A bluesy classic from 1979.......2004-02-18

Hank's music has three main roots - country, blues and rock'n'roll. The blues influence is less evident than the other two on some of his other albums but it is strong on this one. The majority of the album (the first four and the last three tracks) is quite mellow, though three consecutive tracks in the middle (I fought the law, Family tradition, Only Daddy that'll walk the line) pick up the tempo.

Family tradition is one of several great songs that Hank has written about himself and his father. I guess it was written in response to people who said that he wasn't like his father, especially his musical style. In the song, Hank lists all the ways in which he is like his father - drinking, smoking, singing and living out his songs.

Old flame new fire, Always loving you, We can work it all out, I've got rights and I just ain't been able are all great original songs. Paying on time sounds like an old Crystal Gayle song (Dreaming my dreams with you) with new lyrics. There are several excellent covers including To love somebody (Bee Gees), I fought the law (an American hit for Bobby Fuller but revived in the late seventies by British punk rockers The Clash) and Only Daddy that'll walk the line (Waylon Jennings).

This is not the most instantly appealing of Hank's albums but there is a lot of great music here, which grows on you with repeat plays. If you like your country music served with a strong blues flavor, this is for you.

I have listened to this CD over and over and every time I hear it again it keeps getting better! All of Hank Jr's records are like this.

Wow!!!! Who is this guy?.......2003-12-27

I heard about this CD from a friend and took a chance and purchased it. I'm normally into Rock music but I am very pleasantly surprised. Like the other reviewer, I find this above the standard Country/Western fare. Without a doubt, the song "Email Female" is my favorite though every song on this CD is a winner. Garret Swayne definitely deserves more attention with this fantastic CD.

First Glance is a hell of a first album........2003-01-25

This is my second copy of "First Glance", which should tell you a lot about how I feel about this guy's work. (My first copy was taken by my wife who now keeps it in her car.) A friend put me onto "Email Female", which captured the whole cyber-dating thing so perfectly (and I hear there's now a very funny Flash animation circulating the Internet). I pretty much took a chance on the CD which is often a risky proposition. To my welcome surprise this was an excellent album. I'm not usually that much into the country/western thing, but this is more than a cut above than your typical Nashville fare. Clever songs with a lot of heart, and solid production. I definitely thought it was worth the investment and more.

Phil Christie is the tops in his group. His writing is close to his heart and his voice is a mixture of Neil Diamond, and sounds like John Denver on the country songs. How nice to hear someone with a "true" voice and not a machine. Great CD.
