4 out of 5 stars Making Music on the Beauty Way.......2007-03-18

Eliza Gilkyson comes from a musical family. Her father wrote both pop hits and Disney movie tunes, while her brother Tony played in an incarnation of X and was also involved with the movie "Walk The Line. To that end. "Hard Times In A Babylon" reflects Eliza's legacy. Like Lucinda Williams' "Gravel Road" CD, this album has a great deal to do with the drive to create, with the pitfalls, the hope and the redemption.

I saw Eliza play a show with Casey Chambers and Patty Griffin, and was enchanted by the two songs she played from "Hard Times In Babylon." First was "Beauty Way," which charts the course she took after her father. The best line is the description of the lure of fame and the disappointment of the illusion in the distance: "By the time I hit L.A. I was hotter than a pistol, but you're never hot enough." She introduced the song during the show by describing how her Father wrote for "The Jungle Book." "'Bear Necessities' paid for my braces...."

The second is the tender title track, mourning the loss of a friend. Again, touching on the joys and hardships in the creative soul, Eliza asks "Woody you could have called out/There's not a man or a woman here in the big house tonight/who wouldn't have run to pull you through."

Those are my two favorites from this hard edged folk singer. There are plenty more to enjoy on "Hard Times In Babylon." For me, they are "Engineer Bill" with its snaky lead guitar, and gospel inflected "Sanctuary," which ends the album on a hopeful note. If you enjoy Casey Chambers, Nanci Griffiths, Patty Griffin of even the Dixie Chicks, you'll probably enjoy Eliza Gilkyson.

I was buying gas during a long road trip through Wyoming. Song number five was playing on my truck stereo while I was pumping gas and a beautiful woman in a nearby gas bay started staring at me. Hark, a clue, I thought... I must not be the only one who likes that song a lot. It's a great song.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite of Eliza.......2004-12-11

Have had the privilege of hearing Eliza in very intimate local venues and she's got the most outstanding honey-and-whiskey voice. That voice always takes center stage with simple arrangements backing. This is an amazing album, covering everything from sinning to salvation. "Hard Times in Babylon" according to Eliza is autobiographical of the worst times in her career. "Sanctuary" is a beautiful hymn no matter what spiritual affiliation you have. While Eliza's newest "Land of Milk and Honey" has been nominated for a Grammy in the Folk Category this year, I think "Hard Times" is a very good place to start listening to Eliza's music.

5 out of 5 stars Hard Core Emotions.......2004-06-15

To me, this album was a breakthrough for Eliza Gilkyson. I can see by some people's reviews that they miss the more folksy side of Eliza. But if I could only keep one Eliza Gilkyson album ... I personally would choose this.

These songs are daring! Not just lyrically with such great lines as "I've got a foolish heart, but I'm not an idiot." and "Be still, my beating heart" in reference to not quite wanting to go on today. But it's also musically extraordinary. The opening song is catchy as anything. And then, she moves to ballads, hard rock-n-roll beats, sultry numbers, experimental formats. What remains consistent throughout the album is the hard core emotional honesty.

Lyrics always take center stage on this album -- she annunciates clearly, and no matter what's going on musically, you can always hear the words plainly. I like that.

And these are some serious words! Backed by husky expressiveness.

This is an album that challenges you to explore the emotional realms -- and not just the cheery ones.

I loved her previous albums. But to me -- this one is art.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and Soulful.......2002-10-24

Who said good songs can't be intelligent and thoughtful, and still tug at your heart and fill your soul? Eliza has a one of a kind voice, is a lyrical, poetic songwriter, and bares her soul in her songs. Sometimes things get a bit cryptic, but in this CD the heart is on the sleeve. I wouldn't say it is an uplifting CD, it has its dark side, but I wouldn't call it depressing either. The darkness just gives the music an edge that feels good. Every song has been played over & over on the repeat feature of my CD player. I immediately went searching for more. Her latest, "Lost & Found" lives up to the promise of this stellar CD.

In their inimitable 1958 Wayne touring bus, stuffed with flea-market couches and a propane stove, Fred Eaglesmith and the Flying Squirrels have spent the last decade descending from Canada to play any venue that will have them. These two discs generously capture the fury and fun of their live gigs, despite the track fade-outs and the absence of Eaglesmith's hilarious between-song storytelling. The set includes the previously unrecorded (for good reason) novelty tunes "White Trash," "Big Hair," and "How's Ernie?" yet another car song "Benchseat Baby," but also "John Deere" and "Carmelita," rare gems that stand with the best of Eaglesmith's working-class portraits. He growls and snarls through every line, while his cohorts--including human salvage yard Washboard Hank, distortion-pedal-loving mandolinist Willie P. Bennett, and harmony vocalist and bassist Ralph Schipper (whose last show the set documents)--rock like punks on a mission. --Roy Kasten

4 out of 5 stars a good'un.......2002-05-21

Just what you probably think you don't need--yet another two-disc thematic song suite on an indie label. "Ralph's Last Show" (named for the bandmate whose green card has since expired) sounds like the worst sort of treacle in theory--songs about trains, old cars, old loves, even, so help me, one about an old dog. In reality these are beautifully observed, sometimes sweet, often hilarious songs written by a journeyman Canadian folkie whose voice has just the right amount of road- (if not world-)weariness in it. All that and an Appalachian murder ballad that sounds more authentic than anything Gillian Welch has come up with. Docked a notch only for spreading two 40 min. sets across two cds when both would've easily fit on one.

5 out of 5 stars Torn between 4 and 5 stars........2001-09-09

FOUR car songs, three train songs, a tractor song, and a bunch of awesome non-machinery songs too... I'd label it country/folk with an edge, with tons of fiddling in the background. Unless you hate that kind of music, what's not to like?

Well, it comes in a cardboard sleeve with no lyric sheets, and parts of it wouldn't play in my finicky old CD player, probably because the CDs got a little warped in transit because of the cheesy packaging. (The lyrics are pretty clear in the songs, so not having a lyric sheet isn't a crisis. The songs I could play on the old player were good enough to justify purchasing a new CD/DVD player the day after I got the CD, which plays both disks just fine.) "Flowers in the Dell" is a little creepy. And after a while the album's overall vocal and musical roughness got on my nerves, so I had to play something else for a bit.

Still, it's an amazing album, too good to knock down a whole star. But if 4.5 was an option, it'd be that.

5 out of 5 stars He's a pretty good guy.. with a great cd.......2001-08-30

I've seen quite a few live Fred shows, and this cd captures the band at its musical peak. Included are some very new songs, some standards, and some revived classics. The best news is that you can really hear Washboard Hank, who's been a major force in the live shows but sadly missing from the recordings. Pay close attention to Hank's excellent dobro work!
On the down side, the cd doesn't include the between-songs stories, quips, and banter that make a Fred Eaglesmith show a truly a wonderful experience.

5 out of 5 stars TOP TEN FOR YEAR 2001.......2001-06-19

This is cd is more acoustic than his last cd's, you'll have to go back to "Paradise Motel" for the same feeling. The cd is full of raw energy, and Eaglesmith as always is amazing. It's his best cd (from the ones I've heard) and one of the best cd's this year.

Amazing!

Just one problem, at close to 82 minutes it's too short for 2 cd's, it could have fit into one (- some applause and maybe one track less). It's yr money so you better know it before you order.

5 out of 5 stars STEPHEN FOSTER'S AMERICA.......2006-12-06

I am so happy that I discovered this CD! These interpretations take me back to another place and time when parlor music dominated America's musical culture. In the 19th century, trained singers sang beautiful ballads by the family piano. Douglas Jimerson presents a time capsule with carefully crafted interpretations. By the way, the sound samples on amazon appear to be from an earlier release of the album, and the new recordings are more lovely than I expected.

2 out of 5 stars Keep shopping for Stephen Foster!.......2002-06-05

If I may be blunt, I can't stand this album! Mr. Jimerson's voice is excellent. However, his operatic leanings undermine the spirit of Stephen Foster's music.

As for the arrangments, if Mr. Jimerson is going to keep the words "dere" (for "there") and "dat" (for "that") in the songs, then why exclude the word "darkies" in favor of "mama" and the like? My guess is that fans of Stephen Foster (who, when compared to other minstrel songwriters of his day, imbided the subjects of his songs with a great deal of dignity) are more interested in maintaining the purity of the songs than they are in achieving political correctness via 19th Century songs!

For my money, the Robert Shaw Chorale C.D. of Stephen Foster songs is much more enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Jimerson Not Half Bad.......2002-02-08

These are earnest and heartfelt renditions of Stephen Foster songs that really deliver a period flavor, and nail Foster's emotions on the head. I can't believe that anyone could object to Mr. Jimerson's elision of currently offensive racial terms. There's a difference between "Massa's in de Cold, Cold Ground," which establishes a dramatic situation, take it or leave it, and race-specific epithets that might hurt somebody's feelings in the here and now. My only problem with Mr. Jimerson is that he tends throw these bizarre songs into the mix that have nothing to do with the themes of his albums -- like "He's Got the Whole World." Still, we should be grateful that this sensitive singer (and his fine, period-conscious musicians) are recording great 19th Century sentimental songs. I'd like to see him go even deeper into the literature of the time.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless and Beautiful.......2001-08-01

Faithful renditons of great songs. Every American should know the words to at least half a dozen of these gems. I do not agree with reviewers who believe he should have included the original slurs....these "reviewers" should imagine themselves in Mr. Jimmerson's place, who was singing for a diverse crowd in our nation's capitol in 1990's America. Accuracy ("authenticity"?)is of course crucial, but it is absurd to demand that the performer sing these uncomfortable lines in this setting.

2 out of 5 stars Politally Correct or Stupid?.......2001-02-28

The major thing wrong with this recording is the editing out of the word "darkies" which is like eliminating "cowboy" from western songs. If this guy is so sensitive, why include "Massa" which is a tribute to a slave master. Also, He's Got The Whole World In His Hand is generally attributed to the modern age.

If you want to hear a much better rendition of Foster, and other music of the period, try and find Thomas Hampson, "American Dreamer" and "An Old Song Re-Sung".

If you like music with 19th century flavor, get this CD! I enjoyed every cut and I can't say that about very many CDs of period music. Speaking as a guitar player, the slide work on "Trudging up the South Fork" was superb! As manager of the gift store at Sutter's Fort State Historic Park in Sacramento I immediately made this CD a part of my inventory. Give it a listen. You'll be glad you did.

      Album Description

Cuttin Grass in a Contemporary Bluegrass band based in Maryland, this CD represents 10 original songs and tunes composed by the band members. It reflects on our youth, love, life and heartbreak, and all things bluegrass. We wanted something fresh and we used bands like the Seldom Scene and The Country Gentlemen and hard core picking and singing like the IIIrd Tyme Out as models. Our goals was a bluegrass album that would appeal to everyone. It has surpassed our wildest expectations.
