strings evoking the moors and some hauntingly wonderful instrumental solos. (That haunting, almost eerie string effect made equally impressive appearances in such scores as "Song of Bernadette" and "Twelve O'Clock High"). There are passages within this suite that achieve a purity of sound I've rarely heard. As the Cathy theme is restated in the closing moments, a youth choir is used to near-stunning effect. The suite fully realizes the poignancy and staggering intensity of Newman's score and sound. The New Zealand Symphony is a magnificent body of musicians and it is expertly conducted throughout this disc's program.

The wonderful opening selection is a listening experience that, for Newman lovers, should be nearly cathartic. Because of this, it's probably best to take a breather before continuing on to the magnificent presentation of "Prince of Foxes.". This suite was edited by Tony Thomas and Kaufman leads his orchestra from the explosive opening of percussion of the Prelude through the major motifs of Newman's score for this renaissance film. Borgia's Triumphal March will be more familiar to many as the 'Rescue of Demetrius' from "The Robe" (and it was originally
written for "Hunchback of Notre Dame"), but as is true of all Newman's cross-referenced works, the piece takes on new life with gorgeously different and striking orchestrations. The sequence beginning with Theme Development and continuing through to the end is a stunning orchestral conversation, starting in the flutes, then taken up by cello and violin, interrupted by fanfare, then taken back over by the string section which engages in a wonderful counterpoint exercise. The suite ends majestically with an organ leading into a restatement of the main theme and concluding with full orchestra fortissimo.

The shortest selection in this program is a mesmerizing reading of Newman's love theme from "David and Bathsheba." There are more than 3 minutes of Newman's music here and each second is a gem. It begins with the strings shimmering through the sensual seductive phrases of both the film's main title and Bathsheba's bath scene and segues into a gorgeous reading of the love motif (known in some quarters as 'Rapture of Love') in which the NZO is so beautifully in control that it seems to caress the notes as it weaves a spell. It is contemplative, soulful and searingly heartfelt.

The "Dragonwyck" suite, edited by Tony Thomas, begins with Main Title and Opening, in which the orchestra explodes into a foreboding, gothic maelstrom of sound and then segues into a jaunty, lilting tune. The Dragonwyck theme follows and has a plaintive, yearning quality that evolves into a beautiful light waltz (The Wells Family). The music turns sinister in Miranda, with high strings in a mysterioso passage. Dr. Turner closes the suite (and possibly the film?) with a somber, plaintive restatement of the Dragonwyck theme in the strings and then a full orchestral conclusion.

"The Prisoner of Zenda" is one of the best movies ever made and Newman's score to this film is one of the finest ever written. Arranged by Christopher Palmer -- and titled "A Ruritanian Rhapsody for Orchestra" -- Kaufman and the NZO give this music a robust, rapturous reading, complete with fanfares and ariations -- from tender to majestic -- of the regal main theme which serves double duty as a theme of dynastic tradition and as a love theme. There is also swashbuckling bravado representing the rescue of the Prince, the sword fight and the escape of Rupert of Hentzau. This score, in fact, served notice that Alfred Newman not only greatly admired Erich Wolfang Korngold, but could hold his own writing in the Korngoldian style. "Zenda" is a Newman score that deserves to be recorded in its entirety, but this suite beautifully captures many of its highlights. I wanted much more, but this will do.

The final selection is the rousing "Brigham Young: A Symphonic March,." adapted and arranged by Fred Steiner "from The March, 'The Trek,' and the hymn tune by William W. Phelps 'the Spirit of Gold like a fire is burning.'" (from the booklet notes). There is a wonderful "pioneer" flavor to this robust march, and it is a rhythmic crowd-pleaser.

5 out of 5 stars Ray Demonstrates His Versatility.......2006-11-28

After buying Ray Price's "Time" CD (highly recommended) and seeing him in concert (fabulous), I went back and bought "Prisoner of Love." His voice remains excellent in his 70s. This CD expands his versatile output by doing pop standards. The best song on the CD is the gorgeous "If It's Love (Then Bet it All)." Other highlights are the poignant "I Wish I Was 18 Again", "The Only Bridge", "In My Life", "Soft Rain", and a very nice cover of "Ramblin' Rose." His pop-style re-recording of "I've Got a New Heartache" is almost a different song than this honky-tonk version of the 1950s. Which one you like better is a matter of personal taste, but I like the new version better. If you like Ray's countrypolitan sound when he did "For the Good Times" and "I'd Rather Be Sorry", you definitely should buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Only Better with Age.......2004-01-13

I have long been a Ray Price fan and know of no other artist whose voice has only gotten better with age. It's hard to believe that at 74 (his age when this was recorded), one could have such a strong, clear voice. His recording of "I wish I was eighteen again" brings tears to my eyes. I recall when George Burns recorded this song--but his recording doesn't "hold a candle" to the "polish" added by Ray. This is a different Ray Price Album--but one that a true fan will want as it captures Ray at his very best.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Voice.......2003-01-26

Ray Price as a crooner. All the album is not liked .Then after several listening, one adores the remainder. One is captive by this voice.this great voice and these great musicians.
One swingue on "better glass of loosers,"soft rain","ramblin' rose","i've got a new heartache".....
One must have this album of Ray Price. It is essential.
How not enter in the legend after that!

5 out of 5 stars Soft Rain.......2000-10-18

I have listened to Ray Price for many many years and I have never found anyone that comes close to his music or his wonderful voice. I have as many albums, cassettes and CD that I can find. I played his music so much I have my children as crazy over him as I am. He has not gotten the recognizion he deserves. I saw him in Casper, Wyoming again in Sparks, Nv. and I absolutely love his music. He puts on one of the best shows I have ever seen. He is worth traveling miles to see.

5 out of 5 stars It's About Time!.......2000-07-04

As Ray stated when he finally made it into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1956 "It's About Time" - I feel the same about this CD! We've waited for 2 years to see it finally released and it is NOT a disapointment! Ray Price once again proves he can sing any song and make it sound like he was the original! There has never been a voice in country music that can compare to his. Even at age 74 his compelling renditions of such standards as "Fly Me To The Moon", "Beautiful World", "Body and Soul" and the title cut "Prisoner of Love" are simply Ray Price at his best! I personally have loved hearing Ray perform "18 Again" over the past several years & treasure the fact that I now have this "Ray Price" song in my collection. Do not call this a "country" recording, just call it a great recording by a great artist! Thanks Ray for continuing your pursuit of the best in music!

5 out of 5 stars Let this be the doorway to heaven.......2004-10-11

A few years ago I heard this sampler. From off that day I've been wanting to have this collection. I never brought anything of Beethoven since I always thought, one day Im going to get the entire set of music, so by now I am about halfway the collection. I have 10 volumes and I can tell you that it absolutely rocks. I dont know any other composer making such fantastic music. Not to mention the diversity, the quality and the performances, which are all top notch. Although I think no-one had expected otherwise from DG.

Like I said let this sampler be the doorway to heavenly music. You soon will find out that there is no beter composer than Ludwich From Beethoven.

      4 out of 5 stars Wonderful sampler.......2000-10-22

This sampler of the Complete Beethoven Edition is a steal. Over 70 minutes of music, a wide variety of Beethoven's work (not just highlights of his better known works). It is packaged with a beautifully illustrated booklet containing performance info, information about the more complete sets in this collection, and Beethoven's life (in three languages). The recording quality varies, with session dates on the sampler ranging from 1963 to present, but everything (though not all definitive performances) is done quite well. This would be a great introduction to the world of Beethoven, or super to carry around in the car.

This set is a fine introduction to Beethoven for a certain class of listeners. It is much too long, detailed, and serious for children. It is not for advanced musicologists, either. Author-narrator Jeremy Siepmann avoids musical analysis altogether, concentrating instead on biographical material about Beethoven and his friends and providing historical and social background. Siepmann's text is absorbing and is frequently illustrated with substantial music examples (usually complete movements) from the Naxos catalog. Unfortunately, the first such example (from the Seventh Symphony) sounds regrettably mushy, but otherwise, the performances are consistently rewarding. If Naxos has put together this set, with its very large booklet, partly to promote its catalog of Beethoven recordings, the company may well find listeners attracted by the examples offered. The complete reproduction of the spoken text seems like a waste of space and paper, but the remaining material in the booklet is intelligently written and useful. Even people generally familiar with Beethoven are sure to find something new and interesting here. --Leslie Gerber

This project from 1989 is produced by Kenny and features him with members of Miles Davis' working band of that era (including Miles himself, Darrell Jones, Marcus Miller, Foley, Ricky Wellman, Mino Cinelu) and others. A must for fans of Miles or Kenny.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soul Album with a sexy voice.......2003-04-14

In my view Geoffrey Williams has the most sexiest UK R&B Voice. This album includes his hits "Lipstick" and "Blue". Geoffrey is also known as a writer for e.g. Eternal and Michael Jackson, so this man is a real talent. He has been very influential on many soul artists and is very underrated. This is his second album.
