Cowboy Nation

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Formerly by turn, the Dils, Rank & File, and Blackbyrd, Chip, and Tony Kinman have couched their country heart in prevailing musical styles. As Rank & File, they recorded one of the great cow-punk albums in Sundown. But beneath the veneer of each incarnation lay the soul of Roy Rogers, and that consciousness surfaces here. There's a pure understated, old-time country charm to "Cowboy Way" and "Rifle, Pony & Me." Meanwhile, tracks such as "Remember the Alamo," "The Blizzard," and the final lament "The Clock" reflect the darker sensibilities of Nick Cave as much as the pathos of Marty Robbins. The danger is that Cowboy Nation will drift into obscurity like much of the Kinman catalogue. That would be an unfortunate fate for this quiet, unobtrusive, and delightful watercolor of Western Americana. --John Sutton-Smith

5 out of 5 stars Enthralling.......2007-03-09

I've had this CD since it came out and I never get tired of it. It's atmospheric and rhythmic with moving lyrics. The singer's voice is so deep and emotional that it gives me chills. The drums and guitar roll along rhythmically with the stories that outwardly are about cowboy life, but seem to me to be metaphors for universal human situations.

5 out of 5 stars Superfan could only give it a 5!.......2002-03-03

What can be said about this wonderful set, pleasing relatively young'uns like me as well as my Texan Dad & Uncle...being the "former head of the Blackbird fan club" and all, sure I'm biased....but the ever-talented Kinmans are truly at their best when they show their country roots, here as well as in their former incarnation Rank and File (Rhino not releasing "Sundown" and "Long Gone Dead" on CD is a CRIME, hear that!!). Tony's melancholy, expressive voice, Chip's guitar virtuosity....the tunes done with taste and reverence for the genre, but also with a refreshing hint of the punk spunk that recalls their Dils days...
Some favorite songs in particular are: Two Miles to Town, Way to Go, Cowboy's Vision, Shenandoah, Leaving this Town, Cut Above. I know, might as well list the whole album! Absolutely awesome, a lullaby.

4 out of 5 stars Yee-haw........2002-12-19

Alt.country-ish slowcore from some longtime SoCal musical bad boys The actual "cowboyness" of this latest offering by Tony & Chip Kinman (formerly of Dils/Rank&File/Blackbird punk/indie infamy...) is fairly obscure. Twang-tinged, droning, drifting tunes in which their vocals sound remarkably like Hoyt Axton. A few songs are too repetitive, though on the whole this has a lulling, narcotic feel.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Spinechill quotient high!.......2002-11-12

You know it's a great album when just thinkin' about the songs gives you chills. Top form, baby. Awesome guitar textures abound, lyrics hit home as usual, vocals and harmonies wonderful.....solid album.....can't believe how good. Some favorites are: Rebel (rockin', another great Kinman train song, like R'n'F's "Conductor", Blackbird/CN's "Big Train" ), All I Had to Offer (poignant lyrics), Girl Why Don't You (slow and easy mood causer), Full Fathom 5 (giving us their great Lonesome West sound yet again), Paniolo (so brilliant and sweet, sigh).....
A "new high water mark", or something like that! Gush, gush!

5 out of 5 stars Kinman Brothers Strike Again!.......2002-11-09

This may be the Kinman Brothers' finest album to date. No small statement that, considering that three of their previous releases (Rank and File's "Sundown," Blackbird's searing self titled Scotti Brother's release, and Cowboy Nation's brilliant "We Do As We Please") are in constant rotation on my system.
Cowgirl a-go-go, the LA based brothers' 3rd release in this incarnation of Kinmania, is a soaring achievement.
I don't think I've ever heard these guys sing better together. That's also no small statement, as their harmonies inspired the Everly Brothers to take a stab at "Amanda Ruth," which was the lead off song on Rank and File's debut album "Sundown," a record that nearly singlehandedly launched the cowpunk/alt. country movement.
I've listened to this CD about 5 times since I bought it, a mere 2 days ago. It's in my car waiting for me now. I have no doubt that I'll be listening to it quite a bit in the months and years to follow. Why these guys are not HUGE is God's own private mystery. Buy this album IMMEDIATELY, and join the quest. The Quest for the West. Forget the rest, the West is the best, and Cowgirl a-go-go is the best in the West. In a genre of music usually inhabitted by nancy-men, pretty boys, and poseurs, it's great to hear some tough, spirited, sure-footed songs about the greatest American myth of them all. The God-blessed cowboy.

5 out of 5 stars ... cryin' to a hillbilly song..........2002-10-18

Yes that's me driving along with glazed eyes, CD player going, off in a CN-induced dream state....'course them Kinmans always place me directly in heaven, as they themselves know (snort). No but really, this album was not as immediately accessible as "A Journey Out of Time", but upon repeated listenings, the wonderful details come forth and stick in your mind, like the final note of "Cowboy Nation" (and the whole song rules!), the gentle pulsating guitar rhythm of "The Blizzard", and the swoonworthy, heartbreaking romanticism of "Way Out West" (this one'll put you in ecstasy or tears, or both at once!)...."Tender Foot" is such an awesome instrumental (a short blip, but what a blip!), and their version of "Remember the Alamo" is truly fine. Like "Journey", it's anuthah lullaby!

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2002-07-06

I had heard of this band and have been trying to focus more on the "Western" as opposed to the "Country." With voices deeper than Johnny Cash and an understanding of a genre almost lost, Cowboy Nation really does it well. I've been listening to the CD over and over since I bought it.

        Album Description

Tales of the Wild West set to pop music, with a few unexpected (and creepy) surprises. The term Wells himself uses to describe this album is "gothic-neo-spaghetti-western-mood-o-billy."

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Wonderful.......2004-10-08

This is amazing stuff. The whole CD is terrific, start to finish.

By the way, the review by "a music lover" seems to be about a totally different album. Bar fights? Pickup trucks? The majority of this album is a dark pastiche of the old west. Tragedy, revenge and murder feature strongly in these songs.

But the whole experience isn't dark and depressing. There are a few amusing exceptions, like the sly, almost-parody "Motherlode," and the delightful, morbidly bouncy pop tune "Downstairs at the Funeral Home," which could be an unoffical theme song for HBO's "Six Feet Under."

Interesting subject matter aside, this is just excellent music. Is it traditional country? Nope. It's outside ordinary pigeonholed musical categories (which is probably what befuddled the so-called Music Lover's poor little teeny brain). Is it country-rock? Alt-country? Gothabilly? Who knows? Who cares? It's great stuff. Buy it. Support excellent independent music. (Not you, Music Lover. You can go back to your Billy Ray Cyrus, and leave the good stuff for the rest of us.)

4 out of 5 stars Old scenes viewed through a new lens.......2004-02-14

E.J. Wells's debut CD, "Rhyolite", is a marvelous set of highly atmospheric, original material with a strongly "Western" theme. During the "Western" boom of the '50s and early '60s, that genre was well-represented on TV, in the movies, and in song. But you won't find any reassuring traces of Roy and Gene and their pals here ; E.J. Wells has fashioned a very moody, "edgy" piece of work that likely is a lot closer to the truth than the celluloid version. There's nary a weak moment on this disc, as Wells reveals himself to be both a fine songwriter and a crack musician. Wells's sparkling originals are complemented by a rockin' take on the Del Shannon classic "Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow the Sun)". An impressive debut !

        1 out of 5 stars wannabe country.......2003-01-31

One star is for the fact that it has a case that I can use for other CDs... I ordered this based on the other review and am sorely disapointed... this is just more singersongwriter yuck about barfights and lost loves and pickups that has been done 50000 times by others and almost all of it was better.

Unless you need to listen to someone imatating a bad genre and purging themselves of all the crap that anyone with a car and a roadmap of the southwest could experience for themselves, go out and buy something that actually contains music and art that come from the soul, not from someone trying to imitate a sound they dig.

4 out of 5 stars Chip Kinman's Review of Rhyolite.......2002-12-01

Western music is strange. It had it's heyday in the 30's, and has not been commercially viable since the late 50's (e.g. "El Paso" by Marty Robbins.) It is now a genre populated by failed country singers, folkies, and hobbyists.
E.J. Wells has done something remarkable. He has released a new album that is at once modern, AND evokes the old west...no small trick. Western music has always been a blend of sounds and traditions, and "Rhyolite" carries this blend to new and thrilling heights- with an ingenious mix of folk, glitter rock, Mersey beat, spaghetti, surf and...Pink Floyd-esqe atmospherics!!!???!!! I love this record. It works best as a set piece...listen to it all the way through. And I mean LISTEN to it. It will take you somewhere dry, dusty, and dangerous. The songs also work individually...RHYOLITE, BLOOD ON THE MOON, CEMETERY MAN, RISING SUN, UNDERTAKER'S LAMENT...WOW!!!!! An essential record by one of the best. Buy it....nuff said?
